Is it necessary for dead brain Nkrumacrats to come out at this time to make such comparisons? Trust me, if you feel compelled to come out to defend Nkrumah because the whole world is memorializing and honoring Mandela, then either you are an idiot or Nkrumah was not great after all. What have this attention seeking Nkrumacrats done for themselves and the country since Nkrumah passed? You are behaving like Kwame Nkrumah, in one fell sweep, collected all the wisdom in Ghana and put them in a pot and took them to a tree top. Get real, Kwame Nkrumah trampled upon the rights of his fellow citizens, made himself a secular monarch and set the tone for autocratic rules all over Africa, the debilitating consequences of which we are still reeling off. Not one political prisoner was recorded under Mandela's rule; can we say the same for Nkrumah? Stop irritating our ears. If Kwame Nkrumah was good he wouldn't have been overthrown by the army. Get on with it; you cannot force Nkrumah's "greatness" down our throat.

If one has to come out at this particular time while we are mourning the loss of Mandela, to assert or push Nkrumah's greatness down our throats, then I am afraid he was not greater than Mandela. Nkrumah died alone in exile, the world barely blinked at his passing. Compare that with Mandela, not even close.

Nkrumah like JJ Rawlings killed his opponents, imprisoned his opponents as well as people who do not share ideas and belief with him. Lets look beyond the boarders of Ghana what Kwame Nkrumah did. He took part in the assassination of certain great African leaders who he thought would be preferred by Africans other than him Nkrumah. If you do not know Nkrumah was a brain behind the assassinations of Patrice Lumumba of Kongo and Tafawa Balewa of Nigeria and many more. Africans would have preferred either one of the men over Nkrumah as the president of Africa.
Lets come home to Ghana, What did he Nkrumah did to Ghanians who even regard Nkrumah than their maker God?. Nkrumah use Ghana money to bribe countries like Egypt, Algeria, Guinea and even Nigeria, you can name a lot more. Instead of using the money which the British left for Ghana developing Ghana, Nkrumah was thinking about becoming the president of Africa. That was a selfish idea. If he Nkrumah has embarked on foreign investment with the money and wealth Ghana had at that time, Ghana economy today today would be like China, Korea, Japan Taiwan and the rest. You will ask me this question: What about the OAU? OAU under my foot. In the name of OAU when the Nigerians were fighting the Biafran war, a lot of these Nigerians took refuge in Ghana while Nkrumah was the president of Ghana. These Nigerians received free education, healthcare acquired lands to build houses and make farms. At that time the Nigerians were dominating in the Ghana petty trading in Ghana. They even didn't require passport to enter Ghana. As time went by Nkrumah was removed our nation by the 1966 military coup. Busia who was the prime minister for the second republic of Ghana asked the Nigerians to go back to rebuild Nigeria because the civil/Biafran war was over. The Nigerians took the alien compliance order as an offense. So when things got worse in the Acheampong, Akuffo and stupid JJ Rawlings era, the Nigerian thought that it was an opportunity for revenge over Ghana. They killed, robbed, beat and do all sorts of cruelties to Ghanians who thought that with the economic hardship in Ghana Nigeria would be the best place to take refuge because when they were at war, Ghana fed, clothed and nurtured the Nigerians. Is that what you called African Unity? There are a lot more stories about how Algerians, Cameronians and some African countries treated desperate Ghanians in their country. Again I say OAU under my foot. Mandela's legacy lives on, he was able to help his people to achieve their aim. Did Kwame Nkrumah's dream of African unity materialized, the answer is a BIG NO. Nkrumah was a dreamer who did not achieve his aim whereas NELSON MANDELA was a dreamer who achieved his aim, saw it, enjoyed it till he died. Nkrumah is in his grave crying over what he did while Mandela is in heaven enjoying eternity with Jesus.

