I said to some friends that Rawlings will destroy himself the position he has assumed to lash successive gov'ts. Everything has it's end. I thought so and knew one day a voice of justice will speak. I knew he wont get away scot free with his brutal murderous regime he killed the Generals and the Judges for corruption and now filthy rich. The sole hauler of gold bars. He'll surely have it b4 he departs from this planet earth. For the souls of those he murdered are still crying for justice if not revenge in the grave. Plunged the entire nation into chaos and curfew, created, looted and shared the nations wealth putting the c'try into economic strife and here we're today. I always blame Kuffour's administration for doing absolutely nothing with Rawlings and his conspirators rather pampered them. Even Tchikata who was tried expensively with the Nations resources was finally pardoned. K4'S cowardice and weakness here. This is the beginning of the end of Rawlings.

  We are mistakenly and wrongly judging Rawlings'79/81 coups looking at current situation of Ghana.
  
  In those days late 1970's Ghana's socio-economic conditions were significantly dire. Extreme drought, little rains... high cost of living, high inflation, shortage/absence of basic needs... Generally, conditions were just extremely tough and the phenomenon dubbed "Kalabule" was the order of the day. Connection- "whom- you-knew" and especially "who-knew-you" - to be able access/obtain necessities, hoarding of food items, goods and reselling these at cutthroat prices(then commonly referred to as "profiteering", if my memory serves me right) were the in thing... apathy, indifference, insensitivity of the leaders to common-persons well-being and welfare, complete breakdown of law and order....unfettered, unashamed free-for-all bribery and corruption... nothing seemed to work except 'KALABULEIC' things...
  
  Something just had to be done, good or bad, to restore a semblance of political, social, economic order.
  
  The best option in those days, as a matter of fact, was a coup despite the unfortunate ill-fated consequences. In fact, those who did not welcome it were those who were profiting from the general disorder and chaotic situation.
  
  THERE WAS VIRTUALLY NO ECONOMIC FUTURE for the majority of citizens. The older ones amongst us in Ghana MUST tell the truth and stop painting Rawlings as evil. The negative consequences of that coup...deaths, arrests, fast trials, sometimes without following due prcess, proper court procedures, tribunals etc were an expression of the FRUSTRATIONS and ANGER of the common people.It was a collective, essentially 'mmobrowa' reaction to a fetid hapless situation!
  
  Many of those crying foul today and condemning Rawlings were all perpertrators of the arressts, the sitting judges of tribunals, identification of wrongdoers, the Kalabule practioners,fraudsters, tax-dodgers.
  
  J.A. Kufuor was appointed a Secretary (Minister) and he accepted it. Legon students screamed and bayed "let the blood to flow". They gave the life-blood to the revolution.
  
  STOP the dishonesty and disingenous talk. YOU ARE ALL AS GUILTY as many young persons of the late 70's.
  
  In my opinion, under the prevailing circumstances in the late 70's and early 80's, the coups d'etat were justified! NO TWO WAYS!!!

  Well what can I say? Unless one lived in those days, one can not make any personal judgements, I had begun my early teen years - 12, 13, 14, 15, 15 when Jerry came on the scene and saw it all, as a young and very clever boy - was one of the few fortunate to pass entry exams into the then experimental junior secondary schools, i had the ability to make informed judgement then and in my analysis, Ghana's situation was excuse my French here a big 'SHIT'. The situation was so useless and hopeless, in fact it was despicable, a free fall anarchy, no law was obeyed and people openly did things their own way to flout the laws of the country. It was such a mess and I challenge any Ghanaian who lived in those years to come clean and justify that the situation Ghana was in was the right and civilised way a group of people formed themselves into a nation state should live. It took this 27 years or so young adult to defy all odds and put his very life on the line to ensure sanity returns into the system whereas all those adult fools where happy to continue in that excuse my French again 'SHIT'.
  
  Yes like all human beings Jerry is not perfect, he made mistakes, people around him got carried away, excesses occurred, some corruptions occurred afterwards etc but I put it to all Ghanaians that if the situations was not bravely rescued by that young Jerry John Rawlings and his so called junta, Ghana would become a failed state and it would have been difficult to recover. See how Somalia is finding it difficult to walk back into civility. Ghanaians have very short memory indeed. We are ingrates, we easily forget good deeds and store others bad deeds deep inside our memories and as a result are very vengeful people. We need to change as a people else we will see no meaningful progress.
  
