10 Girls Raped In Ghana Daily

Hardly a day goes by without a report on a child defilement case in the media, and according to child rights groups working on the issue, at least 10 girls under the age 16 are defiled every day in the country.

They say that even though the cases reported in themselves are alarming, they constitute only about 10% of such abuses, as the overwhelming majority of the cases are hushed.

The penalty for defilement was increased in the 1998 amendment to the Criminal Code (ACT 29) to a minimum of seven and a maximum of 25 years without an option of a fine. Yet recent studies show that sexual abuse of children in Ghana is still alarming high.

Figures from the then Ministry for Women and Children Affairs (MOWAC) put the annual case of reported defilement cases at around 800 a year, but according to one of the groups working to stop the practice, Light For Children Ghana, this is only a small portion of an alarming national catastrophe.

For this year alone, Ghana News Agency bulletins have been recording an average of about three defilement case a day.

The majority of the defilement cases are hushed, according to child psychologists, because in some case the victims do not understand what has happened to them or are afraid of being shamed or accused of being bad girls.

Some guardians also prefer to keep such incidence to themselves.

This is especially the case where the abusers happen to be family members. There have also been cases of neighbors, teachers, pastors and all sorts of people abusing girls some as young as two years.

There are also instances where guardians go to the police, but later stop following the case and give up because they find the processes cumbersome, studies indicate.

Making the situation worse, according to Mrs Juliana Azumah, the last Minister for MOWAC, was that the over 50,000 children living and working on the country’s streets were often taken advantage of by sexual predators or run to commercial sex as way of making a living.

Also in certain parts of the country such as in parts of the Upper West Region, for instance, Action Aid Ghana, reports that an average of 50 young girls below the ages of 15 and 17 are abducted for marriage every year in the Jirapa, Lambussie/Karni and Sissala East districts.

Figures at the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) National Secretariat indicate that boys are also sometimes abused sexually, but the vast majority of the victims are girls.

What have you got to say about the above 'statistics' by a reputable Ghanaians newspaper, 'The Daily Guide' and then look me in the face and deny it.

Talking about comparison of crime rate between Ghana with population of 24.5million and Nigeria with the population of 170million and still growing, is like comparing heaven and hell. The Daily Guide statistics shows that average of 10 girls are raped daily in Ghana, i.e. 10x365= 3,650 girls go throw the harrowing pain of rape yearly in Ghana, with just 24.5m people. Now compare that to Nigeria with population of 170m which is seven times bigger than Ghana. Which means that a whopping 25,500 Nigerians girls are going through the same horrible experiences like their Ghanaians counterpart, (which is NOT). Don't you think that Amnesty International would have taken Nigeria govt to tasks if such thing ever happen in Nigeria? Your guest is as good as mine. We are NOT doing that bad in Nigeria, when it comes to the raping of children, compared to Ghana. I rest my case.

Talking about crimes statistics, I will not waste my time by comparing mighty Nigeria with your so-called eldorado Ghana. Just yesterday 27th of Nov. a Ghanaian big time drug dealers Darryl Tawiah, 34, was jailed 14yrs, but no one notice. Imagine if it was a Nigerian? BBC, CNN and all other news outlet will magnify it as if it was the entire Nigerians population that commit the crime. That is the price of Nigeria being a giant in Africa.

However, my purpose here is to expose the WRONG notion that Ghanaians are 'saints' or nice people. Read below what your fellow Ghanaians said about your so-called Paradise Ghana. I rest my case.

Reverend Robert Joseph Mark-Robertson, Head Pastor of the Tanokrom branch of Christian Faith Church International, near Takoradi, says Ghana is under a curse.

“I recently had a revelation during which God told me that the country is under curse and no matter what we do, if the leaders and the people don’t repent from their evil deeds, the country will not succeed in whatever it does.

“Ghana is under curse because of the attitude of some political and religious leaders who are using their positions to only fight for their selfish interests to the detriment of the people, he indicated.

Speaking to Daily Guide in an interview, the reverend minister noted that the call for peace by Ghanaians was misplaced.

According to him, Ghanaians must pray, repent and reconcile with God to avert His wrath.

“Over the past few years, I get worried when I think about Ghana. The rate at which disasters have visited our doorsteps makes me panic and wonder if we are on the right path with the Almighty,” he said.

Making reference to Isaiah 3:1-5, Rev Mark-Robertson explained that whenever the Israelites suffered calamities beyond their understanding, they turned to God for reasons and He always answered them.

He chided some men of God in the country who extort money from their followers.

“Instead of these religious leaders to pray to avert God’s wrath on the nation, they have resorted to using certain dubious means to rob their church members of huge sums of money,” he added.

He alleged that some pastors, who operate what he termed as ‘one man churches,’ visit ‘juju’ men to get some spiritual powers to perform miracles and collect the monies of unsuspecting church members.

“Some religious leaders in Ghana have taken a cue from the traditional priests.

“I cannot fathom why majority of Ghanaians continue to live in abject poverty even though God has blessed this country with almost all we need to improve our standard of living. Ghana is indeed under a curse,” he alleged.

Whatever you call it: blood covenant, ancestral curse, your own curse, idol worship, or simply "sin", the blood of Jesus cleanses all. It only requires your belief and nothing more. You don't need another saviour to help you. "For God loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life."
But this looks too simple for many christians so they go about looking for something dramatic and if they are not lucky and they fall into the hands of "wolves in sheep's clothing, they are devoured.

Ghana police, did you wait for medical confirmation before arresting the father. Then they will go to court to ask the presiding judge to remand the suspect for a time to investigate. Atuguba type of Judges will take the bribe and remand innocent suspects. Remand in itself is a punishment.

Is the police saying she did not have sex with a different man between the days or before she lodged her complaint? Any evidence within her might have been compromised since it's likely she had sex with her boy friend with whom she wanted to break off a blood covenant with or any other guy because she is in her active sexual age.

No one forced this 20 year old lady to the hotel in the first place. The facts of the story didn't posit Rev. Held this girls hand into the room. People this girl is NOT a minor.....she knows exactly what she is about and wants. So couldn't she scream in the hotel or force her way out. Listen lady, rape is a very sensitive issue and can forever doom this man' life and even yours. Do you know the stigma that comes with this.hmmm...it's sad it's been considered as an act of rape but left to me I think this was a consensual agreement between the two of you and someone may have breached the contract. And to Rev. Hope you've learned your lessons and live as a true ambassador of God. Don't forget you never can mock God.
