Homosexuality In Ghana: An Increasing Growth In Numbers

On the 1st of September 2006, Mr. Kwamena Bartels, Minister of Information in the Kufuor government, warned that government would like to make it absolutely clear that it would not permit a proposed gay conference anywhere in Ghana. He explained that unnatural carnal knowledge is illegal under the criminal code in Ghana. Homosexuality, lesbianism and bestiality are, therefore, offences under the law.

The government succeeded in banning Prince McDonalds, the leader of the organisation of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and trans-sexuals in Ghana, to hold a gay conference at the Accra International Conference Centre and later in Koforidua.

Some people make the claim that homosexuality (sexual relations between people of the same sex) became known in Ghana when tourists, international workers and even missionaries flooded the country in the 70s. Those within the group who were homosexuals invited innocent boys to their houses, flushed them with gifts and money and promised to send them to the rich countries. This was one of the ways they used to have anal intercourse with the innocent boys. This continued and most of them became addicted to it. These children kept quiet over this for a very long time. Most students began to confess when a Peace Corp volunteer was deported from Ghana for wounding the anal cavity of a young student. Since then the homosexuals have been under severe social pressure since homosexuality is considered a taboo in Ghana. Many Ghanaians went abroad and returned as homosexuals. Many also went to prison and indulged in gay habits which became habitual, and followed them even after their release from prison.

Girls also pick it from boarding secondary schools. Senior girls have their "supi" and only God knows what they do with them. There are now gay prostitutes in Ghana.

Some people claim that homosexuality is not a disease and it cannot be cured. They claim, further, that even though somebody can entice you to have anal intercourse that cannot make you a homosexual. One is born that way. However, another school of thought insists that one can be addicted through being enticed to practice it.

There is a lot of prejudice against homosexuals in Ghana but our country is not alone in Africa with such attitudes. Mugabe was known to have said that "even dogs won't do such a thing". A Kenyan member of parliament was quoted as saying homosexuality is so unAfrican that we don't even have a name for it. The Ugandans have tightened the law against it even talking about death sentence for homosexuals and making it an offence for hiding a homosexual or knowing about such a person and not reporting it. As for the Arab countries in Africa, the less said about them the better. They do it in hiding even though their religion expressly forbids it. Also in Africa, many people believe that it is the person who is penetrated who is gay, not the penetrator.

The laws of Ghana do not accept homosexuality. These laws have generated general dislike among the citizens concerning homosexuals who are considered repugnant in the society. They are discriminated against. As a result of this, there are many gays in Ghana who are caught in a feeling of loneliness, shame and desperation. They are aware that their condition cannot be healed by any pastor. This sense of shame, desperation and discrimination, according to the British magazine Capital Gay, compelled a gay from Ghana on the 21st October 1994 to seek asylum in South Africa.

According to Gayghana.com, a website for Ghanaian homosexuals, out of the 200,000 gays in Ghana,forming about one percent of the total population in Ghana, only 40,000 gays have registered at the website. Homosexuality is on the increase in Ghana despite police brutality against homosexuals who are arrested and brought to the police stations.

Some people argue whether Ghana as a nation should not be dragged to the United Nations for human rights violation. Ghana’s laws make same-sex sexual activity officially illegal. Gay men can also be punished under provisions concerning assault and rape only if in public or with minors. This means anal sex practised in private between adults is not punishable. In Ghana's criminal code of 1960-chapter 6, sexual offences, Article 105 states: "whoever is guilty of unnatural carnal knowledge -a) of any person without his consent- is guilty of first degree felony. b) of any person with his consent or any animal, is guilty of a misdemeanour. This criminal code, embedded in the constitution of Ghana, is used by modern day prosecutors, who extend the 1960 law to include same-sex sexual practices.

