Yes, NPP represents the Roman god Janus for whatever reason. My question to CPP is, who was Nkrumah's vice when he was in power? How does he rule a whole nation with a population of at least 10 million people without a vice president? What was his motive for not having a vice president or he is of the opinion that no body in the country at that time can be his vice? Nkrumah was a power drunk manic.

Listening to their drivel here, you will think only they loved Ghana and the UP people just hated Ghana; they only wished to stay under colonialism. Ebei ask yourself why did they form a party then, what did you think they were fighting for before Nkrumah came? Your propaganda party will remain where it is, an insignificant party, which fails to give credit where credit is due. You will remain a Kweku Ananse party for the rest of time. The people do not march to your drumbeats anymore, can't you see? When the fool wises up, all the propaganda brainwashing parades and comrade nonsense come to an abrupt end.
Pelicles asked the question why did Nkrumah not have a Vice President? Get on with the program brother, he was life president, and he intended to stay on, North Korea style, until he could arrange to have sycophants like Kwesi Pratt and Atta Mess in places, who will ensure his Kwame Nkrumah children will succeed after him as president. For life presidency meant political dynasty. Just imagine one of the kids being president in a one-party state. A president Sekou / Samia or Gamel Nkrumah. That was where he was going with the quixotic pipe-dream. We the people had other plans and showed him the exit. There is an Nkrumah-like president in Africa today. He is called Robert Mugabe. At the ripe age of 89, he still ran for re-election. He will be 95 when his current mandate runs out. Seriously, is this what the CPP wanted for Ghana? You guys are crazy if nobody has told you yet.

Nkrumah with his enthusiasm for power decided to oppose the UGCC, managed to tell the uneducated majority ghanaians that all five others had broken from him, hence they were rather matemehu people. He knew the agenda of the UGCC so he made quick to bypass them, for power. However the history is there, Nkrumah sidelined them the winner takes it all policy; so we suffer. There was no struggle for Independence in Ghana when Nkrumah was brought down by other patriotic Ghanaians. I mean the the type of struggle faced by Namibia, Angola, South Africa etc. The patriots in Ghana had already agitated for independence since better educated stalwarts and Nationalists like Ekem Ferguson, George Kuntu Blankson, Emmanuel Kwegyir Aggrey, Aborigines Rights Protection Society, UGCC, International lobby, including Africans in Diaspora, Southern African ANC formed in 1912, Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe, Marcus Garvey etc... Who is Kwame Nkrumah to the eternal struggle of the Blackman? Does he know how Cape Coasters fought the Colonialists in a war that led to the removal of the Capital from there to Accra? or the role of Ewuraba Afua, who slapped the Colonial Governor with a full loin cloth of menstruated blood? What about the incessant wars between the Asantes and the British?
Kwame Nkrumah was a bloody opportunist hankering for political power to show off and he failed spectac;larly because he was as intelligent enough to rule even his own Nzema than Ghana...In fact, the British Colonialist had just come out of a most bloody destructive Second World War and so exhausted. The Labour Party that defeated the Conservatives under Winston Churchill after 1945 turned their backs on Colonialism under Clement Attlee, who thought it was unethical to resist Nazimsm and continue with colonialism...The business interest was the only snag. The stage was set for handing over the colonies: Without this, Nkrumah's lame agitation would have come to naught; thus there was no real need for Nkrumah's agitation. The leaders were all in the same boat pushing for Independence at the shortest possible time...then the most fanciful ideologue imbued with his socialist empty dogma began to divide Ghana with his politicking to win power now with group of thieving landless poor rogues called veranda boys: They appealed to ignorant masses that they were more caring than others whereas in truth they were thieves looking to amass wealth for themselves as they could not succeed in their personal lives wion their own as their children continue to do in Ghana politics. Of course they won power after the 1950 Elections and began to rule Ghana in 1951. The 6 March 1957 parade was a mere Ceremony to crown them as the first independent African state etc...but the truth is bitter:
That without CPP, Ghana wont be so broken, dishevelled, poor, filthy, with all our coffers emptied by socialist millionaires leaving the rest of us with bankruptcy and indebtedness galore.
CPP is the same as NRC or SMC. They became PNP under Limann and then organised themseves behind Rawlings to rule for 19 years before they resurfaced under CPP loving Atta Mills...They are all CPP...
They have stolen Ghana's wealth to build mansions for themselves. They have caused poor people their sad positions. If Nkrumah had joined with others to take power as was done in Malaysia, Korea and Singapore Ghana would have been soundly developed than the present wretched state where 5.4 Million do not have decent toilets!
Away with Nkrumaism and all the hogwash and their communista nonsense that has made us a laughing stock in World Politics...

