Never, ever place a period at the end of your title, dude! I've seen so many people on this site commit the same unpardonable writing error.
Another common error in feature titles looks like this:
"Rawlings: Don't Attack the President" versus "Rawlings, Don't Attack the President"
Interestingly, many people mix them up, and I know it once I see it!
Now, I want readers to tell me the difference between the two.
So many of our writers should get some proofreading help before they send their articles for publication, as the standard here has become sickeningly low.
Sadly, everyone can get an article published on this site, but that does not mean that everyone here is a writer! And the fact that the website does not proofread articles before publishing them makes this site look so trashy these days. Ugh!

Kwaku you have said a lot, but sad enough it will all fall onto death ears. I have lived outside Ghana for 30 years, go to visit every year, I haven taken my family obligation very seriousely, and have taken on the total financial responsibility of putting 6 of my nephews and nieces through secodary school. But apart from the house I built for my mother I don't have my own house in Ghana. I get a lot of grief from folks in my village who think it is a disgrace on my part that a man of my age and so called prosperity, I do not have a mansion in my village. They will not accept the fact that it is my choice not to build a house until I retire. Every nephew of mine wants me pay connection man to enable them to go to abrokyire but they have no clue what they will do there nor have any idea how on to prepare for a visa interview so prdictably they are denied visas when they apply for one. Hmmmm Ghana, we do have a problem with how see success and how it is measured.

Bob figured he'd play it safe. "I think I'll try the second part of the question first."

"Okay, Bob, here is your question: And in what year did it happen?"

We seek bribes or engage in corruption for its easy way out,we export raw products bcoz its an easy way out,we trash and defecate all over bcoz we can't stand the test of all the work it takes to do it proper,we always keep unkempt homes due to our lethargy, our rd side shacks are poorly done bcoz we lack a diligent & disciplined approach and we have few manufactured exports bcoz we can't brainstorm, work hard, develop our own knowhow and be diligent enough to have our own intellectual properties thus we'd rather deal with our easier gold, cocoa and oil commodities.

Your observations lacks emperical or scientific merit. What you did is tantamount to saying, "The average Ghanaian cannot afford a three square meal a day." If I may ask, who is the average Ghanaian? What percentage of our population constitute the average Ghanaians? What are the traits of the average Ghanaian? What makes the author an average or a non average Ghanaian? Without any scientific approach to articles like yours, it becomes a guess work or an observation borne out of your feelings or anxities. Set out your parameters right before your emotional reasonings get the better part of you. Good article but it lacks empirical substance.

One thing that is killing Ghana is the non availability of reliable statistics pertaining to our national life. For example, as it stands, there is no statistical data on the unemployment rate in the country. How then do you reduce or tackle unemployment? Over generalisation of issues would not help. Let us get concrete information before we arrive at any illogical conclusion. I still insist, it is not enough to say Ghanaians love the easy way out without palpable instances to buttress your claim. Perhaps Adu Gyamfi can use Asuom as his sample space to collect data to arrive at the notion that Ghanaians love the easy way out. Adu Gyamfi has done a good job but he can do better.

So you want to imply that we need statistics and studies in order to figure out how many of our river bodies are polluted or why we've been literally swallowed by zillion tons of trash and so on? Oh, I get it, the bad roads we're driving on all over the country need studies to determine if indeed we have any accident-prone roads and it's no one's fault, huh? Yes, we need statistics to determine if indeed the self- appointed pot-holes 'contractors 'on our road we see on weekends are not the true picture of the situation in Ghana.Oh, you're right, we need statistics to prove that we're in a mess and that the majority of Ghanaians are not very superb citizens who want to see Ghana prosper. I don't know about you but, I know that Ghana's downfall or progress is inside job and until we all see that we all have a role to play we're in for trouble. No amount of studies can change that. Aren't you tired of attending funerals on weekends because of motor vehicle accidents or I need statistics for that one too? You're kidding me right? Let me know when you figure out through your studies if there is a way for Ghanaians to clear their goods at the harbor within hours ,without any headache and heartache. Prove me wrong if you can. Have a nice day.

