Truth is a "hard commodity" to come by in GHANA. The University requested for funds to maintain its roads and the government responded NO FUNDS. The University raised a loan to maintain the roads and install toll booths to raise funds to off-set the loan. After all these hue and cry, the government decided to pay the maintenance cost and as at now no funds is released. The issue is not whether what the government or the University authorities is doing or did is wrong. The matter is the way and manner the booth was destroyed, whether it is legal? We should call a spade a spade. We are not under a military rule.

I live in New York City where there are a few Ivy League Universities. At least I know Columbia University and New York University are in the city center. They are able to conduct classes despite all the noise from thousands of cars including horns from frustrated drivers. The city owns the streets passing through these universities and numerous colleges. I cannot imagine for a split second any of these schools putting up tolls under any circumstance on city streets. If you want a serene campus environment, build a wall around your university and restrict access or move it further away from the city center. So far as the road passing through belongs to the city or government, anything you do, either collecting toll or stickers is lawless and illegal.

Any university is a place of teaching, research and generally, a place where things are done logically and scientifically. In the case of Legon, it is not so most of the time. They do things without recourse to logic and are not bordered about the impact of their actions. That is not a good thing for any university.
What thought process went into deciding to erect the toll booth at that particular place? Did they find out the number of vehicles that branch into Legon from Accra end when the traffic light turns green? The number of vehicles will go a long way into deciding the location so that toll booth so that when the light changes for vehicles from another direction to move they will not be impeded.
Take for example the closure of the all roads except the Okponglo road leading into Legon; have they thought out the impact on little children as young as three (3) years who will have to walk more than a kilometre to school from the Achimota end?
This then brings to mind; what are they teaching our children? Your knowledge will guide your actions. Frankly, they have disappointed me.
What Col Gbevlo did was good and just in time. People who commute in Accra have enough problems with traffic at other places without Legon adding to their woes.
I have in the past commended Legon authorities as one government organisation who have effectively policed their lands unlike others including the military who have sat idle allowing people to encroach on their lands - NOT LEGON; you cannot take one (1) inch of Legon land. That is highly commendable and so I wish to request them to apply the same thought process and logic which made them not to allow people encroach on their lands to other aspects of their conduct.

If this Aryeetey is not sack from that place, the University will become a platform for NPP political propaganda. Is the university an authority of itself? Is Aryeetey the first person ever to head that institutions? The fact is that, this man wants to turn the university into money making for himself. Who was supposed to audit money collected from the gate and others? Has he, the respect to inform the authorities of the Toll gate before constructing it? Is is sad that people who are supposed to know better, would rather be making fools of themselves with this issue. The Ashanti/Akyem tribal party is so frustrated and power hungry that, they have become very blind like the bat, and would support every stupid thing in desperations. Aryeetey is a big disgrace. Legon is not for him, to just get up and do silly things. Enough of this stupidity. Ghanaians fully support Col. Gbevlo and will continue to support him for as far as security issues are concerned. There is a corrupt cabal of university administrators who are carrying out an NPP political agenda. They named a hall after Busia, a building after Kufuor, and are said to have even restructured one course to reflect the Danquah-Busia ideological take. Kufuor started this nonsense of politicizing the appointment of administrators. Formerly it was academics who were appointed to the post of Chancellor and Vice Chancellor - and rightfully so. Kufuor in his NPP-style corrupt manner appointed useless tribal and/or party cronies like the Asantehene, Sam Jonah and Kofi Annan as Chancellors. Now this corrupt university administration cabal feels
it can do whatever it wants: taking loans without authorization by the government (its employer), erecting toll-booths to enforce illegal, indirect taxation.
NDC is a failed government that is weighed down by its own corruption so much so that they cannot crack the whip and enforce government authority.

If really the VC said this, it shows why our boys and girls dont have jobs. Why cant a VC of a university not think before openning his mouth. What is this VC telling the students.
ALL the roads in Ghana belongs to the States. Why should a group of people try to charge people for using the roads.
The roads in Legon are no different from the roads in any town. Legon administration has no right to build anything on public roads. Should any group of people do that they would have been in prison by now. The roads around Legon is not for the university alone, these roads were build for public use and nothing else. Legon VC is a bit stupid for such unthought comments. People of Osu, Adenta and all the community plus Legon want people to pay and use the roads. Its only a fool who thinks people dont pay to used the roads.
Legon university administration should all be tranfered to save our few public universities. This VC is not the man to take care of our children at this time. Legon belongs to the State not the administrators, its only the State (govt) who can decides whether something is good or bad.
The State dont need to ask anybody before they correct things. The govt dont want things they havent decided, what they didnt decide is always call a risk.
No government will sit down and let Legon university bring down their govtment.
If the govt didnt act by now all the universities and all schools will be charging people for using the roads that pass by them.
Ask the VC has many cars and lorries go on the streets in Legon. Cars and lorries drives on roads not the streets. People only go on Legon streets when the are lost or live there.
How stupid an idea to charge for something you have already paid for. We pay for road tax for using the roads already.
Lets have security post in every road to collect money.