Ghana is a democratic state that allows for freedom of expression but is careful not to link it with freedom of choice. The former is very much respected by all Ghanaians but the latter, which allows everyone to be what he is, is frowned upon by all. This attitude is in contravention of United Nation's declaration of human rights which states that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. The declaration continues that all human beings are endowed with reason and conscience.

I believe many will agree with me that no matter how many laws or declarations are made in favour of gays, Ghanaian laws will continue to make the activities of gays officially illegal.

To fall in line with the U.N declaration of human rights:
1. We should remove from our statutes, all laws that can be interpreted as making homosexuality a crime.
2. Discrimination against someone for his or her sexual preferences should be made illegal where the sex is between two consenting adults.
3. Public attitudes should change. For instance, teachers in state schools shall not be allowed to teach hatred based on a person's sexual preferences.

But attitudes are changing in Ghana too. Not long ago, there were no gay clubs, organisations, activities, etc. in our country. But now there are many with university students leading the way. Ghanaian youth have a more favourable attitude to gays than the old - the same trend found in other countries too. But it is today still difficult for prominent Ghanaian gays to come out and a politician who is known to be gay will never be voted for. But it cannot be so that there are no prominent men in Ghana who are gay. There must be as there are in all societies. After all, some of the most gifted and most brilliant persons in the world are gays. The well-known Ghanaian philosopher, cultural theorist and novelist, Anthony Kwame Appiah, currently the Laurance S. Rockefeller Professor of Philosphy at Princeton University, is openly gay. What is wrong with that?

Even though homosexuality is still a crime in Ghana and across much of Africa, Ghanaians must be tolerant towards the homosexuals' freedom of choice as enshrined in the United Nation's declaration of human rights.

A respected Man of God whose church has a large following has confessed that he likes having anal sex with men although he has a girlfriend he bonks often.

Pastor Marvin Brown, also known as ‘Prince Mark’, leader of the New Jerusalem Religion at Tema Community 4 in the Greater Accra Region, made the surprising confessing about his sex life after he was arrested based on allegations that he had had anal sex with a 14-year-old boy and infected the victim with a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD).

Though the young boy is reported to have alleged that Pastor Mark had anal sex with him on five different occasions, the accused has described the allegation as an exaggeration.

According to the pastor, it was just once that he had a ‘quickie’ with the 14-year-old boy and it was done under the influence of alcohol: “Realizing that my libido was high, I decided to masturbate; and after a while when I realized that I was about to come, I rushed and inserted the tip of my penis into his anus where I ejaculated and that was all,” Pastor Prince Mark was quoted by DAILY GUIDE as saying.

Asked why he bonked the poor lad, the pastor explained that he went out with the teenager to have fun and took some alcohol which angered his libido. The pastor said when they returned home, his libido was still high so he phoned his girlfriend to come over for some hot bouts but she refused with an excuse that it was late.

Pastor Prince Mark said it was at that point that he decided to masturbate as a way of subduing his untamed libido and making his manhood quiet and sober but ended up grabbing the innocent teenage boy and pushing the tip of his penis into the boy’s anus just when he was about to ejaculate.

Pastor Prince Mark is currently being investigated by the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Tema Regional Police Command after his alleged anal sex with the minor was reported to them.

The pastor disclosed further that although he had had sex with several men, he was always on top and the one who inserted his penis into his partners. He said no one had ever bonked him although he had bonked several men.

Though Pastor Prince Mark noted that all his sex partners were outside the country, his 14-year-old accuser claims he had seen the pastor having sex with a man right here in Ghana.

The boy is a member of Prince Mark’s church and was staying with him because school was on vacation. It was the boy’s father, also a member of the church, who agreed that the child should spend the vacation with the Pastor.

He never told his parents of his alleged five bouts of anal sex with the pastor until he started to fall sick and allegedly tested positive for HIV.

A Tema-based man of God, Pastor Marvin Brown alias Prince Mark, has been arrested by the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Tema Regional Police Command for having carnal knowledge of a 14-year-old member of his church, resulting in the boy acquiring HIV.

