The best thing that has ever happened to Ghana was the overthrow of the first totalitarian regime in Africa. CPP was just like the NAZI party in Germany. Go to many African countries and you will see the bad examples od dictatorship which Nkrumah introduced into Africa

Indeed, Busia represents ethnocentric politics in Ghana, from his days as leader of the NLM, a fact many NPPians try to hide, to when he became Prime Minister. The 1969 campaign afforded him the opportunity to unleash his pent up ethnocentrism on Ewes, and gaining power the opportunity to turn on other Africans with his Aliens Compliance Order.

The Progress Party under Busia's leadership sowed the seed of ethnic chauvinism and divisionism in Ghana; a fact captured in Dennis Austin' book “Ghana Observed.” With what he knew already about Ghana, he still marvelled at the highly inflammatory anti-Ewe rhetoric of the PP's campaign - the origin of the Ewes-are-dominating-us-mantra we still hear today on Ghanaweb in particular and elsewhere. It started even before Rawlings joined the Airforce. So Austin observed in 1969:

“A surprising and disagreeable novelty of the election was the extraordinary anti-Ewe sentiment that was expressed in conversation with many of those who were against Gbedemah and his party. One can explain this strong animus not simply by a dislike of Gbedema’s reappearance in political life but in relations to events after the 1966 coup. Suddenly there were the soldiers and the police, and everyone burst out singing, but when the music died down away it was noticed that the NLC (it seemed) was commanded by minorities: Ewe and Ga. When Ankrah (a Ga), was moved out, and charges were brought over-hastily by Harlley against the Chief of Defence Staff, Michael Otu, the evidence to many was overwhelming. It was all an Ewe plot. Soon Ghana would be run for the benefit of an energetic minority, operating first within the armed forces, and now behind Gbedemah. ‘Appoint an Ewe to a public corporation or to a government department and within a year the entire hierarchy down to the messenger will be an Ewe.’ So the argument ran. And there was always some evidence for it, since the Ewe, deprived of any natural wealth in their own barren region, have been energetic in seizing the opportunities of public employment, including positions in the army and the police, which wealthier communities (like the Akan) did not wish to occupy. In practice, looking through the list of senior officers in government departments and the public corporations, the evidence is certainly not clear of any Ewe domination: it could hardly be in view of their number. But a belief does not, of course, have to be true before people hold it fervently.
Now there is an Akan-dominated government of an Akan dominated society. Were I to become, by some improbable chance of fate, leader of the governing party I would be much less apprehensive of my Ewe opponents in front than of the large and expectant following behind. I would be fearful too of the ambitions of those now excluded from power, remembering the Songs of Innocence that:
The strongest poison ever known
Came from Caeser’s laurel crown” (D. Austin 1976:125)

Austin was writing with hindsight about what befell Busia’s regime, overthrown in a coup led by an Asante.

Of course, this apprehension of Ewe dominance, induced by already held pre-colonial and colonial prejudices against them, led to the sacking of mostly Ewes in the infamous Apollo 585 and the celebrated Sallah case which exposed Busia as not a true believer in the rule of law principles with his infamous shouts of “No court! No court!….”

Of course, he was just another African autocrat in the mold of the right-wing leaders of Africa such as Kenyattah and Houphouet Boigny and would have entrenched himself in power too had he led Ghana to independence and imprisoned the opposition. So after all their noises about democracy and multiparty system, they banned the CPP and took every step to ban any party, e.g., the PPP, with a likely chance of beating them at the 1969 elections!

His right-wing economic views would have left the mass of people illiterate and in a feudal, primitive state as one finds in the Horn of Africa, rural Ivory Coast and Kenya. He oversaw the disbandment of the free and universal education policy of the CPP which has led to the general illiteracy in Ghana today, with the Congo under Mobutu even surpassing Ghana in literacy rate!

Industrialisation??? Nope! It wasn't in his books, not to mention vision!

Modern agricultural devt? In his books, that's an attack on the freedom and rights of the peasantry whose children should not go to school cos educating them made them refuse to work on the land.

