Why I am saying that is, if he was to not exist, Ghana wouldn`t have have ideas of corruption, drug dealings, looting the way NPPs are today. Whatever the cause of death of this Noble man, I believe the current Parliamentarians should be grateful that Men like him had to suffer the indignity of incarceration( prior to and after independence) to gain Independence for the citizens of the then Gold Coast.

I remember as a child of about 8years, flicking through the pages of the Commission of Inquiry into his death; what caught my eye was not the countless pages of witness statements but the picture of JB lying on his prison bed ( a single metal bed on what looked like a student mattress)on his right side with his Head towards the foot of the bed, dressed in a striped pyjamas. That image will remain with me for a very long time.
Ironically it was a Northern Prison warder who found him dead ( someone correct me if I am wrong)

Now, Murtala Mohammed as insensitive as he is, recalls and recounts this mysterious death under the abhorrent Preventive Detention Order as of "natural causes...and the history is there for all to see"

What claptrap, balderdash of the highest order. If he has no sensible words to say to us or assuage our grief, someone tell him to Shut up!!

It baffles my mind when I hear NDC "Apparatchiks" come on air and in the media telling such blatant lies to Ghanaians. Sometimes I think the world isn't real; the NDC believe everyone is a fool, probably in Ghana or the world, so they'd choose to spill out thrash for everyone to believe.

The economic hardship that Ghanaians are experiencing is, as I've always pointed out, the direct results of election fraud. The NDC and their scouts, esp. some pro-NDC media houses and program presenters won't want to tell the truth, but lie to the unsuspecting listening public that the mess that the nation is going through is the collective responsibility of all Ghanaians. That's absolutely crap! Unfortunately, they're the ones who're paid to bring news to the general public and the world; whatever they broadcast seem to be consumed by our brothers and sisters, mothers, fathers and uncles in small towns and villages who can't seem to get the inside scoop of reality. It's a sad situation.

People ought to be educated about what's happening in the country and what's brought us to this economic disaster. NDC colluded with the EC to cheat in the elections---it's been a cool thing for the NDC since 1992. So they think they'd always play their tricks on Ghanaians. They had the blessings of the Supreme Court to hang on to power, when Justice Atuguba read that bogus and biased verdict. People are seeing with their own eyes---for real---the repercussions of election fraud.

John Mahama and his NDC didn't have any concrete ideas to improve Ghana's economy. They thought they had the clues to govern after hearing Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia make all their promises to raise Ghanaian up and out of desperation into a prosperous country to live in with Free SHS, Transformation of our Old System of exporting Raw Materials (Guggisburg Economy) into the New-Value-Added Export Economy among others. The NDC have been in power for 5yrs and things are getting worse economically for everyone! Our Cedi is on a free fall in terms of value against other major international currencies, yet the NDC want everyone to believe that it's all well and good. They can't see their way clear in ruling or governing the country, but won't stop telling lies. It's such a pity!

Now they're in the news again telling another lies about the death of Dr. James Boakye Danquah. It's a pity for them to try to continue telling lies when it's obvious that they can't do anything better for Ghana. What a shame!

In there are people who should speak about the rule of law and human rights NPP and its members must be the last to open their mouth. In 1969 Yaa Na was murdered during PP regime led by Prof. Kofi Abrefa Busia. NPP even murdered Mr. Nkenseh Ekow Akaah a running mate to Kufuor in the Great Alliance.
What about the scores of school children who J.B. Danquah and Obetseby Lamptey assassinated and maimed with their terrorist bombs.
It is on record that the bombings in the 1960s came to a quick end as soon as the terrorist gang of Danquah, Lamptey, R.R. Amponsah and others were placed under Preventive Detention.
Let no member of the NPP rationalize the bombings of the 50s and 60s because no one has the right to bomb the churches which are also political organizations of society and invariably no one deserve the right to bomb a youth organization organized by any Ghanaian.

