There is a crisis staring NPP in the face. I do not comment on the Akufo Addo- Alan Kyerematen tensions but given my view that Nana is preparing to contest the flagbearership once more I think I can add to the issues at stake.

In my view, Akufo Addo should do the decent thing and throw in the towel. Three arguments are being bandied about regarding why he will win and I believe these arguments fly in the face of reality. First there is the view that the NDC has performed abysmally. Second, Nana is immensely popular. Third his age is not an issue and the fact that it took Mills 3 instances to be elected means the same should and can apply to Nana Addo

Granted the NDC has been below expectation but this does not mean it is staring defeat in the face. Ronald Reagan and Maggie Thatcher took the US and UK into recessions in early 1980s yet both were returned to office. Reagan actually won 49 states! The reason was that Walter Mondale and Michael Foot of the Democrats and Labour were worse choices than the incumbents and so voters stuck with Maggie and Reagan.

In 1992 the UK economy was back in recession yet John Major beat unelectable Neil Kinnock. However Bill Clinton beat George Bush senior as Clinton appealed to the voters.

Second, I doubt the hype about Nana's national popularity. The fact that you visit a constituency or district and people flock to see you and cheer does not translate into electoral votes. In 1969 K.A. Gbedemah went through the streets of Kumasi on a horse and the crowds went wild with joy yet KA Busia still trounced him in the 1969 election. JEA Mills was very popular yet he kept losing to Kufuor and this was because of the baggage Mills carried in the form of Jerry Rawlings

What bothers me most is the third point and its consequences for the NPP. When Mills contested the Presidency for the first time he was 56. When he was elected he was 64. If Akuffo Addo wins this flagbearership he will be 2 months short of his 73rd birthday. This, if you ask me will be the NDCs campaign message and will be a turn off for a swathe of floating voters in the younger age bracket.

Second, when MIlls went up against JAK he Mills, was at the head of a divided party. The Reform Party was made up of those early cadres of the P/NDC who felt Mills was an imposition and never wanted him as leader. The party foot soldiers, those who organized and campaigned on the ground joined the Reform Party. Thus this made it easy for JAK to win. This is because the Reform Party's impact was not in the 1% of the votes it got but it was in the impact on grassroots mobilization and apathy. However, Mahama does not have this issue. His party is united around him and thus an advantage JAK had is not there for Nana.

There is a final point and I feel that this is even more troubling for the long-term future of the NPP. It is plain that some executives want to see Akufo Addo lead the party going into the 2016 elections. There have been public declarations of support and subtleties like organizing to meet him on his return from the UK, attacking anyone who thinks a change is needed and mentioning him at any opportunity in the news. It is as if the other potential candidates do not exist. The feeling I have is that by doing this, the next NPP flag bearer has the opportunity to contest only the 2020 elections. By that time a generation of voters and potential supporters will have been wiped out - sacrificed on the Akufo Addo altar. There will have been no work experience on NPPs part as NDC will have been in office for so long. The memory of the NPPs 2001-2008 will be a distant memory as new voters, today aged 15, will only know the NDC.

A lengthy period out of power can give those who feel cheated a long time to brood and seethe over injustices. This will be compounded by the argument that a rule is developing in the NPP - that once elected flag bearer the position is yours until you have had enough and not because you cannot be elected. With this barrier being raised, I can see many others seeking their political fortunes elsewhere including forming political parties claiming descent from Danquah and Busia. This will be the sad end of a once great tradition

To prevent this problem, the delegates need to vote for a new candidate come December 2014. Perhaps Nana can save face by not contesting at all but I feel too many people are urging him on and their pressure might be irresistible. it is thus for the delegates to look closely at the situation and end the aspirations of Nana Addo and begin to put the NPP on the road to capturing state power come 2016

If this thesis of yours is meant to campaign for Alan ...... then be aware that with or without rigging Nana comes out almost always 50/50 with the opponents.

Your belief that Akufo Addo's age will be a turn-off to younger voters is hypothetical and therefore non-scientific to be taken as a fact. So, your argument on age is completely baseless.

Three, there's no evidence in any political history that so called "younger person" elected to be President deliver better service to their nations than "older" ones. If anything, the incompetency being exhibitted by younger people in the NDC adminstration is rather a "turn-off" to potential voters than their older compatriots.