Just mark it down, your only guy in parliament is there for the first and the last time.
The writer could have engaged the NPP without attacking NDC but as losers always do he decided to include the NDC in this crap.
If it was about corruption that brought NPP to power how come the "angel party" called CPP could not win that election?
Let it be clear to these CPP people that though some elements in the NDC continue to promote Nkrumah against the will of the people of Ghana, that will never change the fortune of that party in Ghana and I can assure them that no Nkrumah party will win election in Ghana at least not in this century so the earlier they join either the NDC or the NPP based on individuals choice the better for them.

The best of NPP was to collect loans and spread them around as if we are not obligated to pay them with interest.
Where as Nkrumah was investing in some projects like electricity to harness our resources and generate income for the state by selling power to neighboring countries.
Nkrumah show poise of vision in all aspects, just that those hate to see you prosper will come with all sort of fickles and feeble arguments to obstruct you gainful and delighted projections no matter what.

The French Government system, like many parliamentary systems, does not have a vice president. The speaker of the Senate is the de facto vice president.
The constitution of the first republic of Ghana categorically that the Speaker of parliament automatically becomes the nations president should anything happen to the president so the Speaker of parliament was de facto vice president.
Oyokoba, the UGCC boys club was not a party, it was Kwame Nkrumah who turned the UGCC into a fully fledged party. Nkrumah joined the UGCC when it was ONLY FOUR MONTHS old so it is not as if the UGCC had existed several years before the arrival of Nkrumah. A four months boy club that was incapable of running its daily business had to call Nkrumah from far away UK, Why? Kwame Nkrumah was self made made man and was already making waves in the UK which is why Ako Adjei his mate at Lincoln university recommended him for the secretary position. By the way, the purse or bill to bring Nkrumah home from Liverpool was footed by Paa Grant alone. Danquah was as poor as a church mouse which why they needed a financier like Paa Grant.
But this long overdue brilliant fact finder from the CPP is not about whether or not Kwame Nkrumah had a vice president but to finally debunk and lay to rest the Mate Mehu NLM/UP/PP/PFP/NPP perennial lies and rumours.
And also remember before UGCC there was the ARPS( 1897-1951) led by Kobina Sekyi in the 40's who Danquah usurp to form the UGCC. Look the UGCC was only 4 months old when Nkrumah joined them in the autumn of 1947 because during the second World war political parties were not allowed by the British until after 1945. Mind you the Name Ghana was circulating or making rounds during Casely-Hayford lifetime a historian who even called for the confederation of West Africa states due to our common history and Ghana empire being the first of its kind in West Africa followed by Mali Empire was the name of choice African scholars of that era cherished.
The UGCC was disbanded after the disastrous performance in 1951 elections at which time Nkrumah was even in prison he was unbeatable. The CPP won 34 out 38 seats with the UGCC winning only 2 seats . This resulted in the formation of Ghana Congress Party in 1952 where a bitter fight ensued between Nii Armah Ollennu , Busia and J.B. Danquah as to who to lead the new party. Danquah the opportunist who just made the cut to parliament which would be his first and last usurp Ollennu and he Ollenu retired from active politics due to Danquah’s blackmailing him. They never became friends again. In the end Busia edged Danquah to become leader of the new founded Ghana Congress Party which was made of some dissatisfied CPP members and to a greater extent members of the disintegrated UGCC. This new party formation never helped either. The election debacle continued and it was repeated in 1954 and 1956 respectively where Danquah lost even in his Akyem backyard twice. So Danquah who never held any important post be it minister position or otherwise does not deserve any recognition.
Also the name Ghana was is not the property of Danquah and not patented by him. The name Ghana existed in the 8th century and was many centuries older than Danquah so you nation wreckers are not the first to know the of Ghana.
Today, the five members of the erstwhile UGCC are riding on the back of world famous Kwame Nkrumah and that is the plain truth.
Nkrumah lives! We still face forward. Long live Maame/Daavi Ghana in ample Freedom and social Justice

