Not unlike Nkrumah,did he not accurately predict the shame and 'disaster' that has befallen the NPP? Why does he persist in holding himself out as a member of a political organization that views him with deep suspicion? would he not be better off if he aligned himself with other "progeressives" within the country? I find it somewhat perplexing that he would preface such a beautiful and well-written piece with all these unnecessary disclaimers. In a way, Arthur Kennedy seems to go out his way to provide his detractors,particularly those within the NPP,with the 'ammunition' to attack him. Frankly speaking, this "motromodwo"(one foot in,one foot out) posturing he often follows, is not going to enhance his political career!

for Ghana, Africa, and all oppressed peoples worldwide, he will remain confused and continue to waddle in myopic and tribalistic political party ponds, his all too-late acknowledgement of Nkrumah's leadership prowess notwithstanding. Were it not for the many attainments of Nkrumah, Arthur Kennedy would certainly not have been educated from the elementary level to the university level where he, at one point, led the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS).

Kennedy's five-point preamble are merely his ill-advised opinion, and have nothing to do with reality. The fact of the matter is that Kwame Nkrumah had no desire or value for self-adulation. Those unimportant statues of his were, among other reasons, his attempt to unite the whole newly-independent nation under his banner in the war against colonialism and the ensuing neo-colonialism. Like the Chinese, he had discovered that the ultimate aim of any colonial or neo-colonial power was to obtain the colonized country's raw materials dirt-cheap or free, use them to solve its unemployment and other social problems, and dump the transformed finished product from the raw materials in the colonized country at exorbitant prices. At that pace, it would be thousands of years, if ever, before the colonized country could even begin to stand on its own feet. The statues, the so-called one-party state, the unpalatable Preventive Detention Act for those attempting to derail the new freedom train -- all of these were necessary elements to achieve rapid development in a newly independent nation. Who would have thought that modern China, barely ten (10) years older than Ghana, would have become such a great economy in the 21st century, second only to the United States?! That was what Nkrumah was trying to achieve. The sad part of all this is that the enemies of Ghana and Africa knew that Nkrumah and China were on the right path. China fought extremely hard ideologically and pragmatically to resist the reactionary elements both at home and abroad, and is now reaping the benefits. If China should cash in all the debt owed her by the U.S. right now, the whole American economy would collapse. Yet reactionary elements in Ghana and abroad so blinded the vision of many Ghanaians that they could not see beyond the statues and bought into the false rhetoric of the so-called evils of the one-party State spewed by the Western press led by Britain and the United States. This led to the CIA-engineered coup d'état that toppled Nkrumah's government on February 24, 1966. The prolonged result is what is extant in Ghana and Africa today ... and still, we refuse to learn!

I am not sure what is considered in grading the Leaders of African States. But, no matter the criteria, I think Paul Kagame of Rwanda has demonstrated that type Leadership that should have earned him the MO IBRAHIM Prize.

Paul Kagame's SUCCESS STORY gives some of us HOPE for the Continent. And any Leader who could take a WAR-TORN Country such as Rwanda and turn it around on ALL FRONTS in less than a decade as Kagame has done must be celebrated.

In my Opinion, Paul Kagame won the MO IBRAHIM Prize even though he was not so declared.

Even if Nkrumah was alive we couldn't unite Africa. Those speeches and visions of his were like a mirage. Africans cannot wean themselves off the White man and no one need a rocket scientist to tell him/her that. Even as we speak, how united are we in Ghana? How often do we hear, Ashantis are evil, Ewes are thieves etc, etc? Imagine how we vote. It is purely on tribal lines which is having bad effect on the nation as a whole.

Africa, at the time of Nkrumah, cannot unite and I careless who says what. If you are among the Arabs they will tell you point plank that you are not even a human and imagine forging an alliance with such people. Impossible. Ghanaians should concentrate of finding a better government to give them hope and stop fooling themselves of what Nkrumah said some half century ago. If he was alive, he will still be depending on the Whites. Why was he in bed with the Russians?

Ghanaians and Africans in general, must be honest and respect the rule of law without that we will scream, wail and do whatever but there will be no change.

Ghanaian history as portrayed by the likes of Prof. Adu Boahen was one-sided, myopic and very limited in depth and scope.

You are likely to learn more about Ghanaian and African history including our traditional kings, leaders etc, from the past from the British library and books on anthropology at the library at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland than you would ever read from a Ghanaian or African historian. As a fellow academic, I seriously question the depth of the research that went into the writings of people like Adu Boahen.