Second, the wiping out of a generation of voters stares you in the face. Kwame Nkrumah for all his achievements spent 17 years hogging the limelight in the CPP. As long as things were ok no one saw the flaws in this but after 1966 that party has been in terminal decline. He never allowed any young men any space to flourish and look at the result. How sad.

Same thing took place under Maggie Thatcher in England. She was elected leader in 1975 and became PM in 1979. One of her strategies was to make sure no rivals emerged as an alternative to her. So in the Tory Party rising stars like John Moore, Tony Newton etc were demoted anytime the Press mentioned them as potential successors. When Maggie was chased out and John Major (not really her ideal choice) also lost office, that was it for 18 years as so many young voters were turned off by the Conservatives

If you want the NPP to win, do not make one candidate into a Messiah. Focus your arguments on the reality on the ground. Ask why Nana has presided over shrinking votes, regions and parliamentary seats and then after that sober reflection, start to look for a new leader

The political history of the UK is quiet shy from Ghana's, because of diverging cultures of the two societies.

In Ghana, ask somebody why s/he voted for a particular candidate, and you get a surprising answer like, "because he's handsome". So, unlike the UK, in our society, even presidential election could be seen as a "beauty contest". This is a society that doesn't base their votes on issues, and instead of changing that ignorance in our society, NDC is rather exploiting it, using its "propaganda machine" as you put it. Does NPP have to play into that? I don't think so.

NPP has to focus on educating or engaging potential voters on the TRUTH and ISSUES at stake, in a medium that will get to the voters rather than just changing leadership or putting up a counter "propaganda" to match NDC's. NPP has to be careful not to be lured into conducting itself as NDC would.

Let's take notice that, if Nana Akufo Addo will lead the party again, it will NOT necessarily come from himself, but the CONGRESS voting him to do so. In other words, Nana declaring his INTENT to lead remains an intent UNTIL the congress actually vote to give him that mandate. This means contesting the leadership with other competitors younger than himself. How will this scare the younger NPP aspirants away?

Please let's not argue as if Nana Akufo Addo is trying to IMPOSE himself on the NPP leadership or anybody can do same. Assuming the congress vote overwhelmingly for Nana to take up the mantle of leadership, neither yourself, myself or our constitution can deny him from accepting that responsibility. And if he accepts the leadership, how will that discourage younger aspirants from contesting for future leadership in the party?

If the NDC play the age factor as you said, in my opinion, it will NOT work, because NDC which claims the "youth advantage" has so far NOT lived up to that "advantage". So on what record will the "youthful" NDC present to use against the Akufo Addo "old" argument? Think about that.

So personal appearance and personality and other non-economic traits come into play and this is where Akufo Addo scores very low points in the minds of voters. Thus if Akufo Addo wants the NPP to come to power then he can suggest that this man who does not have that non-economic baggage be elected leader:

He speaks Twi fluently. In addition, he is fluent in Ga, Fante and some French. He is married to Patricia Christabel Kyerematen (née Nyinah)

They have two children namely Alexander and Victor. Alan John Kyerematen attended Adisadel College in Cape Coast for his secondary education. He entered Adisadel College at the record age of nine years, and thereafter attended Achimota School for his sixth form education. He proceeded to the University of Ghana, Legon for a Bachelor's degree in Economics. Kyerematen also holds a Law degree, LLB from the Ghana Law School at the same university where he qualified as a Barrister-at-Law. He was called to the bar in Ghana, and is a practicing attorney–at-law in Ghana.
In addition, he is a Hubert Humphrey Fellow of the School of Management at the University of Minnesota, U.S.A, having completed one year management studies under the Fulbright Fellowship program at that institution.

Alan Kyerematen has had an extensive and successful professional career in both the private and public sector spanning a period of over twenty-four years.

He was a senior corporate executive with a subsidiary of Unilever International in Ghana. He also worked for a number of years as a Principal Consultant and Head of Public Systems Management with one of the leading management development institutions in Ghana, the Management Development and Productivity Institute (MDPI).