It is the declaration of Nkrumah as the Nation's only President for as long as he lived that tarnishes his image as a selfless leader.
Even though many countries at his time were ruled by dictators, a few declared themselves as such only to elevate their opposition's efforts to oust them. Had the CPP not opted for an one-party State, shoved down the throat of the Country by its massive majority in Parliament, that President-for-life declaration would have been quickly overlooked, and thought of as a goal to achieve per series of Election victories.
The combination of that declaration and the one-party idiotic policy is what certified Nkrumah as a bona fide dictator.
Indisputably, Houphouet Boigny was no more benign and progressive dictator than Nkrumah. Yet, aided by his Western powerful allies, he enjoyed a longer span of ruling over the Côte d'Ivoire. So also did Singapore's first President Lee Kuan Yew, personal friend of Nkrumah's.
We must seriously study why both Lee and Houphouet survived but Nkrumah did not. I have my own thesis on that but I would enjoy reading what other folks think on that.
It has also been cited that a truly patriotic, selfless dictator (oxymoronic ?) that last long enough would achieve a lot in developing his Country. But would Mugabe be one of those?
Having mentioned all the above, may I naively ask why our Democracy is not producing much for building our entrepreneurial backbone beyond Elections?
Let us brainstorm together for the best answers.

Oyokoba, talking about dynasty intended for Nkrumah's children by the CPP, what do you make of the persistent ambition of Nana Akufo-Addo to be the next President like his father Akufo-Addo was?
After all, the CPP has yet to declare any of Nkrumah's children as its flagbearer, even if it plans to do so in the future. Many, including inner core members of NPP, have resented what they perceive as Nana's insistence on being the next President from NPP. They and many in the general Public complain about how Nana's demand for the position amounts to some claim of a legacy he is entitled to. Would you call that persistence of Nana's an attempt to build a dynasty? And if not, why?
By the way, do we know for sure Nkrumah was the only President without a vice, among his peers, including those beyond Africa? Who is David Cameron's vice?
Let us Learn, Oyokoba, without the insults. We seem to be too sentimental in staking these claims of fame for our various political idols that we barely leave room for truly objective analysis based on provable facts. How then do we advance without repeating the errors our predecessors made?

The Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (DPM) is a senior member of the Cabinet of the United Kingdom. The office of the Deputy Prime Minister is not a permanent position, existing only at the discretion of the Prime Minister, who may appoint to other offices – such as First Secretary of State – to give seniority to a particular Cabinet Minister. The current Deputy Prime Minister is Nick Clegg, who was also appointed Lord President of the Council along with special responsibility for constitutional and political reform.
Unlike analogous offices in some other nations, including the United States Vice Presidency, a British deputy prime minister possesses no special powers as such, though they will always have particular responsibilities in government. They do not assume the duties and powers of the Prime Minister in the latter's absence or illness, such as the powers to seek a dissolution of parliament, appoint peers or brief the sovereign. They do not automatically succeed the Prime Minister, should the latter be incapacitated or resign from the leadership of his or her political party. In practice,

