  Danquah's declaration of "self emancipation" at the time he did that can never be interpreted as declaration of "independence" by any intellectual who is honest. Independence can only be declared at the point that it is ready to be obtained and it is only people who fought for it to the point that it is ready to be obtained that can declare it. Danquah's role in the history of independence was clearly self-aggrandizement. His motive was selfish- he was best known for chasing and fucking Osu women than any known serious commitment for independence struggle and that was why he fell off long before the achievement of independence. In any case was he the only one who talked about self emancipation at the time? Nkrumah even though not at home at the time was far more positively involved in activities of emancipation (and was far more recognized even at that time than Danquah) than Danquah. Benevolence, pardon, righteousness, wisdom, tolerance, coexistence, and freedom are all good, but not applicable when Danquah/Busias are not willing or do not want to consider these virtues.

  The unfortunate thing this Asante/Akyema has failed to do is to tell us his/her name. The Asante/Akyem has failed to tell us where an Asante/Akyem is different from Pepeni. The Arabs from the north have taken over North Africa, they bear their names and inter marry because of religion, they have nothing to do with the rest of Africa, they even look down upon us, can you imagine. The Blacks in the diaspora have lost their culture, they have finally come to accept their slave names such as "John'slave, Peter's slave" etc now changed to Johnson, Peterson, etc. Many of the Blacks in Africa {south of the Sahara} are also ashamed of their own culture, they are no different from the Blacks in the diaspora.   This argument reminds me of the long-standing debate of someone who dreams of an idea and one who develops it into a concrete reality.
  
  Many of us have been imagining many wonderful, innovative ideas but have never come around developing them. Then, we wake up the next day see our idea has been used to build something and received a patent to protect it.
  
  The idea of levitation has long existed in the minds of many folks. But it took centuries for someone to come up with the Train that uses that principle in Physics in today's World. So, who should we praise for and award for the current manifestation of the idea?
  
  I would suggest that we stay truthful to our History and accord all our past leaders their due, without putting anyone down or taking credit from another to give to the other. We should remember that similar ideas could be simultaneously born by people who have never physically met or communicated. History of Science would have lots of such to show us.

  Yet Jesus was not the founder of Christianity as we know it today, even though it bears his name. Most of the New Testament doesn't even concern the historical Jesus while the main influence is the Apostle Paul and a Greek convert named John.
  
  Paul never met Jesus in the flesh, he only claimed some strange vision and proceeded to paganize the teachings of Jesus (who preached an enlightened form of Judaism), until he created Pauline Christianity. Because there are no known writings from Jesus, the actual Apostles, or anyone that actually knew Him in the flesh (other then perhaps James), most of what He taught is lost forever.
  
  The beginning of Christianity stands two figures: Jesus and Paul. Jesus is regarded by Christians as the founder of their religion, in that the events of his life comprise the foundation story of Christianity; but Paul is regarded as the great interpreter of Jesus' mission, who explained, in a way that Jesus himself never did, how Jesus' life and death fitted into a cosmic scheme of salvation, stretching from the creation of Adam to the end of time. The doctrines of Christianity come mostly from the teaching or influence of Paul, a Pharisee. Paul is infact the founder, therefore Mr Oquaye stop confusing us.

  I am surprise how the learned man fails to understand this simple logic that Gold Coast became GHANA on March 6, 1957, and if any particular person should be singled out for that singular feat, it was Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. No one doubts the role Danquah and others may have played but what Prof needs to understand is that but for Dr. Nkrumah and his CPP comrades independence day would have been any other day than March 6, 1957.

  Danquah began his movement, United Party. He was too slow, wanted to be known but had no knowledge of how to achieve it. They brought Nkrumah, the Show Boy, and he did it against all odds.
  
  Nkrumah named our nation Ghana and began to lead the nation. If you hate Nkrumah, you can do so all right. But when it comes to the founding of Ghana, No one, including J.B. Danquah and his functionaries can take that credit away from him. Nkrumah founded Ghana.
  
  The keys of Gold Coast were handed over to Nkrumah and not Danquah. Go and ask the Queen of England and she will confirm it.
  
  Oquaye should go back to school and learn his history well before he makes false claims.

Nkrumah himself would not have denied these. Nkrumah, came in at the very tail end of the story, after a greater part of the battle had been fought by people like Paa Grant, J B Danquah, the Gold Coast elites, and some of our Chiefs.