In 1998, Alan Kyerematen was appointed by the UNDP as the first Regional Director of ENTERPRISE AFRICA, which was an Africa-wide, flagship initiative for the development and promotion of small and medium enterprises. Under that framework, he established enterprise support institutions and programmes in 13 Sub-Saharan Africa countries - Botswana, Benin, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Uganda. Over 4,000 African entrepreneurs and small businesses have benefited from these programmes.

In 1990, Alan Kyerematen was responsible for establishing and managing the EMPRETEC Programme in Ghana, a leading business development programme sponsored by the United Nations and Barclays Bank Limited. He led the transformation of EMPRETEC from a UN project into an independent Foundation, and as its founding Chief Executive, developed the Foundation into a world-class institution which is recognized as a successful model and best practice institution for enterprise development in Africa.

Between 1984 and 1990, he participated in and managed a number of major private and public sector consulting assignments in Ghana, as a Principal Consultant and Head of Public Systems Management with the Management Development and Productivity Institute (MDPI), a leading management development institution in Ghana.

Prior to this, he was a senior corporate executive with UAC Ghana Ltd, a subsidiary of Unilever International, where he worked in various managerial positions with distinction until 1984.

Throughout his career, Alan Kyerematen has demonstrated a capacity for efficient and effective leadership in managing and coordinating organizational activities at high levels of executive responsibility. Within that context, he has managed a diverse team of professional staff and technical experts, and provided intellectual leadership in supervising the planning and organization of major international events, including the preparation of technical reports and other documentation.

In addition, he has acquired over the years, an in-depth knowledge and understanding, as well as practical experience in dealing with critical development issues and challenges in Africa, particularly in LDCs, in the areas of trade, investment and economic policy management.

He has also at different stages of his professional career, successfully mobilized and managed significant resources from development partners to support development efforts in Africa.
Mr. Kyerematen is a member of the Council of Governors of the British Executive Service Overseas (BESO) in the UK and also a Board member of other organizations in Ghana.

In 1994, Mr. Kyerematen was listed by the TIME Magazine as one of the Hundred (100) Global Leaders for the new millennium, alongside Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation), John F. Kennedy Jr., and others.

Mr Kyerematen currently serves as a trade advisor at the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He heads the African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC); a centre created by the ECA with the main objective of strengthening the human and institutional capacities of African governments to formulate and implement sound trade policies and participates more effectively in trade negotiations at the bilateral, regional and multilateral levels.He is leading efforts in enhancing advocacy for trade in Africa, building the capacity of trade negotiators, as well as developing capability at the country level in trade policy formulation.

In addition, he is coordinating the implementation of technical assistance programmes to enhance the productive capacity and competitiveness of African countries, and also providing support for analytical as well as evidence-based research on trade related issues.

Mr Kyerematen is one of the leading members of the technical team providing strategic guidance and support to the African Union Commission in developing and elaborating an Action Plan for Boosting intra-African Trade and preparing a framework for the establishment of a Continental Free Trade Area. As part of this effort, he was designated as a Special Envoy of the African Union to hold consultations with selected African Heads of State prior to the 18th African Union Summit of Heads of State and Government in January 2012.
Ghana, on 17 December 2012, nominated
him for the post of WTO Director-General to succeed the current Director-General, Mr Pascal Lamy, whose term of office expires on 31 August 2013. His candidature has received the backing of the Africa Union (AU)but he did not make the final shortlist

Mr. Alan Kyerematen has been a leading young stalwart and key strategist of the NPP since its inception in 1992. He is a Founding Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and has also served on the highest decision-making bodies of the NPP that shaped the Party’s strategic direction both in opposition and in Government, including:

NPP Economic Management Team NPP Finance Committee. He is also a Founding Member of the Young Executive Forum (YEF), a powerful advocacy and lobby group within the Party which played a major role in galvanizing the professional and business community to support the growth and development of the party, as well as mobilize a new generation of party faithful and young leaders. As Chairman of YEF from 1992 to 2001, he symbolized the essence and spirit of the new generation of party leaders.

Hon. Kyerematen has been one of the privileged few to have held membership of the National Executive Committee for over a decade, under successive Chairmanship of Mr. B.J. DaRocha, The Right Hon. Peter Ala Adjetey, H.E. Odoi Sykes and Mr. Harouna Esseku. As a result of his contribution to strategy development within the Party, he was appointed as a Member of the NPP/CPP Great Alliance Negotiating Team.