None of the Ministers of State have Deputy. It was Not only the Prime Minister. I cannot tell you why. The plausibility of finding it unnecessary but cost effective at the time considering the size of the size of the population surely outweigh the logic of 'power drunk'. It's not the act itself that matters but the deeds. I do not the idea of president for life but someone like Nkrumah serving the nation for life would preferred to all those leaders that have come after him combined. You failed to mention the fact that Nkrumah himself publically declared that he would have quitted Ghanaian politics in 1972 by which he would have carried Ghana's development to the level of modern day Malysia in order to take the bigger problem of Continental Unity, Goverment and Development. Can we therefore conclude that, 'President for Life' was a mere political tool to mute political detractors just to carry the heavy duty of that Development Agenda?
I still prefer the Zimbabwian leadership style than the Ghanaian one where we change government but foreigners are milking intensely the resources of the country without being noticed.

The British are supposed to have left around 200 million pounds sterling for Ghana. So the British are telling us that for the over 100 years that they ruled the Gold Coast they paid a paltry sum of 2 million pounds sterlings yearly for the massive amount of gold, diamond, manganese, bauxite, timber etc that they took from the Gold Coast. And yet there are Ghanaians who are proud that the British left us this 'disrespectful' amount of money. Will it be wrong for me to conclude that British rule in the Gold Coast was purely exploitative? No doubt it was!!!The Gold Coast was left poor and undeveloped.

If Nkrumah had come to the Gold Coast on his own accord, formed his own party like Busia did no one in his or her right mind will say anything negative about him [Nkrumah]. As it is, his fare was paid, a job, accommodation, and even the whit-drill suit worn by him were all provided by the UGCC. The UGCC was fighting for Self Government before he [Nkrumah] arrival. What makes Nkrumah an opportunist is that, if he had not been invited to the Gold Coast at that time, he will be in no position to undermine the UGCC. THE MAN NKRUMAH WAS WICKED, FULL OF HATE FULL OF ENVY, PROPAGANDIST AND POWER DRUNK.

Your article speaks volumes about you. CPP is not denying that Nkrumah was brought home by the UGCC. After he arrived, he realized that the UGCC was not interested in the mission for which they brought him home - independence.
They wanted to use him and he refused to be used. It was the people who demanded that Nkrumah broke away from the UGCC. He did the wishes of the people.
In the end, the UP tradition collaborated with the CIA and they halted the march to the promised land on February 24, 1966. So this tradition is the enemy of the people of Ghana, with Afrifa and company fronting for them.

