This is just a case of "Business gone wrong" as a result of poor planning and miscalculations" It happens all the time to many who would buy an old car for example(off the road in America) and establish transportation business in Ghana. Woe unto the family member who agrees to run the business. The car is old and the roads are bad, what do you expect? You are not paying any wages to him and you are making phone calls for him to "do this, do that etc) I do not think Mrs Afeku and her husband are bad people who planned and defrauded the said victim. I think both parties must accept some responsibilities for their wrong calculations, thinking profits from the business could pay for all the money invested after paying the employee including the defendants.

Put politics aside, we are talking about "justice" The complainant knows the defendant very well, Mrs Afeku is most probably honest person that is why the complainant could trust them with such huge amount of money and that is why she was trying to work part time even though she was an MP. There are many in America, if some one would provide them free housing they would come back home. Mrs Afeku saw it is an opportunity to go back home, she is not a criminal who planned and defrauded the victim. Many Ghanians have made similar mistake in the past. We laugh at them when their plan fail and they return to America. We would say "kwasea, this stupid plan cannot sustain you for even 3 months" The judge, I can per sieve has never lived outside Ghana, she is home made. How can she get it right when she has to imagine the live in America and combine it with what happened in Ghana in order to arrive at a just conclusion? The complainant failed to do his homework well before undertaking such a huge business venture, he should probably have paid for the advise of a good consultant before going ahead. She should blame himself and take part of the responsibility.

This same cathrine afeku was also indicted in the auditor general's report of 2008 for forging documents to steal a tata pickup to run her election campaign. I'm surprised she didn't get a very long jail term in addition to refunding the money giving that a mobile thief was recently given a 10-year jail term. Our animal farm-justice system needs to be abolished and a true one put in place before Ghana descends into a complete state of anarchy.

In as much as I share the view that the case against Madam Afeku is not palatable, It must be pointed out that it is purely a civil and not a criminal matter. Being a purely civil matter, which happens sometimes in business transactions, and cannot, in my opinion, be a basis for disqualification as a Minister.

Having said that, her conduct raises morale issues. The failure of the Afeku's to respect the decision of the court to refund the money with interest, leading to an application for attachment, smacks of bad faith thereby putting the integrity and credibility of Madam Afeku on the line. That for me, is area where the Appointment's Committee of Parliament must grill her on in the interest of the nation and not on party lines. My views. Thanks.