Regarding Patrice Lumumba of Congo, Nkruma again used the occasion to murder Lumumber to pave way for him to be the first OAU chairman. Even the CPP know of what I am talking about. J A Ankra and co realized that the murder of Lumumber which Nkrumah involved them in warranted overthrow because Nkrumah hands was becoming too bloody within the boundaries of Ghana but if he became the president of Africa with his Atomic bomb, he could be doing the murder on large scale. Do not support blindly but accept the fact that Nkrumah had a dream but the dream did not help we Ghanaians. Accept the fact that he wasted our money for nothing. It is our God given right not to allow anyone, including our beloved Barack Obama, to distort history and put their "stamp of ignorance" on the story as we know it.

It is the inability of African to tell their story that has resulted in others telling our story their way.

The greatest African is Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah. Mandela was great because he was the appeaser and truly was a reconciliator.

What Nkrumah did for Africa, Mandela did not do 1/1,000,000th of that.

Nkrumah was light-years ahead of even the present generation of African leaders. Just try and wrap your mind around that. Kwame Nkrumah was what African needed to develop, he started and was pulled down by the westerners who saw him as a treat and today he is being denied his rightful place in Africa's history by those who know little about him.

When Mandela visited Ghana in the 60s, and was flown out on a Ghanaian plane back, he was surprised that Ghana has trained her own pilots and were that good at what they do. Mandela was full of praise for the visionary Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah.

One one can tell our story and history for us but by ourselves. I rest my case.

Ghanaian do not revere Nkrumah at any measure just as Israel still do not recognize Jesus Christ. Madiba and the lot were all following Nkrumah's vision because he was at the very head of the emancipation and none other level. Dr Akosa got it right because Osagyefo was myopically seen by the West as a threat to their exploitation of Africa not the same way Mandela was rooting for only South African Blacks. It will not be fair to put Dr. Nkrumah and Mandela on the same scale to be absolutely honest. Get some of Dr. Nkrumah's books to read and listen to his speeches and you will easily convince yourself. Compare the confidence, breaking of tribal/racial barriers, education, projects, etc. he boldly enacted for Ghanaians and all Black race and know how to respect the lofts of the greatest African. If he came from Rwanda or Mali, based on his nature he could still be the greatest. One needs to experience Nkrumah's magic outside our shores to realise his influence. Whatever you think about Ghanaians does not matter in this observation. The subject is about icons not people. May the souls of both Africans rest in perfect peace. GOD BLESS AFRICA.

They had their secured resident at the then popular students hostel on the Nkomo road at the Airport residential area.

Nkrumah was all about Pan-Africanism, that's absolute control of the Black- mans' affairs by the Black-man all over the world.

Osagyefo made the most covenant declaration that, 'the independence of Ghana is meaningless unless its linked to the total liberation of Africa'

As an organisation manager in Botswana, I have always suspected and have strongly believe that Nelson Mandela complomised on his principles and negotiated for his freedom with the White as there is no any changed what-so-ever in the lives of the million Blacks who sacrifice their lives for the Black freedom because there no any indication of elimination of apartheid in South Africa but white apartheid just changed hands from white to black apartheid whilst the whites still enormously have political power through the control social economy of South Africa, Soweto is still the stinky, unemployed slum Soweto.

If appeasing brutal white exploiters and oppressors is what made Mandela great, then please, I DON'T WANT THAT KIND OF GREATNESS EVER!

Mandela didn't do anything others before him, Nkrumah, inclusive, didn't do. Nkrumah also came out of prison to make peace with His gaolers and became Leader of Govt and later Prime Minister. He forgave but didn't forget what the struggle was against and for. Mandela forgot.

Jomo Kenyattah also came out of prison and the Mau Mau War of Liberation, which was far, far more brutal than what happened in S. Africa and made peace with the whites, allowing them to control to date some vast and prime portion of Kenya. So who cares for another stooge in that mould? Even Mugabe followed that path but realised that it was the way of folly.

Yeah! Mandela had led Africans into the era of Global Apartheid, with ANC chieftains like Ramaphosa becoming the Buthelezis of the emergent Global Apartheid, stupidly rich beyond their wildest dreams while the mass of S. Africans continue to wallow in poverty and xenophobia against fellow Africans from even neighbouring countries which suffered untold war damages, sabotages and suffering unleashed on them by the Apartheid regime, which devastated their economies.