Matemehofo - aka NLM/UP/PP/NPP destroyed Ghana when they handed decision making in Ghana to the CIA outfit called the Harvard Economic Advisory Group. This Advisory Group was turned into an intergovernmental organization (IGO) that formed an alliance with Bank of Ghana officials and other civil servants including Kwame Pianim, Kofi Annan (who later became UN Secretary General) to direct decision making in Ghana during the Busia era - one should read Appiah-Menka's (Apino Soap) autobiography for more on this alliance.
In the article, “External co-optation of a less developed country’s policy making: The case of Ghana, 1969-1972,” the author advances the thesis that the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and creditor countries structured the context in which their client, Ghana—a less developed country—formulated its economic policy between 1969 and 1972. The intergovernmental organizations and creditor countries failed to take Ghana's domestic political situation into account, however. When the country became heavily dependent upon the IGO's and creditors for financial assistance to enable the government to survive a disastrous shortfall in foreign exchange earnings, it was forced to accept extreme and politically dangerous measures in order to secure assistance. The policies that were adopted were catastrophic, and destroyed what remained of the democratic government's public support. This dramatic change in public climate made the government fatally vulnerable to a military coup d'etat in January 1972.
The following excerpts from "External Co-optation of a Less Developed Country's Policy Making: The Case of Ghana, 1969-1972" by Ronald T. Libby in World Politics, Vol. 29, No. 1. (Oct., 1976), pp. 67-89 sheds more light on Danquah-Busia-Dombo's (NPP) misrule in 1969-72.
Despite personality differences, the members of the group were united in their opposition to the government's economic policies which until August 1971 had been the exclusive preserve of the Minister of Finance, J. H. Mensah. They consciously orchestrated their efforts with the IGO's to influence the Prime Minister.
Initially, they sought to ally themselves with the IBRD, and later with the IMF, in an effort to defeat Mensah's economic policy.
Jones Ofori-Atta explained this informal alliance with the Bank:
All donors looked at the Bank's reports as "the" data. Those who wanted to persuade J. H. to adopt a policy, posed the policy in Bank terms. We had to form an alliance with the Bank to get Busia's approval. Busia took his cue from the IBRD/IMF dislike of J. H. It became evident to Busia as early as March 1971 that something would have to be done about J. H. . . . I requested an IBRD Resident Representative to get more firm commitments from them and to get projects through more quickly and get support in the fight against J. H.; Mc-Namara liked the idea.'
The official reported that, with the support of the World Bank, they "broke J. H.'s back." At meetings which were chaired by the Prime Minister, Mensah could not casually explain away or blithely justify his policies; he had to give systematic evidence with data to compete with the opposing evidence which was being produced by the coalition. From approximately August 1971 until December 1971, an intense contest for control of Ghana's economic policy took place between the coalition of the DAS and the Bank of Ghana, backed by the IGO's on one side and the Minister of Finance, J. H. Mensah, on the other.
The lines of demarcation between the two sides surfaced in late January 1971 on the occasion of the Prime Minister's announcement of a major Cabinet reshuffle. There were ten major Cabinet changes; three ministers were removed. The most significant change was that of the division of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning into two ministries. The Prime Minister himself took control of the planning portfolio, leaving Mensah with only the Ministry of Finance, thus reducing Mensah's virtual monopoly over economic policy. It was a public humiliation of Mensah and an effort to undercut his control. Busia took this extreme action at the urging of Ghana's donor and creditor countries and the IGO's. An official who was working in the Office of the Prime Minister at the time explained the circumstances leading to Busia's action: "J. H. was not briefing the Cabinet on the economic situation. He also went to creditor country meetings and the meetings broke down. Nothing happened. Aid flow stopped. A debt settlement had to come before aid would come. He would not brief the P. M. People who came to see him were not received well. There would not be aid without a debt settlement and a plan. The Bank and Fund and embassies complained about this.
What was at stake in the Prime Minister's decision to reduce Mensah's authority was ability of the creditor countries and IGO's to influence Ghana's economic policy. The removal of the Ministry of Economic Planning from Mensah's control was a prelude to the emergence of the informal alliance between the internal coalition, the IGO's, and the creditor countries. A high-level administrator for the U.S. Agency for International Development who participated in Ghana's 1970 aid meetings described the nature of this alliance as follows:
"Creditors used Bank/Fund documents as the framework of correct policies for Ghana. They were the principal economic consultants and arbiters in the process. The Ghanaians had the Harvard group, and the creditors used the Bank and Fund as go-betweens with the Ghana Government."'
The IGO's coordinated all action by imposing the requirement of a development program and policies as a sine qua non for aid from donor countries. The Bank, for example, would not recommend an aid program for Ghana until the government had produced a plan and a set of policies that were acceptable to it. Mensah had resisted this pressure by arguing that the development ministries were not themselves able to design a sufficient number of sound development projects, and that a development program comprised only of projects would not be adequate for Ghana's needs. He had also taken the position that unless the ministries knew the size of the aid commitments, they could not formulate a suitable development program. The pressure to produce a plan and to adopt policies which were acceptable to the IBRD prompted the Prime Minister to remove the Ministry of Economic Planning from Mensah's control. By restructuring Ghana's economic policy-making apparatus, Busia created a direct policy-formulating link with the IGO's and creditors.
In February of 1971, shortly after taking personal control of the planning ministry, Busia created a special Cabinet-level Standing Development Committee (SDC) as the government's principal decision making body for economic policy. The committee was chaired by the Prime Minister himself, and included Mensah and Frimpong-Ansah. These two men were the principal antagonists and, in the beginning, tended to dominate the meetings. The Economic Advisory Committee and the Economic Review Committee were under the SDC in terms of policy-making authority; their members were more technically oriented. The function of the latter two committees was to advise the Cabinet on short-term economic events. The heart of their work was the transmission of economic reports on the state of the economy to the SDC. These reports were produced under the supervision of Killick, a member of the DAS team, and were instrumental in undermining Mensah's authority in Busia's eyes.