As to the issue of leadership as Arthur K is looking at it, I agree with most of what he is saying and am glad he sees a lot from Nkrumah's speech. I only wish he could see more from his DEEDS as well. His attempt to please the NPP (and Danquah/Obetsebi lamptey factions) by starting off with irrelevant issues like the PDA is to me unfortunate.

Perhaps Arthus K would care to write or open up for discussion another topic around Nkrumah's performance and style of governance. Let me remind him at by 1954, Nkrumah's CPP had nearly all the seats in the legislature, and by the time of our first Republic, he had a majority which her could have used to change the Ghana constitution and to institute a ONE PARTY State.

His majority was overwhelming and in my view the Danquah opposition created the atmosphere for what happened afterwards. Arthur K might care to read "AFRICA MUST UNITE" IN WHICH AS FAR BACK AS 1963, NKRUMAH MADE IT CLEAR HIS OPPOSITION AND RELUCTANCE TO INSTITUTE THE PDA despite continuous provocation by the opposition and pleadings from his party.

By the way a worst form of the PDA is currently being practiced by the US, Britain and other western powers with impunity and I am yet to read any criticism from the likes of Arthur K. I too do not like a lot of the adulation, and certainly condemn excesses in Nkrumah's (just like other governments before, after him, and NOW). However I do not think those issues should feature in this otherwise good reflection on African leadership.

Finally I should add that nearly 7 years ago now I told Arthur K he was a leader in the 'Nkrumaist mold' in my view. I also suggested he read the likes of Nkrumah and Bill clinton's autobiography which had just been published.

He was not best pleased with my suggestions then, having been 'bought over the the US Republican party which as we have all just witnessed, are more keen on wrecking the US economy and with it, the rest of ours as well rather than work in the interest of the many. I am glad he has recently found an identity with Nkrumah. However i very much doubt if the core membership of his party will see eye-to-eye with his sentiments expressed here.

He is right, isn't it disappointing that presidents Kufuor and Rawlings have not even been shortlisted for the Mo Ibrahim prize for leadership after serving their numerous terms as Ghana president? It does not however mean that Africa lacks leadership at this moment- I rather admire Paul Kagame of Rwanda and believe he is doing a fine job, but is not currently qualified for consideration for the award.

I have never read anywhere that the NPP has denied the role of Dr Nkrumah in Africa or Ghana. The fight has always been about dictatorial behaviour and the reduction of institutions to 'one man show'. What happened in those times would not have been tolerated this time too. Look at how Kufuor was taken to the cleaners for instituting an award where he received a gold medal. Imagine the outcry if he were to have erected statues of himself everywhere; if he had asked that he be put on our currency and postage stamps? Imagine how he would have been condemned if he were to get school children to compare him to the Messiah who never dies and never tell lies? I believe that where there were excesses, we should condemn them but where he succeeded, we should praise.

We are where we are as a country. Our history should be there to gide our present and future conduct. It should not be used to divide us.

If we do not come together as a nation, we should forget development. Ghana is split down the middle and those who are enlighthened should lead the forgiveness of the wrongs of history. They should not continue to use that to divide.

The issue of the DRC crisis and Rwanda is as complex as the Syrian crisis which has wider dimensions and I would argue in the case of the latter that the outside influences have fueled, worsened and led to more loss of life and displacement than would have been the case had the Kofi Annan plan been followed.

As to his human rights record, Kofi, you are right the "press" in Rwanda has limited scope within which to 'operate' and report but I am sure you know the terrible history of the press in Rwanda and the SIGNIFICANT PART they played in the genocide which left nearly 1 million people dead.

Talking to ordinary Rwandans when I was last there in December 2012, they recognised that there were controls over media reporting but believe you me, the majority of people I spoke to (and I was keen to get a good sense of where the country is after their recent history) were very positive about the way the country was being run, and felt there was more inclusivity. They also felt that some people from the opposition who did not have the nation at heart were part of the problem.

Interestingly, last night I listened to a full documentary on Rwanda by a BBC reporter which included her visits to various parts of the country and an interview with Paul Kagame the president.

She raised the issues of human rights abuses etc. and one thing I admire about Kagamae is that he does not shy away from answering those questions. In his responses, he asked the reporter to check the records and see what was happening on the ground. He actually stands on his (and his government's) record in addressing these issues.

Interestingly in Komla Djumor's interview with president Clinton a few months ago, the subject of Rwanda and human rights abuses was raised with Clinton and his responses were no different from Paul Kagame's.

Kofi, frankly if you are talking about the Mo Ibrahim prize and its focus on good governance, poverty reduction and development, Kagame's record may not be 'clean' but he is miles ahead of many African heads of State who are doing far less to lift their people out of poverty.

