“While increasing access to the Internet would improve the socio-economic circumstances, its negative influences call for a concerted effort to counter the bad influence.

What inventions? so many profs and Doctors only on paper, with nothing substantial to show for it except perhaps prof. allotey, we are so daft, ghana. what engineering solutions to our water, sanitation, electricity have they come up with and successfully implemented. we got a long way to go.

1. Three paragraphs of just names, names and names of the notable attendees! What is the purpose of this very long list of names? I feel drowned in names, but hungry for more analysis of Prof Allotey's proposal.

2. Prof Allotey's proposed hybrid method (similar to, or otherwise known as the distance method or the correspondence method)requires reliable internet services. These in turn, require reliable electric power-supply systems. And internet services can be expensive.

The infrastructural and maintenance costs for the internet service providers (public or private) can be expensive; and the equipment costs for individual Ghanaian students and their guardians can be prohibitive.

This largely explains why the hybrid/distance method of education is common and effective in the "developed countries", and why it would have a hard time in the "developing countries" such as Ghana. Prof Allotey's idea and proposal are great. However, without the adequate preliminary conditions, its labour and growing pains will be painful and long. But it is worth trying.

Dum-Sor would nip online programs in the bud. I am impressed however with the array of Professors, PhD holders etc but Ghana's education has not helped in our development. Many of our people live in the stone age conditions.

Why is it Ghana's educated and political elite class cannot have original ideas and ideals of their own except copy from civilized nations?
Advances in education via technology are demands that have been brought on by the demand for highly skilled technical people to fill vacancies in a workforce/workplace that is highly technically and automated. In Ghana we neither have low tech jobs to offer of high tech jobs to give. Looking for ways to graduate a lot more Ghanaians through online learning schemes is to add to the burdens that currently await high school, technical and university graduates without jobs.
Now, I say having theory savvy graduating students with online education is not a remedy built for Ghana but for highly industrialized and developed nations. What Ghana needs as a new approach to learning and instruction is the classic two tier system where technical schools outnumber universities and secondary schools. In Germany and in other Western civilized nations, technical schools are where blue color workers and innovations of tomorrow take place they are the source for industries not universities. The number of students obtaining education from technical schools has always outnumbered graduates from universities; the number of people graduating from secondary schools in Ghana outnumber university/college graduate in Ghana. We are a nation that is currently challenged on gainful employment of our semi-educated youth. Is it our goal to add to the misery of having unemployed but relatively educated youth incapable of applying their classroom based theories? Should our education results not be based on applicable subjects in sciences?
The breed of our university graduates have failed to be entrepreneurs because our theory based approach to education has not compelled anyone to be curios. It is only when what we learn in class is demonstrably applicable to everyday living those students can make a link between fantasy and realities of life. It is at that moment they will seek ways to capitalize on the things around and create things out of their environment

Let me just give you a simple example.
If you teach a student how to build a refrigerator, and even makes the student actualy build one, you would certainly eventually produce a highly skilled individual adept at constructing or fixing refrigerators.

If you teach a student the PRINCIPLES and THEORIES involved in refrigeration, he would be very equipped for innovation, and with curiosity, enthusiasm, and creative thinking, come up with an entirely NOVEL way of producing refrigeration.

It takes plenty of theoretical thinking to be truly innovative, else one would just be churning out what had already been established. Also, theories provide the framework for further curiosity and imagination, creating a fertile ground for exploration.

We must listen to this voice of wisdom and take heed.

Prof Allotey is absolutely right. We must look at alternative means of education like distance learning, an open university, making use of technology, online learning, work-based learning etc. This would ease the pressure on the traditional universities.

This will become even more important as our population grows and the demand for higher education grows with it.

Government would do well to consider Prof Allotey's sensible suggestions.
