IS OTABIL ROBBING GOD--TITHES?

No topic excites many pastors more than tithes and tithing. Waxing eloquent, pastors with fiery zeal, would teach about how if you pay tithes God would bless you. How your business would flourish, how you would find that rich husband and how all would go well in your life. Blessings would flow like the Jordan River and life would be a bed of hibiscus petals. Conversely, you are also threatened and psychologically terrorized for not paying tithes- there would be no breakthroughs in your life, God would take away from you. Nothing would go well for you. Worst of all, you would be cursed by God because you have stolen from Him. Like the mighty spear of Goliath, Malachi 3:10 is launched at your heart.

"Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. But you ask, 'How do we rob you?' In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse - the whole nation of you - because you are robbing me." (Malachi 3:8, 9)

This verse has been used to intimidate many Christians into shelling out 10% of their income as tithes. It is probably the only verse in the Bible that many pastors quote when preaching about tithes. Other verses in Leviticus and Deuteronomy that shed more light on the issue are almost never mentioned. Church members are kept in the dark by design.

Was God rebuking the nation of Israel or the nation of levitical priests in Malachi? Malachi 2:1, explains further,"And this commandment is for you, O priests." God was actually rebuking the Levites for abusing the trust of the people. God is a spirit and does not need food but He wanted the poor to be fed. The Levites were the ones under a curse. Christ broke the curse of the law, so Christians cannot be under a curse today for not obeying the law of tithes.

Who received tithes?

Tithe was God’s way of specifically taking care of the poor Levites, orphans, widows, strangers in Israel. This was the only reason God wanted food in his house. God does not need food.
Deuteronomy 26:12, clearly states that when all the tithe is collected “then you shall give it to the Levite, to the stranger to the orphan, and to the widow, that they may eat in your towns and be satisfied.”
Deuteronomy 14:28-29 New International Version (NIV) "bring all the tithes of that year’s produce and store it in your towns, so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own) and the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied, and so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands."
Did Jesus, Mathew and Paul receive tithes?

Jesus was from the line of Judah so could not receive tithes. Only Levites from the line of Levi could receive tithes. Though the twelve apostles were men of God, they could not receive tithes because of their tribal lineage. How then can pastors today ask for tithes? Are they Levites? If the apostle Paul is not a Levite so could not take tithes why are some pastors taking tithes? The fact that one is a man of God does not qualify one to receive tithes. Even prophets and other men of God in the Bible, not from the tribe of Levi, could not benefit from tithes.

Did Jesus and his apostles pay tithes?

Tithe was never taken in fish or silver or cash. Paul as a tent-maker was not required to pay tithes. Peter as a fisherman did not pay tithes on fish he caught. That was the law of God. None of the twelve apostles could pay tithes because they were not farmers or shepherds/ herders.

Did Abraham, Noah and Jacob pay tithes?

Abraham did not pay tithes. He gave ten percent of the spoils of war to Melchizedek, King of Salem. God did not command Abraham to give. It was from his free will. Abraham did not tithe from his personal property, and there is no record in the Bible that he did.

Jacob also gave a conditional 10% to God which was not a tithe.
There is no record of Jacob paying any tithes after this. The traditional 10% in Middle Eastern societies is different from the legalistic mosaic tithe from God. The mosaic tithe was not optional, it was the law.

Without tithes, the message of the Gospel could not be preached

God in His infinite wisdom asked for tithes to be used for the poor and needy. God did not request tithes to be used for pastor's salary, cars, church organ or choir robes. God explicitly said use it to feed the poor Levites and the orphans, widows and strangers.

God does not need tithes to spread His word. The apostles gave their lives to spread the gospel of Christ without taking tithes from anyone. Many churches function perfectly today without tithes. We cannot disobey God with the excuse that we are spreading the gospel.

Even if you are poor, unemployed and struggling financially, now is the time to pay your tithes.

Nooooo!!! This is twisting and misquoting the Bible because we want to take money from the poor. The Bible says do not take tithes from the poor and needy. The poor are to benefit from the tithes. They are to be given tithes. Telling the poor to pay tithes, with promises that God would open the windows of heaven and pour blessings on them is a big con game.