National character is something even a tourist can found out the moment he or she arrives at a country and spend few days looking around.
A good friend I took to Ghana from the states, told me after visiting Accra and Kumasi that, you easily tell the calibre of engineers in each country by looking at the architectural planning of their cities.
Understanding certain faults within society, does not depend on all that expensive scientific data collection.
Water is not flowing in many parts of the nation for decades now even though pipes has been laid. Lights do not come on when you need them even though wires has been connected and meters fixed.
If Ghana has been an individual before a psycho-therapist, it will take only thirty minutes to analyze and tell her what are the faults and the demons inherent in her soul.

This is a philosophical insight into attitudes of Ghanaians as they go about their daily chores; the workings of the mind of people in search of survival which need not be reduced to numbers before it can be described as scientific. It is an observation, and observation is a scientific approach. The author's approach is descriptive, still a scientific approach; and if you are familiar with the works of Karl Marx and Freud you will appreciate what this guy has done, although he does not report his observations in the usual research reporting framework. But does he need to do that? I don't think so. The message is clear and loud. Statistics are not the alpha and omega in the search for knowledge; I have my suspicions about the use of statistics, and the men and women at IMF and UNDP will be the first to tell you about their reservations as well, especially in the development industry. While statistics are useful, how they are generated and manipulated can take much of their credibility away. Freud observed just a few subjects and made incredible conclusions still valid in psychoanalysis. Statistics can be useful but don't worship them.

Karl Marx and co did not come about their findings via over generalisation. Any serious minded researcher knows that observation as a tool of research is subject to too many flaws. Sigmund Freud at a point in his research used his family to conduct certain aspects of his research. He went beyond mere observation to concretise his views. In this regard, do you expect me to swallow hook, line and sinker somebody's view that the average Ghanaian loves to take the easy way out? Merely deliberating on challenges confronting the country is not a substitute for a unassailable evidence. Anas Aremeyaw Anas investigations and evidence perhaps best drive home my argument.

If you were a social scientist, which I guess you are, I would expect you to be curious enough to take this guy's observation as a hypothesis and conduct a research to confirm or disconfirm it. It would serve yourself and the nation better instead of trying to discredit it without evidence.

most average people look for the end product of true hardwork and desire to have that but avoid what it takes to get the end product.
end products such as material stuff: luxury cars, nice homes, nice clothing, friendships etc. They however do not want to do the treal work involved in getting to these desired end products, like getting the right education or training that will enable them get their desired job or create their own job, not working hard at the job they have but desiring to be promoted to the very top and be called boss or CEO, need I say more?
Our culture of materialism and wanting to show off to others that we have made it when in actuality we are struggling and taking short cuts to impress is what is killing Ghanaans and africans!
saving for a retirement fund , getting an education , working tirelessly and selflessly, raising up children in the way they should go, building solid communities , are all things that require deferred gratification which many cannot endure in our present day culture. these are not in and of themselves bad things , i wish that even half of Ghanaians or africans or blacks the world over would work at these , we would be a totally different people!

Kwaku,
You are spot on! All of us want the easy way out! State monies have been stolen over the years. Last year, the government over-spent its budget by a whopping 1.3Billion. Instead of looking for and punishing the culprits to deter recurrence, the government has proposed new taxes - phone calls, farm inputs, etc, (for a country that already cannot feed its people.) Presto, more money to be stolen in 2013!
There are market and house fires all over the place. It should not be rocket science to figure out that when you import third rate shoddy Chinese electrical appliances and wire them with inferior Chinese cables and sockets, they could cause fires. No, that is too difficult for us to figure out for ourselves. Fly in Yankee technicians. They might blame it on "our enemies, the arsonists."
There is not enough electicity to go round. Instead of thinking of concrete ways to boost supplies, we take the easy way out, Dum so! Dum so!
Yes, we have very low aspirations, so we elect rubbish leaders, who give us rubbish services. Then we take the easy way out, moan in private and take it on poor wives at home!!
