No topic excites many pastors more than tithes and tithing. Waxing eloquent, pastors with fiery zeal, would teach about how if you pay tithes God would bless you. How your business would flourish, how you would find that rich husband and how all would go well in your life. Blessings would flow like the Jordan River and life would be a bed of hibiscus petals. Conversely, you are also threatened and psychologically terrorized for not paying tithes- there would be no breakthroughs in your life, God would take away from you. Nothing would go well for you. Worst of all, you would be cursed by God because you have stolen from Him. Like the mighty spear of Goliath, Malachi 3:10 is launched at your heart.

"Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. But you ask, 'How do we rob you?' In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse - the whole nation of you - because you are robbing me." (Malachi 3:8, 9)

This verse has been used to intimidate many Christians into shelling out 10% of their income as tithes. It is probably the only verse in the Bible that many pastors quote when preaching about tithes. Other verses in Leviticus and Deuteronomy that shed more light on the issue are almost never mentioned. Church members are kept in the dark by design.

Was God rebuking the nation of Israel or the nation of levitical priests in Malachi? Malachi 2:1, explains further,"And this commandment is for you, O priests." God was actually rebuking the Levites for abusing the trust of the people. They were not fairly using the tithes for the poor and needy. God is a spirit and does not need food but He wanted the poor to be fed. The Levites were the ones under a curse.

Who received tithes?

Tithe was God’s way of specifically taking care of the orphans, widows, strangers and poor Levites in Israel. This was the only reason God wanted food in his house. God does not need food.
Deuteronomy 26:12, clearly states that when all the tithe is collected “then you shall give it to the Levite, to the stranger to the orphan, and to the widow, that they may eat in your towns and be satisfied.”
Deuteronomy 14:28-29 New International Version (NIV) "bring all the tithes of that year’s produce and store it in your towns, so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own) and the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied, and so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands."
Did Jesus, Mathew and Paul receive tithes?
Jesus was from the line of Judah so could not receive tithes. Only Levites from the line of Levi could receive tithes. Though the twelve apostles were men of God, they could not receive tithes because of their tribal lineage. How then can pastors today ask for tithes? Are they Levites? If the apostle Paul is not a Levite so could not take tithes why are some pastors taking tithes? The fact that one is a man of God does not qualify one to receive tithes. Even prophets and other men of God in the Bible, not from the tribe of Levi, could not benefit from tithes.

Did Jesus and his apostles pay tithes?

Tithe was never taken in fish or silver or cash. Paul as a tent-maker was not required to pay tithes. Peter as a fisherman did not pay tithes on fish he caught. That was the law of God. None of the twelve apostles could pay tithes because they were not farmers or shepherds/ herders.

Did Abraham, Noah and Jacob pay tithes?

Abraham did not pay tithes. He gave ten percent of the spoils of war to Melchizedek, King of Salem. God did not command Abraham to give. It was from his free will. Abraham did not tithe from his personal property, and there is no record in the Bible that he did.

Jacob also gave a conditional 10% to God which was not a tithe.
There is no record of Jacob paying any tithes after this. The traditional 10% in Middle Eastern societies is different from the legalistic mosaic tithe from God. The mosaic tithe was not optional, it was the law.

Without tithes, the message of the Gospel could not be preached

God in His infinite wisdom asked for tithes to be used for the poor and needy. God did not request tithes to be used for pastor's salary, cars, church organ or choir robes. God explicitly said use it to feed the poor Levites and the orphans, widows and strangers.

God does not need tithes to spread His word. The apostles gave their lives to spread the gospel of Christ without taking tithes from anyone. Many churches function perfectly today without tithes. We cannot disobey God with the excuse that we are spreading the gospel.

Even if you are poor, unemployed and struggling financially, now is the time to pay your tithes.

Nooooo!!! This is twisting and misquoting the Bible because we want to take money from the poor. The Bible says do not take tithes from the poor and needy. The poor are to benefit from the tithes. They are to be given tithes. Telling the poor to pay tithes, with promises that God would open the windows of heaven and pour blessings on them is a big con game.