Thank you Pelicles. Yes Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah was overthrown by a coup d'état in his absence for a peace mission in Hanoi, China by the greedy traitors and nation wreckers Kotoka and Afrifa who sold Ghana to the CIA and the British for a mere three thousand pounds 3, 000.00. That was what they felt Ghana was worth!!. In the circumstances here was no power struggle within the party hierarchy because the Military had taken over and the 'dumbs' like Gen. Ankrah, Harley, Deku and co. formed the leadership. It paved the way for the UP/PP party who felt that the only way to match the might of the political supremacy of the CPP was to ban it and they did. That is how the CPP had been sent to a long sleep and had been inert for a long time until recently. Go to world acclaimed institutes or libraries and you will even find the history of Adolph Hitler. Today people Study the leadership style and the charisma of Hitler. But for the low and narrow minded politicians at the time of the coup d'état i.e mainly the UP gangs, anything about Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah must be destroyed including his books and images which were and are valuable materials for academic studies and research for Ghana and the rest of the world. Could you understand that our leaders at that time even aimed to destroy the industrial and economic initiatives by Dr Kwame Nkrumah by all means, These included many factories at Tema, Accra, Kade, Suhum, Tamale Bawku, the Okponglo Atomic Plant, Tamale Aiport, Takoradi and many others. All these decision, were taken by the NLM/UP/PP die 'hards' like Busia, Afrifa, Victor Owusu, R.R Amponsah, Justice Apaloo. Jato Klaeo, JH Mensah, Okyehene Nana Ofori Attah and co.

There is a clear evidence that he constructed a railway line in far away Mauritania as well as some low cost estate houses in Cape Verde. Now, the question is why wasting our monies in these areas which is not part of Ghana?
Nkrumah did well but he could have done more. He was the only leader who inherited no debt but after he was kicked out of office, there was massive debt due to misappropriation. Corruption and whatever the nation is going through currently, was the result of Nkrumah' insensitivity.

Are you comparing Bill Gates to Nkrumah? Let me ask you this, will you be generous to an outsider while your house is not all that in order? Was Nkrumah a millionaire or on what ground was he spending our monies on an entire continent and who gave him that obligatory?
What did that "African Personality of the 20th century" gave to the ordinary Ghana in the remotest part of the country? You are rather ignorant in the sense that you live in Germany but lack critical thinking.
Look at Ghana and her precarious position. People cannot make ends meet. Hospitals are without medicines. Workers have not been paid while our roads are crumbling all due to how our nations foundations was not properly structured. Nkrumah should have laid a solid foundation to stand the test of time. How do you see the foundation of the nation where you live? It is shaky like our?
Talk about African Unity at that time in the continent history and does it make sense to unite Africa at that time? Presently, are we that united and what is the reason behind any shortfall about this unity? Even Ghana is not that united let alone the entire Africa.
Why do you think that Donor nations should support our budget? Are we not independent to manage our own affairs so, what went wrong? If Nkrumah did not think of the entire continent and focused on Ghana, things would have been much better than today. He did quite okay but in the nutshell, he failed miserably.

Talking about infrastructure, if you are honest and sincere just take a look at Ghana today and you will see that the N1 which is a continuation of the Tema motorway is called the outer circle in the SYDP and BUI dam dam would have been completed in 1970. Major roads criss crossing Ghana and Telecomminications ,hospitals, Schools, universities; TOR, Tema Steel works,Tema Food Complex,Sanyo -Akasanoma, Tema Harbour and Township with industrial hub, Accra Airport, Takoradi boatyard, Kumasi Jute factory, Kumasi shoe factory, Aboso glass factory, Akosombo dam, Black Star line, Ghana Airways, 2 Textiles factory, over 20 State farms; from producing rubber at Tarkwa to pineapple, orangestobacco and poultry at Pokuase. Nsawam canary, affordable estate houses in every Region in Ghana and you blind rivet can't see any of them. Boy oh Boy; it beggars description. Word has it that it is licker for you.

