He has persistently put himself out as the village idiot and members of his own party have not been spared by his caustic language. The NPP is not a party that is afraid of cutting a troubling hand off. They should ensure that the full force of the law is handed to the ROYAL ASS. I guess the SC must be over exaggerating its awesome powers, for the probability exists that how they handle the contempt case might provide the illusive spark and trigger that could push the country into uncontrollable sectorial violence.

I would say forget about who said what about whom and focus on the substantive case that has held the country spellbound for 8 months now and counting. Seriously, how does what somebody says outside court impede on their ability to deliver justice?

In Ghana today everybody can be criticized from the president down to the grave digger, and nothing should or could happen to the critic thanks to the removal of the criminal libel law from our books. I think it is about time the same is applied to the judges; the contempt of court law should be rendered invalid and removed from our books, so that judges do not use that to be prosecutors and judges in their own case. What is happening right now is it makes and places them above the law while everybody else lives below the law.

Secondly the idea that one must not enforce the law because hooligans may respond is the reason why we have the police and army out to handle law breakers.
Don't misunderstand me, but I think helping to enforce a strong law in opposition is a sure way handling corruption when in power. The first party to start enforcing the law on their own members will win the higher ground for years to come.

Those who are asking for clemency must have mercy on the poor Ghanaians who are likely to bear the brunt of the dangerous stupidity of these adult delinquents!

We can ask for mercy if the offence had been committed by some person other than a lawyer who doubles as the General Secretary of Ghana's leading Opposition party!

Any show of leniency at this point by the Supreme Court can be interpreted as a sign of weakness. We cannot afford that at this time! Jail the guy well! The harsher the punishment, the better!

Owusu Afriyie and Adroyeh are 'serial agitators' who have fomented trouble right from the start and were spearheads for some of the early violence that we saw at the end of the elections.

They have also shown repeatedly that they have no respect for the law and in the case of Afriyie, as a member of the legal profession, it is particularly disturbing that he can flout the law so blatantly and defy judges of the supreme court of a profession that he belongs to. Neither of these two can feign ignorance of the law, nor can they ask to be excused for 'excessive reactions to provocation'.

I am afraid they knew exactly what they were doing, what the purpose was and what their end point was. Furthermore the judges have got to show consistency in their rulings, and to make sure that nobody is in any doubt about the determination of the law to come down hard on anyone who seeks to incite violence of any kind based on false propaganda.

Is Afriyie's recent utterances in the US on his short trip are anything to go by, the guy has simply not repented and he seems to have spent time falsely whipping up sentiments among his NPP backers in the US who I am sure contributed monies to their campaign. It is wholly inappropriate and it would be wrong in my view if the justices do not apply the same measure of the law as they did the previous two recalcitrant and lawless individuals - Atubiga and Kuranchie who spent time in custody.

For those who argue that the justices are being harsh, let me remind all that it is a common thing for lawyers in contempt or other people in contempt of court to be put behind bars for at least several days. I am surprised that people would be arguing about 'legality of the actions of the judges which is in fact within their rights.

It is also most appalling to read here that the media led by Joy FM are propagating this so-called appeal "for mercy"!! for these two whose actions are in danger of plunging the whole country into something more serious including the potential loss of lives.

What Joy FM should be doing is sending out the message about how wrong these two's actions have been, and actively discouraging others from doing the same or propagating falsehoods about the judicial process going on. Joy FM should be a vanguard for upholding our laws, for peace and for ensuring that there is discipline and a sense of responsibility on the part of all, and especially party leaders and functionaries who can mobilise and influence their supporters for the wrong reasons.

I take a very deem view of this present campaign for leniency from Joy FM and wholly condemn it.