Under Mandela, S. Africa was advised to take a stand offish policy towards Africa and concentrate on the SADCC region, with some revived Cecil Rhodes Cape to Cairo platform. I was there when the report was written on commission for the S. African govt. They were just supposed to pay lip service to African insts. such as the African Devt Bank and OAU peace keeping missions. That's why they refused to send troops to Rwanda while selling arms to the Hutu regime, btw.

Nkrumah was the anti-thesis of all these anti-pan African outlook of Mandela. Nkrumah, with Ghana's meagre resources, compared to that of S. Africa, instituted compulsory free education. It started as free educ. in the North in 1952, as soon as he became Leader of Govt Business. He set out the change the daily lives and existence of th3 common man.

On the order hand I will not be surprised you told this by your parents or some real uneducated people. The fact is Dr Nkrumah was neither capitalist, dictator or communist. He was Africanist pure and simple.

Dr Nkrumah was never a dictator, he only tried to protect himself and others because of the course taken by the then opposition party, which now NPP. The opposition throwing bombs around to destroy and kill innocent people after losing the elections.

Dr Nkrumah was never a communist also. The reason been he used his intelligence and vision to bring both West and East resources to build all the many infrastructures you see around the country. Housing Estates, Akosombo Dam, various factories producing everything or goods you can think of. During Dr Nkrumah's time Ghana never imported any except oil.

Yet, NPP came to power and sold all the houses Dr Nkrumah built for themselves. Remember those bungalows NPP sold? Yes those properties should never had been sold, because they Ghana Government owns.

Unfortunately, people like you and your ye akan fuo are so greedy and that is how the country will remain backwards. Go and do proper learning of your country's history before you write.

Didn't Kwame Nkrumah surround himself with uneducated people like Krobo Adusei so that Nkrumah would be god among his cabinets? Nkrumah was selfish and mean politician. If Nkrumah had implored the help of few educated Ghanaians in his administration, Ghana would have been better than this. Nkrumah and his CPP elites looted the treasury of Ghana like P/NDC are doing now. If any other person had been in helms of affairs of Ghana political affairs at that time, I bet you Ghana might like Singapore, South Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan etc. These countries were better than Ghana at that time. For the simple reason they had well meaningful leaders to lead them, look at where they are now.

Nkrumah did something for Ghana. No doubts about that. Every district in Ghana had a secondary school. But we should not forget to talk about his bad sides. I believe, it had been any other person like JB Danquah or Busia who led Ghana at that time, Ghana would have been in a better place.

Nkrumah behavior made 1966 coup justified. Since these useless soldier tasted power and saw that it was sweet, these useless Ghanaian soldiers continued to staged coup, which has rendered our country in a deplorable conditions now. If Nkrumah had been inclusive, perhaps there would had been any coup in Ghana.

It was Nkrumah disastrous governance that pave way for tribal king Rawlings to steal power for further destruction of Ghana. So, Nkrumah worshippers should know that Nkrumah was not so good for Ghana.

They both did what they can giving the situations they were faced with and the opportunities or challenges they faced at that moment. Mandela's era was paved by the successes of Nkrumah and earlier freedom fighters, however, Mandela and other southern African leaders were faced with whiteb settler domineers who were entrenched and philosophicall were not and had no intention to leave or move from the Southern Africas. Hence, the liberation of South Africa, Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and even Kenya were more bloody than Gold Coast (Ghana). Under the circumstace where we had a white dominant settlers who had no place to depart to, Mandela's racial reconciliation policy was more welcoming and solidified the South Africa industrially and politically than Nkrumah and others whose philosophies were Africanization of their nations. In the longer run South Africa, Namibia, Losotho, Kenya are better with political and industrial democracies than Ghana and others. Hence, Mandela inherited a situation that required a much more bloddy revolution and guerrila fighting than Ghana. Today South Africa is more of a tecnological partner to Ghana even though we were first to achieve independence.

With all the media hype both locally and internationally about the greatness of Mandela, I was beginning to wonder whether I am alone in not believing a word of it or whether I was beginning to lose my sanity. However, I get reassured when I realize that great minds like Prof. Akosa, Kwesi Pratt Jr and Kwaku Baaku also think like me.