Nkrumah laid a very good infrastructure foundation for Ghana. By infrastructure I mean roads, housing, railways, hospitals, energy and healthcare. In the area of roads and railways, Nkrumah built the Tema motorway and all the roads of Tema; the Accra-Winneba-Mankesim road and Swedru-Akim Oda road to name just a few. In Accra, he built the Ring Road to link Labadi and Korle Bu. The motorway was to be expanded to Mallam Junction to serve as the outer Ring Road for Accra. He built the Tamale-Bolganta-Narongo road.
He expanded the railway network by building the Takoradi-Tarkwa dual line, the Achiase-Huni Valley link, and more importantly, he reserved bulk transportation of timber, bauxite, manganese and cocoa to the railways. This arrangement for railways resulted in towns like Akim Oda, Prestea, Nkawkaw and Kumasi developing into major sawmill centres. This arrangement also eased the congestion on our roads. The monopoly that had been assigned to the railways for bulk transportation was scuttled by the NLC to enable Afrifa to operate his fleet of articulators to cart cocoa and timber directly from the rural areas to the ports. That set in motion the deterioration of road networks.
In terms of housing Nkrumah built Tema, Efiakuma, Adiembra (Sekondi), Labone, Kanda estates, North and South Suntreso estates in Kumasi, Sunyani, etc.
Nkrumah built the Tema Harbour and expanded the Takoradi Harbour as necessary infrastructure for our external trade.
In the area of health care, Nkrumah modernised the Korle Bu Hospital and built modern hospitals at Efia-Nkwata (Sekondi-Takoradi), Cape Coast and many others. The health centre that was built by Nkrumah at Baqua near Hohoe has not seen any painting or renovation after Nkrumah was overthrown.
In the area of education, there were 1083 primary schools in 1951 with enrollment of 153,360 pupils but by 1966 there were 8144 primary schools with enrollment of 1,137,495 pupils. There were 13 secondary schools in 1951. By the time Nkrumah was overthrown in 1966 there were 105 secondary schools.
I will suggest you go and read Kwame Akyeampong's article:Educational expansion and access in Ghana: A review of 50 years of challenge an progress. The article is available for free downloading from the Internet.
In the area of energy, Nkrumah built not only the Akosombo hydro-electric project, but he commenced work on the Bui Dam. At the same time, he started the Kwabenya Atomic Energy project and undertook feasibility studies for hydro-electric projects on 1000 rivers in Ghana, as well as undertake exploratory projects for oil. The Atomic energy project was not only abandoned by the NLC, the Busia administration gave away the core lab of the project and drove away all Ghanaian scientists who had been trained abroad for the project.
Nkrumah definitely laid a solid foundation for Ghana's economic transformation. His detractors in the NLC, NLM/UP/PP/PFP/NPP rather threw away the baby with the bath water. These detractors are the ones responsible for our crumbling roads, poor healthcare system, the deteriorating quality of education, and the joblessness in the country now.
Let us stop blaming Nkrumah, let us clean the mess. Forward ever.

Some of the achievements of the early post-independent era included a well-trained and motivated teaching force that was recognised as fundamental for ensuring quality of educational provision. Teachers enjoyed salaries comparable to people with similar qualifications in other professions with Nkrumah declaring that he wanted the profession to “to give service that is second to none” (McWilliam & Kwamena-Poh, 1975:97). Another achievement was the establishment of a Ghana Education Trust to support the rapid expansion of secondary and technical education.