The Bible says those with less than ten goats or sheep were exempted from paying tithes. God did not take tithes from the poor. Telling the poor and needy that if they don't pay tithes God has cursed them is the ultimate in greed and callousness.
Some pastors tell poor church members to pay tithes before their rent or children’s school fees and expect miracles. Some tell the congregation not to worry about what the tithe is used for. They say to just pay the tithes and leave the rest to God.

Would paying tithes make you rich and prosperous?

The promise of breakthroughs and prosperity and material blessings is used as a bait to make many pour their hard-earned money into the bank accounts of some pastors. This is nothing but manipulation. If the gospel of Christ is about acquiring earthly possessions how come the apostle Paul was not rich? How come John the Baptist, Peter, John and the other apostles did not get financial breakthroughs? Many of Christ's apostles were persecuted and killed. Life was not rosy for them. Were they not blessed men of God? If you believe pastors who tell you that you would prosper financially if you pay tithes, then you need serious Bible study. People like Oprah Winfrey, Ted Turner, LeBron James etc. are very wealthy, but they do not pay tithes, they are not even Christians. If you believe paying tithes would open gates to riches for you, then you are in for great disappointment and cannot carry the cross of Christ.

Should I give to my church?

Yes, absolutely! Give to the church. Your offering helps the church a lot. Paul spoke about supporting the church. But give from your heart to God and expect nothing in return. Give because you love God. It is free-will, not a binding law like tithing. God had a special purpose for the tithes. It was to feed the poor and needy in society. It was to take care of the Levites who were poor, not wealthy pastors who have mansions, fancy cars and are far richer than most in the congregation

Should Christians pay tithes today?

Jesus and his apostles did not pay tithes, neither did they accept tithes. The Pharisees obeyed all the 613 mosaic laws, so they paid tithes. Today, Christians are not under the law, so we do not follow the Mosaic Law, as we are under grace and not the law. How come so much emphasis is laid on only tithes but not the other 613 laws? If we have to pay tithes then we have to follow all the laws, like the Pharisees. When a child disobeys the parent, he has to be stoned to death according to the old law. No Christian obeys that law today. However, some hold on to the law of tithing with the might of Samson. Why? Is it the money? The love of money...

Who is killing the church of Christ?

It is unlawful and unbiblical for anyone outside of the tribe of Levi to receive tithes, be they prophets, bishops, arch-bishops or reverend-doctors. Tithe has become the yoke around many Christians’ neck. When the clergy enslaves the masses and amass wealth at the expense of the poor it creates a history of resentment against the church. Many thinking people become suspicious of religion. When leaders of a faith insult the trust of their flock with misinformation and manipulation, the backlash can be unfavorable to all.
The gospel of Christ suffers when boys are molested by clergy just as when money becomes their main focus. Many centuries ago, Martin Luther had to revolt again the leaders of the church who were taking the faithful for fools. You can fool some of the people some of the time but all the people cannot be fooled all the time. At some point Europe woke up.The shady history of the church in Europe has forced many out of Christianity. Today Christianity is dying in Europe. No wonder, a recent pope said, the future of the church is in Africa. Are our pastors robbing God, are they killing the church of Christ?

How many times have pastors in Ghana not made these kind of false prophecies? The Christian Council must advise these self-acclaimed men of God to do their work accordingly. In no time, their followers will realize that they are entrepreneurs and not men of God.

God does not need the fact/drive for the request to answer the prayer.
He has a clear agenda for saying what he said. What about if some unscrupulous people decide to take advantage of what he said to foment trouble to fulfill his prophecy

Apart from a church service in his own church, where he preached to his own flock, how else did you expect him to have expressed his feelings? Should he have called a press conference to express these feelings or bought advertising space in the media to do same?
Now, he talks to members of his own church (perhaps less than 0.0002% of the 24million Ghanians), and look at the bashing he receives. What would have been the magnitude of these bashing if he had gone to the media?
And what would it have been if he had said he declared that the statement was a prophecy from God?

I have insisted that Dr Otabil knows the difference between 'prophecy' and 'feelings'. He would, therefore, have had no difficulty saying that,God has revealed to him or say, 'Thus says the Lord...'
But In this particular instance, he expressed his personal human inner feeling,not necessarily God's. Is there any offense in one expressing his feelings? And especially in his own home (i.e. to his own lock of church members).

I believe that whoever planted the statement in the media was a spy sent to report on the man for public vilification, after all matters (especially,controversies like prophecies) about religious leaders always make headlines.

