There is public outrage in Ghana over the generous retirement package for ex president John Kufuor and other former heads of state, which was approved on 6 January, the day before Kufuor stepped down from power.

The provisions include two residences – including one in Accra – six vehicles, paid overseas travel, medical and dental treatment, an entertainment budget, $1 million in seed money for the establishment of a foundation and other miscellaneous benefits.

The package has drawn criticism from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and also from Kufuor’s own New Patriotic Party (NPP), with some members of parliament on both sides claiming they knew nothing about it beforehand. “Why should we give our ex-presidents these expensive things while people in Nima and other places in the country lack public toilets?” asked Dan Botwe, former NPP general secretary and current MP for Okere. His colleague Appiah Ofori, MP for the Asikuma Odoben Brakwa constituency in Central Region, has threatened to go to court to challenge the measures, which he describes as “obscene”.

Kufuor has not commented publicly on the package although he has made it known through the newspaper “Daily Guide” that he thinks three cars are sufficient for a retired president.

I don't know if the people of your country truly understand your standing in the international community, but you are one of the most respected international leaders. You have represented your country well, you have represented the continent of Africa well, and you represent certain basic values extremely well. So it's an honor to be with you today.

And so ours is a -- it's certainly not a gift. It is given in a cooperative spirit that (inaudible) people. And we believe that it is in our national interest to promote freedom and democracy, as well as help the citizenry make the (inaudible). And you've led the way, Mr. President; it's been very easy to support your government.

And I appreciate you bringing up disease. There's no doubt in my mind that given some help, the government of Ghana -- led by you, sir -- will eradicate malaria. It's going to take a lot of work and a lot of organizations to do this, and support from the international community -- which you will have -- and I predict to the people of Ghana that when you look back at President Kufour's leadership, you'll say this was the beginning of the end of the disease (inaudible).

So I appreciate your leadership, my friend, and I want to thank you very much for this warm hospitality. I do want to thank the people of Ghana -- at least those we've seen so far -- for getting up early, lining the streets and waving with such enthusiasm. It made us all feel great, and it's a part of the trip I've really been looking forward to. So grateful for your hospitality. Thank you, sir. (Applause.)

The mafia was looking for a new man to make weekly collections from all the private businesses they were 'protecting'. Feeling the heat from the police, they decided to use a deaf person for the job. That way, should he get caught, he would be unable to communicate to the police what he was doing.
During his first week on the job, the deaf collector picks up over $60,000. He quickly becomes greedy, decides to keep the money and hides it in a safe place. Realizing that their collection is late, the mafia sends some of their hoods after the deaf collector. The hoods find the deaf man and ask him where the money is. Since the deaf collector is unable to communicate with them, they drag him to an interpreter.

The mafia hood tells the interpreter, "Ask him where da money is." The interpreter signs "Where's the money?" to the deaf man.

The deaf man signs back, "I don't know what you're talking about."

The interpreter says to the hood, "He says he doesn't know what you're talking about."

The hood takes out a pistol, places it in the deaf collector's ear and says, "NOW, ask him where da money is."

Again the interpreter signs, "Where's the money?"

The deaf man signs, "The $60,000 is in Central Park. It's hidden in the fifth tree stump on the left from the West 78th Street gate."

The interpreter turns to the hood and says, "He says he still doesn't know what you're talking about and doesn't think you have the guts to pull the trigger!"

At times, it is quite amazing to hear people who chastise some old politicians as being agents to the US spy agency while keeping "mute" over what Nunoo Mensah said without mincing words.

Hypocrisy is destroying Ghana and this man would have been jail for spying while being a general in the Ghana army. NDC supporters have been mute because Nunoo Mensah is one of them but they will not hesitate to brand J.B Danquah as someone who tirelessly, aligned himself with the CIA without any concrete proof.
