The TDC, Electricy and Water Corporations were all guilty of failing to implement proper procedures. TDC is expected to exercise surveillance over its property against intruders. The electricity and water corporations should ascertain legal occupancy of all abodes that they provide service to.
Additionally, if those of the squatters who allege that they have proper sale documents for the land DID register their land with the appropriate lands registry authority then that authority is also as guilty of sin for failing to verify ownership of the land. There was complete failure of state institutions in this sad and badly handled case.

Whiles I disagree with property owners building illegally on government or local council lands, these issues must be taken seriously without discomforting only the property owners. All public officials who by negligence and or connivance have brought about these predicaments must be punished severely to the extent of imprisonment. We cannot always blame the victims, the officials must be dealt with for sitting down for these to happen.

The residents came from somewhere and they should go back to where they came from.Tourism is the biggest industry in the world. Ghana with all year sunshine should be raking in the big dollars but we are held back because of our disorganized cities, antiquated infrastructure and poor public hygiene.

It is therefore not lawful to hurriedly overturn cooking pots, and spill the soup claiming a goat has been stolen.

Where in the world you can build on a land that is in litigation and even when a party in litigation warns you you continue to build? The time has come for Ghanaians to fight against people who with impunity perpetrate irresponsible behaviours in our society. The fact that Ghana is a police state does not mean, a police man must be with every Ghanaian to keep him from foolishness.

Kweku, for your information the TDC is asking all those who have proof of right purchase of plots to go for settlement. It will please, you to know that over a week no one has responded to this.

TDC, if it is managed by competent people, could have stopped them building on the land in the first place. It appears therefore, that the years of silence and inaction on the part of TDC suggests an implied permision was given.
My heart sank when I saw the demonilitions beamed across Internaationalnews channels.

Why should TDC exert energy and at great expense to prevent every single encroacher from occupying their property despite several warnings and public announcements? These encroachers have been given numerous warnings and tend to return after each eviction.

What more has a human face by gently warning and intruder to vacate your premise, give them time to leave and not arresting them for violating your property? In fact, you even clean up their mess on your property at your own expense.

The encroaches are well aware of the law and illegality of occupying somebody's property. Besides, Ignorance of the law is no excuse.
When has evicting an illegal occupant of a property made the illegal occupant a refugee? If Baaku means homeless, I will agree but not refugees. Be sincere or you risk tarnishing your reputation. Nobody is driving the encroaches out of Ghana. They have been evicted from illegal occupation of somebody else's property. In fact, the encroaches aught to have been arrested and made to pay for the clean up and other related administrative cost such as policing etc
I am sure Kweku Baaku would have been the very person who will complain had TDC evicted the encroaches in the past when TDC had no immediate use for the land. Now that they are ready to use the land, they spent years appealing to the squatters to leave to no avail.
Apparently, some encroachers even have documents to prove they acquired the land legally. Well, how difficult is it to acquire fake documents in Ghana? You must be having a laugh!

All that the government is responsible for is to help create an enabling environment for public and private business and lives to thrive which all governments have failed to do except that of the one we call Kwame Nkrumah's government.

TDC is not the only one guilty of this high crime. Many people's hard earned sweat have been pulled down because the country's judicial system is very corrupt. The lawyers are mercenaries and the judges can be bought with a loaf of bread. Why should a person spend $200,000 to build a house on a $10,000 plot and have it pulled down, especially when he or she purchased the land from someone whose name is registered at the land's department. All sorts of things happen in Ghana which has made many is the diaspora decide not to invest there because investing in Ghana is like catching a falling knife. If you don't grab it right you can get killed by the it!

I wonder if someone dubbed a senior journalist worth his salt will come out with this rubbish. Most Ghanaians including my good self were appalled when the news first broke-out. However, I would have expected Kweku Baako the so-called senior journalist to investigate the report and provide the public a reliable report based on his observations and devoid of any form of emotion or propaganda. According to the TDC, only 65 structures were demolished. Most of the so-called houses were uncompleted structures. When the Chief of the area -Kanawu- was interviewed he disclosed that even though they are litigating the TDC about the true ownership of the land, the land was sold by land guards to the developers. Therefore, this is where Kweku Baako goofed big time. The so-called documents allured to by Mr Document, were fraudulently obtained. Neither TDC or the so-called owners of the land sold the land to the developers, rather it was land-guards. TDC is a very massive area, therefore it's rather stretching the imagination questioning TDC's inability to have proper oversight over their land. In any case, we all know how recalcitrant Ghanaians can be at times. Needless to say that even stop work notices written in bold red paint will not deter determined persons from breaking the law believing in the myth that, once the building had reached a certain level, it cannot be demolished. I sysmpathise with the victims, but sufficed to add that crime doesn't pay. We must learn to uphold the rule of law.