Let's leave Dr Otabil alone for Ghanians who have ears to hear, for so were prophets of old treated.

His action is just to create panic and fear in Ghana.
Otabil thinks he is smart but any seriously discerning Ghanaian can identify that he makes his prophesy in a win win situation. Let his brainwashed followers know that some of us are smarter than him. Now if after the election there is violence, he can claim he prophesied so but Ghanaians did not fast and pray as he advised. If nothing happens, then he can also say because he prophesied and Ghanaians fasted and prayed, God saved Ghana. Why can't he tell us what exactly will happen to Ghanaians and when? These one man churches have for a long time now found ways of threatening Ghanaians and especially their congregation with hell fire that will burn them for a thousand years if they do not pay tithes, sow seeds in the church in the form of money towards the cause of the church. We see poor women who cannot even afford food for their children, health payments for their family members struggling to pay tithes and other donations to these pastors who live ostentatious lives. They trick people to throw their bread into the river and in the end they shall have it back when they themselves are the worst of sinners. Why should I throw my bread into the river? How am I going to get it when I don't eat fish.
It is Otabil who is calling a curse on himself for using the name of God in vain. How many of these many prophets and supposed MEN OF GOD sleep with other people's wife who attend their churches, have concubines and engage in sexual encounters with girls(and now boys)? People are insulting Pratt because he works for NDC but we also have to reason that such prophesies affect the poor and especially women. If his prophesy is true, let him tell us what it will be and when it will be. If anything happens or nothing happens, it was not because of his prophesy or efforts. You can call me any name and I don't care. I will NEVER yield to such tricks, con and useless prophesies by the supposed MEN OF GOD. Why is it that God does not prophesy to pastors of traditional churches like Methodist, Presbyterian, SDA, Anglican, Catholic pastors but to only him and the other one man churches, and only when there is going to be an election? Have people thought of that? God gave us brains so let us use them. Jesus himself acknowledged that in the last days, there shall be false prophets some of who shall come to claim they are the Christ. That is what we are having now.

Tithe was God’s way of specifically taking care of the poor Levites, orphans, widows, strangers in Israel. This was the only reason God wanted food in his house. God does not need food.
Deuteronomy 26:12, clearly states that when all the tithe is collected “then you shall give it to the Levite, to the stranger to the orphan, and to the widow, that they may eat in your towns and be satisfied.”
Deuteronomy 14:28-29 New International Version (NIV) "bring all the tithes of that year’s produce and store it in your towns, so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own) and the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied, and so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands."
Did Jesus, Mathew and Paul receive tithes?

Jesus was from the line of Judah so could not receive tithes. Only Levites from the line of Levi could receive tithes. Though the twelve apostles were men of God, they could not receive tithes because of their tribal lineage. How then can pastors today ask for tithes? Are they Levites? If the apostle Paul is not a Levite so could not take tithes why are some pastors taking tithes? The fact that one is a man of God does not qualify one to receive tithes. Even prophets and other men of God in the Bible, not from the tribe of Levi, could not benefit from tithes.

Did Jesus and his apostles pay tithes?

Tithe was never taken in fish or silver or cash. Paul as a tent-maker was not required to pay tithes. Peter as a fisherman did not pay tithes on fish he caught. That was the law of God. None of the twelve apostles could pay tithes because they were not farmers or shepherds/ herders.

Did Abraham, Noah and Jacob pay tithes?

Abraham did not pay tithes. He gave ten percent of the spoils of war to Melchizedek, King of Salem. God did not command Abraham to give. It was from his free will. Abraham did not tithe from his personal property, and there is no record in the Bible that he did.

Jacob also gave a conditional 10% to God which was not a tithe.
There is no record of Jacob paying any tithes after this. The traditional 10% in Middle Eastern societies is different from the legalistic mosaic tithe from God. The mosaic tithe was not optional, it was the law.

Without tithes, the message of the Gospel could not be preached

God in His infinite wisdom asked for tithes to be used for the poor and needy. God did not request tithes to be used for pastor's salary, cars, church organ or choir robes. God explicitly said use it to feed the poor Levites and the orphans, widows and strangers.