Mr. Kyerematen made an attempt at the leadership of the New Patriotic Party in 2007, capturing 32.3% of votes cast. He was first runner-up to Nana Ado Dankwa Akufo Ado who gained 47.96% of votes cast. He made a second attempt in 2010 where he placed second to Nana Akuffo Addo.

Mr. Kyerematen was appointed Ghana’s Ambassador to the U.S when the N.P.P came into office in 2001. As Head of Ghana’s Diplomatic Mission to the United States of America, he was considered the NPP Government’s top foreign envoy and performed with distinction over the 18-month duty tour, and his significant achievements include: Establishment of the US-Ghana Economic Council, a high-level advocacy and advisory group established to deepen economic relations and bilateral trade between Ghana and the United States; Coordinating Government’s re-negotiation of the Westel agreement with Western Wireless and Valco Agreement with Kaiser Aluminium Company Coordinating the implementation of the first Investment Forum in the United States to showcase the economic potential of each of the 10 regions of Ghana Establishment of the first web-based Ghana Skills Bank, a database designed to facilitate access to Ghanaian professionals and experts worldwide. Initiated plans for the establishment of a Ghana Cultural Centre in the United of States. Developed an “Operation Save Your Schools Programme” for Ghana residents in the United States to assist their alma mater primary/middle schools.
Cabinet Minister

In 2003, Alan Kyerematen was appointed as the Cabinet Minister with responsibility for Trade, Industry and the President’s Special Initiatives (PSI). In that capacity, he spearheaded the development and implementation of innovative programmes which have become new strategic pillars of growth for the transformation of the Ghanaian economy. Concrete manifestations of these special initiatives are:
An $8.5 million state-of-the-art factory, which produces high grade industrial starch from cassava for export to key markets in Europe, Africa and Asia. The starch initiative created over 10,000 jobs and piloted a new innovative approach in rural industry development based on the concept of Corporate Village Enterprises.

In addition, it is considered as a model in linking developing countries into the global supply chain through industrial agro-processing. The first industrial starch company has been certified as a global supplier of high grade starch to Nestle operations worldwide.

The construction of a multi-million dollar enclave within the Tema Free Zone, dedicated to garments manufacturing for the export market by Ghanaian entrepreneurs. The enclave is also being extended and converted to accommodate similar facilities for Furniture Manufacturing and an ICT Park, thus converting part of the Free Zones into a Multi-purpose Industrial Park.

The revival of the Oil Palm industry in Ghana, achieving a phenomenal growth in seedlings"supply from 250,00° seedlings per annum in 2001 to 4 million as at the end of 2004, from twålve nursery sites. Progsamme initiated under which over 102,000 hectares Oil palm plantation is being cultivated.

Mobilizing new investments to expand Salt mining operations in Ghana and provide a stable raw material base for the0development of a caustic soda industry to feed other manufacturing industries. Ghana’s non-traditional export sector has grown from $400 million in 2000 to the level of $800 million in 2005.

The roll-out and implementation of the Districts Industrialisation Programme, a comprehensive programme for rural industrialization involving the setting up of at least one medium-sized factory in each administrative district in Ghana. As Minister for Trade, Industry, he has coordinated Government of Ghana’s trade policy agenda in respect of multilateral trade negotiations, including WTO, EU-ACP Economic Partnership Agreement and ECOWAS. He played lead roles in both the regional preparatory process towards the WTO Cancun and Hong Kong Ministerial Meetings, particularly during the latter, in which he was one of the privileged few amongst Trade Ministers in the World, to have been appointed as a member of the Chairman’s Consultative Group. He was also the only Trade Minister from Africa to have been selected as a panelist on Trade during the 2006 World Economic Forum in Davos.

As Minister of Trade and Industry in Ghana, Alan Kyerematen played a key role in shaping Africa’s Trade Policy agenda in the WTO Multilateral Negotiations and the EU-ACP Economic Partnership Agreement Negotiations. He was one of the lead negotiators for Africa in the WTO Ministerial Conference in Cancun in 2003, and also participated in the high-level “Green Room” consultations during the Hong Kong WTO Conference in December 2005.