Kweku Baako lives in Accra but knows nothing about Tema or TDC.The TDC is the only one out of the many created to be alive.Tema is the only town in Ghana where sensible planning is practiced,where people are not permited to wildly put up structures.Tema hasn't fallen apart like Accra,Kumasi,Takoradi,etc;thanks to TDC.Tema is the only town in Ghana that I would like to live in.Long LIVE TDC!

My worry is the fact that TDC new the residence do not have permits, they should have been prevented them from putting up permanent structures rather they encourage them to build the permanent structures only to demolish them ...

TDC must be taken on for wasting government resources. TDC must pay for all cost associated with the demolition. The residence have water and electricity on what basis were they supplied the facilities. Social exclusion, social deprivation, unemployment and poverty brings crime

If you drive along the Motorway today, you will find fresh slums developing openly which is even an eyesore, but all the BIG men who drive daily along the motorway pretend they have not seen anything wrong! The problem of urban slums and squatting anywhere in the world is a reflection of the state of that society - particularly the failure of the state to provide properly for the people, to plan its economy and infrastructure and communities properly. No one can claim to have the solution but govt should always try to resolve this situation with much compassion. Why do people flood the urban areas? I don't claim to know but it is not rocket science in Ghana to see that successive govts has abandoned the rural areas. Everything is in Accra or some Regional capital. As the PNP Presidential candidate in the last elections, Haruna Ayariga, comically pointed out, even for a business person to do business with a foreign company, he or she must travel to Accra first to chase after the required papers. Poor people, the youth, unemployed university graduates all move to Accra and other urban areas hoping to find work and better their situation. They also want to simply have the basic necessities of life such as pipe-born water and electricity.

Govt should not treat urban squatters like trash! Compassion and practical solutions are required. After all the govt chase after the elites who have stolen millions and govt land? Are their mansions demolished and property thrown away?

Over the years I have seen encroachers warned, structures destroyed, they return to continue building. I have seen two encroachers fight over the same land. Prosecute the chiefs, they sell these lands.

We all seem to agree on one issue. And that is those dwellers built their houses or setlters on TDC property and this is an illegal occupation. I have always thought there is a rule of law in Ghana. How wrong I have been. TDC took the law in to their own hands. Is this not against the laws in Ghana? I felt so ashame when a friend from Sweden called me to turn my television on for news about Ghana. Illegal occupation of properties is not only a Ghanain problem. It happens requently in other countries as well. The difference is how such problems are delt with. In the UK we have squaters. They move into empty properties,changed the lockes and live in. These properties may belong to individuals or govenment agencies or private sector. Just imagine you cannot enter your own property because it has been squartered. It does not matter how many notices and warnings you give the sqarters, you cannot go and break down the doors and go in to knock a hell out of them. Why it is your property, it is because you cannot take the law into own hands. The laws in the UK work, mind you I am not saying they are perfect. Police cannot help you. You go to court to seek redress, it is only when the court orders their eviction will police come in to enforce the eviction order. That is the difference between civilised country and a banana republic

There is no such thing as “Internal Refugees”. A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee his or her own country. Those people whose houses were demolished by TDC were not refugees; they came from the rural areas and thought they could just build their houses anywhere. They have to be told to return back to their hometowns because they are not refugees. Where in a civilized society would one migrate to a city and not have proper accommodation? People sleeping in uncompleted buildings, litter everywhere, putting up unauthorized buildings has made the city unattractive and dirty. I salute TDC for a job well done.

Does Mr. Baako understand the rule of law. The high court gave the TDC the backing to go an reclaim their land. Ghana will continue to sink if people like Mr. Baako make excuses for corruption and law breakers.

The rule of law should apply to all facet of our society, we shouldn't be selective in how we execute the rule of law. It shouldn't be used only for the convenience of the government in power.
