As reported by the Globe and Mail, that seems to be a growing consensus among Russians whose government recently imposed anti-gay laws.
Lawyer Rob Hughes, who is representing two gay Russian men claiming refugee status in Canada, says he expects more Russians to make claims based on sexual orientation.
Mr. Hughes, who focuses on sexual orientation and gender-based claims, says his two clients told him numerous people in Russia have expressed interest about seeking asylum in Canada.
The Globe quotes newly minted Immigration Minister Chris Alexander who says that these types of asylum cases "will of course be looked at very seriously by our very generous system."
In an email exchange with Yahoo! Canada News, Alexander's press secretary reiterated the minister's comments but clarified that decisions made by the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) are made without government interference.
"Canada has a fair and generous immigration system," Alexis Pavlich said.
"Refugee claims are heard by the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB).
"The IRB is a quasi-judicial, independent body, which provides a fair hearing to asylum claimants. Decisions are made based on the merits of the specific facts presented in an individual case, and in accordance with Canada’s immigration laws."

Canada has, however, been proactive in the recent past in resettling gay refugees from transitional camps abroad.
Last year the Associated Press reported that Canada relocated approximately 100 homosexual Iranians from a refugee camp in Turkey.
"Canada has indicated to the United Nations that we are ready to accept anyone, if they're a gay Iranian refugee," former immigration minister Jason Kenney told AP referencing asylum claimants in Turkey who felt threatened because of their sexual orientation.
Saghi Ghahraman of the Iranian Queer Organization told AP that Canada is a favoured destination.
"They prefer Canada over other countries, when they leave Iran, and they have very good reasons for this," she said.
"[It's a] friendly and supportive society, and with great social services which are utterly crucial for most gay, lesbian, and transsexual Iranians who need all the support when they arrive in a new country."

There was a time that the left accused the Harper Conservatives of being anti-gay: They're against 'gay marriage' and 'they don't attend pride parades' was the common refrain from supporters of the opposition parties.

Castle Boy,think B4 U talk.Or rather think before you write.Atuguba has no power over us,that is so.Not him personally, of course.But even then the SC has no power over us.What it is is that society expects one to exhibit common sense and maturity when it comes to matters of the laws governing our society,laws designed to ensure order and mutual respect for one another ,fairness and justice,etc.,etc.I rather like what Kofi Jumah said, that the temptation to make comments is sometimes very strong,but then he is guided by CAUTION(underlined)not to sound contemptous.Ghanaians are not cowards,far from it.On the other hand we generally are careful what we say on public platforms.Those stupid politicians who have strayed from that path are the ones who are now being embarassed even as their recklessness is checked by the assertion of the rule of law.Can you imagine what those reckless and unbridled foolish utterances by the likes of Sir John could have led to?

One time after they had both just gotten ice-cream, Trouble's ice-cream fell. Trouble then stole Shut-up's ice-cream and ran away. Shut-up ran after Trouble but eventually lost him, sat on a curb, and started to cry.

What a trash!!!. I am really astonished by these feeble comments made by people like Maxwell Kofi Jumah. So don't these guys know that to be in the realm of decision making requires example qualities like, humility, intelligence, exhibition of self-discipline and confidence, law abiding, irresponsible behaviour, honesty, trust, patience, maturity, ability to listen coherently, restraint and good communication skills?. How and upon what criteria are all these people measured or selected to lead or be part of the leadership at the various levels in our society?. A good person and for that matter, a good leader always aims at persuading people around and towards him/her by using all the skills that would enhance togetherness to fight an agenda for the benefit but not for the detriment of a society. Even when an opponent makes derogatory, abusive./insulting comments and fabricated stories a good person gathers restraint pulls self together and use mature mind to correct and advise the opponent. By doing this maturity, by applying intelligence and self discipline to knock the opponent out for 'six'. It is not the abusive, insulting fabricated and innuendos against the opponent that renders his/her actions impotent and ineffective. Unfortunately, there seem to be a culture of hatred, violent and irresponsible attacking mode by our politicians, journalist, media houses and some individuals in the Ghanaian communities who for some false and unintelligent views believe that empty loud noises, abuse and irresponsible utterances are the easier ways of solving problems. They find these ways easier because they either don't have or limited in their intelligence or have self-discipline to exhibit maturity. I am really surprised at Kofi Juma. And please Mr Juma you should be grateful to God because he has given every human beings the average intelligence to know right and wrong. It is up to you and I how to apply them to the glory of the Lord.

Otherwise, always check your piece before posting. By the way are truly Koku Ametape?. Sorry, again the name should be either Korku Ametepe(boy) or Kokui Ametepe(girl). Some people add 'y' to the Ametepe to read 'Ametepey'. So my good friend remove the 'a' after the 't' from the surname and replace it with 'e' this is the correct spelling. Korku for the Ewes is same as Kweku for the Akans. This forum is also a place for learning. Some call it 'free education' forum.

Example was given about their chairman because once upon a time all these NDC NPP men and women have been and are still friends. It is only the bugabuga followers who cause trouble. However the ignorance and attitude of our power-drunk judges should be addressed. This Atuguba is a disgrace to democracy and the rule of law. He does not have the temprament to be a judge nor is he knowledgable enough for the shoe he is wearing. He is obviously a bully but he needs to read more listen and only talk when what he has to say is relevant to the case. His jokes are out of place and in fact he is a failure. People will just look at him and say poor Ghana your standards are low.
