Not many politicians, I can confidently say, have genuine conviction that they can do "something" for the people in Ghana. Most of them already knew exactly how they were going to steal before coming to power.

Take for instance former president Kufuor who came to power through vilification and insults to JJR on the one hand and on the other, shouting on top of his voice "Zero Tolerance for Corruption". But how do these reconcile with the fact that he started negotiating for the acquisition of a hotel as early as the last quarter of 2001. Recently there is much noise about drill ship which was also sold in 2001. So it is easy to understand that the guy had the mind to steal long before he came to power by manipulating the confidence of the electorate who had enough with NDC under JJR at that time.

This is the best political commentary I have read for a while.Thank you very much, but not so fast, wait a minute. I think you forgot the catergry of well meaning people who get into politics to genuinely change the path of the country for the sake of the children of tomorrow. They however realize that Ghanaians like you are hypocrites who don't vote for the issues the profess to care about but rather for their political parties from which they derive patronage to survive. So after wasting the novice idealistic politician's time and money, he is mocked as somebody who talks sense but does not dish out money and therefore deserves no votes. After such a harsh experience the novice idealistic politician has one of two choices. He or She can either return into their shell of a private life, abandoning any further interest in public service, or he/she can join the hoard of pig politicians to give the hypocritical Ghanaians the government of wolves they deserve! How is that for a two way sword?! Yes societies gets the leaders they deserve!!!!! FACT PROVEN BEYOND DOUBT! save yourselves no one is coming to save you from yourselves!

Kofi Amenyo would make a wonderful English-language professor, because the guy writes extremely well, more so because he does not need "big" words to convey his thoughts.

That said, this piece is very important because the writer accurately captured Ghana's greatest problems at this time: "greed" and "hubris".

A good friend who returned from Ghana recently informed me that life is very difficult for the average Ghanaian at the moment, yet politicians and their cronies are living like Saudi Arabian princes. Folks, Ghanaian leaders must change their ways, or they will be giving soldiers an excuse to torpedo our democratic experiment and return us to the "Stone Age."

I remember Rawlings once said to a BBC journalist that economics he understood not, and political science he understood not, but he knew when he was hungry. Well, if Rawlings did not know how an economy worked, what, then, was the bloke's reason to overthrow Limann's administration? All across Africa, we had seen how semi-literate and illiterate soldiers derailed their nations' economies by overthrowing legitimate governments and drawing the ire of Western nations whose economic aid is a necessity for some of these African nations to be able to survive.

I will hate to see Ghana return to the dark days of military rule, but we are slowly heading in that direction, and I hope Mahama, his loyalists, members of parliament, their loyalists, and all others in power will begin to see the dark handwriting on the wall.

Before we had oil, life was tolerable for Ghanaians. Now that the oil money is coming in, things are worse for Ghanaians. Where is the oil money going, amanfuo? What in the world is happening in Ghana? We need to be careful, people, because hardships breed discontent, and discontent breeds usurpation of power.

Please, we need to call in to radio programs and remind our elected leaders that they need to shape up or they risk dangerous consequences no one wants to see in Ghana.

Are we a cursed people? Why do I ask? Because only a cursed being will steal that which belongs to an entire family, or tribe, or even nation. What does one man gain from stashing away $5 million dollars that could have been used to build two new hospitals to support the dwindling health care delivery system?

May the good Lord help us wake up from our slumber of greed and hubris.
