The bio-metric verification for payment of wages works in some institutions in Ghana. It can be implemented.

However, let us look at other policies inhibiting people from working elsewhere for the day when one has the capacity and strength to continue.

For instance, if I am on wage, I could effectively do a job in 4 hours, close and look for another job for another 8 hours and increase my daily wage. This is far better than keeping someone at post with no relevant assignments and compelling him/her to stay on lazying about.

None they all have execuses to go away from the office. Field workers not ever wakeup in the mornings and still get pay by the government.

If the government makes promises and do not fulfill them, delays in paying allowances that are due to workers but hurriedly pay hugely increased salaries, car loans, rent allowances when teachers and nurses are not paid their peanuts, why should workers and union leaders be held responsible for strikes? Are some MPs not ready to boycott(STRIKE) on some issues if some payments are not made into their accounts? Tony Aidoo should reason up. When was the last time his salary was delayed? How much did he pay for the cars he literally "STOLE" when Mills was in power? No reasonable Doctor, teacher, nurse etc will want to go on strike if treated well by their employers. Tony should rather ask government to do the right thing. Various governments, both NPP/NDC have taken workers for a ride for too long.

In the west when chose to lay down your tools and refuse to work (strike) you forfeit your wages. Strictly no work no pay. Therefore, read,learn and understand that, it is legal to embark on industrial action, but if you choose to do so, don't expect your employer to pay you. If you were an employer, will you pay your employees when they refuse to work? think. By the way Dr Tony Aidoo is British-trained.

I want to see any publications that Tony Aidoo made when he was a lecturer at Cape Coast University and was paid research and book allowances. If he did no research and publications, he should pay them back and stop spewing out all this nonsense. Well, perhaps he wants Mahama to hear him.

It is always sad to see some ignorant Ghanaian revert to insult because he has no idea as to the subject of discussion and no contribution to make to it. It is worse when a Ph.D holder, whose general level of political education and understanding of issues ought to be above average, descends to that level. As a nation and a people we shouldn't have to go through these silly strikes - some of which are politically motivated - which actually resolve nothing. If we didn't pay doctors a fuel allowance, junior doctors wouldn't strike for it; if we didn't pay research allowance to university teachers (for research which doesn't benefit student, faculty or country), university teachers wouldn't strike for it. The government should use the courts to declare these strikes illegal. Or use the courts to be able to dock the pay of striking workers or get the unions which declare these strikes to pay them for the duration of a strike. It is a bloody ridiculous situation which is not sustainable. But first our government must end the nonsense of every messenger in the civil service and every errand boy in politics and every special assistant and MP feeding on government fuel, etc. Let's make a start on walking the talk.

Do workers have to wait for so long before they are put on the correct pay scale? Does the president and parliament in Canada doubles the Salaries of MPs, co-sign for their car loans and give them hefty rent allowances as it is done by the government of Ghana. Do you think people are interested in strikes just for the love of it? Why should government not play with workers on a leveled field and fulfill its part of the obligations? Labour unions in this country have made very little use of the 'political muscle' most labour organizations around the globe have. Their leaders have sold out their interests to the govt of the day.
The irony though is that the govt has not found innovatives ways to use the tremendous economic advantage it currently enjoys as the single largest employer to rein in many of the disparate groups like JUSSAC that have managed to hold the govt for ransom. With teeming graduate unemployment, should the govt have given in to demands for payment such as clothing allowance for a bunch of corrupt and inefficient officials who work within our judicial set-up? As it is now, any amorphous group can rise up and issue an ultimatum,and the govt will cave in. How many of these unions,if they were put to the test, how many of these unions would be able to support their membership financially,to embark on a prolonged industrial action? None, that I can think of!
I therefore see Tony Aidoo`s call not only as a useful approach to rationalize the labour unions in the country,but also an effective way to bring some sanity into an artificially fractured labour market.
Would this country not be making some meaningful progress with this belated idea of tri-partism so the govt can get some control over labour costs,and thus reduce our spiralling budget deficits?

Strikes are always the last action of any organized labour in the world. This good for nothing Dr. he calls himself was not ashamed to buy a car of high value cheap because of his position in the corrupted government so he can go out to condemn legitimate strike for survival. Without the strikes how would the government listen to their grievances? If the government can go out to pay dubious judgement debts then I see no reason why striking workers should not be paid after all they are driving their grievances home. In countries the world over where there is "organised labour" i.e. labour unions, labour laws provide that when unionised workers go on industrial action, they are not paid for their self-imposed absence from work.

It appears that only in Ghana we have a situation where striking workers still have full pay for no work done. The 3 week doctors' strike during which time they collected their full salaries is a classic example of this drain on our economy and it is rather curious that workers and their labour unions appear not to be aware of these provisions. If the country also lacks such laws which are recognised by the international labour organisation (ILO), then we really have been losing a lot of money over the years from strike action alone. That cannot be allowed to continue and must change.

Unions must pick up the tab for any industrial action - pure and simple. Apart from it saving the country a lot of money we don't have, it might also make workers think twice before embarking on strike action and hopefully allow all sides in an industrial dispute to explore ALL alternative avenues before embarking on what has become - the first, rather than the last resort.

The way it is now, employers / government are prone to blackmail from everybody for even silly reasons (like asking for RESEARCH ALLOWANCE for RESEARCH THEY DO NOT PERFORM, for BOOK ALLOWANCE FOR BOOKS THEY DO NOT BUY). The workers pay union dues monthly and it is this fund that union bosses must use to pay the employers they goad to embark on strikes. Doctors go on strike and leave patients to die in hospitals but still collect their salaries. It is up to government and employers to tell the unions that we've had enough of this nonsense, and won't put up with it anymore.

In most countries, this nonsense is not practiced. You reap what you sow workers, wake up. its only in Ghana that district union executive can call declare a national strike with impunity.

Tony what you should be advising on is how we can have a 79 type clean up without a coup? in a society with a very high level of unemployment amonst young people why are we still paying salary to you Tony to perform at 30% the capacity of an un employed graduate! why should we put a system which can only work efficiently under an old man because he is linked to the ruling party!! Tony please keep your ideas to yourself as you are part of the problem, not sure you can contribute to the solution.