But we do not live in the Atakama Desert as I friend would say - in Africa we live with malaria and fungus - that our lives are a bit more complex than consistencies and absolutes. So my question to you is, don't you think NDC and the current administration have encouraged this lack of respect for our judicial branch? First the NDC government and Nii Lantey Vanderpouiye have defied high court rulings regarding Obestebe Lamaptey's bungalow. Second the NDC propaganda machine did attack the SC and its Chairman even suggested that if the CJ does not resign they will find some means to skin the cat. Third the attorney general's office is so politicized and made incompetent that they will not even show up in court to prosecute cases of national importance ( eg. Wayome)

These appeal for mercy or leniency has become the nature of the current elite and political class who are unwilling to deal with important governance issues. They will rather kick the Can (problem) into a deep hole not to be seen for a long time hoping it will go away or kick forward for someone to handle rather than resolving as they have been authorized. "Go to court, go to court" admonition by the EC and the lack of guts by the government to publish reports or prosecute corruption by public officials ( PV Obeng and GYEEDA) are examples.

Paul, after these two pathetic individuals are dealt with then what? In the larger context what the SC is trying to deal is rather symptoms of a country heading towards a failed State or anarchy where rule of law and liberties will be suspended for stability. Ghana has now become a religious bazaar where the political and elite classes invoke God and prayers to solve problems.
No amount of prayers will bring PEACE if our governance systems are not perceived as being fair, civil, predictable and sustainable.

If you want us to debate other matters unrelated to this present topic, I am quite happy to discuss, but I rather think it is odd that you should seek to raise these issues with me under this topic of the Supreme Court summons.

Any how, in brief response to your points. First, even though I am not privy to the deal involving Obetsebi-Lamptey and his "bungalow", I find it odd that politicians (of all parties) would be allowed to buy state property in the way that has been happening over the years. I am totally opposed to that. However if Obetsebi-Lamptey is the beneficiary of such a skewed class system that gives people in political positions such an unfair advantage over ownership of state property, then let the letter of the law apply, and let him get what is his due.

In saying that, can I just remind you that the matter has nothing to do with the president and the NDC, and that it is a matter between the court and Government of Ghana and Vanderpuye who happens to be the present occupier of the said building? And why should I be drawn into that matter? I simply don't see why I should be expected to have an opinion on every matter, but these are my honest opinions on that matter.

2. You talk about Attorney-General's department and their incompetence and lack of show in court cases. I am fundamentally for leadership at all levels of government and ministries and have made my philosophy on these points clear in my opinions throughout.

If any government ministry or its functionaries are incompetent or are not doing their job properly, it is up to government to deal with them including replacing them through e.g. a reshuffle or sacking them where that is the best cause of action. As I am sure you are aware, the Woyome case is a long drawn out case and a complex one, the details of which I am not entirely familiar.

I do not know where the truth lies. My primary interest there relates to any actions, omissions or commissions that would have led to State losing monies. If that is the case, all those found to have failed the state should be punished accordingly.

As to who should or would deal with that, clearly these are still on-going cases in court which are yet to be concluded. In my view they have taken too long, but that is just the way the legal system is, and by the way I have heard a lot of backlash from some of those court cases for which I have reserved comment (for the reasons I mentioned above).

For example some Isofoton executives have threatened to expose certain individuals in respect of those contracts, but we do not know the whole facts of the case and unless people will go to court and under oath "spill the beans", we do not know for sure where the head or tail is, and as a matter of principle, I am careful in my analysis and judgment on issues such as these, and would rather not make a fool of myself.

3. You refer to the GYEEDA report which we are yet to see, but from which 'excerpts' seem to have been leaked to the media.

I do not know what exactly is in the report but have given my comments on this issue in the past in which I stated categorically that irrespective of persons, all those found culpable must be dealt with by the hand of the law. I also supported Otchere-Darko's call yesterday that PV Obeng should not chair the review committee on the report because he is said to be a board chairman of one of the companies cited in the report. I made very clear statements in that respect and simply don't see your point here.

Please go back to ghanaweb of Saturday 10th August and read comments under Otchere-Darko's article on the subject. I reiterate my overall position on matters relating to GYEEDA that I am of the opinion that all apsects of the operations of that particular project must be looked at and all those responsible for its functioning must be held to account.

I would like to see proper accountability at all levels and among all people - both in public and private sectors. We need discipline in our system and among our people, irrespective of who they are. All those who are found to have failed the system must be held to account.