One of Kagame's philosophies is that ALL Rwandan children irrespective of ethnicity or background should have opportunities to develop their full potential using all means available including modern technology. Some of the innovative approaches they have employed are remarkable.

Let me add that for a poor country in which only 11% have access to electricity regularly and 40% of whose budjet is funded by external donors (down from 80%) after a complete devastation of their country, the efforts of that government ought to be commended.

Plus, having visited the haulocaust museum and seen and heard stories from people alive today and the stories and pictures of those who were masacred there 20 years ago, I find it particularly rich when the "West" talks about human rights abuses in that country.

What is worse than the rest of us standing by when nearly one million people are slaughtered? And the man who comes in to help restore law, order, a one-nation identity and deprive the detractors, cheats, tribalists and those simply interested in power from doing so we (the same people) turn round to accuse him of "human rights abuses"? Surely something is wrong somewhere.

Coming back to the DRC crisis, this is one that was started and encouraged by the west around the time of Kabilla (Snr) who was tough with the west who wanted mineral and business concessions at their own price for which he refused.

Who knows who were behind his ouster and by the way, what has been the role of the French and Belgian governments in the DRC crisis? Have you recently followed the history of the French in Africa and how they have helped to destroy and maintain the Francophone zone as the poorest part of modern Africa? I would rather we didn't even begin to discuss Paul Kagame and human rights because it is an exagerated issue and not all that we see is what is going on. K

agame would simply not play or dance to the tune of anyone, and I cannot blame himbecause he has a good track record and can also compare his record with those who were there before him (and some of whom are seeking to return to power) and the very west (and the rest of us) whose record on Rwanda is absolutely nothing to write home about. Why do you think he chose to leave the Francophone zone and join the Commonwealth instead? You check the records and you will find that those accusing Kagame of human rights violations have themselves no leg to stand on and should rather be ashamed of themselves.

Can the situation be improved, of course it can, and should, but I am personally weary of a "free press" which will go back to old ways of doing business and foment trouble, whip up sentiments including tribal "supremacy" fallacies and incite people to violence. Have we forgotten so soon what happened in Rwanda? That is one of the reasons I am particularly mad at the bigots on ghanaweb who think they have a cheap forum to propagagte their rubbish.

I do not condone nor do I support human rights violations in any shape or form. I am averse to discrimination of any kind anywhere and believe passionately in the rights of all humans to live peacefully, freely and to be able to express themselves and to go about their business. These freedoms are taken for granted especially by many of us who live in countries where we can do whatever we like. But they have to be put in context, be properly measured and reflective of the national will or the will of the people and the interest of the many, not the few.

I happen to think that those shouting and crying about 'violation of rights' in Rwanda are of the few rather than the many. That is my reading of the situation and what I have gleaned from being there. Others may take a different view but that is entirely their preorgative.

His role though was important: his was a voice that was listened to; his was a voice that resonated across the world. He did bring the momentum to achieve independence on the continent. He must therefore be saluted and praised. It is also true that leaders who followed Nkrumah never persistently sell their messages as he did.

In Ghana though Nkrumah did not achieve unity because he was not tolerant. I also agree that the opposition he faced then was uncompromising but as a leader he should have had it within himself to bring some cooperation. This is what you expect of leaders.

If you read the released CIA papers about how Nkrumah was overthrown, there is no evidence that there was active clandestine effort to overthrow him as some wants us to believe. Rather the same western countries he was lambasting refused him aid, knowing that he had ran down the Ghanaian economy. They inferred that if this aid (including food aid) was refused, he would become so unpopular that he would be overthrown by the military. That is what exactly happened.

Having said all these I do admire Nkrumah for the manner in which he articulated our ambition as a continent. Those words, however, required other ingredients, which I think he failed to marshal.

It is high time we stop hankering about Nkrumah. He's been and done his part. The times are different and we need to look at our circumstances now and to see how we can dig ourselves out of the hole we find ourselves. We should manage to use all the resources (human included) to fashion our own system to benefit from the current world order. We have not brought to the table the sort of solutions that are required. The political system is itself rather becoming a hindrance to solving our problems.

Ironically, at the time Arthur K joined 17 other people to vie for the NPP Flag bearership contest, I read through all the manisfestoes and thought two stood out by light years - those of Arthur Kennedy and Prof Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng. I was on holiday in Ghana. When I mentioned it to one of my old school mates, what he said was "The NPP is a very conservative party. They will never elect any of those!"

Later events proved him right. It is the same all over the continent. Since Kwame Nkrumah, the only other African leaders, military or civilian, that have been anywhere close to being pro-Africa have been Murtala Mohammed and Obasanjo in his military days. Somehow, even Obasanjo lost it when he returned as civilian president.