We don't need them to tell us the difference. We Africans, including Madiba himself know the difference, and the difference is widly showcased in Addis Abbaba.

The racial reconciliation stands Mandala took was right, they used that tatic to allow the ruling White South Africans to expose them to the governing structures of the Country, but that peaceful co-existence will not last five years after the death of Mandela, and Mandela himself knew it before his death.

All the praises that the Western World is singing are meant to solidify the reconciliation after Mandela's death but it will not work. Black South Africans are still poor, and the masses led by Malema, if not Zuma, will rise-up to fight for their rights after Madiba's burial - mark my words, it will not be more than 3 years when we all shall witness the ugly events ufolding one by one!

He couldnt go to jail for twenty seven years for his people. The British were not anywhere as ruthless as those Whites from south Africa.most of the prominent ghanaians who died are the very ones Nkrumah jailed.The west is praising Mandela because he deserves it. The whole world including Africa left south Africa alone for all those years during their struggles and rightfully deserves any credit. The problem i have with my country men is that we set the bar so low by trying to compare everything to Nkrumah and his era.There was a reason why Nkrumah was overthrown by his people while south Africans and the world hail Nelson Mandela. Just understand that each had their place in history but some worked harder than others.There remain more work to be done on the continent but a great work should always be acknowledge irrespective of a persons country of origin.The black stars are a soccer power house in Africa and no african country denies that why should you deny nelson Mandela for being a true citizen of the world? other great Africans who fought tirelessly are Jomo Kenyatta ,Patrice Lumumba and the likes of Steve Biko.some are so so fascinated with Nkrumah to the point that nothing else need to be done to improve upon whatever he left behind. S.A. continue to improve and its amazing that he was never sent to the west for healthcare whereby if it were to be our Ghana the president would have been sent outside with a host of delegates. I can assure you that it has not crossed any of the minds of Obama and the rest that Africa sees Nkrumah as the greatest liberator till date. Nkrumah was a great thinker who was ahead of his time but greatness is also judged to a large extent as to how one is perceived by his own people and how that vision is brought to fruition. Getting to the latter years of Kwame Nkrumah's rule, he was unpopular in Ghana. I leave Dr Akosah to deliberate on why this was the case.
Mandela knew that it it was the right thing to do to step down and advise behind the scene. That is the mark of a great man. Kwame Nkrumah like Mugabe fell out with all those he started the struggle with.It is not a mark of greatness to let your house fall apart.
Mandela is not being hailed as the greatest African ever but is being seen as the greatest man in the world so the comparison is jaundiced.

Me think the two are heroes of our time, they did so well for black emancipation in different capacities that shook the western world. Methods and approaches is what sets the two apart, while Nkrumah's fight was centered on 'Self Rule' which meant economic liberations for African people everywhere in Africa, Mandela's struggle was for Black-White equality in South Africa and by extention Black everywhere around the world. This is why Barrak Obama claimed to be a beneficiary of Mandela's struggle which when set side by side with Nkrumah's fights for self rule and economic independent for Africans; Mandela's struggles eventhough South African focused, has more global effects on all blacks around the world than Nrumah's. Nevertheless the two are the greatest of our time and should be recognised for their individual archivements for black wherever they may live. GOD BLESS AFRICA.

They continued to be nationalistic - forgetting what Nkrumah said: that the independence of Ghana would mean nothing, unless is it is linked up with the total liberation of the whole continent and it's islands. The treasure, time and energy he devoted to his continentalist aspirations are incalculable. Can you estimate the amount of money he expended to shore up freedom fighters?, including Mandela's ANC.
All the nations in Africa who were helped to gain their freedoms need to unite so that Nkrumah's mission would be accomplished.
And the CPP vanguards and Ghanaians should not forget to remind Angolans, Burkinabes, Chadians, Kenyans, Nigerians, South Africans, Ugandans, Zambians, etc. that Nkrumah' s continental mission is stlll a target to be completed. Failure to do that is to further balkanize the continent into micro-nations of weak tribes.

