Togbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia of Asogli, on Tuesday, appealed to parties in the 2012 election petition case to announce their acceptance of the Supreme Court verdict within 30 minutes after the ruling.
He said such a pronouncement would avert chaos and demonstrate the parties' commitment to peace in the country. Togbe Afede, President of the Volta Region House of Chiefs, said this at the third general meeting of the House in Ho.
He said the peace of the country was non-negotiable and urged the citizenry to accept the ruling of the Supreme Court.
“It is sad that everyone is calling and praying for peace. It is so sad that even the US is advising its citizens...but we must know that the peace of this country is non-negotiable,” Togbe Afede said. He said the country should be able to go through elections without fear and must not allow the ambitions of a few politicians to disturb the nation.
Togbe Afede said throughout his travels, he noted that investors preferred Ghana to other countries because of the country’s peaceful nature and urged the citizenry to uphold this value.
He appealed to chiefs to talk to the youth to be peaceful.
Togbe Afede said the Volta Regional House of Chiefs would settle all 29 cases before it by the end of 2014, to ensure peace in the region and the country.
Dr. Henry Seidu Daanaa, Minister for Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs now on a week’s working tour of the region, appealed to the Volta Regional House of Chiefs to resolve disputes in Anlo, Peki and Akpini.
He reiterated the importance of chieftaincy in the socio-economic development of the country and said the Ministry was addressing issues of membership and jurisdiction of chiefs. The House presented some gifts to Dr. Daanaa, who is billed to visit Ve, Gbi, Anfoega, Tapa , Aflao and Klikor Traditional Areas.

There has been a 5-4 split decisions in three cases- over-voting, absence of signature of presiding officers, voting without biometric. O course there was 9-0 in case of the other 3 grounds. If any of the three 5-4 decisions can be overturned Mahama will no longer be held duly elected. An appeal could get it overturned 6-5 for the petitioners. Two new judges must be added to the panel in case of a review. I hope you understand

Every Ghanaian will bear witness to the fact that after the voting various people at various places took part and witnessed the counting so there was no single complain any where after the first day. Even the following morning NPP scribes praised the conduct of the election and called it one of the best conducted by the EC. Later the same afternoon when the figures started favouring the NDC then the silly noise started, that there is rigging so the results should not be announced. In the history of this country no party has been treacherous like the NPP, I hope you know this for a fact. They are my people so I know them like my hands.They simply decided to go to court capitalizing on the wrong entries to make a case for the turning of the election in their favour. 2008 it was the same they did everything they could to change the results but God has not destined Nana Addo to be a president of this country On 2 ocasions they had to go to Manhyia for fresh results but it was fruitless. Were you aware of that ? No . Ask and you will be told. Do not give analogies that do not support the truth nor even explain anything sensible. Leave NPP where they are, for if you follow that party with your heart you will die young.You said some of the judges are very disappointing: which one of them. Note that if Akuffo Addo and Co had asked for a judicial review the Chief Justice would have added 2 SC judges to the panel Mahamahs fate could have been different. After all Atuguba voted to keep the job of his nephew who is an Executive Assistant to President Mahamah. What do you think of that. The major mistake the petitioners made was to allow Atuguba to remain on the panel. I saw this coming. It was in their right to have kicked him out. Lets exercise OBJECTIVITY and not let our political inclinations cloud our behavior.

Even as a layman I know there are several examples of judges making mistakes that lead to the release of even people on death row or other offenses. When noticed which is often immediate the police go after them and they are rearrested. the prisoners can't claim because the Judge made that error then they were not liable any longer.

We have heard the presenter of JOY NEWS FILE programme repeatedly using the word "split" in describing the results of the three areas where SC decisions were; 6:3 and/or the corrected figures of 5:4) as "split". The fact is that, 5:4 is not a split; it is a majority of 1. Likewise, the 6:3 for the other two areas where the decision were not unanimous, is not split but, rather, a majority of 3. So, to call the three as "split" decisions is mathematically wrong, if not and attempt to deride people's intelligence. All in all, the three areas were majority decision, period!
Perhaps, JOY ONLINE were trying to describe Boxing points awards in the same way as head counts of people. The two have mathematically different meaning.

In the United Kingdom, The verdict would have been orderly typed out for the president to present to the court.
For example, under each Heading, ie OVER VOTING, the list of the judges who voted against it would be listed on one side. Those who voted for it would also be listed on another side, all on One sheet, so the President of the panel will look professional and would not make silly mistakes that has exposed Atuguba to all the criticisms, bringing all their hard work to disrepute.
As it were, Justice Atuguba would take one sheet and read one Petition, listing all the names of who voted for what and who voted against what. Too many sheets of papers, he was going forwards and backwards reading out the names. Too messy!
Madam Chief Justice, it was a messy business no wonder Justice Atuguba made mistakes.
Please put plan in place to correct & modernise the way Judges present complex cases in court in future.
