Prince Kofi Amoabeng, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of UT Bank, says Ghana has failed in spite of the recognition of the country as an emerging economy.

He said “truly from what I have seen in the last 50 years I can truly say that Ghana is a failing state. Businesses are not being helped to flourish because of the lack of structure and infrastructural developments.”

He explained that Ghana’s economy has not been in the best shape in the past 50 years and businesses, which are the backbone of any successful economy, continue to be killed by those who have been at the helm over the years.

Mr. Amoabeng disclosed this while speaking on the topic “challenges facing private sector businesses in Ghana” at a forum held to celebrate the 1st anniversary of The Finder, a private newspaper set up by the former Managing Director of Graphic Communication Limited.

He noted that Ghana has not been able to realize its development potential because there is too much corruption and indiscipline in every sector, particularly the public service.

“Because of the structural breakdown, Ghanaians do not feel accountable to anyone and corruption has taken over every aspect of our economy,” he reiterated.

He said in spite of Ghana’s touted democratic credentials, the type of structures and systems that would make Ghana an economic success had not been delivered.

The UT Bank boss called for practical steps to be taken in order to create the enabling environment for businesses to thrive.

Mohammed Awal, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Marble Communications Group, publishes of The Finder, The Weekend Finder and Finder Sports, said the anniversary topic: “Strengthening State Institutions for Private Sector Development” was chosen to highlight the need for the state to play an active role in developing the private sector.

“The state must collaborate with the private sector to encourage development, he said, adding that The Finder was developed to complement journalism in national development and they were committed to producing credible, balance and development-oriented stories.

He announced that the company will next year come out with its business paper and an electronic media house.

Peter Jones, the British High Commissioner to Ghana, said Africa’s private sector had generated an estimated 70 percent of the continent’s output, approximately two-thirds of its investment and 90 percent of employment on the continent.

He added that based on these statistics offered by the African Union (AU), the creation and development of private sector job, is seen as one of the most effective and sustainable strategies for alleviating poverty in Africa.

He said Africa could reduce dependence on foreign aid if the private sector becomes dynamic.

Mr. Jones noted that challenges facing Ghana’s private sector such as high cost of utility, lack of access to information on external markets and inadequate physical infrastructure could be tackled if the sector is given the needed attention.

For, how does one explain this reaction to a genuine legal issue of reptriating Chinese doing illegal business in Ghana. Does China allow foreigners to do what they like in China? On the contrary, what does China say about the numerous law abiding Chinese citizens in Ghana who are going about their normal bussinesses with the support of Ghana government and beign given the traditionally warm hospitality of ordinary Ghanaian citizens?

If this is China's version of frienship, then I'm afraid Ghana and AFrica don't need them.

Now life expectancy in these area has been shortened by 5.5 years. They walk,ride and drive around in these cities with their noses covered. Tightening their visa requirements to Ghanaian visitors will hurt both ways. They need us to buy and consume their manufactured goods. Making it difficult for us to enter, means we will take our dollars to other countries such as Brazil, India or Taiwan.

Here in the US you don't find any other nationals working in their businesses - even not as messengers. If our leaders will have forsight and open up and train our people we would soon find other nationals depending ou us. Most of the shoddy goods that China produces coud be made in Ghana. We have the labor force. They have come to destroy our textile industry. They steal our designs, go and produce inferior quality, bring them back to sell to Ghanaians at cheaper prices. Any cloth made in China just wash it once and that's the end of it. Talking of roads and buildings. The fact is they work faster but low quality results. I bet you most of the roads in the country that they have constructed will not last more than five years and will all be destroyed. Those who have allowed them to put up buildings for them should be ware because collapse is imminent.

Our leaders and those in authority must wise up. They must stop offering contracts to these Chinese once and for all.

I congratulate the President for taking a bold and decisive step to deal partly with the menace the Chinese are causing in Ghana.

To me, this is nonsense. Is the Chinese Government saying Ghana Government should have looked on unconcerned while the chinese illegal miners destroyed our environment, water-bodies and livelihood? I also think that, the Ghana government is to blame for security lapses in our security sector in Ghana which had brought about all these mess between Ghana and China; because the influx into the country and illegal activities of these Chinese should have been prevented from the onset by Ghanaian authorities. Despite the fact that, the illegal miners had been deported back to China, some heads in the immigration service, the Police, the District Assemblies and tradional settings should be made to face the full weight of the law bacause they are to blame for security lapses and conniving with these chinese. Ghana should adopt sustainable ways of generating money internally and stop over relying on foriegn assistance. The Government should not travel and sell Ghana out there looking for foreign investment and when the so called investors or visitors come in sheep's clothing, the government does very little to monitor their activities or operations; hence, these mess betwwen Ghana and China. However, China's stance on new visa regulation on Ghanaians should tell us that, the Chinese do not wish us well as Ghanaians. It's good we are seeing the true colours of the Chinese. Let us think twice when dealing with them. They are all cheats. They were prepared to do anything to get our minerals if we drink "galamsey" water instead of spring water. Let's watch them. Simple.

The Chinese government will be more than unwise to take any retaliatory measures even though people from Ghana need not worry about their visas. Chinese goods are really inferior hence business people have resort to other competitive options. In all, you will only sacrifice your freedom in Ghana for harsh, punitive and backward life in China. Those Chinese who place value on freedom are also well meaning ones because they do not just value Ghana for its gold, but also put real premium on the golden opportunities accorded to them. I will want to think twice, if not deeply before taking a resident visa to China.

the chinese are hypocrites are they not the ones who claim to be helping Ghanaians to develop,are they saying we should allow them to destroy our water bodies and environment so that we die out of their neglegience is that what they want to tell us shame unto them we are not fools, they should take a mental note of that,Ghanaians are wide awake to their responsibilities and their welfare.the irresponsible ones should all be KICKED OUT OF GHANA PERIOD!!!!!