What we really require is an African leader who is confident in himself and well grounded at home. One who will lead from the front and do exactly as he says. The reason why the OAU was split almost immediately after it was formed was that the most radical of its leaders, Kwame Nkrumah, Sekou Toure, Nasser and Ben Bella did not practise what they preached. While they were advocating for the unity of the continent, their own nationals were either being imprisoned at home, or escaping through neighbours' borders into exile!

What we need is one leader who will first galvanise his own people at home and spearhead the rest of the continent into action. Nigeria, for instance, has enough gas and hydropower potential to supply the energy needs of the whole West Africa for a century, as the nations of the sub-region ready themselves for a major industrial take-off.

Individually, African markets are weak, but can you imagine a West Africa where Ghana is the banking/financial centre, Nigeria the food basket/energy nerve, Cote d'Ivoire the large scale cocoa plantation and fish farming focus and Liberia the source of iron ore for steal production?

The Western industrialised nations (China has now joined) know that as long as Africa remains fragmented geographically, economically and mentally, they can continue to take our raw materials for cheap, return them as finished products at exorbitant prices and keep us eternally indebted to their economies!

Do you know that the original plan for the Akosombo Dam was first conceived with people like JB Daquah in 1935? Do you also know that the original site of the dam was Ajena in the Volta Region?

You probably do not know why it was moved into the direct path of a major fault at Akosombo. That was the beginning of our very devisive politics of today.

People like you will not even wish to know, but the Akuse hydroelectric dam, the extension of the Akosombo Dam, was planned by Busia's government and executed by Acheampong. If we had continued with Busia's radical rural development programme, Accra would today be having a sewerage system like London or New York and people would not be Sh****** on the beaches. The concepts of "kaya yei and dog chain sellers' union" would probably not exist in Accra, Kumasi and other places.

Ever heard of guinea worm and cholera? They were eliminated under Busia's 30 month stewardship. When the "neocolonialist" Busia came to power, Ghana's universities had 65% foreign staff, including VCs. It was Busia's higher education policy that turned universities' staff majority Ghanaian. Those foreign lecturers were paid in foreign currency with their families enjoying free holidays paid for by the Ghanaian taxpayer!

We need humility, honesty and tolerance as a people to begin to move forward. We have not done very much in nearly sixty years of independence because we have not been very honest in our national discourse!

Having said that Dr Arthur Kennedy had shown a remarkable bravery by singling out Nkrumah as the only true visionary of our time.A position most members of his party the npp like ostriches refuse to see and even dispute.Most importantly he seem to agree with Nkrumah that Africa must tow a system of of democracy that best suits our unique experience as Africans and the peculiarities inherent in our culture.

Bravo Arthur Kennedy as he completes his article with the legends quote “We face neither east nor west, we face forwards.” Africa must come of age and that means the confidence to do our own thing and not wait for the Prodis to come to tell us what is right to do.

It would seem Kennedy, as he would cleverly wish us to think, has now seen the light and come a long way from lecturing us with citations of US political figures, from dead white slaveowners to Fiorello LaGuardia. It's nothing new, and his true Danquah-Busia propagandist self shows from the very beginning. He makes clear he is using Nkrumah's ideas (and that's because he knows Danquah-Busia is a bankrupt ideology Ghanaians do not believe in) without embracing Nkrumah. He repeats the worn out post-1966 narrative of Danquah-Busia propaganda. "Nkrumah was not the founder of Ghana" etc, etc. No comment is necessary on the founder question. Your reply, Zomabi, is the best. On statues, I will say Nkrumah did not have enough erected. This was a country emerging not just from colonialism but even worse colonial mentality. Our people had been brainwashed to worship Queen Victoria (a park still remains in Oguaa named after her!), Winston Churchill, and the Union Jack! Paul Kagame is a Tutsi, which makes him think he has the right to rule his country as a birthright. He will never allow a Hutu to oppose him and win an election in his country. His forefathers killed any Hutu who excelled either academically or otherwise. A Hutu was always made to carry the royal regalia of any Tutsi chief. Let me show readers the difference between Tutsis and Hutus. The Tutsis look like the Chadian refugees who patrol our streets begging for alms, and the Hutus look like you and I with typical black African features. Any wonder why those Chadian refugees always send their children to do the begging whilst their parents relax under trees? I have tried to offer employment to some of these lazy idiots, and guess what they communicated to me. That they cannot work for me because of their colour. You know they look like arabs. So in a typical arab fashion they cannot and will not work for a black African. I always weep for black African Muslims.
Something happened in Libya when a Ghanaian was arrested and sent to the police station. As he was being tortured, he asked that he be forgiven in the name of Allah. The Libyan police got so mad at the mention of that name by a black African that they inflicted more harm. They asked what does he mean by the mention of that “great name”. So the more he kept mentioning Allah, the more beatings he got until he was finally deported. This guy is in Fadama here in Accra!!
I will try to put on air one day a Ghanaian who littered the streets of Singapore and was arrested and sent to court. To his utter dismay, the judge freed him on the grounds that he came from Kwame Nkrumah’s Ghana, and that most of the policies being implemented was stolen from Kwame Nkrumah. This guy is currently with a popular courier company here in Accra.

