The title is misleading, he stresses that all will have free education, of course if you choose to go to a public school, but then those who prefer to go to boarding schools pay for their lodge and board. Nothing wrong with that – I think it is a brilliant idea regardless of who is touting it.
America is what it is today because it provides free and MANDATORY (until a set age depending on state- could be anywhere from age 16 – 18, where one could drop out) education to all kids (including illegal immigrants) for primary and secondary levels in the public education system. Depending on which state and your income level you could also get money/subsidies to a magnet school. They realized that the only way for democracy and capitalism to thrive is to have an educated electorate and population.
What Mahama (easier for a Northerner to make the change) should do is also level the playing field so that folks from the North and South have the same education benefits – in other words cut out the free boarding and education in the North. The North has not made a lot of gains from its free education policy, because education was not made mandatory. If possible use income to determine who gets assistance but not make it blanket policy for Northerners only. We all know that there are some wealthy Northerners, including Mahama’s own dad who did not need the assistance, while there are very poor Southerners who drop out of the system due to lack of funds. Education is one thing that I believe should be forced on children for the benefit of a nation.
The idea of providing free education is long overdue and whoever is trying to right the wrong should be encouraged and supported. Who cares if it is Nana Addo or Mahama pushing it – in the end it is Ghana that benefits. One thing though is it should be properly studied by education experts, so that the right teacher training, curriculum, relevant exams etc. can be implement, this is not something we rush into like we did with the current system. In the West the majority of students attend public schools and it has worked well for them because of the teacher qualifications,supervision, money etc. they throw at education. There is something like FREE and QUALITY education. Just look at other countries in the West and also a place like China.

If the implementation is done properly then going to your local school would not be any different from going to a school in Cape Coast if you live in Accra.

I would advise you to read the President's State of the nation address carefully.

He said that the constitution mandated that fee-free SHS should be introduced gradually. Gov't had therefore decided to introduce it from 2015-16 onwards beginning with the abolition of fees for day students. This does not mean that the policy is for day students alone - other categories of students, boarders, would benefit with time as the policy was rolled out.

Not quite two years ago President Mahama and his campaign team ridiculed Nana Akufo Addo for stating in his manifesto that if elected president he will introduce a fee free education to middle and high school in the country. there was hue and cry among the leadership of the NDC in the country that there can never be such a thing in any foreseeable future., because the country is so broke to the extent that it cannot afford such a gargantuan feat. If that being the case where is the president going to get the funds for what he told the students at Winneba yesterday? To tell the truth, Ghanaians voted for NDC and this man by mistake for he has no foresight for the country.
