  Steel manufacturers worldwide are looking for alternatives to ferrous scrap (DRI, HBI, iron nuggets etc.). Government must rather encourage Mr Patel and co. to be more innovative. It is not economically impossible to produce alternative iron materials from the three or four iron ore deposits in Ghana to feed the local steel industries. That way, we can sustain the jobs of the scrap dealers along with those working in Mr Patel's steel industry and create a new job avenue likely to employ several thousands of Ghanaians. Mr Patel's plea is typically Indian - play a victim in the eyes of the government and scuttle the efforts of the scrap dealers behind the scenes, so that he can continue to pay them peanuts! Only one winner can emerge from Mr Patel's scheme. Mr Patel alone!

  Value added is the way economies have developed great nations. Scraps into processed goods is always better than selling scaps - be it gold, iron, etc. Same principle applies to cocoa vs chocolate, raw fish vs starkist, bauxi ...

  Value added is the way economies have developed great nations. Scraps into processed goods is always better than selling scaps - be it gold, iron, etc. Same principle applies to cocoa vs chocolate, raw fish vs starkist, bauxite vs aluminum products.
  
  Not only that, enforcing the ban will prevent the continued theft by some individuals who think they can make money exporting the stolen metal - at least this way if they continue it will go on to help improve our own economy.
  
  We need to get out of the mentality of exporting raw products

  I disagree with you we are not producing a lot of iron ore in Ghana and have to recycle the scrap metal here in Ghana I think it will benefit Ghana to do the recycle here than exporting it overseas.
