I rather think that it is more of a situation in which these people now need Ghana to regain some sense of importance and native/racial pride.

There are few things more contemptible in the contemporary world than a gifted African - or for that matter any African, who ignores the deplorable circumstances of Africa. Then on the fickle pretext of seeking 'greener pastures', turns his/her back on the compelling need to resuscitate his/her own people from the crass conditions that we as a race of people find ourselves in.

The people who they have found it more rewarding to offer their expertise to, invariably show their characteristic ingratitude and bigotry sooner than later.

It is at such times, when these gifted Africans have either been used-up and misused or it is too late in their lives, that they begin to look towards or surreptitiously find their way back home.

As is evident, they often do not get the kind of grand-stand applause they expect on their 'grand return' home. It only at such times that they will wake up to the stark reality that material possessions are indeed worthless when it comes to being contrasted with personal and racial values, esteem and respect.

It is ok for such people to form a think-tank by which they can brainstorm on issues that they may wish to share with the poor country they had earlier abandoned. At this time they will again belatedly find out that the greater difficulty would be how to get the status quo to accept or employ their ideas.

Ghana is not in any dire shortage of ideas and appropriate expertise. What Ghana needs is the kind of people who can work towards getting rid of the kind of crooked and myopic civil servants, businessmen and politicians who have also colonized their country in the single pursuit of milking it dry to death for their selfish ends.

It does not seem to me that Ghanaian experts abroad, having become completely disoriented from the conditions at home, are the least qualified to handle the problems facing our country.

Even Justices appointed with overwhelming benefits including life salary give verdicts that set the nation on fire. There is lack of ethical character of leadership in the system. We need people with integrity and accountability spirit to lead. Let's pray for more Martin Amidus.

Kwesi Atta..........we have always had think-tanks in and outside Ghana since time in memorial. Some stayed in Ghana, some are still living abroad and some have returned home, all with great ideas. But some of course, contribute to debates/articles with the 'big', 'big', English 'lingo' which makes a lot of sense but, has contributed NOTHING to the positive development of our dear nation.

Most of our people educated abroad came back and some became Presidents and politicians etc. Are we to refer to them as think-thanks? Don't forget they also shouted from afar of being capable of running our nation better than others. Well, the results are there to see.

My question is, what happens to the mind of our so-called think-thanks in the diaspora, on reaching our shores? I will tell you what happens.....they change! They get away with not paying taxes etc. and live with the belief that nothing will happen to them in our country. (Think about it).

Kwesi, our problem is NOT going to be solved by the so-called think-tanks made up of doctors, professors etc. etc......dazzling ideas on this forum or from any kind of platform......from overseas.

What we need is a STRONG selfless, patriotic, efficient and an honest leader with integrity and above all COMMON SENSE, who believes in LAW and ORDER..............To create STRONGER institutions run by people with the same attributes to implement LAW and ORDER! Because strong institutions are created by strong leaders with the above attributes. (And not as suggested by Obama).

And these attributes can be harnessed from OUR OWN society, for the development of our dear nation. By this I mean tapping into all aspects of human resource of our country to include elders, chiefs, farmers, fishermen, market women with COMMON SENSE, with innovative ideas to be part of the think-tanks.

Most important of all, all these ideas of the think-tanks will come to NOTHING if they are not physically implemented. We need people with the 'can-do' spirit to take the bull by the horn and get things done! PERIOD!

Our education system must be overhauled to reflect our African heritage and build from there. We CANNOT be like those we are going around mimicking their lifestyles and aping around like them; with the belief that we will become like them.
NEVER!!!!! We need to get back to the drawing board and get to know who we really are and the purpose of our human existence as Africans before we can go any further with OUR OWN development.

Why do we fail and deprive our OWN people of achieving higher education if they fail a language alien to their heritage, culture and traditions?
Why? Are we not human enough for our own good?

Kwesi what you also have to realize is that the Malaysians, Singaporeans, French, Germans, Chinese, Indians etc. educate themselves in their own 'lingos', hence their development in their own pace.