In addition, he initiated, directed and managed the preparations for the hosting of UNCTAD XII in Ghana, and introduced for the first time in the history of UNCTAD Conferences, the World Investment Forum which has now become a major calendar event for UNCTAD.

He also coordinated and supervised the hosting by Ghana of the Sixth United States-Africa Summit in 2006, and played a key role in negotiating changes in the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). He was Chairman of the ECOWAS Council of Trade Ministers at the critical stages of launching the EU-ECOWAS EPA negotiations.

He has also led the negotiation and development of bilateral trade and economic relations between the Government of Ghana and its major trading partners, including the UK, US, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, China, Denmark, South Africa, Nigeria, etc.

He has been a leading member of the NPP Government team promoting Ghana abroad and attracting and facilitating foreign direct investment into the country, and has also been responsible for developing a comprehensive internal trade and import management portfolio aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of local products, promoting fair trade and protecting consumer interests as well as promoting Made-in-Ghana products through campaigns such as the highly successful “National Friday Wear” programme.

Under his direction, a comprehensive Ghana Trade Policy has for the first time in the history of Ghana been launched as a major plank in Government’s strategy for accelerating and sustaining economic growth and increasing incomes and employment. The Trade Policy provides clear and transparent guidelines for the comprehensive implementation of Government’s domestic and international trade agenda.

In addition, he has led the process of preparing a $200-million implementation blueprint, called the Trade Sector Support Programme (TSSP), which was launched in October 2005.
The major component activities being implemented include the establishment of Export Trade Houses, the establishment of a “Furniture City” at Tema - an enclave for manufacturers of wood export products, the establishment of product galleries to promote Made-in-Ghana goods and the establishment of a Technology Innovation Center for Capital Goods Manufacturing. He has also negotiated a $45 million facility with the World Bank to promote SME development in Ghana.

Another major achievement of Kyerematen has been to develop the Trade Ministry into a professional service organization with the Ministry being restructured into strategic business units with an efficient programme coordination and management system.

Sendero, Alan's qualifications indeed look good on paper. But I am not impressed. Almost all of Ghana's civilian presidents and prime ministers have had Ph.D. and other high credentials. But where is Ghana now? Yet the only non-Ph.D. president arguably seems to have outperformed all of them by the end of his term. Besides Ghana and Nigeria can boast of lots of citizens with Ph.D. and work experience with international organizations, but all that has not helped to lift us out of the economic quagmire. Akufo-Addo may not be a Ph.D. and may not have long credential of work with international and transnational organizations, but he just may be the leader we need.

I like the last sentence in your fifth paragraph when you stated that "JEA Mills was very popular yet he kept losing to Kufuor and this was because of the baggage Mills carried in the form of Jerry Rawlings." This is simply nothing but the truth, pure and simple especially as far as floating voters are concerned.

Akuffo-Addo currently falls into that situation of someone carrying a negative baggage. His negative baggage stems from his irresponsible utterances sanctioning tribal violence in the ALL-DIE-BE-DIE statement as long as violence by Akans can assure him of victory. His wee smoking or narcotic drug taking history and other dangerous dispositions for which he is well known. Political failure is sure to follow such a candidate since he is not attractive to Ghana's KINGMAKERS (i.e. the floating voters, period!!!)

The so called "All-die-be-die" has NOTHING to do with tribe, but everything to do with responding to political violence coming from NDC: The NDC's so called footsoldiers' violence against NPP supporters at Atiwa, Chereponi and Aboblorshie necessitated that response by Nana akufo Addo, and RIGHTLY so. You may twist the context anyhow you wish, but the truth can NEVER be altered.

There's no known evidence that Nana used drugs and what kind of drugs. But even IF he did, history will NOT "record" him as being the first to have done so: Presidents Obama and Clinton all admitted using marijuana but it's not something that affected their leadership. Even Nana has NEVER admitted of using any kind of drugs before, mind you, so any allegation to that remains unproven allegation!!

People MUST be serious and present arguments based on ISSUES not NONSENSE if we as a nation can proceed past underdevelopment and corruption we currently face in our political dispensation. This personal hatred of otherwise VERY ASTUTE politician like Nana Addo will not help Ghana.

