  Ghana is indeed a lawless country.Just look at how hawkers at the makola market are defying the decongestion exercise by the Accra Municipal Authority.The army should be drafted in to help with the decongestion exercise.There should be no room for compromise with these hawkers who are hell bent on defying the law.THE LAW MUST WORK!!!!!

  I am confused about the reporter's use of the terms "pavement" and "street", and without his/her use of the term, "sidewalk". Things may be different in Ghana, or Britain where Ghana gets most of its ideas from.

  I am confused about the reporter's use of the terms "pavement" and "street", and without his/her use of the term, "sidewalk". Things may be different in Ghana, or Britain where Ghana gets most of its ideas from.
  
  1. A "pavement" in Canada (and the US) is the top covering of a street, avenue or any other type of roadway. This top covering is usually made of black tar. A street or roadway pavement is the surface on which vehicles travel.
  
  2. A "sidewalk" (also technically a pavement), is usually made of cement concrete. A sidewalk lines either side of a street or roadway. A sidewalk is the surface on which pedestrians walk.
  
  3. A black roadway pavement is for vehicles; and a concrete sidewalk is for pedestrians. The reason for this type of layout is obvious: to prevent vehicle-pedestrian collisions.
  
  4. If the above-noted system prevails in Ghana, and in my own experience, it is the "sidewalks" that have been overtaken my hawkers. Losing their space to hawkers, pedestrians can only walk on the street pavements, hence the congestion and confusion on Ghana's city streets.
  
  5. If the hawkers, after having taken over the sidewalks, have spilled over onto the roadway pavements, as the article seems to suggest, is there any room left for vehicles at all? But if the double takeover is the reality, then drivers and the AMC have a serious problem.
