Ghanaians must device means to avoid taxes. This is the surest way of saving money. Why drink minerals if you can afford oranges at a fifth of the price. Why eat imported rice if you can afford local rice at half the price. We must resort more to our local products to teach the Vagabonds in Power(VIPs) a bitter lesson for not being innovative. They are a fond of taking cheap money from the port and so they can't think. Fellow Ghanaians let us device means to punish these useless university graduates in authority.

If this increased taxes were invested in supporting the improvements in these areas of agriculture you mentioned, you would not have to worry much about imports...
But I get it, "imports bad, local production good", but what happens if the local goods just do not meet the standards our people want?
The essence of a market is based on meeting the needs of the customer, and the customer makes their assessment based on how they spend.
Additionally would it not make sense for the government to help these local producers of rice (using your example) sell their rice to say smaller less competitive markets like South Sudan or even Sierra Leone? I think the government needs to be more creative when it comes to figuring out how to increase the tax base...

This NDC government is clueless of managing the economy. Taxes are going up every day while service delivery declines unabated. Where are we Ghanians heading to with these hellish situation, Te country is broke but the Minster of Finance maintains the economy is robust. God help us in Ghana with this lying and corrupt NDC government. Poor fiscal management and corruption are killing the Ghana nation. The NDC government is not interested to tackle this canker but always resorts to increasing taxes that hurt every one except themselves because they enjoy every thing free- free petrol, free housing, free electricity plus the usual kickbacks.

Regional competition has helped places like China (say what you say about them but they have moved millions of people out of poverty recently) tremendously.
