How can we train and educate all these economists, financial gurus and yet have no clue as to revenue generation for a government to function. Do we teach taxation, revenue and government finances in our schools and universities at all? I studied Engineering but at Stanford we were made to take a full course in Finance of Infrastructure and Engineering-Economic Planning. We were taught how to make public projects and Life-Line Support Infrastructure Systems pay for themselves through levies and taxation and other instruments. Let us use our heads, please!!!! Can any of us imagine how much New York City raises through property taxes and other levying instruments? Go figure!!!

Yes I agree with you but the best way to be equitable in tax administration is that evrybody should pay and then the government should decide where its priorities are and which areas to support. there is no point exempting educational institutions or churches that are run as private businesses and not socisl institutions and then the owners pocket the profits without declaring them in their personal incomes. They then channel such monies to East Legon.

Tax is strategic tool for development. In other words the big picture must always be looked at when gov't is making tax decisions. We have today and tomorrow. If the gov't just thinks of today by taxing everything, it can retard development as the private sector will not have the funds for expansion and further job creation.
Considering the high cost of borrowing, gov't can look at the long term developmental needs of the country by ensuring there is balance in the way people are taxed in this country to ensure we have enough to meet current funding needs as well as giving the means to entrepreneurs to develop and expand their business. By forfeiting some taxes today, tomorrow you can expand the tax base by increasing the number of employees you can tax. The companies will also be making bigger profits, thus paying more tax in absolute terms.
Profits and distributable profits are two different things. The distributable profit is the actual profit an organization can pay as dividends to shareholders. If the gov’t gives tax concessions to strategic enterprises such as universities, it can pass laws that reduces their distributable profits by the amount of the tax concession.

Also, by building a big house I have made it possible for the mason, painter, carpenter etc to be employed so why punish me for helping to reduce the unemployment rate?

Lastly, I don’t mind paying fair taxes so far as some of the money is used to build our roads, provide constant water, electricity and better drainage system.

At the end of it all, why should I pay taxes if that money is going to be used to pay judgment debts and Woyme? Sorry can’t do!!

NDC is now a Tax & Spend Government. Ghana deserves what they get.

The fraudulent money given to Woyome alone is more than all the property taxes that can be accrued from East Legon. This is an evil government ably supported by evil people to dupe the country. No nation has ever prosper when war is waged on the rich. They provide jobs for the masses, not the government. Remember, capital "flows to areas of least resistance". When the government and the rich people fight, it is the ordinary Ghanaian that suffers. At the end of the day, the labourer needs the money from the job provided by "East Legoners" to feed his/her family. The government can generate enough money when a fair and ACCOUNTABLE system of tax collection is introduced, rather than targeting and robbing the rich hardworking people to pay the poor, thereby cutting of the hand that feeds them.

A house is a property and putting up a residential house is either through hard work or corruption. Entrepreneurs, hard-working ordinary Ghanaians and traders do this through hard work whereas most politicians achieve this through corruption. It is against this background, that people find all means to be in politics to accrue wealth within a short period of time – as it is based on the concept that – this is our time and we need to corruptly maximise our wealth. Unfortunately when you visit a location with good houses you can’t distinguish between the properties achieved through hard work and corruption. The hard working Ghanaian pays his/her taxes it is the politician who exempts him/herself from taxes – as he is untouchable.
The flow of comments shows we are naïve – Ghana has a property tax on houses and if you own a house and you’re not paying a property tax – it implies the house is not registered with the local authorities and thus not well documented with the Lands Commissions and relevant state institutions. Also the notion that having a good house of residential stature implies you’re rich is an indication of the low degree of thinking. As I own a respectable house through my hard to lay my head in my old age…I have siblings and relatives who invested their wealth in cars and good so called good life. At the end of the day raising taxes on properties is needed but it usually doesn’t affect the politicians who are supposed to set a good example.

Travel through the nearby Nima-Mamobi to Roman Rich, Airport Residential and the East Legon area and one will see the wisdom in the elderly statesman, Sam Okudzeto.

Definitely there is a call blowing in the win for a spontaneous people's revolution in the country right now and I won't be surprise if we wake up tomorrow and there is a military take over, pathetically.

How does any caring government put more unbearable social economic pressure on the ordinary suffering masses who find it difficult to pay for ordinary SHS school fees for their kids with unnecessary and unbearable taxation when they themselves have stolen to share the national covers?

I am of the view that the Presbyterian Churches are bigger than all the houses in East Legon, yet the Presbyterian Church does not pay property rate.
Mr. Sam Okudzeto (Ekudzeto) has erected a tower and he must be the first to make the first step up. Mr. Okudzeto should pay property rate on all the Presbyterian Chapels and Universities and others will follow because he is a senior man in that church.
I wrote on this forum that Prof. Andrei Sakharov owe a number of 15 story redbrick buildings with members of his cooperative. How much tax are members of NPP including Kufuor paying on state properties that they looted? To a person like I who traveled those houses in East Legon look like chicken coop to be envied.

They are in business; if they are not making money why is everyone venturing into that business? Within a period of 15 years as many as 65 universities have sprung up. They should be made to pay tax period!

It is part of the underground economy, no revenues reported/declared anywhere therefore no taxes. (This underground economy in Ghana is most likely bigger than the taxed economy).Only mansions spring up. If you check on these people who put up these mansions, many of them will not be able to show any gainful employment. And most of these people will also be NDC goons.YOu see it is what J.J. Rawlings created. A cadre of selfish and greedy money grabbing agents who have no interest in the progress of the nation but thier own. So where is that probity and accountability. Rawlings violently took the country for almost 30 yrs and that is what he created, thieves/muggers/murderers/propagandist/bandits/vice/ and now the whole country is paying for it. Put a 30 to 50 percent tax on it... It may stop a few people from drinking and smoking. Alcohol and tobacco are taxed heavily all over the world!

I am not against taxation but putting it in a way that those property owners in that part of Accra are rich and to be over taxed is insensitive. There is a waste in the Mahama Administration. He needs to get rid of many of his duplicate and triplicate deputy ministers who are doing the same job and drawing salaries and allowances from the tax payer. If Mahama is serious in cutting government's expenditure, there should be furlough of all Government workers across the country in every month. What I am trying to put across is government workers should take at least 4 days off in every month without pay which in effect will make an inpact to the economy. This sound to be a bitter pill to swallow by workers but when it becomes necessary to swerve your car to hit a wall than to somersault, you need to do so. Tax payers money are to be put into good use for them to benefit from than to pay government worker's salaries and allowances.

Some concern citizens were against Afari Djan coming with the 45 new parliamentarians during last election who are doing practically nothing but drawing salaries and allowances at the expense of the tax payer. The Finance Minister - Mr. Terkper is saying the country is not broke then why all these talks about taxation? Killing us softly.

The comment on taxing residents of East Legon stinks. A man of such a high caliber demonstrates lack of understanding. Most people in East Legon are pensioners from the diaspora who through sweat and blood manage to put up comfortable retirement homes. Where does he live? Ghanaians with minimum salary who have errected mansions must be questioned and investgated first including men like him. There is no fareness in his statement.
