The name Kwame Nkrumah is on the lips of everyone. You need no research to ind it anywhere.period oooooohhh period. Leave those who are ignorant to fend for themselves and leak their own wounds. The ARPS were part of the civil disobedience group that organised the 1949 demonstartions.

The fact of the matter is JB Danquah who wanted to be a leader by all means and at all cost usurp Kobina Sekyi the then leader of the ARPS to form the UGCC with the help of Paa Grant the finiacer. In fact the UGCC was formed in August 1949 and Kwame Nkrumah joined them in December 1949 so it is not as if the UGCC had existed many years before Nkrumah's arrival but only four months. It was upon the recommendation of Ako Adjei his mate at Lincoln Unversity that Kwame Nkrumah was called to join the the group. Kwame Nkrumah was a self-made man and was already making waves in the UK before he was invited to assist the group as their scribe(General Secretary). However, Nkrumah found out too soon that the UGCC group was not proactive but was always begging the colonialist.

So just as JB Danquah usurp Kobina Sekyi to take over the leadership as to what path to lead or move Ghana the then Gold Coast forward. Nkrumah also usurp Danquah to form the CPP which did not cooperate with the British and took over by propagating a revolutionary move by asking for independence now as against Danquah UGCC's independence in our life time. Had Ghana followed the latter princple; I am not so sure we would have regained our independence in 1957. So like every race there is only one winner and in this case Kwame Nkrumah came up on top with his fresh ideas and ideals.

Therefore, there is no two ways about it that Kwame Nkrumah's ideas and ideals won the race in that era, hence the founding father of modern Ghana. Period! Any futher questions? NO!!!

We are Africans with political systems and processes that preceeded the coming to our shores of the European man! Just in case you have forgotten; There was the Kanen Bono Empire, The Ghana Empire, Shangai Empire, The Mali Empire, The Ashanti Empire, The Mossi Empire, the Empires of the Nigerian Sub-region not to forget the Egyptian Pharoahs and the Nubian Pharaohs (in brief, a rich culture of governance).
These governments did not use "democracy", ask the Arabs now about their democratic Arab Spring! Nkrumah was an intelligent man who foresaw that systems like emanated from Greece were not the way we did things in Africa.
Please analyse our history and you would understand. Of course there are people of African decent that feel and believe EVERYTHING in the west is GOOD for Africa and her people.

It amuses me a lot that he thinks his ethnocentric insults shows his self worth and makes him a better person than those he and his ilk insult! There are over a billion Chinese in the world, you know? It is so tiresome to read daily these kinds of crude ethnocentric utterances from "These Akans" (expect my article on them soon) from the interior part of Ghana, particularly those from within the former Asante kingdom. So Samia, born in Ghana of a Ghanaian father, is now an Egyptian, eh? I should be proud of being called an Egyptian, the nation that produced one of the earliest civilisations in the world with all those pyramids! Of course, Nubia is an older civilisation than Egypt and the ancient Egyptians got their civilisation from there, including the act of building pyramids.

His level of control of the English Language betrays him as someone who didn't go beyond the SSS in Ghana before moving to Germany as a hustler. No doubt a fake refugee!

Look, the Founding Father/s of a nation is/are the person/s who led that nation to statehood as a new nation. A new independent entirety! Period! It doesn't matter that some people already have carved that territory into a country, as indeed the British did for present Ghana. Or, as Lord Lugard did for Nigeria, with the wife coining the word "Nigeria" for the new polity.

In the case of Ghana, there is no way anyone can associate JB Danquah and the secessionist opposition to a foundation status of Ghana. Nkrumah led that struggle to unite Ghana and keep it as one country to indep. That's why he deserved the accolade of Founding Father Number One! Others assisted him and did a lot, perhaps, even more, to make that possible. No one questions that. They also deserve recognition, if we have to waste time on offering dead people awards, etc., while we are still suffering from the mess practically all of them led Ghana into after indep.

