New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate in the 2012 election, Nana Akufo-Addo has stated that considering the current economic situation in the country under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, “the NPP remains the only hope for Ghanaians.”

“I am sure you all know what is happening in Ghana. The mismanagement of the country’s economy has left the economy in disarray” he said.

Addressing hundreds of Ghanaians during the second anniversary of the Nana Addo Ladies Club, in the United Kingdom (UK), Nana Akufo-Addo admonished members of the New Patriotic Party “to do everything possible to win back political power in 2016.”

Because, “in an era where poverty has kept many children outside the classroom, there is a need for the NPP to come to power so that we can implement the free public school education to enable children to go to school.”

The UK is having price increases by the utility companies, this is a general trend globally. If we had waited for Kwame Nkrumah to construct the five hydro dams and one the atomic energy station he had planned to build, there would be no need for the strike. We over threw him and the CPP in 1966, and since then, the country's leaders stop thinking and acting in the interest of the nation and people.

Insight is not a major newspaper, its impact is marginal, it sells less than 100 copies a day. KP, rather spend your time and energy to improve the quality of the paper.
Government's communication wing is very weak, it needs support from reasoned media specialists to explain the reality to the people. Meanwhile, President Mahama should reduce his salary and that of ministers and chief directors and Board members by 20 per cent to demonstrate leadership that cares.

The late Professor Mills is more sensitive and reasonable than the President Mahama judging from the way government is handling national concerns.
The strategy being adopted by the current administration is to keep it tight in the early period and relax things at the end of their tenure.This is usually based on the understanding that the people have short memory and will forget about their diffiult past. Probably, it is true. At the beginning of our practice of democracy, we have exhibited this character but the current government should note that as long as some of us are around, this mentality should stop. We have good retentive memory to refresh the citizenry.
If this government was sensitive and reasonable, it should have taken a strategic approach to some of the current increases in the utilities.Just after assuming the administration of the country petroleum price was increase more than once.Admission of wards into tertiaty schools was bedeviled with lots of problems, accompanied by high financial demands due to corruption. Admission to second cycle is posing its challenge to parents. On the heels of these challenges and others, comes with very high increase in utilities.
What is wrong with President Mahama? Does he want to sacrifice the majority of Ghanaians for the reckless spending of he undertook prior and after the elections? The people of Ghana should refuse it entirely. Ghana is not for them. The fact that he won the faulty elections of 2012 should give him food for thought.
In my view organised labour and the private sector should come together and bring this country to its knees to send a signal to politicians.Afterall, how many are the politicians?

Households in Britain have seen their living standards stagnate for the past four years and are spending an increasing share of their incomes on "essentials" such as fuel, food and housing.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) says households' true disposable income has flatlined since the end of the recession, in the autumn of 2009, even though national output has expanded by 4.2% over the same period.

In a report likely to intensify the political row over energy prices, the ONS says the proportion of household income accounted for by essentials rose from 28.3% in 2003 to 36% a decade later.

"The proportion accounted for by gas and electricity has risen from 1.8% in 2003 to 3.1% in 2013, despite very little overall change in the volume of household energy consumption," the ONS says.

It adds that the weakness of real income growth – a measure of how much households have to spend once inflation is taken into account – has put pressure on budgets and limited the extent to which consumers can support growth by spending more.

"Household budgets have been squeezed by recent increases in the price of household goods," the ONS said in its economic review, adding that demand for gas and electricity did not go down when prices went up. "As a result, the recent increases in the cost of energy have taken a larger share of disposable incomes."

The ONS said recent movements in real household disposable income had followed the pattern of the recessions and recoveries in the early 1980s and early 1990s. In each case, an initial sharp drop in national output was not matched by a similar-sized fall in living standards because there was a lag before unemployment rose, cuts in borrowing costs helped mortgage payers, and increased welfare benefits helped stabilise the economy.

As the economy subsequently recovered, household living standards rose more slowly than gross domestic product.

It's so unfortunate to read the many invectives people are heaping on the President when by the Laws of Ghana, Gov't is not involved in the adjustment of utility tariffs.
Previous governments have failed to expand the capacity of independent and autonomous institutions to facilitate the expansion and generation of electricity, quality water, good road network, access to healthcare, accommodation and other social amenities in tandem with Ghana's growing population and industry or businesses.
TUC is represented at PURC and I suppose were involved in the consultation and determination of the new tariff adjustments. And nobody is interested in asking the TUC to explain to Ghanaian whether they want Gov'ts to continue to interfere in the activities of PURC of which they are represented and undermine its constitutional authority and independence or not? And Ghanaians must determine whether they want to uphold the independence of its Constitutional bodies or want govts to undermine them for political expediency or not?
It's so unfortunate that many of us continue to create the impression that, the real problems facing Ghana is the current President. Most Ghanaians living abroad who should even know better regarding how systems operate in the developed world spew out a lot of untruths just to discredit the government or the president because of politics. Our major problem as a nation is our national attitude. It stinks and rotten to the core. We lack sincerity in our criticisms and in our politics and expect to develop. People fail to speak to the merits of issues but quick to vilify others for no justifiable grounds. Whether it's an NDC, NPP or CPP gov't, Ghana has got to allow its institutions to work in order to facilitate its socio-economic development.
TUC has every right to demonstrate but they also answer the question about how to generate reliable electricity and water to the very people they are urging to sit down and to create more jobs?
And the utility companies like ECG, and Ghana Water Company must tell Ghanaians what developmental or expansion plans they have in place and the timelines so that irrespective of which government is in power they can implement specific growth plans that will address the energy and water demands or needs of households and industry.
We must all stop the political coloration of the real issues confronting the country and I dare say that stakeholders such as the TUC that is supposed to protect Ghana's Interest has compromised its integrity and has lost the moral courage to condemn any government. Can the TUC also answer questions about productivity of Ghanaian workers?
You listen to most Parliamentarians and they are just clueless; the Judiciary cannot assert its authority and independence to condemn and punish white-color crimes, reckless drivers, and many indiscipline characters both within and outside government. And we always come here to trade insults because its convenient to do so.
President Mahama is just inheriting the accumulated rots from previous governments and if he does not allow state institutions to work he will also go down in history like the rest. He must represent a change that will allow the laws and systems set up to protect the interest of Ghana operate. I would be pleased if the President can charge the institutions to work effectively without any fear of political detractors both within and outside the NDC. That's what Ghana needs in order to develop.

It’s so convenient for you to vilify me and spew out those political talks without thinking out any solution. And that’s the very problem we continue to have as a people.
The issue is, Ghana is faced with a pressing energy and water problem that requires thinking out immediate and sustainable short to long term solutions and not what you are talking about. My reference to developed countries is in respect of how they allow institutions to function as against how we set up institutions and then allow political elements like you render them ineffective.
I am just wondering; are these the kind of questions that you will asking or the kind of argument that you will be advancing if you were to represent workers at the PURC ?
As someone aptly asked, does the TUC want the system to break down and come back to engage in a lengthy political talks? Does labour realize that if there is a shortfall in energy and water generation they will not even get any work to do? That’s why we need to be holistic in our approach to addressing such issues and not be myopic in our analysis.
Mr. concerned worker, Ghana’s problem is that we have allowed politics to cloud our sense of objectivity even in our national discourse. We have given politicians lot latitude to take the Ghanaian for a ride. Ghanaians must know that neither NDC nor NPP generates electricity or water. That is why organized labor must support the independence of national institutions such as the PURC, ECG, the Police, GWC etc. so that we can avert such harsh adjustments in utility tariffs in the future.
