  If there is a forum on the web to discuss very important issues like the one on the table, let us hold the bull by the horn and stop deviating from the point under discussion.My quesions are two in this context.What can we down grade our University Education as useless.What is Dr Nkrumah,s name mentioned here\.I should think,It is time we hold the bull by the horn and stop the blame game.I raed this article and found myself completely humiliated, and quickly pushed it to the backyard of succeeding and present Govenment failing to initiate policies over the years to encourage farmers who are in these sectors of the economy and the result is what we are witnessing now.It is indeed a scandal

  Most of our forum attendees expend more time and attention on partisan pettiness than reading and thinking about how issues like this are fast changing our lives for worse.
  
  Not long ago, there appeared a report on the status of our Forests which indicated our Deputy Minister of Lands and Mineral Resources was alerting us to an imminent need for us to import Lumber from Gabon and Cameroons among other Countries.
  
  The news was very alarming and exposed how we have been wantonly squandering our Wood sources, and our leaders had let us down by failing to curb illegal chainsaw lumber processing in our Forests, for example.
  
  Shortly later, we were informed of how the head of the Timber Exporters Asociation was fiercely resisting the unilateral EU ban on Timber Exports from our part of the World, trying to save us from ourselves, where our own Agencies, even the whole Gov'ts have failed us.
  
  Then followed, in a few weeks, the news on how as many as 65 Forestry personnel have been murdered in our Forests by illegal operators within the last 2 years alone.
  
  In all these reports, the public response was very minimal, showing how inattentive we are to matters regarding our loss of such Natural Assets.
  
  People would only be shockingly awoken by a sudden spike in the price of the commodities derived from these sources . The realities include total absence of these items from the Markets when we would not have enough Foreign exchange to back importation of these items.
  
  In fact, the Deputy Minister referred to earlier on did hint that tour Class one Species for best quality Timber were almost extinct. Something unimaginable some twenty years ago. But our folks seem to think more about who said what against their Political Parties than where they are going to get wood to roof their houses, chew-sticks to clean their teeth or lumber for their furniture.
  
  That is just very sad, indeed!

  I suppose you don't know that other Governments, especially Western ones, subsidize their national agricultural manufacturing, pharmaceutical, and research industries. With initial government support, these industries survive ...

  I suppose you don't know that other Governments, especially Western ones, subsidize their national agricultural manufacturing, pharmaceutical, and research industries. With initial government support, these industries survive, employ nationals, improve and withstand international competition for both local and export markets.
  
  In our case, our govt. officials STILL dole out subsidies, NOT to industries where returns may be a few years away, but to IMPORTERS SO THAT THEY CAN GET THEIR IMMEDIATE CUT. Even BANKERS will rather loan to IMPORTERS at exorbitant interest rates, after collecting upfront bribes, rather than to loan to industry entrepreneurs. THE KICKBACK SYNDROME IS DROWNING OUR AGRICULTURAL AND MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES.

Our economy is in a bad situation yet our leaders don't see the importacne of banning some foreign commodities which we produe locally. Why should Ghana import wood,orange, banana, etc., whereas it is in aboundance here. The government must take steps to ban importation of those items and encourage local production and local consumtion to save the economy

  We are trying to be a service economy whilst neglecting the basucs of any economy. Agriculture,manufacturing, good infrastructure, utilities etc and the move on to the next stage of development. An example is lack of good road and railway network but concentrating on aviation, how many Ghanaians can afford to fly although necessary.