Wile those calling themselves radicals were promoting the idea of a military solution,Africans taking on the might of the apartheid South African regime in a war, Dr Busia was a lone voice advocating the use of dialogue to resolve the issue. Dr Busia never supported apartheid. His argument was that it was better to jaw-jaw than war-war.
There was a time in our history when most criminals caught and imprisoned in Ghana, were from neighbouring African countries. Dr Busia introduced The Aliens Compliance Order which required all non-Ghanaians to comply with a registration exercise to show that they were gainfully employed. If they could not do that they had to leave Ghana by a certain date. The motives were good, but I must admit that the execution was very worrying. Ghanaians took advantage of the policy to drive out non-Ghanaians, especially Nigerians, who had established good businesses and were gainfully employed.
Unfortunately, we are Ghanaians and will forever decry our own people for political and tribal reasons. Dr Busia never supported apartheid. In fact, he was vindicated by posterity when apartheid was ended by dialogue, not a war.

Wrong! Nkrumah started working on the 7 Year Development Plan and had a lot of things going for Ghana and Africa in general before the coup d'etat instigated by the perpetrators of imperialism and colonialism championed by Kofi Abrefa Busia. During his term, Nkrumah had the Akosombo dam built which is still supplying electricity to our nation's grid and the Bui hydro Dam as a future add on, the Tema harbour and Motor way, GIHOC, large commercial farms to sustain our manufacturing/industries and food for local consumption. The Aboso Glass factory and the Tire plantation, Kade matches factory, Asutuari sugar plantation, the Tomatoes and corned beef factories in the North were few of the factories that Nkrumah established. The State Transport buses, Black Star Line, Ghana Airways and even our ground transportation systems were very efficient. One can always take the train from Accra to Kumasi in comfort. The State Housing Corporation were putting up affordable decent houses and well planned communities like the Tema communities. Young Doctors were offered scholarships and were graduating for posting to hospitals and other health centers all over Ghana. Schools were built and allowed anybody of school going age access free of charge. Nkrumah Started the Young Pioneer and infused nationalism in the youth. The Workers and Builders Brigade were engaged to be the driving force of the nation building which provided jobs for the youth. Apart from Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah was instrumental in the liberation of Africa. No doubt he was voted one of the few Africans who really championed the dreams of mankind in the past few hundred years. There is no one in Ghana now or during Osagyefo's tenure who can compare to the feat that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah achieved before he was overthrowned by some greedy bastards who only wanted his ouster for their personal gains. and mind you, Nkrumah never had anything built for himself or any bank account in his name anywhere in the world.

Why did I say Nkrumah childish dream of becoming president of United States of Africa? In his time, East Nzima and West Nzima were not at peace. Kwame Nkrumah did could not unite his own Nzima people. And this dreamless dictator was dreaming of becoming president of United States of Africa. The colonial government left a huge sum of money for Nkrumah government. If Kwame Nkrumah had proper vision, Ghana wouldn't have been in this mess. If your like minded Acheampong had allowed Dr. Busia to govern Ghana, we would have been ahead. When I read Dr. Busia's Rural Development Program, I cried, and I asked myself that what did Kutu Acheampong know that he overthrew a brilliant leader like Busia? Dr. Busia's Rural Development policies would have helped Ghana a lot. Look at how shanty Accra is, for everybody wants to live in Accra.

Despite occultist Kwame Nkrumah shortcomings, he was better than JJ Rawlings, Atta Mills and John Mahama. Nkrumah built secondary schools in Every district. His compulsory education gave opportunities to most rural folks.

Sekou, don't jump into the discussion by saying nasty things about Dr. Busia. If Busia had had eleven years of your father time in office, things would have been better in Ghnana. Your father, Kwame Nkrumah was a dictator, occultist, murderer.Your father, Kwame Nkrumah was real bad for our country.

Ghana's money Kwame Nkrumah gave to Guinea could have been used in our development project. Few roads in Ghana were tarred during your occultist father, Kwame Nkrumah reign. Ghana looked like a rural country during your father's time.