Beside that Nelson MANDELA had protected the interests of white pigs and that's why they are celebrating him that way. All the westerners who attended his funerals backed and fully supported apartheid and we know that. Only Israel was honest enough to desist from attending the funerals maybe also because they are ashamed and they couldn't look at the faces of South Africans. By the time Nkrumah was overthrown, the average Ghanaian was far worse economically than when the Gold Coast was under colonial rule.
I know for a fact that Prof Akosah was a strong beneficiary of Nkrumah's rule. His father, JC Akosah, was the District Commissioner (the equivalent of a Presideing Member of a District Assembly) at Mampong, Ashanti. As a result he was fed with a silver spoon, including the best education in Ghana and overseas. I know because I'm a native of the area, and I was in college at that time.
Nkrumah was a great man, but his impact around Africa and the world was minimal. Mandela's impact, on the other hand, is universal - and mind you, I'm a very proud Ghanaian.

My father was a friend of Nkrumah and followed him to Ghana to fight for independence. There were so many people behind the scene for Nkrumah but his biggest problem was he deviated from the plan and turned on his people.He couldnt take criticism either. This discussion is irrelevant! These two Africans live in two vast different eras. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was educated in the West and had ambitions that was unattainable looking at the African educational development then in the mist of sea of colonialism.
Mr. Mandela was absent during the information technology revolution and forth for desegregation and integration of his country men.
He was able to forgive his jailers and oppressors, Kwame Nkrumah jailed his opponents and political nemesis. Mandela embraced free market enterprise while Kwame Nkrumah embraced one party state and central economic planning(socialism).
So these two great African statesmen come from two different background with different exposure and experience. Mandela became more matured and measured because the circumstances in South Africa is different. He has a multi-racial society to deal with and a chaotic tribal rivalry as well as internal political wrangling to maneuver. He also had a ticking wave of bloodshed that he had to avert (black revenge on whites) which Kwame Nkrumah did not had to deal with in his experience. Nelson Mandela had a lot of personal failure but not political failure, while Kwame Nkrumah had a lot of political failure because of his ambition to unite Africa at the expense of Ghana. Nelson Mandela directed his energy to make the South African a much better place.
They both fought a good to etched their names on the pedestal of the African history.

You can not say one is better than the other, they are both better in their own ways and the world is such a better place because of them.

Madiba did not fail to extract more form the white south african, what he did was to ensure that every south African Black or white would at least have an equal opportunity in life, of course it was an idea but a damn good one.

The same can be said of Osagyefo, he could have done more so could Madiba. Let's be happy that because of these persona sacrifices of these two Africa is what it is today.

What makes Nkrumah greater than Mandela? Is Nkrumah's greatness in setting up the OAU, talking about African unity? Frank think, and be objective...no human being is perfect, but please stop crying because the whole world is praising Mandela. How true are these ideals even in 2013. And these were Nkrumah's opinion way back in 1961 (as written in his book "I Speak of Freedom").

Again this is what Nkrumah said on the eve of Ghana's independence in 1957;

"Our independence is meaningless unless it is linked up with the total liberation of the African continent".

I ask again, what did Mandela do for the Africa continent? Someone show me.

As of 2000, we all knew that Mandela had spent 27 years in jail and was present of South Africa from 1994 - 1999.

Despite knowing all these, Africans chose Nkrumah over Mandela as their man of the millennium.

So my question is what did Mandela do for Africa after 1999 when he left over to be referred to as the greatest African by Obama.

It is abundantly glaring that brother Obama really has no deeper knowledge of the history of Africa.

Kwame Nkrumah went further, he personally took this to a whole new level by saying Ghana's independence is meaningless unless linked up with the total liberation of the whole continent.Don't forget Nkrumah is a smart Guy, he did not say this just by mouth, but was actually supportive of other countries to gain in independence, he also saw to it that most students from many African countries were given scholarships to study in Ghana including South Africa. Don't forget he studied in America was enlighted and had wanted to build not only Ghana but Africa on model of United States of America, but unfortunately wasn't allowed by his detractors. Till this day I don't know of any leader who has physically added to the geographical size of their country than Nkrumah, this Guy is a genuis and as such the rest of continent has thought and conferred on as the man of the century for Africans. If Ghana doesn't stand up for the true history of the continent, the role we played and that of Nkrumah in particular, master, no one else on the continent will blow our trumpet for us. It is our right place in history to own what is ours and not subjugate it to others.

