Ghanaian doctors & nurses know nothing about health. They can't even diagnose a disease nor read any information from a scan machine. They are killing Ghanaians.

You see people crossing major highways at rush hour, upwardly mobile youth are binging on high cholesterol foods, and sexing themselves like there is no tomorrow.

The junkie doctors are just a symptom of a much deeper societal ailment. We cannot cure this with religion either as some have suggested.

Pethidine, also called Demerol in US used to be and still very effective for the treatment of certain surgical pains. However, Morphine and possibly Dilaudid have been found to be even better.So Doctors can switch from Pethidine. But the main issue here, has nothing to do with the medicine and its appropriate use. If Doctors and Nurses are abusing it, they should be treated as "sick" people instead of withdrawing the Medicine. The article did not talk about patients becoming addicted to Pethidine following an appropriately prescribed regimen.

I am a part of a physician group that volunteers at Korle-Bu (orthopedic surgery) & Asylum (drug detoxification via tapering doses). The doctors I meet and interact with at these "leading institutions" are mostly inept and incompetent. They watch us with naive awe instead of learning. They are more concerned with money than best practices. Frankly, they no very little.

Health workers addictin is a serious matter which has to be dealt with. Drugs imported into the country has be strictly monitored. Pharmacies should have a central computerised system to track where every tablet goes. Are we there yet??

Two guys were picked up by the cops for selling drugs and appeared in court before the judge. The judge said:

You seem like nice young men, and I'd like to give you a second chance rather than jail time. I want you to go out this weekend and try to show others the evils of drug use and persuade them to give up drugs forever. I'll see you back in court Monday."

Monday, the two guys were in court, and the judge said to the first one:

"How did you do over the weekend?"
"Well, your honour, I persuaded 10 people to give up drugs forever."
"10 people? That's wonderful. What did you tell them?"

"I used a diagram, your honour. I drew two circles like this: O o and told them this (the big circle) is your brain before drugs and this (small circle) is your brain after drugs."
"That's admirable," said the judge. "And you, how did you do?" (to the 2nd guy)

"Well, your honour, I persuaded 50 people to give up drugs forever."
"50 people! That's amazing! How did you manage to do that!"
"Well, I used the same two circles. I pointed to the small circle and told them, 'This is your asshole before prison....

I recall the early 1970s when the "high-drug" of the day was called "madras" (if my spelling is right). The health ministry must make access to such drugs extremely difficult. That will be a starting point.

Or its abuse has caused some deaths so it should be banned? It is akin to saying that car accidents kill therefore we should ban cars. Do they kknow the use of Pethidine in surgical practice? I only hope the doctors have been misquoted.

I do not advocate its ban but curtail its use or reserve it or extremely difficult cases for the patient.

They may even suspend my license to practice. In GH, one could just walk into a pharmacy and buy controlled narcotic drugs. Wow!

Tat one is known since years. The funny thing is that the hospital knows about the addicted doctors and nurses but they don't sack them. They just transfer them to different departments. Thats Ghana for you,