During the fifties and sixties, I was a proud Ghanaian. These days when I travel I feel humiliated. In the sixties I held my head high, not anymore. You young men and women might not understand what I am talking about, but it is true. We shall never have someone like Dr. Nkrumah anymore period.

Nkrumah had no vision or creativity.....'. To say that Nkrumah was visionless would have been laughed off and dismissed had such an assertion not bordered on unpardonable ignorance and intellectual criminality.

If you believed what you wrote, why didn't you tell us what Busia achieved in 3 years that Nkrumah didn't even contemplate in 5 years? On the economic front, how many dams or harbours or manufacturing plants did Busia's government build; and how many jobs did he create? Nkrumah and his government did them all.

Politically, you need be told a few home truths but I will give you just one. When, in 1948, Nkrumah and the CPP were demanding 'independence now' J. B. Danquah and his UGCC were advocating 'indepence in 50 years time'. Work out for yourself when Ghana would have been independent had the nation followed Danquah and Co.

In case anyone is wondering, I am not a CPP fanatic; I just want to educate Ghanaba (you are not number 1) and his ilk. The facts of Nkrumah's political and economic achievements are incontrovertible. That is not to say, though, that the man was a saint politically or economically speaking.

Some contributors on this forum are blinded by either party affiliation to spew lies, or plain ignorance to write nonsense. Ghanaba (you are not number 1), you need to learn more about your country's past in order to understand it present and make a meaningful contribution to its future.

In addition, he was a TRIBALIST who had all top EWE POLICE OFFICERS AND MILITARY OFFICERS DISMISSED FROM ACTIVE DUTY IN THE EARLY DAYS OF HIS ADMINISTRATION. Despite being academician and a "believer" in rule of law, he meddled in the affairs of the judiciary when he quipped "NO COURT" to the famous Sallah case.

The first ALL Ghanaian DISTRICT COMMISSIONER for Sekondi-Takoradi district, all he did during his tenure was to conduct a survey on PROSTITUTION in the district. He did not initiate any developmental projects in the area.

When Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and others gained independence for Ghana, he lead a delegation to London to protest it. What a shame! With his Interior Minister S.D. Dombo, they condoned and connived and crafted the infamous ALIENS COMPLIANCE ORDER that sent mostly West Afican Nationals living in Ghana packing to the last needle to their respective countries. What a shame!

Here is a guy whose only link to fame is his father. Priod. He Sekou as a person has NOT done anything for himself to merit the attention his infantile effusions get. Even the cheap Ph D he claims to have is from an obscure and unknown table-top institution located in a small provincial town in Romania.

This guy is actually a wreck. His arguments are so shallow and bereft of substace - an indication of the worthlessness of his cheap Ph D.

If Ghana had been led by Dr Busia immediately after independence we probably would have been closer to where Malaysia is today. If the gosple truth is to be told before God and man I, a septugenarian, can say without any fear of contradiction that the original source of all of Ghana's post-colonial problems is Sekou's father, Kwame Nkrumah. He was to Ghana what Mugabe is to Zimbabwe today. Because Nkrumah wanted a monopoly of power he foisted a pseudo-communist system on Ghana with his CPP as the sole legitimate political party in the country and he as president for life.

All the major infrastructural projects undertaken or initiated by Nkrumah could have been done by any leader, except an NDC one, considering the vast amount of money he inherited from the British. Busia would surely have done better (just as Houphuet Boigney did fr Cote d'Ivoireor Mahathia Mohammed for Malaysia or Lee Kwuan Yew for Singapore.).

That culture where people consider political office as a momey-making enterprise started with Nkrumah's CPP. The fact that ministers,DCEs and other appointees must all ride in V8 SUVs and live in state bungalows all started with Nkrumah. Corruption during Nkrumah's time could be at par with what we are witnessing under john mahama's NDC today. Krbo Edusei, a semi-literate minister bought himslf a gold-plaited bed from illicit money.

So the next time this empty-headed clown & political prostitute called Sekou wants to open his mouth he should revise his history.