The Bible says those with less than ten goats or sheep were exempted from paying tithes. God did not take tithes from the poor. Telling the poor and needy that if they don't pay tithes God has cursed them is the ultimate in greed and callousness.
Some pastors tell poor church members to pay tithes before their rent or children’s school fees and expect miracles. Some tell the congregation not to worry about what the tithe is used for. They say to just pay the tithes and leave the rest to God.

Would paying tithes make you rich and prosperous?

The promise of breakthroughs and prosperity and material blessings is used as a bait to make many pour their hard-earned money into the bank accounts of some pastors. This is nothing but manipulation. If the gospel of Christ is about acquiring earthly possessions how come the apostle Paul was not rich? How come John the Baptist, Peter, John and the other apostles did not get financial breakthroughs? Many of Christ's apostles were persecuted and killed. Life was not rosy for them. Were they not blessed men of God? If you believe pastors who tell you that you would prosper financially if you pay tithes, then you need serious Bible study. People like Oprah Winfrey, Ted Turner, LeBron James etc. are very wealthy, but they do not pay tithes, they are not even Christians. If you believe paying tithes would open gates to riches for you, then you are in for great disappointment and cannot carry the cross of Christ.

Should I give to my church?

Yes, absolutely! Give to the church. Your offering helps the church a lot. Paul spoke about supporting the church. But give from your heart to God and expect nothing in return. Give because you love God. It is free-will, not a binding law like tithing. God had a special purpose for the tithes. It was to feed the poor and needy in society. It was to take care of the Levites who were poor, not wealthy pastors who have mansions, fancy cars and are far richer than most in the congregation

Should Christians pay tithes today?

Jesus and his apostles did not pay tithes, neither did they accept tithes. The Pharisees obeyed all the 613 mosaic laws, so they paid tithes. Today, Christians are not under the law, so we do not follow the Mosaic Law, as we are under grace and not the law. How come so much emphasis is laid on only tithes but not the other 613 laws? If we have to pay tithes then we have to follow all the laws, like the Pharisees. When a child disobeys the parent, he has to be stoned to death according to the old law. No Christian obeys that law today. However, some hold on to the law of tithing with the might of Samson. Why? Is it the money? The love of money...

Who is killing the church of Christ?

It is unlawful and unbiblical for anyone outside of the tribe of Levi to receive tithes, be they prophets, bishops, arch-bishops or reverend-doctors. Tithe has become the yoke around many Christians’ neck. When the clergy enslaves the masses and amass wealth at the expense of the poor it creates a history of resentment against the church. Many thinking people become suspicious of religion. When leaders of a faith insult the trust of their flock with misinformation and manipulation, the backlash can be unfavorable to all.
The gospel of Christ suffers when boys are molested by clergy just as when money becomes their main focus. Many centuries ago, Martin Luther had to revolt again the leaders of the church who were taking the faithful for fools. You can fool some of the people some of the time but all the people cannot be fooled all the time. At some point Europe woke up.The shady history of the church in Europe has forced many out of Christianity. Today Christianity is dying in Europe. No wonder, a recent pope said, the future of the church is in Africa. Are our pastors robbing God, are they killing the church of Christ?

Brother Ken, unlike many others, was selflessly highlighting the plight of prisoners, obviously, he couldn't be defending them and at the same time accusing them of being uncivilized.

Idiots cannot, and people of ill will do not care to understand "CONTEXT," in their haste to spread their "IGNORANCE", they quickly plapp their paws on a keyboard and allow their cut and paste mentality to take over.

There ought to be zero tolerance for IDIOTS who strut their ignorance as a badge of honor, by seeking to denigrate entire ethnic groups, or countries. Any African who spews insults at any African country, ought to be considered an internal enemy of African people, and treated as such.

Why are many Pastors leading many people into sin with this issue of tithe? There is no doubt that many are bringing amounts that do not represent 10% but they claim it is 10%. Is this not lying like Ananias and his wife?
If the "CURSE" in Malachi 3:10 is applicable to Christians today, then the death of Christ came to nothing. Galatians 3:13 says that Christ took away the curse of the law. Should we believe this or Malachi 3:10 as applicable for Christians today?