Leadership are wicked. They are not interested in developing a country where hassle is a thing of the past. They don't want to make the country enjoyable to live. So long as they are comfortable, well-paid and are assured, there's no urgency. They will follow the world bank, IMF and MCA whether people suffer or not because they believe they cannot be touched. With just 60,000 acres of rubber he established the Bonsu tyre factory, while Liberia with millions of acres of rubber has nothing to show. Next, we had two sugar factories, match factory, jute Ian
and shoe factories in Kumasi, Tema factories including the per fab which could be producing enough materials to build John Mahama's 200 schools in a year. Bui dam was to be constructed by 1971, so was the other HEP sites in northern and Western regions. The gold refinery in the western region would have increased national resources or revenue. As we read this speech, we should remember that the Cold War was there, and so some of the mistakes.
Our leaders of today are basically beggars with no thought and action. God bless Nkrumah, Chief Awolowo, who made education a right not a privilege in western Nigeria, Ahmed Ben Bella and Lumumba. Africa Must Unite!

Until Arthur Kennedy learns to understand the full import of what Osagyefo stood for and what he did (and still does, even after his demise, through his written work) for Ghana, Africa, and all oppressed peoples worldwide, he will remain confused and continue to waddle in myopic and tribalistic political party ponds, his all-too late acknowledgement of Nkrumah's leadership prowess notwithstanding. Were it not for the many attainments of Nkrumah, Arthur Kennedy would certainly not have been educated from the elementary level to the university level where he, at one point, led the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS).
Kennedy's five-point preambles are merely his ill-advised opinion, and have nothing to do with reality. The only other personalities who would qualify for the title of co-founders with Nkrumah of Ghana are individuals like Hon. Joseph E. Casely Hayford (the senior), the Hon. Atta Ahuma, John Mensah Sarbah, J.W. Sey, T.F.E. Jones, George Hughes, J.P. Brown, W.E. Pieterson, the Hon. J.W. deGraft Johnson (the senior) and others, as well as exiled kings like Kobena Igyan and Prempeh the elder. These were intellectual, political and administrative giants of the Gold Coast who, sadly, did not live long enough to see their work and aspirations culminate in the personality and work of Kwame Nkrumah. Historically, these stand in sharp contrast to the precursors to the NPP who were making clandestine trips to Britain begging the colonial power not to grant independence to the then Gold Coast because we were “not ready”!
The fact of the matter is that Kwame Nkrumah had no desire or value for self-adulation. Those unimportant statues of his were, among other reasons, his attempt to unite the whole newly-independent nation under his banner in the war against colonialism and the ensuing neo-colonialism. Like the Chinese, he had discovered that the ultimate aim of any colonial or neo-colonial power was to obtain the colonized country's raw materials dirt-cheap or free, use them to solve its unemployment and other social problems, and dump the transformed finished product from the raw materials in the colonized country at exorbitant prices. At that pace, it would be thousands of years, if ever, before the colonized country could even begin to stand on its own feet.
The statues, the so-called one-party state, the unpalatable Preventive Detention Act for those attempting to derail the new freedom train -- all of these were necessary elements to achieve rapid development in a newly independent nation. Who would have thought that modern China, barely ten (10) years older than Ghana, would have become such a great economy in the 21st century, second only to the United States! That was what Nkrumah was trying to achieve for Ghana and Africa. The sad part of all this is that the enemies of Ghana and Africa knew all along that Nkrumah and China were on the right path. China fought extremely hard ideologically and pragmatically to resist the reactionary elements both at home and abroad, and is now reaping the benefits. Today, if China should cash in all the debt owed her by the United States, the whole American economy would come to a grinding halt. Yet reactionary elements in Ghana and abroad so blinded the vision of many Ghanaians that they could not see beyond the statues, and bought into the false rhetoric of the so-called evils of the one-party State spewed by the Western press led by Britain and the United States. This led to the CIA-engineered coup d'état that toppled Nkrumah's government on February 24, 1966. The prolonged result is what is extant in Ghana and Africa today ... and still, we refuse to learn!