As for the claim that the UGCC invited Nkrumah to be a part of the struggle, when Nkrumah arrived in the Gold Coast to take up that role, the UGCC was just a paper organisation! It was Nkrumah who went around the country to start building it as a political organisation. Besides, Nkrumah had already earned his colours abroad as someone determined to kick the imperialists out of Ghana/Africa. He forfeited his PhD. dissertation and defence in the Univ. of Penns., Phil. because of that and moved to the US, instead of making changes to it to tone down the alleged "communistic" part. His whole life abroad was dedicated to colonial freedom! He made himself and that's why he was chosen as the best person to lead the UGCC. The UGCC did not make him what he became except taught him some bitter lessons his comrades in London warned him against when he wanted to accept the invitation from those old reactionaries. He actually left them grudgingly, after being cajoled by Gbedema and others, then leader of the CYO, the most vibrant section of the political groupings then.

If a school drop out like me, as you said, can write in such plain limited English, a language of some rotten teeth living thousands of miles away, then certainly, I have proven to everyone that I am smart. Not only am I good in English, I am also good in both French and German, as well as my own language Twi.

Talking about Ewes, (this ethnic groups is the only group that could be considered as the 'SLEEPING GIANTS' of West Africa, if not the whole of Africa). Now let me tell you why.

Did you know that only 'Strong Ewes culture' that span over five countries in West Africa alone, and as far as some Caribbean Islands and western hemisphere in Haiti? Oh yes, you can still trace 'Ewes cultures' till date in:

1.Nigeria,
2.Republic of Benin
3.Togo,
4.Ghana and
5.Ivory Coast.

Haitians still traces their Ancestry to the Republic of Benin, and (they, Haitians still practice the Ewes Culture of Voodoo, till date).

A click on the Google of "Ghana's GDP" will reveal all the truth about the regretful invitation of Kwame Nkrumah to join the Independence Struggle of Ghana. It was the greatest mistake made in Ghana's history, for that laid the reason of all our poverty to date. The British were already leaving and there was no need for Nkrumah's so-called positive action...it was all for himself and few miscreant 'veranda boys' coveting political power for their selfish or personal economic gains!

Talk is cheap but it's Action that counts most. The Action is the Economy, and the CPP/Nkrumah government failed spectacularly in their rule from 1951 to 1966. It was 15 years of unbridled dictatorship of an usurper of power. Without Nkrumah, Ghana would be ranking at par in development to Malaysia and Singapore today...but now look at our wretched state of affairs: A very poor undeveloped country of near full unemployment and a broken education system with no public toilets for as many as 5.3 Million people, who defecate in public as animals do!

SAY IT LOUD...!

Nkrumah and his Nkrumaists have ruled Ghana from 1951 to 1966 as CPP (15 years); as NRC/SMC from 1972 to 1979 (7 years); as AFRC in 1979; as Dr Limann's PNP Gov't from 1979 to 1982(3 years); as Rawlings P/NDC from 1992 to 2001 (19 years); as this NDC (5 years) - This is almost 50 years misrule of the same bloody Nkrumaists of Ghana politics!!!!! One exclamation mark for each decade Nkrumaists have destroyed Ghana!

The Nkrumaists come in different colours and shapes, united by their bizarre hatred of everything NPP/PP/DOMO/UGCC, but their value is the same paperweight. They do not merely demonise Domo as 'Mate moho' but actually consider them apart of their domain...Ghana. Nkrumaists believe Ghana belongs to them because they support Kwame Nkrumah, who got independence from the colonialists, and should forever rule Ghana, and steal whatever they like. That true indigenes of the country are not allowed near political power because their ideology is not Nkrumaism!

For 50 years, we have heard all the poisonous talk of Ghana's Nkrumaists...they talk, they talk, and talk more...they are divisive, fractious, and xenophobic...they preach socialism and communista, but have been enriched materially through political power used to share our resources amongst themselves, these Nkrumaists. They over depend on political power passed on from generation to generation - not for Ghana's development but how they can get individual positions, privileges, commissions, contracts, jobs, money, scholarships, state housing, and CORRUPTION and BRIBERY!