I like your arguments very well. But you are missing something. That is a pastor and Levites are the same in our modern Christianity. The pastors don't work and it is the responsibility of the church to take care of them. Then, after taking care of them we move on to the orphan, widows etc. The later is what is missing in our modern Christianity. But nothing forbids tithe paying in the bible. I live in the US and I can tell you that four weeks offering alone can not pay church mortgage let alone parsonage mortgage.

I don't have my Bible with me as I read now, so I can't give specific passages where what I' m presenting could be found. Yet, they are in the Bible and a little search would help bring them up.

The Bible makes very interesting revelation on tithes, somewhere in either Leviticus or Deuteronomy. In that passage God gives His Law on the tithes and commands that the tenth of the peoples' produce must be sent to the place where HE,God, has chosen to be served; and there (those paying the tithes should consume with their families ALL the tithes. However, they should leave some (no specific figure here) to the Levites for them to have some for themselves and the widows, orphans and strangers. The text goes on to add that in case the tenth of one's produce is too heavy and bulky to the chosen place where it should be eating, the one must sell the tenth for cash. The person, then carries the cash to the place; and you know what? Buy any food or drink, EVEN ALCOHOLIC DRINKS, AND CONSUME THEM THERE IN HONOUR OF THE GREAT GOD. Praise be to HIS NAME!

This is the original and the only law on tithe I know of in the Bible.

Dear Reader, it's clear from God's law that HE LOVES MANKIND TO THE MARROW and DO NOT NEED ANY HUMAN GIFT TO BE GOD. Instead He is for our HAPPINESS to the extent that he says we could use tithes to buy AKPETESHIE.

So why can't our Church leaders tell us all about tithes, but use the challenge in Malachi to get our monies. In fact they have, in the process, made Church attendance difficult for some of us and others lairs before God for under-declaring our incomes. money?

Nonetheless, I advise all Christians to read the Bible to enable them make decisions which would be pleasing to GOD only, but no one else.

Ignorantly some people think that pastors take to themselves the tithes members "pay" (wrong word, though). Well, perhaps some "pastors" may do that or are doing that. Many people forget that in any credible church, the pastor in charge does not even have direct access to church funds though he may be the main signatory to the church's bank accounts. But let us not forget that even the pastor cannot take any money from the bank without a second signatory and in some places even a third signatory is required. All I'm saying is simply that the administration of the finances and others of any credible church is done by the local Church Board of which the presing pastor is usually the Chairman. It is even the Board that pays the pastor his/her salary.
Furthermore, Rev. Frimpong should know that truly, initially tithe was a voluntary thing done by especially Abraham and Jacob but later God made it a law/commandment (I'm just sorry that I'm writing from a place where I don't have my Bible on hand to state the exact scriptures so readers should please pardon me. In fact the tithe (one-tenth of our income) DOES NOT belong to us. It belongs exclusively to God. It is not something the Christian PAY to God for something. It is exclusively God's and that is why we do not PAY tithes but we GIVE tithes. To me the expression that "Christians have to PAY tithe" to God is a wrong statement and the correct one should be "Christians have to GIVE tithes to God".
In the N.T. there is a statement by the Lord Jesus to the Pharisees where he commended the Pharisees for tithing on little little things like cumin and anise and said they OUGHT TO DO SUCH A THING but should not forget the weightier matters which were justice and mercy. There are indeed great blessings in giving to God what belongs to Him. So some of us will CONTINUE to give tithes to GOD on our earnings and keep preaching same as a service to God and Christendom. I think what Otabil is saying might be a true revelation from God but I feel he has meddled in politics too much that, now everything that comes from him is seen with a political lens.

The NDC party has a lot to answer for for sponsoring her and Lordina Mahama to study at GIMPA. For with what little knowledge they were exposed to there (never mind the fact people wrote their assignments for them and lecturers were pressurized to pass them)' they feel emboldened to be heard. People of their ilk should at best be seen but not heard as they can be a source of embarrassment to their nearest and dearest.

