I AM ASHAMED OF THE RESPECT OTHER NATIONALS GIVE GHANAIANS. UPON ALL THE LEVEL OF ACHIEVEMEMENTS, THE GHANAIAN IS AN ENIGMA. Oh! You are talking about travelling leaders. How about those of us who lived and schooled in those countries and have managed to work our way into positions in either government or high corporate positions. Most lived on the periphery of life in those countries. Their friends were mostly from the developing world, Nigerians, Zimbabweans, Kenyans, Ugandans, Jamaicans etc, who virtually had nothing to show them.They lived and worked amongst these same people. So, are you surprised? How can you travel for a few days and understand how something that took years to conceive and execute. It takes more than just a few days of travel to think of implementing what you see.

You are right. Getting a PhD, MA, or MSc abroad and going back to Ghana does not make you a better manager...they lack the hands on experience in risk taking and management. They rush home without any experience whatsoever of how to run affairs in their areas of expertise. Why? Because there are perks, cars, and a big ego awaiting them in Ghana.

Just read or listen to some of the statements coming from the GSE and SEC on improving liquidity on the stock exchange. Listen to statements coming from Ato Forson, Fiifi Kwettey, and some ministers and you realize that we are being guided by morons. Yes, they do possess those respective titles/degrees, but they don't get it.

How many MDs in Ghana (beside foreign companies) can talk about where they want their entities to be in 5 or 10 years? They only look forward to the day they will be replaced so they can assume ownership of their bungalows and the cars. How sad it is! For example, what we are seeing at the Electricity Corp. of Ghana is one massive under investment (probably no investment at all) even though funds were allocated for capital expenditure, be it maintenance or new.

Do we have to reinvent the wheel in Ghana so our people can enjoy life? Not most of the time or not at all!! Do we need a new national capital, or airport, etc., when our children study in dilapidated classrooms and the sick are dying in our hospitals? Imagine the number of jobs that would be created if we decided construct a bullet train from Accra to the north and across the country. Just imagine the jobs that would be created and relief to traffic jams if the government decided to build a subway system in Accra! These are some of the things our PhDs, etc., can think about.

I ARRANGED WITH THE HOSPITAL (IN EUROPE)& WAS GIVEN THE INJECTION TO TAKE TO GHANA. THE INJECTION HAD TO BE ADMINISTERED ON THE 18TH OF JULY BUT NOT LATER THAN 24TH. I WENT TO A TOP PRIVATE CLINIC IN ACCRA & MET GHANA'S LEADING SPECIALIST IN THE FIELD. HE NOR HIS NURSES COULD NOTR ADMINISTER THE INJECTION!!! I HAD TO CUT SHORT MY VISIT. Innovation, as the name suggests, involves "newness", sometimes quite radically. Often, rules have to be broken, and one almost has to be a rebel in thought. But almost always, it involves coming up with something different from everything else.

A good example is the cellphone which is now ubiquitous. Ninety-nine percent only use it to make phone calls, although those with the smartphone variety might also browse the web or run apps.

But a few innovative engineers have created new uses for the cellphone. Any device can now have a SIM card. And with a bit of electronics, one can communicate with that device via the cellphone.

Farmers elsewhere are able to text probes in the soil. The probes text back, providing the farmer with the moisture content of the soil.

There are tiny devices for cars, for example iTrack, that are able to receive phone calls. When a call arrives, they quickly hangup, then text back with the GPS position of the car. (Thieves and wife-cheaters already hate iTrack!).

So, innovation doesn't even require a new invention; just a NEW way of using an existing invention.

In fact, the Patent Offices of the world are able to issue what is known as "Use Patents", for innovative use of existing inventions. The LED (Light Emitting Diode) has been invented for generating light. But say you find a way to repel mosquitoes with an LED of a particular color. That becomes innovation and qualifies for a Use Patent.

To be innovative, one has to avoid being always conventional. All table-tops have three basic shapes: square, rectangular, or circular. Innovation is coming out with a table with a TRIANGULAR top, for example.

However innovation needs to be USEFUL to mankind. Instead of creating a TV set that can be switched on by hand-clapping, one could instead design a hospital ward alarm device by which a patient in say, the middle of a heart attack, can trigger the alarm by clapping the hand.