Pastor Brown, the Spiritual Head of the New Jerusalem Religion at Tema Community 4, allegedly sodomised the boy on five occasions and warned him not to disclose the act to anyone or else he would die.

The Tema Regional Police PRO, ASP Olivia Turkson confirmed the arrest of the suspect to DAILY GUIDE yesterday.

She said the pastor was arrested after the parents of the Class 4 pupil of a Tema basic school reported the incident to the police.

Sources close to the family told the paper that they suspected the pastor might have infected the boy with HIV after the boy tested positive for the deadly disease.

The pastor, during interrogation by the police, admitted sodomizing the boy but denied that he had sex with the teenager five times.

He said it occurred only once under the influence of alcohol after an outing with the victim who was living with him in his house.

The father of the victim was said to have joined the New Jerusalem Church and later became friends with the pastor.

The victim subsequently became a member too when his father went with him to fellowship.

The pastor, sometime in November last year, requested the father of the 14-year-old to allow his son to come live in his house anytime school was on vacation, to which the victim’s father agreed.

The pastor was said to have used some games on his laptop and mobile phone to entice the boy, after which he lured him into his bedroom where he had unprotected sex with him.

The father later realized that his son frequently fell ill after he had returned from the pastor’s house. The man sent his son to the hospital and after a series of medical tests, it was confirmed that the boy was HIV positive.

The parents were tested too by the same medical facility and were found to be negative, raising fears that the victim might have been infected by the ‘man of God’, especially after he mentioned to his parents that he had been sodomized five times by the pastor.

The pastor was subsequently arrested by the police upon a complaint by the parents.

Pastor Prince Mark admitted in his explanation that he sodomised the boy, but insisted it occurred only once.

He told DAILY GUIDE that he was bisexual and therefore had sex with both men and women.

He also mentioned that his libido got high anytime he drank alcohol.

According to him, on the day he sodomised the victim, he had gone out with the victim and his female secretary where he drank Guinness and Malt.

He explained that later when he and the victim got back to his house, he felt like having sex, so he called his girlfriend who was based in Accra to come over to his place, but she declined to do so, with an explanation that it was too late.

“Realizing that my libido was high, I decided to masturbate; and after a while when I realized that I was about to come, I rushed and inserted the tip of my penis into his anus where I ejaculated and that was all,” he remarked.

Asked if he had on any occasion had sex with any man apart from the victim, he answered in the affirmative and added that it happened so many times but outside Ghana.

“I must say that all the times that I have had sex with men I was always on top and not down,” he pointed out and explained that he always penetrated and had never been penetrated by any man before.

He indicated that he had tested negative for HIV some time ago but did not know his current status.

But the victim said the pastor was economical with the truth, having sighted the man of God and his friend having sex in the pastor’s house.

Pastor Prince Mark, who has his advertising boards scattered around Tema, especially around the Community 1 area, was being detained to help the police in their investigations.

Ghana has been named as the African country with the most registered homosexual ‘hopefuls’ seeking expatriate partners. This is according to an online website that is ripe with homosexual information.

A statement on accraexpats.com by a contributor, Andy S, stated that though Ghana was not an African gay paradise, there may be many desperate young men who were looking for greener pastures.

“Dating sites are the most frequently used ways to meet a (potential) lover or gay guide in a foreign country. At sites like Outpersonals or Gaydar, you will find that Ghana is the country in Africa with the most registered hopefuls.”

“No other country in Africa has so many boys and men looking for a partner on Outpersonals with picture (often naked) than Ghana. Does this mean Ghana is the Gay paradise in Africa? No...! It may mean that there are plenty young men desperate enough to seek greener pastures elsewhere and who are developed enough to have access to the internet and a digital camera,” Andy added.