Now, during those hectic years in our political history, people were quick to jump and hold some innocent people responsible due to their political differences with then the president. Who prepared the flower with the bomb that was given to Nkrumah? Was it the opposition and who made the presentation? Was it the opposition? If that incident would have occurred today, deep and thorough investigation would be made to ascertain the actuality of those behind the bomb thrown at Nkrumah but some innocent people were quickly arrested and incarcerated for nothing. I wasn't there but commonsense should tell us that the opposition was not behind the kulungugu bombing but rather the "hawks" in CPP who detest Nkrumah and his policies. Think deep and draw your own conclusion. The first man who attempted to assassinate Nkrumah was Ametepe who was a guard at his residence and was he an opposition UP member? I don't think so.

One of the most distinguished sons of Ghana who died in Nkrumah’s detention was Dr. Joseph (Kwame Kyeretwie) Boakye Danquah – a scholar, philosopher, writer, journalist, lawyer, statesman and a cultivated man of many accomplishments.

Born on 21st December, 1895, at Bepong in Kwahu where his father, Mr. Emmanuel Yaw Boakye Danquah, was working as Evangelist of the Basel Mission, to his wife Lydia Okom Korantemaa of Adadientam, near Kibi, Akim Abuakwa, he completed his formal education at the University of London between 1921-27 and read Law at the Inner Temple. He was a foundation member of the West African Students Union of Great Britain and Ireland (1922) and Editor of the “WASU” Magazine between 1923 – 27. On his return to Ghana in 1927, he plunged straight into public life. He established the first daily newspaper in Ghana, the “Times of West Africa” which was published between 1930 and 1935.

He was a foundation member of the Gold Coast Youth Conference (1930) and Secretary of the “Colony” and Ashanti delegation to the Colonial Office in 1934 to make representations against the Sedition Bill of that year and ask for an improved constitution for the country.

He did not return with this delegation but continued in Britain until 1936, doing research in the British Museum in the history and traditions of the Gold Coast people. It was during this period that he traced the connection between the Gold Coast and the ancient Sudanese empire of Ghana, which has since become the name assumed by this country on independence. The efforts of Dr. Danquah brought about the legislative union between Ashanti and the southern parts of the country, then known as the Colony, in the Burns Constitution of 1946.

In 1947 he and Mr. George Alfred Grant conceived the idea of the United Gold Coast Convention to demand self-government for the country “within the shortest possible time”; he was instrumental in bringing back Kwame Nkrumah from Britain to act as the Secretary of this organisation.

Following the disturbances in February 1948, Sir Gerald Creasy, then governor of the country, arrested him and five other leaders of the United Gold Coast Convention and kept them in detention until the arrival of the Watson Commission in whose report he was named “Doyen of Gold Coast politics”

Elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1951, he became Leader of the parliamentary opposition until he lost his seat in 1954. In 1960, he contested the presidential election against Kwame Nkrumah and was defeated by the latter mainly through the rigging of the election and other irregularities.

Detained on 3 October 1961, following the strike of the Sekondi/Takoradi workers as a reaction against the budget of that year, he was released on June 20, 1962. Arrested again in January 1964, he died in Nsawam Prison on 4 February 1965, following ill-treatment and intolerable conditions imposed on him in Nsawam prison. He published many books on Akan institutions, laws and custom as well as numerous articles on contemporary events during his life time. A novelist and dramatist of no mean order, his “Third Woman” stands as a real contribution to the literature of Ghana.

The death of Dr. J. B. Danquah in Prison on the 4 February, 1965 received some prominence in the press throughout the world at the time. It is apparent also that some wild rumours about the circumstances of his death have been circulating and continue to circulate; and because of the prominence of Dr. J. B. Danquah as a national figure in the history of Ghana, it was the view of the Commission that, as in the case of Mr. E. Obetsebi-Lamptey, a considerable care and attention should be devoted to uncovering the true circumstances of his confinement and death.

It was elicited first of all that Dr. J. B. Danquah, as in the case of Mr. E. Obetsebi-Lamptey and a small group of others of the more prominent detainees, was confined in the Condemned Cells, on the Upper Landing in his case, together with condemned prisoners.

When considering the following facts it must be remembered that Dr. J. B. Danquah was a man 69 years of age at the time of his death. Dr. Danquah was arrested and detained on 8 January, 1964. He was admitted to Nsawam Prison and lodged in the Condemned Section (Special Block) in cell No. 9 on the upper landing. The cell is approximately 9 feet by 6 feet in area, secured by a solid door with a small open grille in the top half of the door and a barred window high up in the rear wall. The cell contained no bed or other furniture other than chamber pot.