Nkrumah is the fountain of corruption in Ghana. His Ministers took 10% bribes to build several mansions each...handed over to their children still in political power...and coveting more power for nothing.

Nkrumaists have torn Ghana to shreds.

The poverty; economic bankruptcy; filth and poor sanitation; low agricultural development; breakdown of cottage industries and fisheries; rural-urban migration; negative balance of payments, borrowing; low economic development can all be laid at the footsteps of the corrupt, utopian, incompetent, kalabule left-wing Nkrumaists.

If the UGCC had steadily negotiated Ghana's Independence, being given to us on a silver platter as a result of change of European minds to hand over the colonies, after their devastating Second World War...Ghana would be a land flowing with milk and honey; If you bet just look at their handiwork in the 10 years they have ruled Ghana: Rural development; Discovery of Oil; Freedom of Speech; Bui Dam; Rural and urban roads; Social programmes even after succeeding Governments that have sold all our resources as CPP and PNDC governments.

There is some truth in what she is saying and also some stretching of the facts of history at the same time. What really constitutes foundation of a nation, City, kingdom etc? We may ask " Who founded Rome?" In "Ab Urbe Condita", Livy attribute the foundation of Rome to Romus and Romulus. However, it was the Patricians who stood up to Tarquinus Superbus who gave birth to the Republic and the character of Rome. Some may therefore argue that Rome as we know from its Imperial and republican character was founded by the patricians including one Brutus.
Same may be said about Ghana. Modern Ghana as known today has its identity closely linked with Nkrumah, and not just the name for which members of the UGCC are all contributors. And then what about patriots like Sargeant Adjetey and his noble compatriots who perished on February 28th, 1948?
Let us honor them all for the great contributions and sacrifices they made. This nonsensical zero sum game mindset must be eschewed for a better Ghana!!!

Yes, J.B Danquah, Pa Grant and others did their bit in the liberation struggle,but if their effort was enough to clear the hurdle of colonialism, Nkrumah would not have been forced to come down. That alone made him a founder. If a boxer's trainer and management team prepares him, teach him how to take a fight and he succeeds in winning a title belt, who is the champion?

There is no doubt that Nkrumah was a great leader but like all dictators, their efforts will always amount to nothing. This is because there is never any appreciation by humans when you rule with brute force and try to distort facts. In fact he prepared himself much more than your UGCC group. Throughout his student days he was in lead of the decolonization project. Well trained in this vision, he organized the Manchester Pan-African Conference to a greater height. He subsequently visited various African and European countries to discuss the decolonization agenda with his like minded people.

Who amongst the UGCC group prepared himself like this? Cheap popularity wouldn't gain NPP foot in Ghana. Isn't Busia who sent a delegation to the British government that Gold Coast is not ready for Independence?

we accept that independence struggle of Ghana was in continuum but did not start from the UGCC but the Aboriginal Right Society lead by Caseley Hayford; he advocated for a single West African State. UGCC was a group who have no vision for the country. Their aim unlike Hayford was to succeed the white man to enjoy only a privilege life. Left to them alone, Ghana would have gained Independence in the 1980s. This explains why Nkrumah disassociated himself to formed his party.

That fact is, Danquah and his cohorts called Nkrumah over to be used and do their dirty work, for their personal gains and it backfired in their faces. Nkrumah is nobody's 'puppet' like you are, to your slave masters. That is what is hurting the likes of you till this very day.

You (UGCC, UP and now the NPP) claim to have wanted independence for us so much so that, you kept on pussy-footing issues with your slave masters for your own personal interests and playing with Ghanaian minds then; as you still do now.

Nkrumah being the Pan-Africanist that he is, saw through your deceit and lies and quickly got rid of all the hyprocrites like the Danquah's and the others to move the struggle for independence ahead at HIS OWN pace. Moreover, he did not throw bombs to achieve independence for us. He used his BRAINS to do so.

