This is almost not possible so the winning party will need other party to garner for the 70% and above. Normally the biggest opposition is taken and given the position of vice president and other key positions, so the country is governed better. In Ghana the winner takes it all is what is killing us.

At a time when our finances as a country calls for leaner government to cut government expenses and reduce redundancy, the big government idea that destroyed the economy under Nkrumah is still being recycled by the adherents of Nkrumaism ideology.

Provide a mansion to the opposition leader with 40 staff members for doing just what the Professor proposed which can be done if we can reduce the political rhetoric.

Nkrumah created the PWD and the Workers brigade and employed more people than needed. A job that should be done by one person were being done by four or more people and that mentality continue to this day where as a nation of 24 million people we have close to 700,000 government workers with more than 700 Presidential staffers.

The 'biggest' opposition leader must remain opposed to the leadership to help keep Democracy alive and well. Being offered a position in Gov't is bluntly corrupt and would legalized the practice. This PROPOSAL be referred to the dust bin.

Nkrumah did his part and died years ago, so do not tell me every ensuing leader elected is inoculated in stupidity and comes only as a discordant mirth to commit nuisance.

Your very good friend Kufuor had a clan of over three hundred ministers and deputies, which additionally admitted every Ghanaian village chief to his official payroll, as well as the creation of a chieftain ministry and for what purpose but monopolized corruption. Had separate ministries for roads, minister for ports, minister for housewives etc, you name it! Nkrumah worked with less than 30 ministers and accomplished more. He rather expanded the tax base by employing more workers. Does work and happiness ring your bell? Mind you! That was not an insincere rhetoric for poverty alleviation going by kufuor's unpunished perfidy.

Without a National Plan and Agenda, we are doomed. The formulation of the National Developement Plan and Agenda should direct every ruling party. The how to get there is what should be debate between the parties and why we should vote for any particular party.

The current aproach of the winning party pursuing their own Developemnt and economic agenda is not working.

The National Development planning Commission should be revamped and empowered to hold public consultations, especially with the political parties, civil society, academia and professional bodies to draw up a national development plan for the short, medium and long term (10, 20 and 30 years). This should be agreed by all the major political parties and approved by parliament.

The plan would be implemented by government, irrespective of the party in power. This would make for continuity and coherence of policy.

The implementation of the plan should be monitored and reviewed after 8 years, and rolled forward accordingly.

What we require is all those in positions of responsibility, especially the political leaders and MPs to avoid partisanship and act responsibly.

Our President should look beyond his party to appoint the best people to ministerial positions and other leadership positions eg boards of public sector bodies.

President Mahama did promise to meet with leaders of the main political parties soon after the elections, but it appears this was obviated by the electoral dispute. I hope he makes good his promise.

Barring polarization, the Opposition members in Parliament could perform whatever functions the Professor envisages for the leader of the largest Opposition Party to help govern.

Meanwhile, the only reasons we have multi-party system is so there would be genuine competition of ideas and prevent monopoly of power to a certain clique of Politicians or ethnic groups. All talks of ideological differences are only coalescing similar ideas into a set of principles that indicate a significant departure from the others in style of governance.

So, having the leader of the largest Opposition in Government at all cost could cause lots of disruptions. Any desired compromise among the Parties for the optimum outcome could be done in Parliament, not with a single Politician for his or her ranking.

If an Opposition leader is liked by his or her own Party but widely disliked by the Population, he or she should not be foisted upon the Nation. We should not regard Politics as some fortune out of which we ought to create compensatory allowance to dole on those who failed to prove worthy just to pacify them.

Nothing hinders the incumbent Administration to ask for, or accept the Opposition's input, or the Opposition volunteering an idea to improve the Government's chances of success.

It the Professor's suggestion was to mitigate any mistrust of the incumbent by a particular large section of the Population, an invitation for consultative meetings to pick the brain of the Opposition leader on pertinent National issues would be adequate. But routine governing functions should not be handed over to anyone just because he or she is the Opposition leader. We would be opening ourselves up for easy sabotage of the incumbent.

Any inclusion in Government must be based on merit and level of shared views of how to get things done for the Nation.

Is this a quasi-Union Government proposal or what?

I really do not understand what this professor is proposing and confusing it with the UK system. In the UK the opposition leader is an MP but that is not the case in Ghana. In fact, according the NPP Constitution immediately after the elections if the party's presidential candidate did not win the presidency, s/he becomes an ordinary member of the party and not party leader. The main opposition therefore does not have a party leader until a new presidential candidate is elected. Under his proposal, would it be the Chairman of the party or Minority Leader in Parliament who will be part of government or will it still be the defeated presidential candidate who is no longer the leader of his/her party?

I do agree that there must be more consultation with the opposition, especially in parliament but I do not see how the defeated candidate can be in government. That is a recipe for disaster.

Even with the US presidential style, the party leaders in both house (Congress and the Senate) play important roles in government business but not the defeated presidential candidate. Has anyone heard about Mitt Romney after the elections? I will therefore encourage some involvement for the minority leader in parliament but not the defeated presidential candidate who longer has the mandate of the party. Prof Akosa is confused with all these unworkable suggestions.

