Three Lebanese nationals facing trial in Nigeria for having links to Islamist militant group Hezbollah appeared in court on Monday to give their closing arguments.

The three suspects were arrested between May 16 and May 28 in the North’s biggest city Kano. A raid on the residence of one of the Lebanese had uncovered arms and ammunition which Nigerian authorities said were targeted at facilities of Israel and Western interest in Nigeria.

While on the witness stand, two of the suspects said they were forced to make false statements while in detention after their arrests that they were part of Hezbollah. They also added that for 14 days they were interrogated by Israeli's Mossad.

Mustapha Fawaz, one of the Hezbollah suspects, said they wanted to make an example of them so that Hezbollah will not think of carrying attacks in Nigeria and Africa.

The defence counsel, in its closing arguments, denied the Lebanese nationals' involvement with the terrorist group, the counsel to the defence, Ahmed Raji, said.

"It has been shown that there is no case against them," he said. "Whatever grey areas they have explained in their testimonies and most importantly we have shown that they don't know anything about the arms and the only gun found in Amigo has license, which is a hunting gun, they have a license for it," he told Reuters Television.

Raji also added that he is delighted for the speedy trial which is unique for criminal cases in the West African country.

Mustapha Fawaz solicited for his closed businesses in Nigeria's capital, Abuja to be re-opened due to millions of dollars already invested. A motion will be adopted when Nigeria's judiciary resumes from its break in September.

The Lebanese suspects, Mustapha Fawaz, Abdullah Tahini and Talal Roda were transferred to Kuje prisons from the custody of the State Security Service on Friday. Authorities believe there has been a growing involvement of al-Qaeda-linked foreign jihadists in Nigeria's insurgency.

Talal Rodo, one of the three Lebanese standing terrorist trial in Abuja, on Friday, admitted knowledge of the existence of the arms in a bunker in Kano.Mustapha Fawaz and Abdallah Thahani are the two other Lebanese standing trial over terrorism charges bordering on arms hoarding and illegal importation of firearms.

Rodo, the third accused person, had opened his defence before Justice Adeniyi Ademola, of the Federal High Court Abuja.

While testifying, he further admitted being a resident at No. 3 Gaya Road in Kano where the arms were discovered.

According to him, he was drafted to service the arms on the instruction of the owner of the building, Abdulhassan Tahir.

“Tahir told me that those arms were licensed and I had no reason whatsoever not to believe him.

“I was also afraid to report to the police because I felt it might be a risk for me” Rodo said.

Earlier, Ademola granted an application filed by the three accused persons seeking transfer from the custody of the State Security Service (SSS).

In his submission, the judge held that “since there is no objection from the prosecution, the court orders that the three accused persons be taken to Kuje Prisons.”

Mr. Ahmed Raji (SAN), counsel for the accused alleged that his clients were being further subjected to interrogation by foreign agents at the SSS custody during the pendency of the case.

“My clients have made the request based on the fact that they are afraid to stay in the SSS custody to give evidence in defence of their case.

“The First and the Second accused persons are afraid to stay in the SSS custody any longer” Raji said before urging the court to order their transfer to a neutral place and allow them to come to court with a free mind and express themselves in the evidence they shall give before it.

Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal Court in Abuja on Friday dismissed a bail application of three Lebanese nationals accused of terror links.

The trial of Abdallah Thaini, Mustapha Fawaz and Talal Roda will resume on July 29. The three men were kept in detention on the grounds of national security. Justice Ademola pronounced that: “the allegations brought against you are grave and it is the responsibility of the court to ensure justice is done in the matter”.

The three Lebanese suspects are standing trial for criminal conspiracy and unlawful importation of prohibited fire-arms. They are being charged in connection with a large cache of arms discovered at a residence in Kano in May. It was reported at the time that the three men intended to use the arms against Israel’s interests in Nigeria and were working with the Lebanon-based, Shiite Hezbollah movement.
NIGERIA: Lebanese suspects refused bail

Presenting the bail application, defence lawyer Robert Clark argued that his clients should be considered innocent until proven otherwise. He said the charges against them were weak and they had no links to the arms cache. Clark further pointed out that a Nigerian senator, Ali Ndume, facing charges of funding Islamist radical movement Boko Haram, had been released on bail.

But for the prosecution, Simon Egede urged the court to rule out submissions from the defence. Egede argued that the accused applicants confessed to have had military training back in Lebanon as freedom fighters and for working for the Hezbolla movement in that country.

Nigerian security operatives announced on May 28 the discovery of a major arms cache in a Lebanese-owned property.

The cache included: anti-tank weapons, anti-tank mines, a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) and RPG missiles, AK-47s, sub-machine guns and grenades.

The Nigeria's State Security Service (SSS) said the weapons were intended for use against "Israeli and Western interests" and highlighted Hezbollah’s involvement. A Joint Task orce (JTF) press release said the arms discoveries were “not accidental, but the outcome of an ongoing robust counter terrorism investigation”. That investigation had confirmed the “existence of a Hezbollah Foreign Terrorist Cell in Nigeria” and had featured several arrests before the discovery of the cache.

Of those arrested, Mustapha Fawaz is a prominent business and supermarket owner in Kano. Abdallah Thaini owns the Wonderland Amusement Park in Abuja.

The arms cache discovery was followed by much speculation in the press on alleged terror links involving Lebanese-Nigerian nationals, Hezbollah and Nigerian radical Islamist movement Boko Haram,

The chairman of the Lebanese community in Kano, Tahir Fadallah, sued a newspaper over erroneous allegations that he had been arrested. In a statement issued on behalf of the Lebanese in Kano, Fadallah stressed: “We will not accept, assist or associate with any criminal activity by any individual or group”.