For three months after admission Dr. Danquah was not issued with a bed, but first of all with only a blanket to cover the bare concrete floor. Evidence reveals that there was an order that detainees in the Condemned Cells, for a period of several months, were not allowed to stand up in their cells having to lie down or sit on the floor. The purpose of this order appears to have been to prevent each of the detainees knowing who were the others detained. This order appears to have been effective, as the evidence reveals that it was only after many months had passed before some detainees discovered who were the others detained. It is felt also that the prison officers must have laboured under some fear for all of them to have remained silent for so long.

Elaborate precautions were taken also to ensure that no detainee had contact with any member of the prisons staff who was even remotely related, or were the same tribe. In support of this we have the duty roster book of that time in which will be found set out clearly, the names of detainees and their tribes and the prisons staff and similar details.

The life of Dr. Danquah in the cells was regimented in the same manner as that of a condemned prisoner awaiting execution. Indeed, in some respects, his treatment was more rigid and circumscribed. On the few occasions when he was permitted to use the lavatory at the end of the corridor, he was escorted there and back; he was supervised while he had bath; he was issued with toothpaste and toothbrush, supervised while he cleaned his teeth; the paste and brush were then withdrawn; his cells was subjected to frequent searches; during the early part of his period of detention he was given no exercise and, later, apparently, only 15 minutes every week, although the records show this was somewhat irregular; during the early part of his detention he was allowed

no visitor nor allowed to write letters but later he was permitted a visit from his wife approximately once a month.

Throughout the confinement of Dr. Danquah, the others, the Condemned Cells continued to function as such; from time to time executions were carried out. This in itself must have been a form of refined mental torture for the inmates. Mr. E. R. T. Madjitey is recorded as saying, when he heard an execution, that he wondered when he could be executed. Mr. Tawiah Adamafio also stated in evidence when asked, “Were any executions carried out when you were in the Condemned Cells?” He answered’ “Yes, everything going on in that apartment could be heard by every inmate there. We could hear the preachers saying prayers, Holy Communion being served, and prisoners screaming”. “What impression did all that have on you?” He answered, “I kept on wondering when it would be my turn”

There is conflicting evidence in regard to the diet given to Dr. Danquah and a few of the other more prominent detainees confined in the Condemned Block. However, the Commission feels more inclined to accept the evidence of Mr. C. E. Baiden, a retired prison officer, then in charge of the Condemned Block, who says, when asked “Do you consider that in the treatment of Dr. Danquah the measures taken was in the interest of justice?” He answered, “No. The treatment given to Dr. Danquah was not good. The food was poor, and even when the doctor recommended European diet for him this was over-ruled by the Director of Prisons. The doctors’ recommendations were not carried out”. Also the evidence of Mr. Seidu Moshie, a discharged warder who was on duty in the Condemned Cells for a number of years and who is mentioned in one of Dr. Danquah’s petitions as a man who showed him some kindness. He said, “At first the detainees were served smaller quantity of food so they began to grow lean. This made the doctors to recommend the same quantity of food to be given them.”

The foregoing evidence is supported by the fact that Dr. J. B. Danquah lost 40 Ib. in weight between January 1964 and December 1964 as recorded monthly in the “Weighing Book” for condemned prisoners. A few of the other detainees confined in the condemned block lost a similar amount of weight.

It is perhaps worth noting what the nutrition officer says in her report of people whose diet is inadequate: “undernourished people are hypochondriacs and complain, even hysterically, about small or imaginary disabilities.” Dr. Danquah was obviously beginning to display such symptoms as will be seen from his petitions. Such symptoms would be aggravated by his close confinement, the irritations of rigid searches and regimented loneliness of a person in his state.