God does not need tithes to spread His word. The apostles gave their lives to spread the gospel of Christ without taking tithes from anyone. Many churches function perfectly today without tithes. We cannot disobey God with the excuse that we are spreading the gospel.

Even if you are poor, unemployed and struggling financially, now is the time to pay your tithes.

Nooooo!!! This is twisting and misquoting the Bible because we want to take money from the poor. The Bible says do not take tithes from the poor and needy. The poor are to benefit from the tithes. They are to be given tithes. Telling the poor to pay tithes, with promises that God would open the windows of heaven and pour blessings on them is a big con game.

The Bible says those with less than ten goats or sheep were exempted from paying tithes. God did not take tithes from the poor. Telling the poor and needy that if they don't pay tithes God has cursed them is the ultimate in greed and callousness.
Some pastors tell poor church members to pay tithes before their rent or children’s school fees and expect miracles. Some tell the congregation not to worry about what the tithe is used for. They say to just pay the tithes and leave the rest to God.

Would paying tithes make you rich and prosperous?

The promise of breakthroughs and prosperity and material blessings is used as a bait to make many pour their hard-earned money into the bank accounts of some pastors. This is nothing but manipulation. If the gospel of Christ is about acquiring earthly possessions how come the apostle Paul was not rich? How come John the Baptist, Peter, John and the other apostles did not get financial breakthroughs? Many of Christ's apostles were persecuted and killed. Life was not rosy for them. Were they not blessed men of God? If you believe pastors who tell you that you would prosper financially if you pay tithes, then you need serious Bible study. People like Oprah Winfrey, Ted Turner, LeBron James etc. are very wealthy, but they do not pay tithes, they are not even Christians. If you believe paying tithes would open gates to riches for you, then you are in for great disappointment and cannot carry the cross of Christ.

Should I give to my church?

Yes, absolutely! Give to the church. Your offering helps the church a lot. Paul spoke about supporting the church. But give from your heart to God and expect nothing in return. Give because you love God. It is free-will, not a binding law like tithing. God had a special purpose for the tithes. It was to feed the poor and needy in society. It was to take care of the Levites who were poor, not wealthy pastors who have mansions, fancy cars and are far richer than most in the congregation

Should Christians pay tithes today?

Jesus and his apostles did not pay tithes, neither did they accept tithes. The Pharisees obeyed all the 613 mosaic laws, so they paid tithes. Today, Christians are not under the law, so we do not follow the Mosaic Law, as we are under grace and not the law. How come so much emphasis is laid on only tithes but not the other 613 laws? If we have to pay tithes then we have to follow all the laws, like the Pharisees. When a child disobeys the parent, he has to be stoned to death according to the old law. No Christian obeys that law today. However, some hold on to the law of tithing with the might of Samson. Why? Is it the money? The love of money...

Who is killing the church of Christ?

It is unlawful and unbiblical for anyone outside of the tribe of Levi to receive tithes, be they prophets, bishops, arch-bishops or reverend-doctors. Tithe has become the yoke around many Christians’ neck. When the clergy enslaves the masses and amass wealth at the expense of the poor it creates a history of resentment against the church. Many thinking people become suspicious of religion. When leaders of a faith insult the trust of their flock with misinformation and manipulation, the backlash can be unfavorable to all.
The gospel of Christ suffers when boys are molested by clergy just as when money becomes their main focus. Many centuries ago, Martin Luther had to revolt again the leaders of the church who were taking the faithful for fools. You can fool some of the people some of the time but all the people cannot be fooled all the time. At some point Europe woke up.The shady history of the church in Europe has forced many out of Christianity. Today Christianity is dying in Europe. No wonder, a recent pope said, the future of the church is in Africa. Are our pastors robbing God, are they killing the church of Christ?

