Whereas I do not endorse the name calling of Atuguba by no less a person than the general secretary of the largest opposition party, it is also equally appalling that Atuguba only seems to hear what the NPP says on radio stations and not that of the NDC.

The irksome thing is his knack of presaging his statements with comments like: I do not know this person called Sir John, I hear he comes to court....blablabla. Really, you don't know, you hear what? Then the question is why bother since you live in a cocoon? Then again, who has been sifting through news items and feeding him with what comes to him? Could it be the BNI, or other government apparatuses? Could the source which has been selecting actionable intelligence and news items for him to act on be blinded by their own political biases?

Atuguba cannot pretend he does not know who Sir John is. That is a lie and shows he is very condescending. Sir John's pronouncements when read in its entirety, against the political atmosphere, in and outside court, tinged with some distasteful jokes, were meant to encourage Atuguba to build some backbones and shed his not so-veiled adoration of Tsatsu Tsikata and allowing him to have his way over him in court. Again Atuguba comes across as deaf to the president's interjections. I am very sure if Akufo Addo had made the same comments Atuguba will have flagged him long time ago.

I have seen that picture before. Living with my step-mother many years back, I could see that any slides on my part attracted heavy condemnations and reprimands, whereas those of my half-brothers and sisters hardly attracted even a stern look. That is how the NPP feels about Atuguba's bench. Be bold Atuguba and wield the double edged-sword of justice evenly and equally. Don't be a chicken around the president and Tsatsu Tsikata, and expect the rest of us to be fearful of you. Are you kidding us? Anokwampo!

Let's call a spade a spade and agree that Sir John did not behave wisely in his criticism of the SC, for when I consider that:

1. he is a lawyer who knows what contempt of court means
2. he is a leader of the NPP, whose leadership has sought peaceful resolution to their grievance at the SC and
3. The SC had shown its readiness to bite hard any one who infringes on its rights, since the experiences of Sammy Awuku and Ken Korankye,
I cannot see why he should behave the way he did.

I see the SC having been very lenient with him and Adorye. They should thank God for escaping custodial sentences.

However, Justice Dotsei, who did not take kindly to his pleas, noted that, “One thing we must all realize, especially those who aspire to leadership position is that if you want your voice to be heard on the airwaves, there are a lot of issues you can talk about”.

He further made reference to an article which was published in the July 29, 2013 edition of the Daily Graphic of a woman who bled to death after she was delivered of her baby due to the lack of a hospital facility in Torgome, a town in the Volta Region.

He noted that “our leaders on both sides, government and opposition must address such issues. If you want people in your village to hear your voice, talk about such issues; how do we fend for the people of Torgome to ensure that at 11pm when somebody is bitten by a snake and he has to be taken to hospital, he is not locked out of hospital?”

“These are issues we should address and not useless issues like this. So if your client wants his voice to be heard, he should be talking of more productive issues,” he counseled.

When his name was called, late in the afternoon, he stood before the judge, only to hear that court would be adjourned for the rest of the afternoon and he would have to return the next day.
?What for?? he snapped at the judge.
His honor, equally irked by a tedious day and sharp query, roared, ?Twenty dollars contempt of court. That?s why!?
Then, noticing the man checking his wallet, the judge relented. ?That?s all right. You don?t have to pay now.?

In as much as the Judiciary has the power to interpret and enforce the laws of the land;an explicit definition of the "Law of Contempt of Court" should be unambiguously clarified therein with its associated penalties so as to save the Men of the Bench the temptation to muzzle constructive criticism and the inalienable right to free speech enshrined in any meaningful democracy.Lucidly observing proceedings today and the concomitant emotional outburst of Justice Atuguba I am tempted to believe he has some personal scores to settle with Sir John.Justice Atuguba's emotional chastisement of the man was disproportionate,cynical ,uncalled for and out of tune with a man holding the august position as a Justice of the Supreme Court.Justice Atuguba verbal onslaught was at best disingenuous;is he not privy to the slurs of the Ndc spin doctors?