In my family, for example, my parents are split between Islam and Christianity and so are my cousins wider family. I have a female cousin who teaches the Koran. All my brothers are Christians except one, but even so, one of his children is a pastor. We just surprised my Muslim brother this year by paying for him to go to Mecca. Here a true story by one of my Ghanaian tenants here in London, Kofi, not his real name, (a very nice and responsible guy, one of the best tenants I ever heard), told me about his experience in Lebanon, a few years back before he came to London. He said when he was in transit in Lebanon, he and some few Ghanaians were herded in one room like animals after work, and were treated very badly at work by those Lebanese. He said, his experience in Lebanon has made him lost respect for Lebanese in particular and Arabs in general. That was a very honest story from an eye witness to the way these Arab treats us in their countries, yet some African would still out their neck to defend these evil Arabs who has no respect for Africans.

Look at how they are importing arms into Nigeria. Tell, can any African foreigners do same in Lebanon or any Arab countries and live to tell the tale? Hell No! Wake up Africans and seek the ENEMIES within before it is too late.

Why have the security agencies not arrested him to substantiate or corroborate his obviously unfounded allegations which are either being fed to him by Britain who for obvious reasons, have also come out with the same unsubstantiated allegations or by his local roast-plantain seller.

First of all I will comment on what I want to comment on and not what you want me to comment on.

Secondly, weighed against the amount of arms imported into Nigeria by those who you claim are Arab Hezbollah brothers, the amount of arms imported into Nigeria or any other country by your slave masters is like 10,000% more so whats your problem and if it is by the number of arms that one has that makes him or her a terrorist, then who is the greater terrorist.

Thirdly if you have visited so many countries as you claim, then why are you still so ignorant? How come the exposure to many different cultures and countries did not manage to free you from the psychological ills that slavery and colonialism inflicted on Africa?

Fourthly, I am not an Arab, nor a terrorist, nor a Moslem, nor a leech on anybody. I am an African who lives in Africa where God in His utmost wisdom, created and planted me. If I were to be an African who has turned his back on the monumental problems of Africa and had rather opted for the more comfortable and opportunistic option of living in the UK on a more wealthy economy built on the blood of hundreds of millions of African saves, then of course, I would surely qualify and consider myself to be a leech.

Fifthly, as a Ghanaian, the tag of terrorism is real for me purely in terms of those who planned, financed and strategized the terrorist activities against the govt and people of Ghana in the sixties. As far as I am concerned, those are the kind of terrorists we must be watching out for. They dont wear kaftans or turbans. They wear coat suits and neckties with Rolex watches.

Sixthly, I am even more surprised - or is it shocked that in spite of the fact that you can read and write, you still dont know who is sucking the blood of Africans. Who has benefited most from our cocoa, manganese, bauxite, gold, diamonds, rubber, cheap electricity, state industries and our oil in the past 100 years?

When you wake up each morning, look in your mirror and ask yourself who the blood-suckers and leeches of Ghana and Africa are. Perhaps that might help you to begin to think properly.

Seventh, I am not religious in any style or manner and personally I dont give a hoot about Islam because apart from making a lot of noise in our neighborhoods during early morning worship, they have not willfully harmed me, my ancestors or anybody I know.

What I do give a damn about, is that religion that enslaved hundreds of millions of Africans and held many more Africans in abject conditions of colonial dictatorship for several centuries. A member of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP), James Kwabena Bomfeh also known as Kabila has described as “uninspiring” President John Mahama’s address at the 68th UN General Assembly held in New York.

In his observation, the President, in the face of terrorist attacks in Africa, had the best opportunity to forcefully state Ghana’s position on terrorism but rather chose to lament over the country’s domestic problems at the world stage.

Kabila made this remark on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Friday.

President Mahama in a 15-minutes address at the UN General Assembly Thursday called for economic partnerships that can help transform African economies into self-sustaining entities.

He also rallied fellow world leaders against terrorism because "the world cannot succumb to blackmail terrorists".

In his quest to address the unemployment situation in the country, President Mahama disclosed the creation of the Youth Jobs and Enterprise Development Fund to provide young people with entrepreneurial skills and funds to establish businesses.

But Kabila maintains that the President’s entire speech was "mediocre" and lacked a global perspective.

According to him, comparing speeches made by Ghana's first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah to that of President Mahama, one can presume that something is fundamentally wrong.

He blamed the Presidents’ speech writers for not being up to the task because "John Mahama expresses himself far better when speaking extempore but when it comes to speeches, he is very bad".

Conceding that the issue of unemployment is of great importance, Kabila believes he [Mahama] chose the wrong platform to make his plans known.

"Of what importance is the issue of unemployment in Ghana to world leaders at the UN General Assembly? The President should have reserved the domestic issues and spoken more about pressing issues like terrorism" he stressed.

Kabila said of all the speeches delivered by Ghana’s presidents at the UN General Assembly, President Mahama’s is the "most uninspiring".

The President went to UN and talked about our economy. These are the kind of things Charles Sam must talk about. Not cheap talk about “Government of Ghana must be extra vigilante and have a very strong intelligence gathering system to profile and monitor the activities of terrorist elements in the West African country”.
The governments of the U.S., Netherlands, France, U.K., Australia, Canada, the European Union and Israel interests are different from Ghanaian interest.
Is it not these countries who rob us of our Natural resources?
Is it not these countries that let Kwame Nkrumah down?
Who is funding Mr Sam’s “One Nation Programme”? What is its mission statement and what is it going to achieve for Ghana.

However i disagree with views based on ignorance . Ghannaians troops in Mali are on peace keeping and not there to fight terrorist.