  If the current way of doing things and managing the affairs of state in Ghana are not reviewed and strict measures are not put in place to punish wrongdoing and promote and encourage patriotism and love for country and its institutions, I bet in some a decade or two or three, the country would be reversed to the situations it found itself in in the 70's and 80's. We must leave God out of this because he has nothing to do with our myopic and despicable and dishonest way of running our affairs; it all boils down to us, God only help those who help themselves, Amen.

  In those days late 1970's Ghana's socio-economic conditions were significantly dire. Extreme drought, little rains... high cost of living, high inflation, shortage/absence of basic needs... Generally, conditions were just extremely tough and the phenomenon dubbed "Kalabule" was the order of the day. Connection- "whom- you-knew" and especially "who-knew-you" - to be able access/obtain necessities, hoarding of food items, goods and reselling these at cutthroat prices(then commonly referred to as "profiteering", if my memory serves me right) were the in thing... apathy, indifference, insensitivity of the leaders to common-persons well-being and welfare, complete breakdown of law and order....unfettered, unashamed free-for-all bribery and corruption... nothing seemed to work except 'KALABULEIC' things...
  
  Something just had to be done, good or bad, to restore a semblance of political, social, economic order.
  
  The best option in those days, as a matter of fact, was a coup despite the unfortunate ill-fated consequences. In fact, those who did not welcome it were those who were profiting from the general disorder and chaotic situation.
  
  THERE WAS VIRTUALLY NO ECONOMIC FUTURE for the majority of citizens. The older ones amongst us in Ghana MUST tell the truth and stop painting Rawlings as evil. The negative consequences of that coup...deaths, arrests, fast trials, sometimes without following due prcess, proper court procedures, tribunals etc were an expression of the FRUSTRATIONS and ANGER of the common people.It was a collective, essentially 'mmobrowa' reaction to a fetid hapless situation!
  
  Many of those crying foul today and condemning Rawlings were all collaborators, perpetrators of the arressts, among the sitting judges of tribunals, helped in the identification of wrongdoers, the Kalabule practitioners,fraudsters, tax-dodgers....
  
  J.A. Kufuor was appointed a Secretary (Minister) and he accepted it. Legon students screamed and bayed "let the blood to flow". They gave the life-blood to the revolution.
  
  STOP the dishonesty and disingenous talk. YOU ARE ALL AS GUILTY as many young persons of the late 70's.
  
  In my opinion, under the prevailing circumstances in the late 70's and early 80's, the coups d'etat were justified! NO TWO WAYS!!!

  4. considering the gains of the coup despite its negative consequences, the indemnity clause is not out of place and a general amnesty for those involved is a pragmatic step.
  5. considering the challenges of nation building, former president Rawlings should guard his statements live a low keyed life and play the role of a statesman; he should learn from former US presidents.
  6. the mechanism for communication between former and current leaders should be strengthened to ensure stability, peace, national integration and prosperity.
  7. there should be strengthening of state institutions to perform their constitutional responsibilities so that likely of turning individuals to demi-gods is reduced

Is it by accident that after Mahama became politically powerful, especially during his time as assistant to the ailing Mills who was not himself and trusted Mahama to make many important decisions, suddenly millionaires and even billionaires have been born and 3 or more are called "Mahama" who may be family members or tribesmen. The danger is that these people walk on 2 legs and so their money is in the developed countries helping foreign economies. Do not expect our economy to grow so long as the status quo does not change. Mahama may be working against our collective interest, he is just throwing dust in our eyes and do not expect a man like jj to turn a blind eye. This is just the beginning, remember his criticisms against Mills proved to be correct after his death.

His speeches still insights or seems to instigate young soldiers to topple any government if care is not taken. He feels he is a saint and the cleverest guy in the country. Even the Ahois who supported him are now his enemies today. Rawlings should give us a break, after all NDC is struggling to find solutions to our economic problems, if he feels he has best brains and wiser than any body in the country this is the time he must advise the President and his party members who have been looting the taxpayers money.

  Regrettably many are mistakenly and wrongly judging Rawlings'79/81 coups looking at current situation of Ghana.
  
  In those days late 1970's Ghana's socio-economic conditions were significantly dire. Extreme drought, little rains... high cost of living, high inflation, shortage/absence of basic needs... Generally, conditions were just extremely tough and the phenomenon dubbed "Kalabule" was the order of the day. Connection- "whom- you-knew" and especially "who-knew-you" - to be able access/obtain necessities, hoarding of food items, goods and reselling these at cutthroat prices(then commonly referred to as "profiteering", if my memory serves me right) were the in thing... apathy, indifference, insensitivity of the leaders to common-persons well-being and welfare, complete breakdown of law and order....unfettered, unashamed free-for-all bribery and corruption... nothing seemed to work except 'KALABULEIC' things...
  
