There is no smoke without fire. And remember, the Watergate scandal started leaked like this and was first revealed by a "Deep Throat" that nobody new. I feel sorry for the Asantes and all those who try to preserve outdated corrupt institutions like the chieftaincey institution for the sake of a bygone culture. Any chief that tries to portray faults image by using presidential jets is capable committing such crimes and therefore must be investigated. Chiefs who want to exercise political power and ride presidential jets must renounce their waning traditional positions and run for elections. We don't want duplications in our system.

We call on all those who support such people blindly to be forward looking because culture is not static. Asantehene like any other chief in Ghana is capable of committing the alleged crime and, therefore, must be investigated thoroughly.

The recent one was the usage of Ghana Airforce one to UK. Even if it was given to him, he should have exercised a high sense of judgement knowing the rumors about him that was gaining currency. Besides, many people who oppose him have their radars focused on him. Anything irregular that an Asantehene does will meet the attention and the media. I shall also suggest he stays out a little from politics if he wants to maintain his integrity.

You people are crying foul here for the asantehene being given the access to the presidential jet simply because the gesture was done by the NDC government. Interestingly, you people saw and heard nothing wrong and never protested for the 8 years that the NPP virtually made the same asantehene the Prime Minister of Ghana. He was given loans for water project by the NPP government; he attended G8 meetings under the NPP government; he received foreign dignitaries whereby the Ga chief, who happens to be the custodian of the seat of the presidency, was bypassed whenever a foreign dignitary visited the country. Indeed, non-asante Ghanaians and non-NPP Ghanaians saw to their chagrin how this asantehene guy was elevated above all the other traditional leaders of the country during Kuffuor's rule and yet we didn't hear some of you commenting; so, why now? Hypocrisy and double standards?

I am not that partisan Wrong is wrong and we must speak against it. The Prez Plane is for the office of the president and not any other purpose. It is not tro-tro. What should happen if Togbe Afedzi, Nandom Na, Nagbonwura who are all prominent traditional rulers ask for the use of the plane for their private business and their requests are declined? That is going to fan the general assumption that the Asantehene is seen as more important than the others. Let us perhaps buy another plane for the sole use of traditional leaders.
If Asantehene travels with the president"s entourage, there is nothing wrong with that.
If Asantehene was offered a loan for water project for people of all tribes that live in Ashanti region, what is wrong with that? Was it for his personal use?
It was not Kuffour who elevated the Asantehene ABOVE OTHER CHIEFS. I am not running away from the fact that the Asantehene is the most recognized traditional ruler in Ghana. That does not mean he should be allowed the use of Prez Plane for his private tours.
The tradition of receiving foreign dignitaries was not started by Kuffour. Your Idol Papa Jerry who is also a good friend of the Asantehene even continued and heightened it. Why is it that the Ga chiefs are not introduced to foreign dignitaries? They are involved in unreasonable chieftaincy disputes that there is no recognized Ga Manche. Have you cared to also find out why Mills did not go to any Ga chief's palace or invited any to the castle? Ask the Ga people for they can answer best. There is no hypocrisy or double standards here. Wrong is wrong.

The Asante Kingdom is the richest in Ghana and can even afford to buy a plane for their king. Asantehene is rich enough to charter a flight to London. Why Mahama decided to let him use the Prez Plane is JUST WRONG. It is a bad precedent.

It is interesting that the National House of Chiefs(NHC) was not able to stand by the Otumfuo or charge the Free Press with lying. All the NHC did was to condemn the journalist for publishing an investigative report and subtly intimidating him. I think the NHC is staking its reputation by their condemnation of the journalist and the Free Press. For far too long, Ghanaians have been intimidated by the institution of chieftaincy to the extend that heinous crimes like rape and murder commited by chiefs or their emissaries have been ignored by the public and even the police. This failure to prosecute has always been justified under the theory that "we don't want to bring the institution of chieftaincy into disrepute". We are now in the 21st century and in a democratic country where our constitution guarantees freedom of the press as well as freedom of speech. Any person who read the article in the Free Press will find that the allegations made were not general but very specific and supported by evidence. In such a situation it behoves the Attorney General or the local police to investigate and verify the truth or falsity of the paper's claim. After all, if presidents are not immuned from investigation and prosecution, why should chiefs. Ghana will be well served if corrupt chiefs are removed from the "reputable" institution of chieftaincy. This is the only way the institution which we all cherish as cultural and traditional custodians can maintain its reputation. Rather than attempting to stifle freedom of the press, I believe the NHC must encourage the chiefs to lead exemplary lives worthy of emulation. The NHC must also hold corrupt chiefs accountable as it appears nobody is holding powerful chiefs accountable. If a thorough investigation confirms the Free Press's story, what then will the NHC say. For the NHC to keep its own reputation and those of the chiefs, it must always wait till facts are established before making statements such as it has published. On the other hand, if after a thorough investigation, it is established that the allegations against the Otumfuo and the judges are false, the laws of Ghana provide remedies for the injured parties. Otumfuo and the judges can sue the paper for damages for libel. It is however interesting that I have not yet seen or read any public denial from the Otumfuo or the judges. Let truth and the Rule of Law guide our nation.