Any discerning or objective individual will tell you that Mahama is struggling to be a President at a time when Ghana needs an experience leader who has the foresight required to deliver.

Yet this is someone who has had half the votes in both elections he contested. To those complaining do you support the party or personalities? He speaks Twi fluently. In addition, he is fluent in Ga, Fante and some French. He is married to Patricia Christabel Kyerematen (née Nyinah)

They have two children namely Alexander and Victor. Alan John Kyerematen attended Adisadel College in Cape Coast for his secondary education. He entered Adisadel College at the record age of nine years, and thereafter attended Achimota School for his sixth form education. He proceeded to the University of Ghana, Legon for a Bachelor's degree in Economics. Kyerematen also holds a Law degree, LLB from the Ghana Law School at the same university where he qualified as a Barrister-at-Law. He was called to the bar in Ghana, and is a practicing attorney–at-law in Ghana.
In addition, he is a Hubert Humphrey Fellow of the School of Management at the University of Minnesota, U.S.A, having completed one year management studies under the Fulbright Fellowship program at that institution.

Alan Kyerematen has had an extensive and successful professional career in both the private and public sector spanning a period of over twenty-four years.

He was a senior corporate executive with a subsidiary of Unilever International in Ghana. He also worked for a number of years as a Principal Consultant and Head of Public Systems Management with one of the leading management development institutions in Ghana, the Management Development and Productivity Institute (MDPI).

In 1998, Alan Kyerematen was appointed by the UNDP as the first Regional Director of ENTERPRISE AFRICA, which was an Africa-wide, flagship initiative for the development and promotion of small and medium enterprises. Under that framework, he established enterprise support institutions and programmes in 13 Sub-Saharan Africa countries - Botswana, Benin, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Uganda. Over 4,000 African entrepreneurs and small businesses have benefited from these programmes.

In 1990, Alan Kyerematen was responsible for establishing and managing the EMPRETEC Programme in Ghana, a leading business development programme sponsored by the United Nations and Barclays Bank Limited. He led the transformation of EMPRETEC from a UN project into an independent Foundation, and as its founding Chief Executive, developed the Foundation into a world-class institution which is recognized as a successful model and best practice institution for enterprise development in Africa.

Between 1984 and 1990, he participated in and managed a number of major private and public sector consulting assignments in Ghana, as a Principal Consultant and Head of Public Systems Management with the Management Development and Productivity Institute (MDPI), a leading management development institution in Ghana.

Prior to this, he was a senior corporate executive with UAC Ghana Ltd, a subsidiary of Unilever International, where he worked in various managerial positions with distinction until 1984.

Throughout his career, Alan Kyerematen has demonstrated a capacity for efficient and effective leadership in managing and coordinating organizational activities at high levels of executive responsibility. Within that context, he has managed a diverse team of professional staff and technical experts, and provided intellectual leadership in supervising the planning and organization of major international events, including the preparation of technical reports and other documentation.

In addition, he has acquired over the years, an in-depth knowledge and understanding, as well as practical experience in dealing with critical development issues and challenges in Africa, particularly in LDCs, in the areas of trade, investment and economic policy management.

He has also at different stages of his professional career, successfully mobilized and managed significant resources from development partners to support development efforts in Africa.
Mr. Kyerematen is a member of the Council of Governors of the British Executive Service Overseas (BESO) in the UK and also a Board member of other organizations in Ghana.

In 1994, Mr. Kyerematen was listed by the TIME Magazine as one of the Hundred (100) Global Leaders for the new millennium, alongside Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation), John F. Kennedy Jr., and others.

Mr Kyerematen currently serves as a trade advisor at the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He heads the African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC); a centre created by the ECA with the main objective of strengthening the human and institutional capacities of African governments to formulate and implement sound trade policies and participates more effectively in trade negotiations at the bilateral, regional and multilateral levels.He is leading efforts in enhancing advocacy for trade in Africa, building the capacity of trade negotiators, as well as developing capability at the country level in trade policy formulation.

In addition, he is coordinating the implementation of technical assistance programmes to enhance the productive capacity and competitiveness of African countries, and also providing support for analytical as well as evidence-based research on trade related issues.