Accraexpat.com, a homosexual online site, provides information about Ghanaian homosexuals to expatriates who seek black partners for fun, as well as serious relationships. Just like a tour guide, the website gives detailed information on the homosexual landscape in Ghana.

Right from the ‘illegal’ nature of the act in the country to the various scams that some ‘hopefuls’ engage in to make quick money, the site presents expatriates all there is to know about the Ghanaian homosexual community.

“Our welcome must, however, come with a word of caution. South Africa is the only African country to recognise same-sex relationships and is the only nation on the continent where engaging in homosexual activity is not a crime. Therefore, in Ghana as in all other African countries, be very, very careful,” the site’s welcome statement said.

Other cautions intimated: “many of the men and boys you see on these sites are not even gay or bisexual. Some just pretend to be gay and will have sex for money. Others are just "online gay", that is, they will tell you hot sexy stories after which they will ask for your financial support (need a phone to call you, mother being sick, brother dead etc.). Once you arrive, they will vanish in thin air. The name and address they give are fake. Often the pictures are fake too. They copied it somewhere from the net.”

“But that is not even the worst form: The next category are the ones who will meet you and maybe even have sex with you - an act which will be interrupted by a "policeman" knocking on your hotel room door. Blackmail is for some a quicker way to get the cash they're after. Often the policeman is a fraud but sometimes even the police is actually involved. Corrupt policemen are just part of the extortion plot. If you don’t cough up the money, you will land in prison, plus the embarrassment of the story in the newspapers. After all, gay sex is considered illegal in Ghana under the "unnatural carnal knowledge" phrase”.

The site also has a detailed eighteen (18) point list of likely gay hangouts with particular days when gays socialise. Among such hangouts are Rhapsody’s at Accra Mall, Chester’s in Osu, Coconut Groove on ring road, Le Reeve in circle and University of Ghana, Legon.

The site also highlights certain locations in Accra which are tagged “no-go zones” for expatriates due to the “very dangerous” nature of such areas. One of such “very dangerous” areas in Accra is Christian village located in Achimota.

“Especially watch out for Christian Village (Achimota): this has really become a no-go zone. Very dangerous. Also see the fakers2go website on this” it warned.

With public debates on gay rights still raging on, activities of gay tourist sites adds to the woes of the country on its actual stance on homosexuality.

Mali at first glance seems a most unlikely place for the NATO powers, led by a neo-colonialist French government of Socialist President Francois Hollande (and quietly backed to the hilt by the Obama Administration), to launch what is being called by some a new Thirty Years’ War Against Terrorism.

Mali, with a population of some 12 million, and a landmass three and a half times the size of Germany, is a land-locked largely Saharan Desert country in the center of western Africa, bordered by Algeria to its north, Mauritania to its west, Senegal, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Niger to its southern part. People I know who have spent time there before the recent US-led efforts at destabilization called it one of the most peaceful and beautiful places on earth, the home of Timbuktu. Its people are some ninety percent Muslim of varying persuasions. It has a rural subsistence agriculture and adult illiteracy of nearly 50%. Yet this country is suddenly the center of a new global “war on terror.”

On January 20 Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron announced his country’s curious resolve to dedicate itself to deal with “the terrorism threat” in Mali and north Africa. Cameron declared, “It will require a response that is about years, even decades, rather than months, and it requires a response that…has an absolutely iron resolve…” [1] Britain in its colonial heyday never had a stake in Mali. Until it won independence in 1960, Mali was a French colony.

On January 11, after more than a year of behind-the-scenes pressure on the neighboring Algeria to get them entangled in an invasion of its neighbor Mali, Hollande decided to make a direct French military intervention with US backing. His government launched air strikes in the rebel-held north of Mali against a fanatical Salafist band of jihadist cutthroats calling itself Al-Qaeda in the Islamic-Mahgreb (AQIM). The pretext for the seemingly swift French action was a military move by a tiny group of Islamic Jihadists of the Tuareg people, Asnar Dine, affiliated with the larger AQIM. On January 10 Asnar Dine – backed by other Islamist groups – attacked the southern town of Konna. That marked the first time since the Tuareg rebellion in early 2012 that Jihadist rebels moved out of traditional Tuareg territory in the northern desert to spread Islamic law to the south of Mali.