Yes, it is certain that many short sighted people will find it difficult to agree with Dr Sekou Nkrumah on this very statement that Busia was not a visionary. Naturally, looking back at those times in the 40's,50's and 60's every person with great and good reasons for Ghana's good future would really described Busia, Danquah, Obetsebi Lamptey and others just to mention few of them as people of limited visions or people of hatred, who will prefer that nobody will do it if they could not do it.

With one's rational and open mindedness, it is obvious that the NPP is behaving the same way in many areas of their political actions and reactions if comparision is considered, looking back to the CPP and UP days. I see it logic that with our primitive political show, almost every NPP --UP fellow will like to praise every action of the UP guys as good even though they could be aware that it was bad--this is the primitive style, we always refuse to call a spade a spade. To be frank Akuffo Addo's description of Busia, Danquah as visionary is sad, because those people could not be called visionary. We can call them politicians, but not visionary.

These were people who worked against anything that they thought were good for Ghana, but simply because Nkrumah their enemy was the initiator, and therefore they had to use every possible means to bring him down, such people could not be described after many years as visionary. Akufo Addo should have said the UP politicians were politicians who did their best.

Kwame Nkrumah let Ghana down although he had seem to have started on a very good note. When he started putting innocent Ghanaians in detention without trial, the West from where he'd studied also cut him off.

The Akosombo dam was not Nkrumah's initiative. It was the British govt's plan. Soon after it became clear that Nkrumah has become a tyrant supressing Ghanaians, the British also declined to honour their plege to support Ghana build the dam, citing financial problems. Nkrumah was disappointed! He got another chance when the USA stepped in through Kaiser's Alluminum project.

Nkrumah squandered all the money the British left in our coffers. Soon Ghana had started off as a capitalist country would become a tight ally of Russia. Influence greatly by his close pal, W.E.B. Du Bois, Nkrumah had shun capitalism in favour of Communism/Socialism. That is why to this day, the "Donated by Govt" mentality still lives with some Ghanaians, esp. the CPP and the NDC.

That kind of mentality breeds laziness which retards a nation's progress. People who think by building Nsawam Cannery, Aboso Glass Factory, Bonsah Tires, Meat Factory, GNTC and GIHOC among others was great developement for Ghana, should think again.

Ghana was asked or force to sell all those State-owned companies, which were no-productive. People should just check on Cuba. They're still struggling to make live better. They still use old out-of-date equipment, although they seem to have managed to build good infrustructure, which could boost their nations march forward, should they allow free enterprise way of business.

Nkrumah let Ghana down big time! Unlike him, ex-Prez. Kuffour increased Ghana's economy five fold, when there was virtually nothing in the coffers when he took over, from the NDC which had been in govt for decades.

Sekou should chill and stop making funny comments about Dr. K. A. Busia, who had great vision but wasn't allowed to rule by a senseless military regime, headed by Kutu Acheampong.

If he(Dr.Nkrumah)knew of the cost of new Ghana's seven yr. development plan, he should have been able to manage the scanty resources to achieve better results like he declared "after all the black man is capable of managing his own affairs" indeed it was a jargon statement. This small analog testify the fact that Dr. Nkrumah had a misplaced priorities which concludes the fact that he had no vision for our dear country. He could have done better if he really had a vision. Finally the seven yr. development plan was based on our natural resources and what will be obtained from our balance of trade. There were people living in Ghana (Gold Coast) and there was export and import that means we had an harbour, many did travel by air to other parts of the world so there was an airport etc. Do not forget as a matured adult every leader has his/her agenda in terms of development. Dr. Busia built schools and other infrastructures, so as Gen. Acheampong, Dr.Limman, Ft Lt J.J Rawlings Mr. Kuffour so as Prof. Mills and Mr.Mahama.You should also know that at the time of independence the population was less than 2 million as compared to over 20 million today. Therefore among the list of leaders who had the easiest job to govern off course Dr. Nkrumah because there were less mouths to feed and ironically there was enough to cater for them but he misused it because he had misplaced priorities.