Mr Kyerematen is one of the leading members of the technical team providing strategic guidance and support to the African Union Commission in developing and elaborating an Action Plan for Boosting intra-African Trade and preparing a framework for the establishment of a Continental Free Trade Area. As part of this effort, he was designated as a Special Envoy of the African Union to hold consultations with selected African Heads of State prior to the 18th African Union Summit of Heads of State and Government in January 2012.
Ghana, on 17 December 2012, nominated
him for the post of WTO Director-General to succeed the current Director-General, Mr Pascal Lamy, whose term of office expires on 31 August 2013. His candidature has received the backing of the Africa Union (AU)but he did not make the final shortlist

Mr. Alan Kyerematen has been a leading young stalwart and key strategist of the NPP since its inception in 1992. He is a Founding Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and has also served on the highest decision-making bodies of the NPP that shaped the Party’s strategic direction both in opposition and in Government, including:

NPP Economic Management Team NPP Finance Committee. He is also a Founding Member of the Young Executive Forum (YEF), a powerful advocacy and lobby group within the Party which played a major role in galvanizing the professional and business community to support the growth and development of the party, as well as mobilize a new generation of party faithful and young leaders. As Chairman of YEF from 1992 to 2001, he symbolized the essence and spirit of the new generation of party leaders.

Hon. Kyerematen has been one of the privileged few to have held membership of the National Executive Committee for over a decade, under successive Chairmanship of Mr. B.J. DaRocha, The Right Hon. Peter Ala Adjetey, H.E. Odoi Sykes and Mr. Harouna Esseku. As a result of his contribution to strategy development within the Party, he was appointed as a Member of the NPP/CPP Great Alliance Negotiating Team.

Mr. Kyerematen made an attempt at the leadership of the New Patriotic Party in 2007, capturing 32.3% of votes cast. He was first runner-up to Nana Ado Dankwa Akufo Ado who gained 47.96% of votes cast. He made a second attempt in 2010 where he placed second to Nana Akuffo Addo.

Mr. Kyerematen was appointed Ghana’s Ambassador to the U.S when the N.P.P came into office in 2001. As Head of Ghana’s Diplomatic Mission to the United States of America, he was considered the NPP Government’s top foreign envoy and performed with distinction over the 18-month duty tour, and his significant achievements include: Establishment of the US-Ghana Economic Council, a high-level advocacy and advisory group established to deepen economic relations and bilateral trade between Ghana and the United States; Coordinating Government’s re-negotiation of the Westel agreement with Western Wireless and Valco Agreement with Kaiser Aluminium Company Coordinating the implementation of the first Investment Forum in the United States to showcase the economic potential of each of the 10 regions of Ghana Establishment of the first web-based Ghana Skills Bank, a database designed to facilitate access to Ghanaian professionals and experts worldwide. Initiated plans for the establishment of a Ghana Cultural Centre in the United of States. Developed an “Operation Save Your Schools Programme” for Ghana residents in the United States to assist their alma mater primary/middle schools.
Cabinet Minister

In 2003, Alan Kyerematen was appointed as the Cabinet Minister with responsibility for Trade, Industry and the President’s Special Initiatives (PSI). In that capacity, he spearheaded the development and implementation of innovative programmes which have become new strategic pillars of growth for the transformation of the Ghanaian economy. Concrete manifestations of these special initiatives are:
An $8.5 million state-of-the-art factory, which produces high grade industrial starch from cassava for export to key markets in Europe, Africa and Asia. The starch initiative created over 10,000 jobs and piloted a new innovative approach in rural industry development based on the concept of Corporate Village Enterprises.

In addition, it is considered as a model in linking developing countries into the global supply chain through industrial agro-processing. The first industrial starch company has been certified as a global supplier of high grade starch to Nestle operations worldwide.

The construction of a multi-million dollar enclave within the Tema Free Zone, dedicated to garments manufacturing for the export market by Ghanaian entrepreneurs. The enclave is also being extended and converted to accommodate similar facilities for Furniture Manufacturing and an ICT Park, thus converting part of the Free Zones into a Multi-purpose Industrial Park.