4. To come to your last point, these two recalcitrant (not pathetic) individuals, if found guilty as charged, and if following their appearance are found to have violated the laws of contempt, they should be punished appropriately. Then what? I'll tell you. The supreme court and the law should make it very clear what they expect of citizens and party faithfuls following their rulings. They must lay down a marker about what should happen if people should decide to take the law into their own hands following the verdict, and to go causing chaos in the country.

As to the debate that would follow the SC ruling, people are free to voice their opinions and to make their arguments, but these should be based on the facts of the case, and examining the validity of the evidence provided. I would argue against, and challenge those who would seek to use propaganda even after the fact, in order to get their supporters whipped up to want to cause chaos and instability in the country.

I would state categorically that i would expect the security forces to come down very hard on anyone who seeks to misbehave or to cause lawlessness in the country.

I rather hope that by dealing with these idiots posing as party leaders and functionaries, the SC would send a message to remind us all that the rule of law is not only alive in Ghana, but holds supreme and that we are all expected to tow the line and obey the law. Whether you like it or not, that is how it is supposed to be and I stand with, not against the law of the land.

We are on the same page on the accountability and probity of our elected leaders and political representatives. I have followed your postings an seen you to be open minded. What I have noticed on this web is what I may describe as "Single stories" that ignore usually the bigger picture. My objective was to draw you away from the single story of a Supreme Court Summons of some party functionaries whose behavior is symptomatic of a culture of defiance and disrespect of our Judiciary in Ghana perpetuated by the political class. In the case under discussion we are happy to let the SC carry the bucket for us to be the Prosecutor, Jury and Judge. And we are very happy about that but we have no respect for their role and decisions. In societies where the rule of law is accepted and operates to citizen's satisfaction and acceptance SC decisions are final. There is usually no need to seek divine grace to bestow peace.

You did make light of the issue of Obetsebi-Lamptey's bungalow case and said it is a matter between the Government of Ghana and Vanderpuiye and not the President and NDC. The President took an oath to uphold the constitution and administer the laws of the land. The Courts on two occasions has ruled in favor of Mr. Obetsebi=Lamptey and yet the court orders have not ben executed. The occupant is an important NDC operative. I think we both agree the President is the head of the Government of Ghana? So why will he send the security agencies to put down riots and wont use them to enforce court rulings? The NDC is the party that put him in power so the President and his Party cannot be separated.

We are on the same page of the skewed class system that allow our politicians and their cronies acquire government properties for less than market value and get way with it. That is an environment where the law does not apply to all so how do you expect citizens to respond to such environment? So after we throw the idiots in jail what we do we do next to change the environment? We cannot leave the mob control to the SC and the Security agencies. Out three branches of governance , the executive (lead and execute laws), Parliament (law makers) and the Judiciary (interpreters of our laws) must create an environment where citizen will have confidence in these institutions.

Paul if only the Judiciary are left to send the message that the rule of law is alive in Ghana and Parliament and Executive have shown no accountability or the respect of rule of law and or writing laws to reinforce the rule of law then there will be no Peace expectation longer term.

I do not think we should waste our time to debate the outcome of the verdict. In 40 months the issue will not matter. Our focus must center on how we go about solving the endemic and systemic culture of acceptance of corruption by our political and public officials and to establish processes and laws that does not favor any class of Ghanaians to violate the laws of the land with impunity and get away with.

I am not worried about the aftermath of the SC decision this month.

Odasani, I agree with you broadly on most of your points and like you, wish to see accountability, weeding out corruption in all sectors within our system and having a meritocratic system in which all, regardless will have a 'fighting chance' of succeeding without recourse to party, affiliations and the like.

Of all that you have listed as ills we need to address from parliament to civil society, yes, we need to work on the "environment" which fosters such acts, but I am sure you also agree it will take time, a lot of effort and persistence on our part to push home the message and seek the "change that we can all believe in".

The judges need to be consistent, hence Afriyie and Adorye must also serve prison sentences. The contemnors' utterances were as damaging and potentially explosive as those made by Kuranchie and Atubiga, therefore I do not sympathize with these two idiots. They need to spend time in jail to become "NPP Heros" as they foolishly call themselves in NPP. These two fools deserve even longer time in jail than the first two culprits.