  Something just had to be done, good or bad, to restore a semblance of political, social, economic order.
  
  The best option in those days, as a matter of fact, was a coup despite the unfortunate ill-fated consequences. In fact, those who did not welcome it were those who were profiting from the general disorder and chaotic situation.
  
  THERE WAS VIRTUALLY NO ECONOMIC FUTURE for the majority of citizens. The older ones amongst us in Ghana MUST tell the truth and stop painting Rawlings as evil. The negative consequences of that coup...deaths, arrests, fast trials, sometimes without following due prcess, proper court procedures, tribunals etc were an expression of the FRUSTRATIONS and ANGER of the common people.It was a collective, essentially 'mmobrowa' reaction to a fetid hapless situation!
  
  Many of those crying foul today and condemning Rawlings were all collaborators, perpetrators of the arressts, among the sitting judges of tribunals, helped in the identification of wrongdoers, the Kalabule practitioners,fraudsters, tax-dodgers....
  
  J.A. Kufuor was appointed a Secretary (Minister) and he accepted it. Legon students screamed and bayed "let the blood to flow". They gave the life-blood to the revolution.
  
  STOP the dishonesty and disingenous talk. YOU ARE ALL AS GUILTY as many young persons of the late 70's.
  
  In my opinion, under the prevailing circumstances in the late 70's and early 80's, the coups d'etat were justified! NO TWO WAYS!!!

  In those days late 1970's Ghana's socio-economic conditions were significantly dire. Extreme drought, little rains... high cost of living, high inflation, shortage/absence of basic needs... Generally, conditions were just extremely tough and the phenomenon dubbed "Kalabule" was the order of the day. Connection- "whom- you-knew" and especially "who-knew-you" - to be able access/obtain necessities, hoarding of food items, goods and reselling these at cutthroat prices(then commonly referred to as "profiteering", if my memory serves me right) were the in thing... apathy, indifference, insensitivity of the leaders to common-persons well-being and welfare, complete breakdown of law and order....unfettered, unashamed free-for-all bribery and corruption... nothing seemed to work except 'KALABULEIC' things...
  
  Something just had to be done, good or bad, to restore a semblance of political, social, economic order.
  
  The best option in those days, as a matter of fact, was a coup despite the unfortunate ill-fated consequences. In fact, those who did not welcome it were those who were profiting from the general disorder and chaotic situation.
  
  THERE WAS VIRTUALLY NO ECONOMIC FUTURE for the majority of citizens. The older ones amongst us in Ghana MUST tell the truth and stop painting Rawlings as evil. The negative consequences of that coup...deaths, arrests, fast trials, sometimes without following due prcess, proper court procedures, tribunals etc were an expression of the FRUSTRATIONS and ANGER of the common people.It was a collective, essentially 'mmobrowa' reaction to a fetid hapless situation!
  
  Many of those crying foul today and condemning Rawlings were all collaborators, perpetrators of the arressts, among the sitting judges of tribunals, helped in the identification of wrongdoers, the Kalabule practitioners,fraudsters, tax-dodgers....
  
  J.A. Kufuor was appointed a Secretary (Minister) and he accepted it. Legon students screamed and bayed "let the blood to flow". They gave the life-blood to the revolution.
  
  STOP the dishonesty and disingenous talk. YOU ARE ALL AS GUILTY as many young persons of the late 70's.
  
  In my opinion, under the prevailing circumstances in the late 70's and early 80's, the coups d'etat were justified! NO TWO WAYS!!!

  Dear Dr. Mahama. As you rightly said "in an attempt to prevent another coup factors such as corruption must be fought hard against". In other words Dr Mahama is calling for another coup. This is because corruption is very rife in Ghana. All efforts to curtail or prevent it have proofed futile over the years. Look at the resent forbes Ghana list. There is definitely some truth is this report as the authors are a credible institution.

  If there were not ever any genuine reasons for any coup, tell us or forever shut the heck up or leave J. J. alone. Use your energies and any intelligence you have to tackle the massive corruption going on now that is denying hardworking folks, from Nurses, Teachers to Doctors, their due remuneration. Look at the Economy, Sir! You are all part of the reason why J. J. comes back bellowing to rattle our quiet moments of thinking as to how to survive.
  