We earned it and we must keep it.

Listen to what Nkrumah said on 5th March, 1957.

"We are going to see that we create our own African personality and identity. We again rededicate ourselves in the struggle to emancipate other countries in Africa; for our independence is meaningless unless it is linked up with the total liberation of the African continent."

In 1961, Nkrumah wrote in his book (I Speak of Freedom)

Check your history, talk to your grandparents and parents. Kwame Nkrumah used the little resources to support Liberations movements across Africa! Most South African freedom fighters from Angola to Mozambique, lived and thrieved in Ghana. The most notable one of them is Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe.

Before Mandela there was Kwame Nkrumah, Sekou Toure, Jomo Kentatta and others. The french colonials destroyed everything they could not physically remove and they back to France when Sekou refused to join the puppet monetary Union under France.
Newly independent Ghana (just two years old) had to save Guinea.
Obama obviously doesn't know much about African History.
Nelson Mandela was a great revoluntionary in turning the political reality of Blacks in South Africa. Again don't forget the others Walter Sissulu and Oliver ThamBo etc who spent equally 27 yrs with Mandela in prison!
Does he deserve the accolade the Great Liberator of the 21st century??? The jury is out.!

He saw anybody who disagreed with him as enemies. He tortured and molested his political opponents even to the point of death. He was so vindictive, autocratic and above all felt he knew everything. He even betrayed those who brought him into the political limelight. He couldn't live at peace with his colleagues hence his inability to develop Ghana to the level that he wanted. Unlike Nkrumah, Mandel was more accommodating and by so doing brought about peace and unity. So how do you expect any level headed person not to describe Mandel as the greatest. Remember those praising Mandela include Obama who himself is black African so there is nothing about white hatred for blacks here.

Nkrumah's own party can come to power even though they have put him center page in all elections. Why? Because even the people of Ghana don't recognize him as transcendental. He did his piece, but he killed and imprisoned his peers and opponents. He made Ghana a one party state, built statues of himself and put his effigy on the local money.

He did great but he had ENORMOUS help. What was he or anybody supposed to do with all the money he inherited? And what shows that anybody would have done less with what he had? A great Pan Africanist, YES. But he wasn't better than JJ or K4 in terms of administering the country.

Communists like Akosa and Kwesi Pratt will always love him and that is okay. But for those who he murdered and maimed, no way.

If Nkrumah was in mandela's shoes what would he have done? Perhaps a civil war would still be raging. The whites and NKATA's would still be battling him. Mandela is a leader of all ages, and he ruled at a time when there was dissent thru. Internet and modern media.

Nkrumah was a megalomaniac, and that suits some people.He used to ask the press to cover him as he lazed about the beach claiming he was praying, fasting and meditating for Ghana. That is what has ingrained him in Akosa and Kwesi Pratt's mind. I mean can you imagine that?

Professor Akosa is entitled to his opinion because this conversation centers on the achievements of two giants of African independence! To say that one man's accomplishments totally eclipse the others'is just an attempt to impose your opinion as fact which is just not reality. There is no way to downplay the fire that Mandela ignited throughout South Africa culminating in the dismantling of Apartheid, one of the greatest impositions of western hegemony of the 20th century?! Was it any less than that? Of course not and neither was the accomplishment of bringing about Ghana's independence breaking the hold of western dominance that gripped that country for centuries. They are both men to be recognized and the fact that Nkrumah did not receive the same level of adulation by the west when he died is not to be ignored but it does not justify trying to downplay the achievements of Madiba either, simply put. Just some food for thought on a heated yet relevant and necessary conversation. Both men should be recognized by black people world wide as heroes and there is enough room in the annals of history for that to be the proper perspective to place them both in!
