When I was a graduate student at Princeton, in my first year, I visited Bronx where my sister was living in the same apartment complex with Prof Kofi Awoonor. At the time, he was lecturing part time at Columbia and pursuing his final ph.d. dissertation. What I remember about him is that he would often speak FANTI to my sister encouraging her to be closer to his (Kofi's) wife rather than the other gullible, gossipy Ghanaians in the same complex because he found my sister articulate and educated. I spoke often with him in Fanti and he was full of excitement whenever Ghana came up. Even at that time he did not look that old; I am surprised that he was 78. May he rest in peace - those who knew him up close really considered him classy and he fitted into many Ghanaian ethnic groups because he spoke so many Ghana languages.... it was always difficult to pin him as an Ewe. His English was nothing like an ewe accent!!! Folks - Kofi was no tribalist. He might have been an Ewe nationalist. I found him more Ghanaian than most people; I can say for a fact that he was neithe an ewe-phobic nor akan-phobic, if there are such things. He was simply a Ghanaian Nationalist!!

Some thugs and punks heard and Rawlings was a model for them. One Fante song I remember from my primary schools days talks about the mystery of death.

The song translates roughly like this:

"I do not know where, how and when I shall die
Shall it be at home or a strange place?
Peacefully or through an accident
It (death) remains a mystery to me"

Ghanaian musician, Kojo Antwi, in his song ADINKRA, picks up the theme when he sings that we are literally saying goodbye to life as we go about our daily chores. His only prayer, since he accepts man's mortality is that he does not meet his end in an accident in the middle of nowhere.

As Ghanaians mourn the untimely and tragic departure of Professor Kofi Awoonor, our thoughts must not only be on the inevitability of death but also on the mystery of death as spoken of by the songster. Do we ever see death coming? Some certainly do.

American Civil Rights leader, Martin Luther King, Jnr. might have sensed his end coming when just a day before he died, he gave a speech, in which at the very end of the speech he reacted to threats to his life and might have predicted his transition to eternity. Kindly read what he said:

"Well, I don't know what will happen now. We have got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn't matter with me now. Because I have been to the mountain top. And I don't mind. Like anybody, I would like to have a long life. Longevity has its place. But I am not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And he's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I have looked over. And I have seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we - as a people - will get to the Promised Land. And I'm happy tonight. I am not worried about anything. I am not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord"

The speech was delivered on April 3, 1968. A few hours later, on April 4, 1968, as Luther King, Jnr, stood at a balcony of a motel in Memphis, Tennessee, with aides including Andrew Young and Jesse Jackson, he was assassinated. He was only 39. Did he see death coming?

Did Prof. Awoonor who lived to be 78 see death coming as it has been reported that he had indeed, a day before his murder at the hands of terrorists, spoken about death and how he did not fear to die.

The circumstance of his death is indeed a sad one. The great writer that he was, he had travelled to Nairobi, Kenya, to participate in a writer's forum aimed at inspiring children to develop interest in books.

He found himself at the famous Westgate Mall in the city and was "sitting his somewhere", minding his own business when the terrorists struck and killed as many 65 innocent people who had not offended the terrorist group.

And if these terrorists really have a just cause, not driven by bigotry and false religion, they would have found in him a defender of their cause, since all his life he had stood up for freedom and justice.

And to think of it, Prof. Awoonor died on, of all days, September 21, 2013, when as has been his forte he would have been celebrating in his own way, the 104th birthday of his political mentor, the man he believes like many of us do, gave his all to Ghana - Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

For every one who considers himself a follower of the ideals of Nkrumah, Prof Awoonor was the chief defender and promoter of the life and works of Nkrumah; a passion that has defined and determined his political alliances and choices.

His well-written essays about the role of imperialism and foreign interference in the under development of Africa, particularly those on the machinations of the CIA that resulted in the coup d'état of 1966 against Nkrumah, point to his solid anti-imperialist stance.

Many students of Literature and African traditions are bound to remember him for his many literary works from the times he wrote under the name George Awoonor Williams to when he went back to his roots and used his African name Kofi Awoonor.

Today's generation, which only sees politics through the prism of democratic governance – the NPP-NDC definition of our times – and have no inkling about military rule, may be justified to remember Prof. Awoonor for his times as Chairman of the Council of State.

But those who know will do well to tell the story of his struggle against the military dictatorship of Kutu Acheampong that led to his trial and imprisonment for several years. His book on his experiences in prison-THE HOUSE BY THE SEA- is a narration about his tribulations and great sacrifice for freedom and justice.

Some of his political critics have always accused him of making his ethnic origins, his "Eweness", the pivot of his existence but his career, his politics and aggregate contribution to Ghana establish his true credentials and identity as a proud Ghanaian and Pan-Africanist.

Stronger is even the point that the modern nation state as we know - Nigeria, Ghana, Togo etc. are creations of colonial powers and many of our countries only came into existence in the 50s. Even after 50 years of nation-state we are still struggling to become citizens of the new nations as shown by voting patterns in many African elections. Even our names, mine for instance - BLAY- tells where I come from whether I find myself in Cote d'Ivoire or Ghana.

What great leaders like Nkrumah and Nyerere did was not to ignore and dismiss our ethnicity but present a greater vision and ideology and development agenda that could pull all of us together into a Ghana and a Tanzania. Nkrumah even faced a greater challenge when he dreamt about a United States of Africa.

Professor Awoonor may have traced his roots to his native Ewe just as we all do, but he was a true Ghanaian patriot who saw all ethnic groupings part of the bigger Ghana.

I recall a brief encounter at the Ghana International Press Centre when the two of us got into conversation about a book by former Member of Parliament Kosi Kedem that had a narration about the secessionist movement in the 50s for parts of the Volta Region to be delinked to join Togo(And just for the records, he always communicated with me in impeccable Fante)

Professor Awoonor had no kind words for the notion of secession then and today. He was critical of those behind the secessionist movement, even though the protagonists were long gone from this life; and argued strongly that Ghana's development laid in our unity from Paga to Aflao.

Yes, this nation is going to mourn Prof. Awoonor but I think the greatest honour will be to remember him for his varied contribution to Ghana all his life. His funeral should not be just another funeral, another state burial - which he deserves - but an occasion for reflection on what drives the Awoonors of the world to seek to serve their motherland and Africa.

And as a spirit of the times, let his passing away and related activities go the extra mile to promote national unity.

He may have belonged to the CPP and later the NDC but because his greatness and contribution were not defined solely by his political associations but by a greater sense of commitment to the Ghana project, let as mourn him as a Ghanaian patriot - nothing more, nothing less.

Farewell Prof. Awoonor.