Thats is the best of examples John Mahama is trying to tell officers paid by state, who have been in positions for long time, been long at a government job dont make it your own.
Administration of UG have some corruption they want to hide.
In the budget of UG all streets maintenance paid. University of ghana dont have roads and shouldnt be for security as well.
Any group who think they are more powerful than a govt should think again. Who are workers of legon to think the own the university. If they respect the govt they wouldnt be building a security post. Legon adm is not incharge of security for the campus.
Let respect every government and dont unmind their office. Legon is for only for students but everybody. There is no difference between Flagstar house and UG as far as the public is consent.

If the university understand what it means by “right” they should know by now that they violated the public right without due consultation to erect toll boots. Accra is already suffering from vehicular and human traffic and it is one of the fundamental problems confronting all cities in the world and all governments’ try to ease the congestion by implementing appropriate programs to allow easy movement of people and vehicle.
The Lazy professor might have made this decision from his /her calculation of how much is earn on ACCRA/TEMA motorway and other motorways tolls. It is a lazy research and lack balance with interest groups. The main motive is to make money than their primary objective of providing services. This is the BREACH of what they stand for and I CAN authoritatively say that it serves some myopic interest of someone within the university board whose solely interest is the monies that will flow into some bank account for embezzlement. That’s where their interest is and they will quote every law to protect that interest.
It is so because one cannot imagine the number of cars the ply Accra /Tema motor road each day and vehicles pay between 50pewas to 5 cedis to and from, yet the very road they collect the toll for is very deplorable and does not befit international standards of motorway. Why is everybody silent about that? Who owns the company that runs the collection of tolls on this motorway?
It is time to put a stop to these nonsensical thinking iced with “PROFESSOR DOCTOR” but rather factual, act and sound with integrity. University professors must be seen disseminating information and direction from their acquired knowledge to bring freedom of life and justice to the populace. I wonder why they are degrading themselves to “force buy and sell” that infringes the right of the society in which they operate. Have they forgotten the corporate social responsibility which every dynamic institution is pursuing internationally?
How can a university that boast of intellectual excellence in training, informing and disseminating to society about its research work rather assume some monopolistic activity to abuse its stakeholders. Who ever brought the idea of charging tolls at the campus is a lazy thinker. He should think deeper or consult others on how to raise revenue without infringing on the right of the people.

These boneheads at the UG vice chancellor offices should ask themselves why it was alright for them to break the law by creating their own rules without prior consultation with Ghana's AG or department of Education but deem the actions of Gbevlo Lartey to be lawless. UG has a law school with lecturers who assuredly claim to understand the laws of the country and or legal processes to get laws enacted and yet chose to bring hardship on citizens in the communities around the UG without due process. If the expectation from these chancellors is that Mr. Lartey should have known better I suppose the officials at UG should also know better.

The University of Ghana's action in erecting a toll booth was lawless, arrogant and provocative. It was the desperate action of corrupt administrators (paid with taxpayer's money) who illegally took a loan for which they could not account for as a result of corrupt misappropriation, and sought to shift the debt unto students and others.
Government should bring these state employees (VC's et al) to book for corruption and illegalities. Heads must roll so that the nation can be spared the arrogance of a bunch of corrupt law-breakers.

I am very very happy that our University Chancellors have summoned the courage to confront the National Security Coordinator, the ILLITERATE BULLY and IDIOT, FOR TRESPASSING ON THE UNIVERSITY PROPERTY TO DO WHAT HE DID. This will never happen at Oxford, Cambridge or any of the Universities in Europe. It shows Ghana has a long way to go to be trully DEMOCRATIC. Legon is wise to get the other Vice-Chancellors involved as it cannot take on the Government alone. Together they will have the CLOUT to do so.
THE VICE-CHANCLLORS SHOULD SEEK JUDICIARY PROCESS TO GET THE NATIONAL SECURITY CO-ORDINATOR TO PUT THE POST BACK !!
What Legon has done is to teach the Nation how NOT TO RELY ON THE GOVERNMENT TO SOLVE OUR PROBLEMS FOR US. THERE IS A HUGE MORAL IN THIS ACTION. THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT GHANAINS MUST PAY FOR SERVICES. FOR ALL THE MOTORWAYS, ACCRA TO KUMASI TO TAMLE, TO WA AND FROM AFLAO TO AXIM. ALSO FOR EFFICIENT SUPPLY BY PRIVATE PROVIDERS OF ELECTRICITY, WATER, ETC ETC.
TO DEPEND ON CORRUPT GOVERNMENT AND CIVIL SERVANTS IS THE WAY TO DESTRUCTION OF GHANA.
WELL DONE LEGON !!!!!!!!!