Before running for office most parliamentarians would be residing in their constituencies with no home whatsoever in Accra (the national capital). After winning an election an MP - elect would have to move to Accra in order to represent his constituents as an MP. It is therefore important that the nation provides readily renovated accomodation for MP elects in the Capital. Acquiring good accomodation in Accra is not easy and newly elected MPs may not have the funds to do so.

The role for any serious opposition party is to form a shadow government with alternative policies to those of the ruling party. The opposition party should fund and staff the office of the opposition leader to play his/her role as the president in waiting. Creating an office and staffing it will be an additional burden to the already over burdened tax payer. If parties cannot mobilize their members to play meaningful roles in governance either as parties in government or as opposition parties then they are not fit to exist in the first place. A responsible opposition party will always find a role to play inn governance. A cynical opposition party that seeks to destroy everything of the party in government can never fit into the governance of the country until they gain power. As it stands the NDC and the NPP can never agree on anything. The NDC, PNC and CPP sometimes agree on some issues and can work together to govern the country.

The opposition parties in Ghana tend to destroy than to help fashion and shape the governance of the country. Let's get real. Since independence opposition parties have never cooperated with the governing parties to move the country forward. Until the opposition parties change that mentality no sane political party will commit such as suicide by creating roles for the opposition leaders. Let them learn the value of being opposition leaders. Period!

So please stop this hasty reference to older democracies and focus on how we can nurture our infant democracy to grow our own way. Political parties in America and Britain are currently cooperating on defence and national security issues because of the threats by terror organizations. Even then they hold close-door discussions where their differences are not made public. In Ghana opposition can not even discuss defence budget in camera but make a lot of noise concerning the number of aircraft the Air Force has, the number of ships the Navy has, the number of guns the men and officers of the infantry has. Do you want to discuss military intelligence with such an opposition party?

How many in NDC including Mahama himself has the brains to think through issues and come out with anything that makes to help alleviate the problems facing the nation?

We are now seeing the differences between NPP and NDC in the sense that while the former has men with brains, the later is a mere shadow of itself. Nana should not accept anything from a group of truants, vagabonds, thieves, scavengers. If NDC cannot carry the load, they should put it down for a strong person to lift it up.

1. The first is the idea of a consensus National Development agenda; and

2. The idea of some Consultative meetings between the Opposition leader and the President on pertinent National issues, especially on our Security, deployment of National assets as in harnessing our Oil Resources or the sale of our Rig, etc.

But creating another luxurious outfit to pacify the major Opposition leader to court his or her active participation in governing is nothing but a charade to pacify him or her for the defeat in elections. An opposition that has never accepted election results cannot be part of any sincere ruling gov't plans. An opposition that insults the presidency all the time they happen not to be in power cannot be trusted. Still an opposition that prides itself in saying I will make this country ungovernable can never be trusted.

It seems to me that you do not understand the nature of politics in Ghana or anywhere. I do not believe that the opposition is ready to understand the role you are trying to invent. I must say, frankly that your prosal will not work, rather, the opposition will work against the government in power. Of course, the government can appoint an opposition member to serve on any government agencies, which is done in most political administrations. I have no resean to believe that it will be a bad idea. The reason for the tension in the country right now is because the opposition want too much power, but they will not get it, or have it. It is likely that in the future, they may not win any presidential elections either.

How can the opposition play a role in the governance of the country when they're so ideologically opposed to the government and its policies and projects? How can the largest opposition party play a role when their track record has, since the Nkrumah era, been to oppose anything and everything that the government does? What about their philosophy of property-owning democracy, which is actually a scheme designed to loot state funds and property? Have Ghanaians not been sufficiently exposed to that since the opposition lost power?

Truth is, there's a clear distinction between the government and the opposition parties, just as it is between day and night, between light and darkness, between east and west, between a Jew and a Gentile, between a Christian and a Muslim, between white and black, and so on. There's no denying this fact. One can't put a square peg in a round hole and suppose that somehow it's going to fit the hole some day

Prof Agyemang Badu Akosa's call itself, like others' before him who've also made such a call, is hypocritical. How come he and the others never made that call when their party was in power? Why is it that its's only now that they've suddenly seen the light? Why is it that everything the government does is bad? Isn't it because they're not in control? Just listen to their reactions to President Mahama's State of the State address in Parliament three days ago. It's all bad; there's nothing good in it, because in their scheme of things, he and his administration are leading the country astray. Yes, Ghana belongs to the opposition party indeed and they and they alone have a divine right to rule it!

No way; NDC will never accept the fact that they've credibility and trust. They've tried to rephrase, re-coin Nana Addo's ideas, all to no avail. They've totally failed the nation and that's a fact. A whole bunch of shameless people in govt. It's ridiculous!

I don't think NDC will agree or support Prof. Agyeman Akosa's proposal, to have Nana become part of Ghana's development or economic solution team, let alone see him become president of Ghana. Meanwhile the nation is suffering under the incompetent and clueless Mahama-led NDC govt. It's a sad situation for beautiful Ghana and her hard-working citizens

Why this prescription: Simply no: the reason being that the two do not have the same political beliefs and policies so the opposition ruler would simply sabotage the president's effort. Eg, Akkufo believes in wholescale free SHS immediately; JDM believes in a progressive implementation of the SHS subject to availability of funds and and structures. Yes they both believe the free SHS as mandated by the constitution but the approaches are different, so how do they cohabit?