The revival of the Oil Palm industry in Ghana, achieving a phenomenal growth in seedlings"supply from 250,00° seedlings per annum in 2001 to 4 million as at the end of 2004, from twålve nursery sites. Progsamme initiated under which over 102,000 hectares Oil palm plantation is being cultivated.

Mobilizing new investments to expand Salt mining operations in Ghana and provide a stable raw material base for the0development of a caustic soda industry to feed other manufacturing industries. Ghana’s non-traditional export sector has grown from $400 million in 2000 to the level of $800 million in 2005.

The roll-out and implementation of the Districts Industrialisation Programme, a comprehensive programme for rural industrialization involving the setting up of at least one medium-sized factory in each administrative district in Ghana. As Minister for Trade, Industry, he has coordinated Government of Ghana’s trade policy agenda in respect of multilateral trade negotiations, including WTO, EU-ACP Economic Partnership Agreement and ECOWAS. He played lead roles in both the regional preparatory process towards the WTO Cancun and Hong Kong Ministerial Meetings, particularly during the latter, in which he was one of the privileged few amongst Trade Ministers in the World, to have been appointed as a member of the Chairman’s Consultative Group. He was also the only Trade Minister from Africa to have been selected as a panelist on Trade during the 2006 World Economic Forum in Davos.

As Minister of Trade and Industry in Ghana, Alan Kyerematen played a key role in shaping Africa’s Trade Policy agenda in the WTO Multilateral Negotiations and the EU-ACP Economic Partnership Agreement Negotiations. He was one of the lead negotiators for Africa in the WTO Ministerial Conference in Cancun in 2003, and also participated in the high-level “Green Room” consultations during the Hong Kong WTO Conference in December 2005.

In addition, he initiated, directed and managed the preparations for the hosting of UNCTAD XII in Ghana, and introduced for the first time in the history of UNCTAD Conferences, the World Investment Forum which has now become a major calendar event for UNCTAD.

He also coordinated and supervised the hosting by Ghana of the Sixth United States-Africa Summit in 2006, and played a key role in negotiating changes in the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). He was Chairman of the ECOWAS Council of Trade Ministers at the critical stages of launching the EU-ECOWAS EPA negotiations.

He has also led the negotiation and development of bilateral trade and economic relations between the Government of Ghana and its major trading partners, including the UK, US, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, China, Denmark, South Africa, Nigeria, etc.

He has been a leading member of the NPP Government team promoting Ghana abroad and attracting and facilitating foreign direct investment into the country, and has also been responsible for developing a comprehensive internal trade and import management portfolio aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of local products, promoting fair trade and protecting consumer interests as well as promoting Made-in-Ghana products through campaigns such as the highly successful “National Friday Wear” programme.

Under his direction, a comprehensive Ghana Trade Policy has for the first time in the history of Ghana been launched as a major plank in Government’s strategy for accelerating and sustaining economic growth and increasing incomes and employment. The Trade Policy provides clear and transparent guidelines for the comprehensive implementation of Government’s domestic and international trade agenda.

In addition, he has led the process of preparing a $200-million implementation blueprint, called the Trade Sector Support Programme (TSSP), which was launched in October 2005.
The major component activities being implemented include the establishment of Export Trade Houses, the establishment of a “Furniture City” at Tema - an enclave for manufacturers of wood export products, the establishment of product galleries to promote Made-in-Ghana goods and the establishment of a Technology Innovation Center for Capital Goods Manufacturing. He has also negotiated a $45 million facility with the World Bank to promote SME development in Ghana.

Another major achievement of Kyerematen has been to develop the Trade Ministry into a professional service organization with the Ministry being restructured into strategic business units with an efficient programme coordination and management system.

Where as Mahama who profess to be the president has lost touch with his own fooled soldiers, here is Nana addo too cherished by the people who do not even agree with him. Such is the unifier the people love to see win a clean election. I have the strongest conviction that, this is the man Ghanaians are waiting for.
On a more serious note, Mahama feels uncomfortable and so may wish to resign to save his soul. The evil that men do lives even before they die. Think about this!

The caption "Minority meets Akuffo-Addo" is misleading. It gives the impression that all other parties forming the minority group in parliament went to meet Akuffo-Addo. Our journalists need to sharpen their skills.