If you claim to love Ghana so much and tried to gain independence for us? Why then did you lot, led by Danquah and co. send a delegation to the Queen of your slave masters after independence that, we were not ready for it yet? Was it because you could not achieve it yourselves? How pathetic! The traits are still in you here, today.

Why then were you bombing your own people you claim to have gained independence for?

Why go all the way to destabilize the nation? Was it for your own selfish interests? Or was it done for the love of Ghana?

How can separatists colony, Ashanti confederation n, Northern Territories and British Togoland. In that process, Danquah and his followers supported “M’atsew me ho” Group, supported S. G. Antor in his campaign for British Togoland to wait and form one country with French Togoland (now Togo). It was the dynamic CPP under the visionary leadership of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah that fought hard and put the pieces together to create our nation Ghana as a unitary state as opposed to Danquah’s federation or confederation. Prof. Ocquaye cannot be ignorant of these facts and hence is indulging in blatant intellectual dishonesty and must be fought against vehemently.

Even the emblem of the eagle had been selected.

Those are the facts that Prof Ocquaye simply stated. As for the question of federation perhaps it would have advanced the development of Ghana through the "trickle down effect". Just think how much of cocoa and gold money has been poured down the abyss of "peace keeping" because of senseless butchering in some parts of the country!

Yesterday, there was a big hubris about who founded postcolonial Ghana. Worked up by Mike Ocquaye’s misleading account of history, I could not restrain myself from saving a few group-thinkers here on SIL, fine minds of course, who jumped on Ocquaye’s distorted bandwagon only to find themselves in a grubby ravine and not the ‘red planet’ he promised. Damn!

Firstly, there is a big difference between History and Political Science. Secondly, there is a conceptual gulch between hypothesizing something one thinks to be plausible, yet farther away from the truth, and making a verifiable claim. It does not, and should not, take an epistemologist to know the preceding.

Nobody is denying that Joseph Boakye Danquah was one of the finest brains behind Ghana’s independence. Yes, he was. That said, the supposition that he planted the seed for Kwame Nkrumah to harvest is based on deformed thinking. Purging this mindset requires a conversation and I am here for one.

For the sake of a debate, I claim the below as a fact and I call for a challenge. It was Nkrumah’s activist politics, and not JB Danquah’s lackadaisical posture, that sped up Ghana’s independence. It was Nkrumah liberatory brand of politics that earned Ghana respect among the community of nation-states.

At no point in his political life did Nkrumah claim that he single-handedly found Ghana. In his writings, which may here have not read, yet are spiteful in their assessment of him, Nkrumah acknowledged that postcolonial African nation-states’ survival lied with the input of the collective and not posturing of some ‘educated’ royals, among them Joseph Boakye Danquah.

There was no nation called Ghana, pre 6th March, 1957. Gold Coast became Ghana, a nation-state, after Kwame Nkrumah’s official declaration at the Old Polo Grounds, that a new nation, Ghana, is born. Where the idea that Gold Coast be named Ghana came from is moot.

To stir the hornet’s nest, I contort the name Ghana to mean [G]od [H]as [A]ppointed [N]krumah [A]lready. History is all about narratives, historical or contemporary developments. Ocquaye’s account on who founded Ghana is disdainful to say the least. Where is Justice William Atuguba when I needed him the most? Hope all is well. Good day and cheers.

Samia, please stop the distortions. Your father wasn`t the founder of Ghana. J. B. Danquah, who happens to be the leading member of UGCC and also Nana Akufo-Addo`s uncle founded Ghana. Infact it was him who suggest that the name be changed from Cold Coast to Ghana, even before Nkrumah was brought back from the US, through Liverpool, England to Ghana.

Your Dad was an opportunist; he formed a break-away party the CPP after causing cracks in the UGCC and with he support of his African American friends, Dr. Martin Luther King and W E B Du Bois, won elections, while he was in prison.

