When Kwaku Baako informed us about the atrocities of Kwesi Pratt during PNDC Regime, some of us did not believe until the truth was confirmed during the NRC. Kwesi Pratt is the most dangerous Journalist Ghana had ever have, he had the gut to recommend his fellow journalists to be executed by PNDC. Pratt even recommended Baako to be killed by the regime, thank God Baako was instead touchered violently and severely but his life was spared. This is what Kwesi Pratt can do. Now Pratt is a secret agent to NDC and US Embassy in Ghana. May God forgive Pratt and spare him the untold evils that will come upon him and his generations. The souls of those journalist killed through Pratt's recommendations to PNDC will never forgive Pratt. Now Pratt has the guts to take Diplomatic Passport and smuggled his weak-headed children to work at the Ministries under Mills NDC, may God forgive Pratt and his dependance and spare them of the evils ahead of them...

The stupid police officers who detained the girls should not just be fired but prosecuted as well. Ghana's problems are not financial but idiots in positions of authority. I am not just referring to political leaders. The head teacher should also be fired if she did not take immediate steps to help free the girls. This is just plain stupidness on the part of institutional heads

Our educational policy should make it a must for our children to be thought their basic rights at school from JSS and make teachers with parents alike know their limit of power over the rights of children so not to abuse them.

The 19 year old man drummer should be made to answer fully as to why he took the school minor hostage and the two innocent school girls given compensation by the education authorities as result of the irresponsible behaviour of the school teacher who took them to the police, denting their clean credibility and image with full apology.

This story simply does not add up. As an educationist myself, I can understand class or group assignments being given to students (or pupils in this case) but to ask 13 - 15 year old pupils to go and find out information at petrol filling stations on their own without any tutor accompanying them on that exercise smacks of gross irresponsibility on the part of the school, not to talk of the so-called science teacher. That is, if the parents' story is to be believed.

Whilst we are at it, the simple question is: when was this assignment given and when was it due? what time slot in the teaching day was allotted for this assignment? were the pupils told to use their 'spare time' or out of school hours to undertake the work (which in itself is irresponsible for such a young age of pupils)? These are all unanswered questions.

Back to the story's headline: that a "female teacher" would deem it fit and proper to ask the police to intervene and to "detain" these teens is also another yet unclear matter. If indeed the story as told is true, one can only presume that the teacher did this because the pupils were absenting themselves (probably on more occasions that would be expected) and / or that there were other issues related to such absences (including truancy, being used by pimps etc.).

That said, and despite any good intentions of the "female teacher", the right course of action would have been to invoke a school disciplinary procedure which would automatically include the parents being informed and invited (at an appropriate stage of the process) and if found culpable, the necessary warnings and punishment being meted out to the guilty ones.

This sounds like a straightforward commonsense approach to instilling and ensuring discipline at school. I would suggest therefore that the fact that a teacher would deem it necessary to report the pupils to the police indicates that the school in question either does not apply its disciplinary procedures properly and / or various parties are unaware of the procedures or how they are to be applied.

It is also an indictment of the poor state of parental discipline, that one's child would be found wanting when the basic and simple acts of attending and returning from school on time, and whilst there, following educational instruction and LEARNING are all that we ask of our children and pupils at school. Certainly if any of my own kids was found wanting when it came to school attendance, punctuality and doing their school work, I would be the least amused.

Indeed in a good school in this day and age of telecommunications (where even illiterate adults own mobile phones), the parents would be called and alerted to the fact that their ward is absent from school and to find out whatever the matter is, then take things from there.

This whole story has too many more questions that beg for credible answers and before we jump to any conclusions, there is a need for sober reflection. To me, this calls for the education authority (local, regional and indeed national) to examine this as a test case about school procedures and to simply re-run the school disciplinary procedures and see where the 'fault lines' may have been in this case, and to provide a simple algorithm of guidelines and perhaps run workshops for groups of local schools (and for parents to try and streamline the procedures again in failing schools.

Though I hate to make comparisons with other jurisdictions (supposedly more advanced than Ghana), I would say that in England, it is an offence punishable by law, for a child to absent themselves from school (or play truant) without proper justification and indeed there have been cases of parents and their children being sent to jail for violating the rules. I am also aware that in Ghana about 11 years ago now, with development of the FREE BASIC education system, there was talk of 'penalising' parents if their kids were not attending school (I do not recall exactly). If that is the case, then what are the procedures? and one wonders if this "female teacher" was standing on the strength of that ruling to involve the police in this case.

We have some way to go, but make no mistake - If Ghana's educational system does not improve and if we continue to have failing schools, not only will our development remain stagnated, the divide between the 'haves and have nots' will only widen and we store huge problems for ourselves in the future.

We still have an opportunity to address and fix these problems and bear in mind, we are talking about GIRLS here and teenage pregnancies and prostitution among school-age girls has been in the news for some time now.