  The levels of illogic displayed by Prof. Mike Ocquaye can at best be described as pathetic and especially for one of his caliber and status, this is unacceptable. Why, it seems that some elements of the UP will not ever find sleep until they have obliterated Kwame Nkrumah's name from the history of Ghana and at the least opportunity they go at it. We remember how Prof. Adu Boahene wrote his History book on West Africa and left Nkrumah's name out of it. Why can't the so called intellectuals of this country drop their obsession with partisanship and allow us to arrive at National consensus on some of this issues. Why does every body just tell his own version of history, events that occurred? How could a professor of Political science and Law stoop so low? Is saying “We have come from all the corners of this country… (to decide) how we are to be governed, a new kind of freedom, a Gold Coast liberty. We left our homes in Ghana and came down here to build for ourselves a new home: There is one thing we brought with us from ancient Ghana (870 years ago). We brought with us our ancient freedom. Today the safety of that freedom is threatened; has been continuously threatened for 100 years; since the Bond of 1844 and the time has come for a decision” be interpreted to be a declaration of independence? We all know and cannot be deceived to forget that the clear urge of the UGCC was for some respect from the Colonialists for the intelligentsia, Proffessionals and chiefs of the Gold Coast and this was what Danquah clearly maintained until Nkrumah came and changed the objectives for the attainment of independence and for which he was threatened with dismissal from the UGCC and he resigned, at Saltpond to form the CPP. In 1948, after the disturbances over 120 students and four Tutors who participated in the demonstrations were dismissed at the instance of Lawyer Coussey's Commission. Nkrumah brought them together to establish a college that he personally named Ghana National College. Danquah and the remnants of the UGCC played no role in it. Indeed Danquah was opposed to this declaring that the students must be allowed to suffer the consequences of their action. If Nkrumah did nothing at all in the early days of the struggle and in fact was not even around, as Prof Ocquaye contends, why would he take a name already chosen by those who had become antagonist to him at this time. I am sure that if the name Ghana had been the brainchild of Danquah, he would immediately have sued Nkrumah for copyright infringement. Has Prof Oquaye forgotten that Danquah and his team declared that we were not ready for independence even as at 6th March, 1957? Who said, 'independence in the shortest possible time'? Were these people who were declaring independence in 1947? Is it not this same Danquah who introducing Nkruamh said openly that if they had been disappointed, Nkrumah would not disappoint them? Disappointed for what?
  
  There is no need for this obdurate and passionate effusions on our history. People like Prof Mike Ocquaye must teach the facts. he has the right to compose his opinions of the facts but to go on to actually distort the facts of history is not right, especially for the young ones.

What this disgruntled clod deleteriously, can undo is that, there was no Ghana till one was borne to the world, as "free and independent for ever" on 6th of March 1957. Whether he likes it or not.
  
  Dankwa could have been present, but the voice we heard wasn't his. It was not simply the change of name or who had the copyrights, or who knitted the flag but the one who took us to the finish line, young, brave, and messianic, whether by dusty roads or barefooted who became the founder. After all Okomfo Anokye too arrived in loin cloth, it could have been tampons!

  It is true that there were founders and Dankwah was the leading founder but where was the knowledge of power for them to achieve their goal and how did Nkromah portrayed, so therefore isn't remains to be questionable to prof. Ocquaye's clarifications so far as History is concerned? In fact, I found it so hard to understand politicians to find it so difficult to clarify 100% truth.
  
  To me, who ever came late or not is not the goal but how to earn it, Nkromah's inclusive has nourished Ghana today period and, in other words, this is not the time to spit out who started what. Rather, forward ever backwards never is what we need to accomplish. Thank you.

However, what I found it to be a patently disturbing lie told by such an octogenarian in his assertion that Nkrumah changed our Ghanaian flag. I bet he was addressing feebleminds like Karbo and Sammy Awuku, who are still suckling their mother's breast. I was born in 1958 and started school in 1964, two years before the CPP was overthrown by enemies of our destiny (Dankwa's followers) in collaboration with the CIA. I have never known any other flag apart from the flag we used to refer to as 'red, gold, green' with the Black star. Today, another apparatchik of the subversive NPP is doing his utmost best to re-write our history with lies. Nkrumah never replaced our national flag with the CPP flag. No wonder many of Prof's students who studied Political Science graduated without having read any of Nkrumah's books. These are books that are read in universities all over the World. I know that for a fact. No one worth his salt who has read Nkrumah's "Neocolonialism, the last stage of imperialism" will ever betray our nation, Ghana. After, that book was published,in 1965, a British diplomat in Ghana, advised his government to act swiftly because Nkrumah was enlightening the people to understand the machinations of the multinational companies. Who were the traitors, in today's parlance, they would be rightly called terrorists? It is a pity that today people, in Ghana, do not read and even if they do, it is mostly religious stuff.