Nkrumah, after independence started building on the ideals of communism. He started build state enterprises instead of allowing local or private businesses to be the engine of economic growth. Instead of allowing our banks and financial institutions to help local businesses, he started offering free scholarships to some African leaders, thinking the huge 450 million pounds that he`d found in our national coffers, and which had been saved by the British rulers was more that okay to make him succeed.

Nkrumah didn`t want to take any ideas from anyone, except his friends like Du Bois, who was himself born and raised in the United States, but strangely thought that communism was better for Africans or Black people. Du Bois had started preaching his crazy message of communism back in the US and quickly became a threat to esp. when the cold war was at its peach. He got stuck in Ghana, unable to return to the United States when his passport expire. The US refused to renew his passport.

Soon, Nkrumah began asking all Ghanaian families to submit a list of their belongings or declare their assets to state. He was quickly preparing Ghana to become a communist state. The British who had promised to build the Akosombo Dam to help in our industrialization backed out of that noble project citing financial problems, esp., when Nkrumah started arresting and imprisoning his political opponents, like J. B. Danquah and made sure he died in prison.

Nkrumah was a wicked man! It`s a fact. But Ghanaians forgive him for his error and wickedness. J. B. Danquah the founder of Ghana`s independence struggle, died a very painful death through torture in prison.

Nkrumah started building state enterprises instead of allowing the growth of private businesses. He had soon forgotten that it was people like Paa Grant a wealthy local business owner and a timber merchant who funded his passage from Liverpool, in the UK, to Ghana. He established The Black Star Line, Ghana Industrial Holding Corporation (GIHOC) Ghana Cement, Aboso Glass Factory, State Farms, like Kwamoso Palm Plantation; State this, state that. Through propaganda, there were tunes like: `work and happiness` that were played on the airwaves; mobile cinemas went around to propagate Nkrumah`s ideas. Not very long, Ghana`s coffers began getting dry; people started complaining and the future seemed bleak and gleam. Nkrumah had failed in his dreams of making Ghana a prosperous nation.

Space and time won`t permit me; this is a public forum. But to let Samia know, I was little boy when the propaganda message: `Nkrumah never dies` was being spread around. It was then that Nkrumah and his wife Madam Fathia, Samia and Gamel (I didn`t see Sekou) visited Akropong School For the Blind, where I grew up. I still remember. All roads on the entire Akuapem range was blocked; there was no traffic movement, except heavy security. It`s was very frightening!

samia you need to read ghana history books to know who your dad was. i still salute him for his achievements he really had vision and did alot in the sixties, the akosombo dam, tema harbour, tema oil rifenery, most of the government industries like tema textiles, akosombo textiles,the two sugar factories, ghana rubber industry, jute factory hmmmmm, governmental departmental stores like GNTC, UTC. your dad was great and this list is not exhaustive, it can go on and on. all we have from the 80's till now is sharp teethed politicians beating the drums of war with their with no economic and developmental visions and yet they want people to die for them to channel their unfounded political agenda the eat all and forget about the masses agenda. brothers and sisters, please accept any verdict the supreme court comes out with in peace for it is not worth fighting and dying for these politicians who have nothing good to offer accept to live fat on our natural resouces and and to merry at our expense while alot needed to be done to make ghanaians happy with jobs and good education. everything has been falling apart for lack of accountability, men in positions do whatever they want with our resources and no one goes after them. what has committees of teams and investigators come out of all crimes by men in power against the state, nothing they still enjoy their positions or moved to another department and the same circus of shit continues. we need a third and stronger party to save us from this two political party's who are causing mayhem everywhere. let those that beat the wars of drum dance to the tune of the drums. sick headed politicians with no visions. nkrumah was the best thing that happened to ghana and africa, no one leader from this current crops of political fraudsters have even an atom of his brain. shame on you all for making ghana a living hell and you will never live to enjoy all your illgotten wealth God is watching. Nkrumah being the secretary to the Big six knew much about their agenda therefore he capitalized on their agenda in addition to his popularity to his newly formed party to win the election in 1957. The one that Danquah conceived, that was to rubber-stamp feudalism, make the chiefs and royals first class citizens and all others second class citizens (Serfs)or the one Nkrumah conceived and implemented that aimed to emancipate all Ghanaians and Africans in general from any form of oppression, whether from within or without? The fact that Nkrumah and his CPP won the 1951 elections meant that the then people of Gold Coast endorsed Nkrumah's "Ghana" and that Ghana which came into being on 6th March 1957 could not have been founded by anyone else but Nkrumah.
And let me add: It was Nkrumah's government that made the independence proposal to the British government in a white paper in 1956. Following, again, the victory of Nkrumah's CPP in the 1956 parliamentary elections the British Government had no choice but to grant the demand for independence. Nkrumah and CPP won majority of the seats in parliament to satisfy the condition set by the British government when Nkrumah tabled the independence white paper. All this happened in front of JB Danquah and his reactionary party which had all along opposed "self-government now". So with this bit of history, as incomplete as it may be, who is the founder of Ghana? Your guess is as good as mine. And by the way, where in the world do you have a founder of a nation who never ruled that country? I need to be proved wrong.
Prof. Oquaye’s pronouncement is a clear example of the difference between a politician and a political scientist. While Prof Oquaye happens to be both it is clear that on this occasion it was Oquaye the politician who was speaking and hence the distortion of facts to suit his political interests rather than an objective appraisal (as he could have done as Oquaye, the political scientist) of the two men – Nkrumah and Danquah – on the issue of the founder of modern Ghana.