The diasporeans can only help if they are patriotic enough, are not going to behave like stooges to foreigners, are not going to impose themselves and look down on our own citizens just because they studied abroad. And above all have to rid themselves of their slave-mentality, in order to see good in their God created fellow Ghanaians.

And by that, I mean the educated illiterates who will for example, suggest we build flyovers to alleviate congestion on our roads, without assessing the courses of the congestion on our roads...........all because they are all over Europe and the U.S. (Think about it).

Ghana is for all Ghanaians and NOT for the few educated illiterates, who see no good in their OWN fellow Ghanaians they refer to as uneducated.
The solution is in OUR OWN hands.

Education is not only about acquiring knowledge by means of somebody else's 'lingo'; there is more to it than that........and I hope the so-called think-tanks from the diaspora will agree with me.

If not, we will be debating this same subject until thy Kingdom come and be chasing our own tails forever! (Please don;t take it wrongly).

Finally Kwesi Atta, we need Ghanaians to come over to help....not AFROPEANS!

Accra- Ghana (PANA) -- Ghana's Supreme Court on Monday declared the Fast Track Court unconstitutional, virtually putting on hold the trial of several former ministers and government officials for various offences. The Court, by a 5-4 majority, upheld a motion brought before it by Tsatsu Tsikata, former chief executive of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), challenging the constitutionality of the Fast Track Court (FTC). In the past I have pointed out a few omissions/errors and sometimes, the length of the article itself, for which Paa Kwesi Mintah has often descended on you. When you sent this particular one around, I went through it and came back to you within an hour, because I thought there were some inaccuracies that needed to be corrected. In particular, l pointed out the very personal conversation with Chris’s sister which I knew was not wholly true and asked that you took that out.

When I woke up early this morning, the first thing I wanted to do was to check Ghanaweb, which I don’t usually do. To my horror, it is all there! Chris and I have been like brothers since we met in secondary school fifty years ago. For the first time in all those years, this is the first time I have read something about Chris that I cannot share with him and I am hoping and praying that neither he nor any member of his family reads it!

For instance, back in the 1980s and to some extent even today, when workers went home about 5:30pm and immediately switched on the kettles, cookers and televisions among others, power consumption in places like London, Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool, shot right up to the roof. The system Kofi developed, which formed part of his dissertation, was such that it would switch power from rural areas and some towns where the consumption was light, to these heavy use centres. From about 8pm when people would have settled down for dinner, the power would be switched back to the areas from which it was derived. He installed it all over the world – China, Australia, much of Europe and South America.

Kofi did a straight PhD at Imperial, skipping the MSc in those days, but some of the colleges of the University of London used to have this "Diploma" that was awarded to everybody who completed a higher degree. Imperial still awards it (DIC).

I have made some correction on the Kofi Pro thing. I intended to send a copy to Kofi, but I cannot do so with the bit about his sister. That is a big NO NO! I have known Kofi for a very long time. We all have our shortcomings. I know he helped his folks in many ways, but that should be a family matter! I have therefore taken it out. Please, please, please take it out of the article. Kofi is still battling with various health problems. He can contribute to any discussion on any subject under the sun, but something like that hitting him like a bolt, could create a major health problem for him - a return of the stroke or even heart attack.

Personally, I think this Think Tank thing should be non-partisan, non-governmental, so that whichever government that is in power can benefit from it. You do not want the situation where it gets so close to a sitting government that the next government does not want to touch it.

Partisanship is eating the last fiber of their brains. They dont know but will not include any brains from outside their party to address any issue to make sense. Just yesterday alone power went off and on ten times in some sections of the nation. Why ? They are unwilling to admit they dont know how to solve the problem but will not invite non partisan brains to help. You are right about the mind set of our policy makers. I rememeber back in the late 1980s, one of our school mates took Dr Gharban's invention that Kwesi wrote about all the way to the top echelons of the Electricity Corporation of Ghana. He even proposed a way of literally "seeing" everybody's level of consumption by a pressing a button, at a control centre.