  In fact, I will dispute this. The chief's signed Treatises of Alliances and not throw away their independence, that would have meant sacrilege to the gods of their lands.
  
  The fate of the Gold Coast was sealed thousands of miles away in Berlin on 1884(Scramble and partition of Africa) when the Europeans shared Africa among themselves and nothing to do with the treatises of alliances.

  The current NPP generation always portray Nkrumah as nothing but a back bencher for a reason. They wanted to dine with the devil for as long as they wanted, but Nkrumah had had enough and took Ghana out of the one way train robbery of our land (although it has not ended completely yet because we did not follow up what Nkrumah did)
  
  Yes, J. B. Duaquah suggested the name 'Ghana' which I doubt most NPP leaders today know, but Nkrumah being a very practical man and always wanted to take ideas from others adopted the name( this is opposite to what they said he was, a tyrant who did not listen)

  In fact, I could go further back in history and credit J. E. Casley Hayford for initiating our march on to independence. Casley- hayford along with J. W. Sey, J. P. Brown, J. E. Casely Hayford, John Mensah Sarbah Kobina Sakyi, J. E. Biney, Williem Essuman Pieterson, and Henry van Hein formed the Aborigines' Rights Protection Society (created in 1897) which created the whole idea of taking back Ghana's independence.
  
  J. B. was great, but not greater than the others and forerunners and indeed Ghana conned the term BIG SIX to purely give credit to all the others.

  Doctor Joseph Danquah, Professor Kofi Abrefa Busia, Dombo, R.R. Amponsah were all against our political and socioeconomic independence. In 1957 Busia went to Britain to tell the British Prime Minister and the Queen Elizabeth that we were not matured for independence Joseph Danquah was then the leader of the UGCC and we did not heard that he stopped Busia from drying such an absurdity in the whole world public view.
  The logic according to the New Patriotic Party (NPP)will be like this two women planned to cook banku. One started the fire and saw that she has not got the skills in cooking banku, thus she poured water in on the fire and not even leaving a spark. The other woman came and removed the wet firewood, fetch sand and poured it on the wet ash, started another fire and cooked the banku. The woman who put off the fire out of envy and frustration came to put her dirty hand in the banku. When she was asked why are you making the food unwholesome she cried laud, I initiated the idea of cooking the food. She initiated the idea of cooking the food thus has to make the food unwholesome. That is the proper thing that anyone should do according to the absurdity of NPP.
  That is what Danquah, Busia, Dombo and Akpalu did at independence and continue to do. Thus a how can a person who gave medicine to a women to abort a pregnancy claim that he or she is the godfather and godmother of the fetus that survived all that dangerous treat.
  Rightist parties define and interpret democracy in the manner of a group of blind people who have a live elephant in front of them to describe. The first person said that it is a snake, the second said it is a wall, the third said it is a tree, the forth said it is a tube, ect.
  A democratic party that takes pride in the ownership of the economy of his country by foreigners, preventing companies own by the state from buying more shares and rather supporting foreign companies who want to owe such shares. A democratic party which whenever it is in power dismiss people from a particular tribe from work, call on them to go to Togo and when they refuse to do so order people to use pestles to pound them and knives to stab them, with the whole party on the rampage on the streets, police station and the courts, that that hooligan behavior is unique to democracy. A party that believes that in a democracy you hack a grievance with an axe, rather than resolving it amicably.
  A political party which claims and carry the ruse of democracy, like a pillar of tears and gloat that if you are not a member of their party, then you should not even breath air, eat, own a house and business.
  The worse of kill and maim children because they are leaning patriotism and singing patriotic songs. A political party that claims to be democratic, yet subscribe to colonial subjugation in tranquility in opposition to socioeconomic independence with all the dangers it entails.
  So when will the NPP and its members stop from been clowns and giving us these laughing illusions and absurdities.
  As those who are claiming that there should be a government of national unity forgotten that Dr. Joseph Boache Danquah was appointed the head of Council for Scientific and Industrial Research by Kwame Nkrumah and he rejected that post and rather decided to throw bombs at Kwame Nkrumah and school children? Have they equally forgotten that Major General Joseph Ankrah was a special adviser to the president on defense, but betrayed him and joined hands with the military and police junta. It is not also on record that had it not been for the Africanization programee of Nkrumah those members of the junta would not have had the posts they had in the military and police?
  That also send our mind to the petition of the New Patriotic Party before the Supreme Court requesting for taking the right to universal adult suffrage from people from eight and half regions in this country, who belong to various tribes and have tribes men in all aspect of human endeavour in the country. That again is the disaster that NPP want to engulf this country because it want to be in power and steal the asserts of this country. We remember why Dick Chenny was in Iraq, and that was also hidden under the ruse of democracy.