Not all of his disabilities were imagined, however, as the medical evidence clearly discloses. He was suffering from chronic Bronchial Asthma and hypertension 220/120. Without exception, all the medical witnesses confirm that the small condemned cell was not a suitable place for a man of his age, in his condition, and yet, in spite of his pleadings, verbally to doctors and prisons officers alike, and in his petitions to the Ex-President, he was not moved to the Prison Hospital. The Medical Officers and Prison Officers seemed to be too frightened or lacking in moral courage to assert their authority.
It is perhaps worthy of note that the Prison Medical Officers at this time (1964-65) were not Ghanaians, but from overseas countries whose sympathies would appear to have been with the Nkrumah regime, and none of whom

Could be consulted as then have left the country. The same situation can be said to have applied during Mr. E. O. Lamptey’s detention from October 1962 to January 1963 until Dr. F. T. Sai was called in as physician specialist and immediately ordered his removal to Korle Bu hospital in December 1962.

There is evidence that on the 30 June 1964, a prison warder 2C/E/O Dogo Moshie, with the assistance of others, placed Dr. Danquah in leg irons for a short period as a punishment for being rude to a senior officer. This has been denied, but we prefer to accept the evidence of the Assistant Director, who heard the case and who said: “I am convinced that Dr. Danquah was chained by the officers.” We do not agree with the late Director who over-ruled this finding, but agree with him when he said of Deputy Superintendent E. K. Sagoe, “I am inclined he bears the detainee (Dr. Danquah) a personal grudge. In view of this I recommended his transfer from the station.” We consider Mr. Sagoe showed a complete lack of understanding of Dr. Danquah and unkindness, to say the least, for depriving him of his one source of relaxation, his exercise, as a punishment. It is interesting to note that Mr. E. K. Sagoe was not removed from the Condemned Block until January 1965.

And this evolved system of PDA, is "the abuse and use of the police and military apparatus of the state to cower and subdue and subjugate the citizenry", into a state of docility and acquiescence without uttering a word about official and gov't inaction in addressing their needs as taxpaying hardworking Ghanaians in what can be described as "detention of the conscientious conscience" and the right of the citizenry to exercise their constitutional and fundamental human rights freely under a constitutional democracy.
The lack of tolerance and the plutonomy of the political class has bred a new form of PDA, and the masses are at the receiving end of this state of affairs, with the country further sinking gradually into the doldrums. History cannot be rewritten and the attempt by Murtala Mohammed, MP, to rubbish history is in and of itself a deviation from the human ability to exercise a sense of honesty, which is sad.
The issue therefore is to fight all forms of PDA, the one instituted by our past leaders, and to equally engage the evolved versions of PDA, which threatens to send generations upon generations into perpetual bondage, servitude and subjugation by the ruling NDC gov't.

Is there any difference between jb danquah and the devil? if Kwame Nkrumah had not caged him in prisons, he would kill more Ghanaians through bombings than he did before he was thrown into prisons. a lot of innocent Ghanaians including school, some as young as six years lost their precious lives because of this wicked man and his equally wicked and bloody people including abrefa busia,jake obetsebi lamptey,edward akuffo addo and the late father of ic quaye. ic quaye himself was said to have detonated a bomb at chorkor resulting into the killing of other Ghanaians in support of his father who also got blind whilst in detention. the children of the aforementioned bloody and demonic people are the ones leading the npp today and subjecting the country to all kinds of hell. like their late fathers, if they are not in charge of affairs, then the country should be up in flames and yet when they were given the mandate to rule, they looted our state coffers and sold to themselves, government bungalows and lands. they sold out government facilities such the Ghana telecom, Ghana westel, GNPC Drill ship and so on as if they were their personal properties. but for these dangerous human species in our mist, Ghana would have been one of the best countries in the world. because of their wicked dealings, countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, south Africa and what not, who were far far behind Ghana, have overtaken us and doing great things in their developmental agenda. they were only interested in making themselves, families and cronies good whilst the majority was left to their fate!

I do not know how old this son of a rabid bitch was in 1965 when Dr Danquah died but for him to stand in Parliament and utter this stinking lie makes me mad. Is he aware of the series of instructions that Nkrumah issued in relation to his burial and funeral...in an apparent attempt to humiliate him? Dr Danquah was not a pauper...hey, you people can do all you can to portray Nkrumah as an archangel but truth is not relative...it can never be.