Electricity Corporation has cash problems because there are milions of users who do not pay any bills because of fraudulent connections, mostly by junior staff of the corporation. This system was aimed at cutting down as much of that as possible. But they were not interested. Some people obviously benefit from it! In the end the few users who pay their biills faithfully continue to carry along the "free users".

I can write a book about my seventeen years of woes back in Ghana!

Some of us have decided to help our old secondary schools and quietly assist our village schools with books and other educational materials, construction of libraries, etc, and hope that these small gestures will brighten "little corners of Ghana."

Why do you always propose this outrageous Ministry of Diaspora Affairs? What are the various Ghana Embassies for? And what makes you a runaway from Ghana so valuable you deserve a whole Ministry to cater to your selfish needs? Do you pay income taxes to the govt of Ghana or Zambia? Think again and stop these lame proposals you occasionally spew out.

Cousin, perhaps you've heard about Think Tanks that exist elsewhere in the developed world and think such a setup can be replicated for the benefit of Ghana. Wrong. It'll never work!

I'll ask you to spend some time to find out about the numerous Think Tanks in the developed world and what they do.

I can fill you in on some of their functions. They all influence govt policy at the highest levels through lobbying, education and dissemination of research.

Think Thanks are far from "talk shop", as you may wrongly perceive them to be. The people they employ conduct thorough research of issues, examine social implications and responsiveness of ideas by sample polling; as well as publish papers for a target audience.

Your average Ghanaian does not possess such aptitude for painstaking research. Ours is the rapid results by-heart method of alleviating symptoms by throwing money on problems by acquiring loans.

Do you think the unsanitary conditions in Ghana needs a Think Tank policy suggestion or solution? NO. Common sense is what's lacking.

Ghana has one of the worst overbloated bureaucracies in the world. We have numerous ministries and titled bosses and their deputies and at all levels. Most are well-educated and know what can work for our nation. Yet they're all paralyzed by the culture of corruption. They're all willing participants in such immoral permissiveness that renders the governance system useless. Their primary objective is to acquire as much power and $$$ to entrench themselves socially to meet family obligations.

Any suggestions from any quarters to right the wrongs will upset the apple cart and such suggestions will not be welcomed.

If our paid leadership at all levels of governance cannot manage the cleanliness of our dear nation, then we cannot be amenable to Think Thank suggestion.

Foreign Think Tanks however influence Ghana in many ways. Their influence comes along with the loans offered by institutions such as Bretton Woods, IMF, World Bank, etc. Even the US Millenium Devt grant is the result of a foreign Think Tank research and influence.

Not all Think Tanks are political in nature. Some are financed by corporations with their own agenda to influence and win a big market share.

If our institutions of higher learning in Ghana do not have any recognized body of research, it should give you a clue of our inability to research and derive solutions.

Your over-reliance on people with academic letters is misplaced. Dr & PhD's do not possess the wherewithal to solve any of our numerous problems. We need selfless people with common sense and dedication. Ghana is already saddled with these Dr types at every position of leadership and authority and look at miserable results we have.

Cousin, please know that this is a public forum so cut out the private stuff. There are things about our relatives that may shed light on some of your articles but I hold back on those. Keep the personal stuff out. You know what I mean.

You always believe we can easily solve our problems and develop our country Ghana, by simply implementing other peoples' ideas here in Ghana.
I'm afraid to say that, it is only an utopia derived from the 'quick-fix' and the 'microwave' way of thinking by you lot.

Why not go tap into the minds of our wise men from our villages, townships and cities to see how best we can process, analyze, learn from and correct OUR OWN mistakes to benefit OUR OWN people.............. as done everywhere else in the developed worlds.

The best way to learn depends on how WE approach it in OUR OWN way. What works for one does not necessarily work for all.

I don't believe we can just copy other peoples' experiences (good or bad) in THEIR ENVIRONMENT to solve our problems.......................

We don't seem to get it! The era of Otto von whatever's think-tanks of legal experts would not necessarily work here in Ghana! WE have to think of OUR OWN and develop OUR OWN and make it work for us...............