  He, actually, brought about the realisation of independence for that famous rally to be held at the old polo grounds and for our beloved Country Ghana to be declared independent.
  
  Try as you may, re-writing the history books of Ghana, and in the process, be-little Kwame's contribution and role and that is where it becomes a problem. We would never ever see eye to eye.
  
  Like i said, the devil is a liar so please beware. Perhaps the the Reverend Professor may have a hidden agenda. Well then, so be it. I can't say anymore except to wish him well.

  In 1986 this man was giving a faculty lecture and guess what, it was quite embarassing to see then Mr Ocquaye shaking and fumbling.
  
  It is a picture of this gentleman that I have carried through my life till date. Wonders will never end , he has now found the courage to talk in public to the extent that he is trying to rewrite history with these falsehood.

By the time Ako Adjei persuaded Paa Grant to pay for Kwame Nkrumah to travel from London to Takoradi by boat, the name Ghana, together with the emblem and colours for its flag had already been agreed upon. You can't take that away from Danquah, Paa Grant, Ako Adjei and the rest.
  
  Nana Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II did a lot for Asanteman in the 20th century, but you cannot call him the founder of Asante Kingdom. Nana Sir Ofori Atta I did a lot for Okyenman in the 20th century, yet he is NOT the founder of Okyenman. Nii Kwabena Bonney did a lot for the Ga State and the Gold Coast as "Boycotthene," but you cannnot by any stretch of the imagination call him the founder of the Ga state.
  
  Danquah researhced and proposed the name Ghana for "independent Gold Coast" nearly forty years before it became a reality. No matter what anybody thinks of him, no one can take it away from him.
  
  I have an priceless signed copy of the American Declaration of Independence which I won in a 200th Anniversary competition in America in 1976. All the original people who signed it, from both sides of the civil war, have their names and signatures engraved in it. That is how nations pay tribute to their heroes. Unless we learn our history properly, its lessons will elude us and we shall contiinue to run around in circles as we are doing now!

The revisionists can say all they want but nine cases out of ten, it may be Danquah or Busia, but in the tenth inning it is Kwame the "Show Boy" all the way. Nkrumah never dies; he is Africa's Man of the Millenium and he is gtreater than Danquah. You cannot re-write history of our nation. Sorry, Prof - your notes are "apo" and archaic and antiquated!!

These were the words of Professor Kweku Folson the former Pro VC of the University of Ghana and head of the political Science dept when Ocquaye approached Folson to write the forward to his book "Politics in Ghana: 1972 to 1979" He (Folson) went on to outlay how the book is just a chronicle of events and lacks analytical approach. Such is the type and calibre of Prof Ocquaye and that can also be seen in his article when he makes the argument about the patent right owner of the name Ghana. Danquah with all the problems he had with Nkrumah never mentioned what Ocquaye is saying at the time. His quotes of 1947 and Nkrumah not being in the country at the time makes mockery since Ghana was not even born by that time. Come on Ocquaye get real.- Sami (SA)

Just read Afari-Djan's answers to questions on "Over-Voting, Biometric Verification and duplicate, triplicate and quadruplicate pink sheets" or the GYEEDA report and ask yourself if a country that is 56 years old deserves those.

I believe military regimes that rule for 20 something years like J.J Rawlings did in the guise of a revolution that initiated a ransfer of state assets to him and his cronies in a massive transfer of wealth to his people and his cadre. I believe all those years under his repressive rule negated achievements in Ghana and that the current chaos/corruption/economic breakdown in the land of plenty is all rooted in his voilent take over of the govt and people of Ghana. Give a lecture on that.