Some of us get offended about how these latter day prophets prophesy about the payment of tithes, sowing seeds in the church in the form of money and threaten people who fail to pay them will burn in hell. We feel offended by the dubious means they use to deceive people especially women who are vulnerable and believe in all their pastors say. Paying tithes do not make one a Christian. Instead of feeding the congregations the word of God, they rather rob them and fleece them. I need this answer from you. Why can't these prophets make one single good prophesy about Ghana. Are they prophets of doom? Nobody is abusing the word of God but how it is being used by these con pastors. Why is it that when there is going to be an election, that is when they prophesy a lot. Many of these prophesies do not come to pass. We are simply tired of their lies and duplicity.
I am a Seventh Day Adventist and know much about tithes. My pastors do not threaten me with Hell fire if I do not pay tithe. The payment of tithes became a requirement because the Levites who became priests and were responsible for the day to day activities of the worship of God when the Israelites got to the promised land did not work. As a matter of fact the family of Levi were not given part of the land of Israel like the other families had. So, the purpose of the tithe was to ensure that the Levites had food to eat. Tithe was paid in the form of food. Malachi 3:10 explains why tithes should be paid-"...so there shall be food in my house What about our latter day prophets? There are some that you have to pay money to see them. Some are big time business me, others help drug dealer and others are even drug dealers themselves. Are these the people we call MEN OF GOD that we should pay tithes to? It is not only tithe that Christians are encouraged to pay.

Regardless of what is preached in the pulpit or stage for some people, any Christian giving should be of FREE WILL, and without coercion!

It's written in the Bible that: "the Lord will not do a thing unless He reveals it to His prophets." Ghanaians shouldn't joke with the word of the living God. Believe in His prophets so ye may prosper, thus sayeth the living God. May His name be praised forever more. Amen!

Ghanaians and whole world have heard what the NDC scout said that sent him to jail for 3 days. And that wasn't an isolated statement. They've been going around issuing threats as if they are mightier than the Supreme Court or they're above the laws of the land.

Dr. Otabil only said what he feels in his spirit and the kind of revelation he's had in our post-election petition hearing. He went on to prophesy that: "No, there won't be any wars or coups; that we shall not allow such situation to happen in Ghana!" among others when he preached his sermon. It is very interesting to note how the NDC and some so-called men of God, would turn around and misconstrue the statements made by the renowned preacher and teacher.

Some Ghanaians have soon forgotten how the NDC sought to demonize Dr. Otatbil, when he disagreed with them and refused to allow portions of his recorde sermons to be used in polical campaigning, before the 2012 elections.

The man of God has become a public enemy for NDC and their supporters, although, Pastor Otabil has taught many, has fed many and helped thousands of Ghanaians through his teachings, his Central University College and charity.

This world is a wonderful place; people will do all sorts of dirty things, esp. to innocent ones, just for their own wicked and selfish interest. Wonders, our elder say, will never end!

Ghanaians should be greateful to Dr. Mensah Otabil, but not to vilify him. To try to defame the man of God for his sensible remarks is not right!

What Jantuah has to know is that anybody must think deeply on the implications of his talks before he opens his month to talk. He must weigh what he wants to say. Is it true or not that Otabil put fear and panic on people?

In any case, if something bad happens to Ghana and the people of Ghana in the coming weeks or months he should be held responsible and part of the cause that has brought what he said will fall upon Ghana.

Kwesi Pratt is 100% right by accusing him of causing fear and panic among Ghanaians.

Remember today's world does not swallow whatever comes out of the mouths of pastors. For a long time, people have witnessed the slow self-denigration of the priesthood by the priests, pastors or whatever you choose to call them. Otabil incurs the wrath of the people because of his past bombastic statements. Remember he felt the discovery of oil in Ghana was a travesty. Otabils is hiding behind the priesthood and behaving just like a sour politician. Until he chooses to be more circumspect in his utterances, Otabil will always ignite the vitriol of his opponents.

I won't vilify Otabil but if he does something seriously wrong, I will rebuke him as I would expect he does so to me if I do wrong. It's true Otabil sermon took place in his church but guess what, the media only reports what bites so as to sell. That is why Otabil cannot be left of the hook because he was aware of the presence of the media and by extension should have known the implications of his choice of words on the state.

What their evil and shallow minds should be aware is that God will deal with them at His own time. They should remember that they will surely reap what they are sowing for God's justice is inexorable as day and night for those who deliberately and persistently perpetrate iniquity and wickedness. So let them keep on treating God with mockery and contempt for the time of reckoning will definitely come. The justice of God grinds slowly but it grinds exceedingly fine.

It's because of the people like you that these so called men of God are abusing us. Otabil should pray without leting anybody know what he was feeling. He just wanted to draw attention on him. Let him go and sleep with what he felt. Nothing bad will fall upon Ghana, never and never. Ghana does not belong to Christians but to Ghanaians whether christians, muslems or tradidtional believers and that's all.