Unfortunately, I can`t discuss things with people who are so myopic.Your arguments show that you have no idea about politics.Nkrumah laid solid foundation for us but we were very stupid to destroy everything. You must know that USA helped the Germans to rebuild their country although they had a lot problems at home. When I arrived in Germany in 1960,workers were buying food on credit. There were very few motorways then.Although Germany was destroyed a lot during the war, they never lost hope, worked hard and with the help from the allied forces, were able to go through all odds to rebuild their country. Why should Bill Gates help us when the USA has lots of poor people?Do you know how many schools, Universities, factories, hospitals etc. were built by Dr.Nkrumah?Who built Akosombo Dam,Tema Hbr. plus township, our only motorway ,just to mention a few?Who gave thousands of students scholarships to study in Europe because these institutions didn`t exist in Ghana under colonial rule? Why did those who overthrew him allow everything to collapse?I don`t know how old you are but I can tell you that I am very happy that we had a great leader and a visionary like Dr.NKrumah.All that Ghana can show now bears his handwriting. For almost 30 years, I have been helping the poor, the sick and needy in Ghana, who aren`t my reltives. This is how a human being should think and behave! And this is what Dr.Nkrumah did.Nobody can alter his legacy. He isn`t to blame if hopeless people can`t manage our country. If we had followed his 7 year development plan, we wouldn`t be suffering now.Have a nice day and be objective!

What a beautifully written piece. What a brilliant political analysis piece. Intellectually and academically concise. This is an envious and educating piece of brief political history which is intellectually stimulating and challenging in the style of writing, precise and crisps use of vocabulary. This piece would be credited for its excellence and no doubt, Prof. Oquaye (Papa Ajasco) and his likes in the academic and political arenas would be envious and jealous of this piece. So what has Prof. Quaye been teaching his student at Legon all this time. Has the professor contributed to the devaluated standards of our university education, by his the non-factual views particularly in History, in the Department of History?. I can understand why the challenges in the academic world was too much for Prof. Oquaye so he ran into politics where, he can easily hide behind his academic qualifications and his pastorial duties as a so called 'the man of God' to make irresponsible, unintelligent and violent noises for his selfish and money conscious ends. His performance as Ghana Ambassador to India speaks for itself. Ghana is bigger than all Ghanaians. No Ghanaian is any bigger than Ghana. We may not be holding high academic decorations but we know our history so we cannot be fooled by people like Prof. Oquaye who sadly, has failed miserably to re-write the political history of Ghana. Ghanaians have given Prof. Oquaye free lectures or should I say, 'free education' on Political History of Ghana. Prof. Michael Oquaye (aka- Papa Ajasco)must now listen and learn. He has tested the waters and has realised that he needed more swimming lessons before plunging into the deep ends.

I've dealt with these people a couple of times. They have some level of bitterness when u beat them. Even in quizes, compettitons and even very unecessary games. Humans shouldnt live like that. You will loose sometimes and win sometimes. Looing shouldnt breed hatred and jealousy for the winner. They started hating Nkrumah and his tribe when he beat them.
When Gbedema helped Nkrumah win the 51 elections whilst he was in prison, they started hating Ewes. This has continued till date. They started targeting Fantis whilst Mills was President until his death. They now turned to Northerners because Mahama beat them. UP/NPP IS CLOTHED IN HATE, JEALOUSY, SELF-AGGRANDIZEMENT. Unfortunately, Ghanaians seem not to like them very much.

Rocky, which history books and who are the authors? I am happy I lived under Nkrumah's rule and very proud and happy to identify myself as one of his die-hard supporters and unalloyed admirers.Under Kwame's'dictatorship' Ghana saw unprecedented progress and development. If Ghana is a nation admired all over the world it is because of Osagyefo. The 'democrats' who have led Ghana have proved to be thieves and selfish politicians who expropriated state properties to themselves and left the majority poor Ghanaians poorer.I will be very happy to live under a dictator who ensures the well-being of all Ghanaians and not just a few.The legacies of Osagyefo's 'dictatorship' were peace, unity and development which governments which have ruled Ghana since his overthrow have destroyed. At least China has demystified the notion that it is only democracy which promotes stability and the economic well-being of human beings.