In 1945, Marcus Garvey,Du Bois and others held a Pan African Awareness Conference in Manchester.Azikwe of Nigeria,William Johnson of Sierra Leone Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana attended that meeting.
Nkrumah became the West Africa Pan African organizer in London after that.
Meanwhile,some educated and prominent business men and some Chiefs back home had found the White rule to be Oppressive and therefore had formed The Fante Confederation to seek to wrestle power from the Whites.Among them were George Grant,Casley Hayford,George Ferguson, John Mensah-Sarbah,King Ghartey of Winneba etc.So you see the Fantis did not only learned how to bake bread and drink Tea with butter on bread.They were the first to form what is known today as political party.
Later, other people who were not Fantes joined so the name was Changed to Gold Coast Aboriginals.And later to UGCC.Some
of the names that comes to mind were JB Danquah,Akuffo Addo,William Ofori Atta, Obetsebi Lamptey,J. Tsiboe Darko,Otumfuo Agyman Permejh,Arko Agyei etc etc.
The UGCC needed a dynamic person so on the recommendations,we hear of Arko Adjei (?) Kwame Nkrumah was invited to come back to the Gold Coast and to UGCC in1947.
Cape Coast was the former Capital City and Saltpond also in the Central Region was the headquarters of UGCC.
Nkrumah was given the position of General Secretary.Within a very Short time,the name Kwame Nkrumah became a house hold name.B'cos the man was Soo dynamic and a Crowd uller by his Speeches and Strategies.The whole Country knew they now had a leader Who Can take them to the promised land in the person of Kwame Nkrumah.So in 1948,Nkrumah Caused the masses to Riot (POSITIVE ACTION) as peoples were then agitating for Independence.Nkrumah was arrested and imprisoned as a result.
The UGCC said Self Govt ,Step by Step.Nkrumah disagreed with them to Say Self Govt NOW! So Nkrumah inaugurated his CPP party at Salrpond in 1949 to pary ways with the UGCC and or the UP(mate me ho) Camp.

The One who was in the Race and finished first gets the Gold Cup for himself and on behalf of his Team.In this Case Kwame Nkrumah was the One invited by the Governor to form a government.And to declare Independence to his people in the night of March 6th 1957.Danquah was not even a member of Nkrumah's party.Where was Danquah here ?.

THAT THE ISSUES THAT LED THE LATE FIRST PRESIDENT TO BREAK AWAY FROM THE UGCC THAT I RESPECTFULLY RESERVED IT FOR AN FUTURE RELATED EVENT THAT MAY CALL FOR THE HISTORICAL ACCOUNT.