  Hancock boldly let his participation be known. When Nkrumah was seeking SG Now, Danquah advocated step by step approach. Nkrumah won idependence for Ghana. Nkrumah's declaration gave us a nation, Danquah's were words only.

  Earlier nationalist agitations also include the formation of the Fante Confederation in 1868 to the Aborigines Rights Protection Society (ARPS) in 1897 which is described as the most important mass protest movement in the land. It challenged obnoxious government policies such as the Lands Act of 1897, which it succeeded in preventing from being passed into law.
  
  These agitations intensified after World War II. Post-World War II saw the formation of political parties like the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) and Nkrumah’s Convention People’s Party (CPP) which not only demanded self-determination but total independence, the former independence as soon as possible and the latter independence now.
  
  This radical change in posture could be attributed to their past experiences i.e. the realisation that colonial rule was meant to serve the interests of the colonialists and the changed world situation among which were the Pan-African movements and congresses and their impact on the new generation such as Kwame Nkrumah. World War II experiences also exposed them particularly the war veterans to the weaknesses of the Europeans and made them recognise their own strength.
  
  It is worth noting the role of the pan-African ideals being propounded by Marcus Garvey, W.E.B Du Bois and others on the nationalist leaders such as Casely Hayford after World War I. Casely Hayford’s National Congress of British West Africa (NCBWA), the West African Students’ Union (WASU) which were very instrumental in the nationalist struggle had pan-African ideals. The latter particularly served as a training ground for the younger generation of the nationalist leaders who returned home highly sensitised and politicised.
  
  In 1947, the UGCC was formed by J.B. Danquah, Paa Grant and others. Kwame Nkrumah was invited to be its General Secretary in 1948. He broke away and together with K.A. Gbedemah and Kojo Botsio formed the CPP in 1949. Whilst he advocated for “self-government now”, the UGCC called for “self-government in the shortest possible time”.
  
  February 28, 1948 marked a watershed in the history of the country and the high mark of the nationalist struggle leading eventually to the granting of independence on March 6, 1957. This was the shooting and killing of three war veterans, Sergeant Adjetey, Lance Corporal Attipoe and Private Odartey-Lamptey who were among a group of veterans on a march to the castle to present a petition containing their grievances to the governor. This sparked of riots and looting throughout the country. Subsequent investigations and recommendations led to the 1951 Constitution and elections in 1951 following which Nkrumah was made Leader of Government Business.[6]
  
  Elections were held in 1954 which was won by the CPP. This basically granted internal self-government. Independence was however delayed till 1957 by the Togoland question and the formation of the National Liberation Movement. These raised the issues of whether trans-Volta Togoland was to join the Gold Coast and whether Ghana should become a federal or unitary state at independence. These were resolved by the 1956 elections which were won by the CPP and the 1956 plebiscite in which the British Togoland decided to join the independent state. On March 6, 1957 the Gold Coast became the first nation south of the Sahara to regain its independence. Declaring the independence of Ghana Nkrumah said "Ghana our beloved country is free forever! ... The independence of Ghana is meaningless unless it is linked up with the total liberation of the African continent", an indication of the impact of the pan-African movement on the nationalists.

Symbolically this young lady was there as if to say enough is enough let's get along. But so for as old man Oquaye is concerned he cared less about her presence and gesture.

I was a young pioneer, a little boy, and very enthusiastic about being a Young Pioneer. The man has a mental problem and should be checked. If we were not there before independence this is how a very dishonest Ghanaian because of politics of insults laced with hatred of the UP tradition will get away with such a MONUMENTAL LIE. The one that Danquah conceived, that was to rubber-stamp feudalism, make the chiefs and royals first class citizens and all others second class citizens (Serfs)or the one Nkrumah conceived and implemented that aimed to emancipate all Ghanaians and Africans in general from any form of oppression, whether from within or without? The fact that Nkrumah and his CPP won the 1951 elections meant that the then people of Gold Coast endorsed Nkrumah's "Ghana" and that Ghana which came into being on 6th March 1957 could not have been founded by anyone else but Nkrumah.

Following, again, the victory of Nkrumah's CPP in the 1956 parliamentary elections the British Government had no choice but to grant the demand for independence. Nkrumah and CPP won majority of the seats in parliament to satisfy the condition set by the British government. All this happened before JB Danquah and his reactionary party which had all along opposed "self-government now". So with this bit of history, as incomplete as it may be, who is the founder of Ghana? Your guess is as good as mine.