As French journalist Thierry Meyssan noted, French forces were remarkably well prepared: “The transitional President, Dioncounda Traore, declared a state of emergency and called to France for help. Paris intervened within hours to prevent the fall of the capital, Bamako. Far-sightedly, the Elysée had already pre-positioned in Mali troops from the 1st Marine Infantry Parachute Regiment (“the Colonials”) and the 13th Parachute Dragoon Regiment, helicopters from the COS (Special Operations Command), three Mirage 2000D’s, two Mirage F-1’s, three C135’s, a C130 Hercules and a C160 Transall.” [2] What a convenient coincidence.

By January 21 US Air Force transport planes began delivering hundreds of French elite soldiers and military equipment to Mali, ostensibly to roll back what we were told was an out-of-control terrorist advance south towards the Mali capital. [3] French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told media the number of its ‘boots on the ground’ in Mali had reached 2,000, adding that “around 4,000 troops will be mobilized for this operation,” in Mali and outside bases. [4]

But there are strong indications the French agenda in Mali is anything but humanitarian. In a France 5 TV interview, Le Drian carelessly admitted, “The goal is the total reconquest of Mali. We will not leave any pockets.” And President Francois Hollande said French troops would remain in the region long enough “to defeat terrorism.” The United States, Canada, Britain, Belgium, Germany and Denmark have all said they would support the French operation against Mali. [5]

Mali itself, like much of Africa is rich in raw materials. It has large reserves of gold, uranium and most recently, though western oil companies try to hide it, of oil, lots of oil. The French preferred to ignore Mali’s vast resources, keeping it a poor subsistence agriculture country. Under the deposed democratically-elected President Amadou Toumani Toure, for the first time the government initiated a systematic mapping of the vast wealth under its soil. According to Mamadou Igor Diarra, previous mining minister, Malian soil contains copper, uranium, phosphate, bauxite, gems and in particular, a large percentage of gold in addition to oil and gas. Thus, Mali is one of the countries in the world with the most raw materials. With its gold mining, the country is already one of the leading exploiters directly behind South Africa and Ghana. [6] Two thirds of France’s electricity is from nuclear power and sources of new uranium are essential. Presently, France draws significant uranium imports from neighboring Niger.

Now the picture gets a little complex.

According to usually reliable former US military experts with direct familiarity with the region, speaking on condition of anonymity, US and NATO Special Forces actually trained the same “terrorist” bands now justifying a neo-colonial US-backed invasion of Mali by France. The major question is why would Washington and Paris train the terrorists they are now acting to destroy in a “war on terror?” Were they really surprised at the lack of NATO loyalty from their trainees? And what is behind AFRICOM’s American-backed French takeover of Mali?

Why are some people afraid of those in the Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual community? From where I sit, there are a host of behavior God and his son Jesus abhors. In each of those character traits that Christians are forewarned about, pastors/clergies and their congregants alike along with politicians have consistently ignored as if those warnings from the Christian God are irrelevant or unattainable.
As a society we have chosen to do what we want including the option to steal, murder and commit diabolical crimes to get rich and or defile spouses of others and even children. We have brought upon ourselves a lifestyle some now deem unacceptable. Who are those fools who do not obey God’s principle and acceptable living but have the nerve to condemn others in the gay community?
To me the gay lifestyle and the diseases thereof has become what I term the faithfulness test to those professing to be heterosexual. If a man is faithful along with his spouse or partner they should not have anything to worry. It is for those in the community who think they can get away with adulterous practices who cannot hide anymore and that should be good for both men and women with morals. For those who will do anything for money, HIV say “make my day”.
