How can he stop police bribery if he believes that it's rather the public harassing police officers with bribes. Even if that is the case, is the onus not on him to educate his men and women to reject the bribes when offered and arrest the culprits for prosecution (attempting to bribe public officer/s)? This is unbelievable but that is Ghana so what do you expect?

It is surprising some of the things you hear from those in position of authority. If we don't have it in our law that when a police officer has someone under arrest, you don't approach him and beg for the person under arrest, then they better do that. It is shameful that giving and taking of bribes has lingered on for such a long time. It is not enough to say this to the public, start charging people for doing that, and find a way of monitoring activities of your men; which may include giving special telephone numbers to the public to report any misconduct.

I was stopped driving from Cape Coast and was stopped by the police. They asked for my driving documents and I provided whatever they requested. They continued harassing me so I got frustrated and told the officer that if he is looking for money I am afraid to disappoint him and that he would not get a penny from me. They gut then put my license in his pocket and started requesting I showed him my triangle, first aid kid and fire alarm which were all produced. Not finding any fault he ridiculously asked for the expiry date on my fire-extinguisher. To my astonishment a lady stopped to try and help calm me down and said she was a former government appointee. She however in being nice to both myself and the police suggested I give something to the policemen and settle things amicably. I totally refused, telling them I do not pay bribes. Surprisingly I was being blamed for refusing to pay. This disease in Ghana is endemic, deep seated, embarrassing and will not go away with such statements from the IGP. It has to be tackled from all aspects of Ghanaian society with purging starting with Ministers of State, Mp's and all politicians.

If a police officer is offered a bribery, it is his/her job to refuse to accept it, to keep the proposed money as evidence to be presented in court for the civilian for obstruction of justice.

BUT it is the police officer's fault if s/he accepts the bribe in the first place! Everytime!

Don't try to whitewash the Ghanaian police for their misconduct, dont try to make up bad excuses for the Ghanaian police!

This is the exact words the officer used, gentleman, the ball is in ur court. I did not pay a dime to him. So Mr.IGP is your men who ask for bribe and not the other way round.

If a car cross red light the police should be stopping the car for crossing redlight. All the traffic light has a timer that prevents accidents betwwen car at traffic lights.
Ghana Police should introduce on the spot fine, where a police can take fines on the spot and stop wasting people time when they stop them.
Stupid police will go on the roads stopping trotro drivers. How stupid can the police be, all these trotro has stations where they stop. Why cant the police prevent the public by going to the stations before people are stopped in the middle of their journey.
The police is nothing but a uniform. How many Lawyers has the police, how many carpenters does the police, how many scientist does our police have. Police officers are those in community who work hard to keep the piece and dont get paid.
A community should have it selected police officers. You cant work undercover in a place you dont know. All the CID working in towns and villages they were not born or didnt go to school there creates the crimes. They encourage crime to make it as if they are working hard on crime.
They are young ghanaians who wants to join the police service but not given the chance.
One police officers is supposed to take care of 800 people. 1:800. How can they ever do a good job.

We keep spending to widen roads only to allow the extra lanes constructed to be blocked by illegal parking. what sense is this when we say we are broke and no money yet we spend on widening roads and do not enforce the laws.

He told me that he had never heard anyone in his life asking a policeman to take him to court. All he wanted was money. After a while when the police officer realised that I was not going to give him money and many cars had passed by,he decided to let me go because he was missing out on would be payers.

The onus of staying clean lies in the Policeh, not the Public. Most folks would even vouch that it is the Police who demands the bribes in most cases. Hey, fluid flows down the slope. If the lower end gets lifted to level the plane, all stays put.

People understand the coded signals that are the invitation from the Officers to the culprits to offer something in cash for free pass. When there is any reluctance on the culprit's part to comply the Police resort to all forms of coercion, including escalation of the purported crime to scare the culprit into submission of offering the bribe.

The Officers play on the relative ignorance of, and exaggerated inconvenience to the culprit to coerce the culprits into paying the Bribes.
If the Police would take the initiative to warn the culprit that the case against him or her could get worse if he or she attempted to bribe the Officer, the Public would retract from that habit.

It's because everyone knows such an attempt is likely to result in additional charges. In Ghana the police officers directly or indirectly demand bribe from the offender to save him from prosecution. If the police organization starts to prosecute bribe givers the practice will decrease to its barest minimum. Mr IGP, charity they say begins at home. Let it begin with your police family, let the change you desire start with your organization and the rest of us will follow. The police can then inform the general public of the consequences of attempting to bribe a police officer. And no one should be immune from police prosecution especially when traffic violations are committed, whether a minister of state, rich or poor. We must all be equal under the law. This is the way to go from the present chaos.

A police man can stop a vehicle carrying 20 passengers on board with only one person's driving licence they would like to see, the car could wait at their illegal barriers for close to 10 minutes just for the simple reason that the driver refused to do the usual padding of the licence cover with 1 ghana cedis.
The police profession is really a shameful profession as the they cannot help when you are under attack from armed robbers, they are only good atounting road blocks.

So I asked - what about if you get unlucky one day when a fine police officer refuses the 'amamre' option and insists to drag you to court? He said let's see. Its been 6 years he gets caught from time to time but that 'incorruptible' officer is yet to surface.

If the IGP will state the fact without any fear of equivocation,it is a well known fact that the Police demand bribes from the public and not the public harassing or forcing them to take bribes.For some serving police officers to rob others and at times use arms to pursue this course,show the extent at which the bad nuts in the service are prepared to go.Recent arrest of robbery involving two officers are a case in point. Admittedly,there are many officers who are honest, full of integrity and are gallant in their duty to fight crime and maintain law and order in the society.However,the bad acts of the few have given the profession a bad name.Using reactive public relation strategy to build its image is an attempt in futility.It is a bad practice for Police Public Relations Capo to deny a bad press without making a meticulous effort to get to the heart of the issue.A case in point was when some prostitutes alleged that some officers threatened them with arrest but only stopped when they had sex with them or collected their earnings for the night.The PR unit denied the story without making any effort to establish the falsity or otherwise.I think in such cases of bad press,the PR unit should assure the public that it will delve into the issue and put their findings into the public domain.It is better to call a spade by its right name than referring to it as a digging instrument.