  Many have cited Dr. Nkrumah's dictatorial tendencies for justification for his overthrow. But recent events and declassification of CIA reports show we probably did not need the coup that toppled him, given the fact that the opposition at that time took to unjustified violence and colluded with the Colonial masters and their proxies to make Nkrumah's life sheer hell. Who would not tighten his security and deal harshly with those who want him or her dead?
  
  As much as I believe Nkrumah could have been more benign in countering his opposition, and avoiding J. B. Danquah's imprisonment, I blame the opposition for resorting to those violent acts that drove Nkrumah to that extreme.
  
  Meanwhile, the kind of corruption that Ghanaian Politicians engage in is exactly why any coup might be justified, next to dictatorship.
  
  So, Edward Mahama should come again. If Kutu's coup to oust Dr. Busia was justified, so was J. J.'s coup to rid Ghana of the resurrected corruption under Liman.
  
  I personally believe there were more than one reason for the 81 coup. Many Ghanaians have short memory. We should recall that the Liman Administration immediately began harrassing J. J. After he turned down the $100,000 plus relocation/ re-adjustment offer that Liman's Government made to the AFRC coup makers. Boakye Djan took his. This was the seed that grew the enmity that later came between these two old pals in arms. J. J. felt threatened but no one would expect him to admit that such personal threat factored into his reasons for the 81 coup. It would sound too selfish. Therefore, the more plausible reason of the growing corruption was used to justify that coup.
  
  We must understand that it could be argued by those who lost out from that coup that the reason why J. J. Did not take the monetary offer plus other Educational grants, etc., was because he had already made up his mind to sieze power again to himself. Those who know and remember the harassment he endured, however, might claim that as the act which triiggered his come back. He was kept under very intrusive vigilance, and when he complained to the Government he was rebuffed. If I were the guy that facilitated another entity's ascent to Political Power as Rawlings did with Boakye Djan only to be singled out for such restriction of freedom by that entity I might do similarly to fight to take my freedom back. Boakye Djan was a CPP sympathizer and happy to see the Abe Party rule. He also hated the fact J. J.'s refusal to take the money offered exposed him, Boakye Djan and the others who took the offer, as less patriotic. At that point, their relationship began going South.
  
  The difficulty for many to accept J. J.'s 81 coup but not others seems to me as self-serving. If we must condemn any coup, it has to be all of them. We can't pick and choose to satisfy our partisan political biases.
  
  Let no one lie that there was no steep, unbridled corruption in the young Liman Administration. The re-empowered CPP gurus thought it was time to recoupe what they lost under Afrifah and Kotoka's NLC and Busia's Progress Party. Therefore, they revived Kalabule which was the main reason that J. J. , at least, ostensibly, struck with Boakye Djan to end Kutu's reign and it's extension under Akuffo. J. J. made that resurgence of Kalabule a betrayal of the June 4th revolution, giving him some claim to a moral higher ground than the acquiescent Boakye Djan and for justifying the 81 coup. This is all very intricate entanglement needing honest and objective analysis and not to be left to the whim of those with bones to pick, grudge to bear.

The only coup that was justified was the 1966 coup against power drunk dictator Nkrumah.

  The fact we have unrepentant supporters like you of every coup that was ever carried out in the Country is why we need to set aside these self-serving comparisons now and concentrate on rebuilding Ghana with consensus. Tell those CPPians and Nkrumahists that Nkrumah's coup was justified and get their reaction. So do those who support J. J. would always vememently defend their cause.

Houphouet Boigny to whom some of our exiles, like Busia, went to seek refuge was a self-proclaimed life-time President, too. Why did the Western Powers not seek his overthrow? I dislike Dictatorship, too. But if we are judging which is better, I would prefer a civilian dictatorship with some modicum of vision and concrete achievements to a Military Dictatorship or a Pseudo-democratic civilian Administration replete with bigotry and nepotism and steeped in blatant gargantuan corruption scandals.

Tell me what economic development can we remember during PNDC/NDC,or Kuffuor administration? I don't want any answer from road construction. Every government that comes to power construct roads so forget it. I can tell you what economic development implemented by the late Dr. Limann administration that exists as at now. For 27 months in his administration, he opened 110 Rural Banks to help farmers and to generate employment opportunities. Dr. Mahama I support you and I want you to contest for 2016 and I will be there to help. I urge all Ghanaians to forget the disputes NDC/NPP and focus on PNC. PNC all the way.