I am not surprised that Anita is doubting The prophesy of this great man of God. She is the person who accused an individual who sat on a seat she had imagined to be hers for the hearing of the election petition of using juju on her. Anita trivializes the role of women in our body politic and reverses all the good work of women like Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, Dr Mary Grant, the late Hawa Yakubu, and Esi Sutherland Addy. Can someone plas ask her to shut up once and for all.

The likes of Ursula Owusu, Sara Adwoa Safo, Hannah Tetteh, Nana Oye Lithur and Frances Asiam have taken the role of Ghanaian women in politics to a different level. These are women who are standing up tp be counted, and whose views are listened to carefully because they are meaningful and relevant.

Dont fall for these tricks. their profession and lively thrives on the pretext that they are prophets of God. It is like the sellers of products advertising their ware. In the case of the pastors they dont have to pay for advertising. They make all sorts of claims in their pulpits and get payed at the end of the day by their congregation through forced collections and the journalsists carry their message across to the unsuspecting populace.

Pastor Otabil is human and prone to make mistakes. He should not be judged by any human so that we also be judged.
Pastor is one of my mentors and I never missed his sermons any time I have the opportunity to listen to him. He is a respected man of God, there is no doubt about it.

Rev. Owusu Bempa and Tawia´s prophesy should not be anything new. Bempa was on NPP political platform praying and rebuking some evil forces he alleged was coming from the NOrth. He also assured that gathering that NPP was destined to win that election "one touch". When that prophesy failed to happen, he has never relented in predicting doom for this country.

As for Pastor Otabil, he senses defeat for his party and therefore and erroneously interpreting as something horrible happening to Ghana. Pastor Otabil and those other NPP "Men of God" should stop equating the imminent defeat of their party a disaster for Ghana.

They should stop playing their "dirty politics" from the pulpit or risk facing the wroth of the Almighty soon.

Anything outside this spiritual principle is an act of pride and self aggrandizement if not why is he keeping the details of the revelation and only brought the topic or introduction. This is a way of willfully causing fearmongering. With the present situation of the country when the SC Judges are calling to order those statements from people that relate to Evil befalling Ghana, Dr Mensa Otabil shouldn't be an exception. The rule of Law demands that Dr Mensa Otabil be called by the SC Judges to explain to the court the details, nature and type of Evil he sensed befalling Ghana in a month's time. Ghanaians would want to know who is causing the said Evil, why and how the Evil will befall Ghana. A renown man of God of his caliber should know better.

I seriously do not understand why people are aggrieved about what DrOtabil said. Did he say he has had a revelation from God? No! He said he senses a heaviness. All he did was to urge Ghanaians to pray. What is wrong with prayer? Prayer is good. So all these people insulting him, is it that you did not understand the English he spoke or what. As human beings, sometimes our instincts tell us or urge us to do things. It is only during the aftermath that one realises that he/she should have obeyed his/her instincts. The Bible says, "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem". Is it therefore wrong for the man of God to urge us to pray for the peace of Ghana? Where did he go wrong? He was surely not in contempt of court as he made no reference forsoever to the ongoing election petition.

This is what happened in the days of Noah. The people mocked him for building an ark. They all ended up being drowned. Dr Otabil is not building an ark to invite people in. All he said is for Ghanaians to pray for peace. It is as simple as that.

Otabil has said that he felt something heavy falling upon Ghana and illiterates and ignorant poor believers want Ghanaians to trust him and start praying.

To avoid conflict you have to be tolerant, honest,respectful of others opinion and political and religious choice. You don't need to pray God before God has already recommended to you to respect the above mentioned qualities.

Everybody should condemn the mention of civil war. Is Otabil a prophet? Has he ever prophesied. What makes him think that in a months time, there will be war. Will his prophesy change if the supreme court postpone judgement to after one month?
If Otabil is indeed a man of God, his pray to God about his revelation is more important that preaching it on the pulpit. Jesus with all his powers was not prophesying about people's death, he cured the sick, raised the death. What can Otabil do but to preach war? What is Otabil doing to prevent or avert his prophesy. We live to see.
