If it was that great for Ghana then why did it fail? We have been there, done that, we are going forward and not backwards just like Nkrumah's said. JJ was in power for 20 years and what did he achieve? Even China is moving to democracy -- they are experimenting in small towns. As the population in China become more sophisticated and richer, they are going to demand democracy. What has Mugabe done for his country? The Arab spring is about demanding more freedom and democracy. See the turmoil in the Arab countries and see if KB is making sense. The issue is not the number of years in power but more so picking the right leaders.

Now, KB is clamoring for 'constitutional dictatorship'. Mahatma Ghandi once said "the only acceptable form of dictatorship, is the silent voice within". Ghana is not lagging behind because of democracy, it's due to the poor governance, vision-less leadership, nepotism and myriad of self inflicted causes that has nothing to do with longevity of stay in office. if only these empty promises during campaigns could translate to action we will be paradise by now. our politicians are selfish, corrupt, deceitful and ignorant. we are saddled with useless bunch of politicians and MPs who can hardly pass for legislators. What makes a nation grow is the leaders and the people, unfortunately we lack these kind of leaders and no matter what form of governance you prescribe is will be kicking the can down the street.

No matter what they do victory shall be ours for God has most certainly made them blind so they lack any wisdom and see no solutions . These pagan ungodly souls have lied and stolen from us on a daily basis but their days are surely numbered . Somebody quickly remind them i am still waiting in vain to be arrested or see the effects of their juju which they promised because we told our people to prepare for revolution and war . Today its clear the pepeni have armed themselves so we also begin to arm ourselves against these criminals, if you can not buy a licensed gun then make sure you sharpen your cutlasses well and keep them well polished and oiled . pepeni has appointed his incompetent criminal friends , family and tribesmen into various positions of state , little do they know that its not about building empty meaningless careers but they should know its a duty to serve the interests of the people and seek the well-being prosperity of all citizens regardless of stature , religious affiliation , ethnic background , age or gender . They plan and scheme to steal our oil and any wealth we are able to create. they work to systematically destroy even the basic family unit by try to thrush down our throats perverse gay homosexual values as being the ideal .They do not see the beauty of the unity in diversity of the various tribes of Akan rather they encourage and facilitate conflict amongst ourselves but it will not work as our people are now more sophisticated than that as no one is blind to their divide and rule tactics except the few idiots who think they build a political career in the oligarchy which has now crossed over into all parties . Be strong and vigilant oh children of Akan as our day draws nigh . long live the republic of Akan

Of course the one party system failed in Ghana, why do you think that the 1966 coup was so successful? It was because the people were becoming unhappy with the dictatorship and the failing economic system. You see my own father was in the Nkrumah government and I come from a strong CPP background so I remember how lonely it felt when Nkrumah was overthrown, I also remember how some of members in my extended family would talk/move cautiously around us when we went to visit during Nkrumah’s era. And even Nkrumah regretted that dictatorial aspect of his leadership when in Guinea; he conceded in private conversations that he should have taken a different approach.
Yes, give China about 20 or so years and you will see democracy in play, they have allowed some towns and urban areas since 1999 to have some direct elections; this entails nominations, campaigns and voting by secret ballots. As the society becomes more affluent they are going to demand a say; and the economic boom is creating many millionaires, not to forget the influence of Western education on the children of the rich including kids of folks up in the CCP hierarchy. The china of 30 years ago is totally different from what we have today – it is getting more open and of course the Internet is having a lot of influence on the thinking of the youth. Just as we have seen economic transformation so would the political transformation happen in China. Just keep an eye on China and you will see what I am talking about.
We need to focus our attention on building strong institutions and that would solve a lot of our problems.

Please, lets try to understand the Geopolitics of the world. Let's try to understand how and why modern African states were formed and to assess if that purpose is still served for the benefits of those who created it. You may not like Nkrumah; that is perfectly normal but try to understand why he took certain decision even if you think he was a madman because everyone including people with mental health do things with reasons. Human actions are never spontaneous.

This is 21st Century and there is no need for Constitutional Dictatorship. Other countries have developed with the same system of four year term and a maximum of two terms. The argument that four or five years terms are insufficient to develop the country by governments is just an excuse. In Ghana even if one term is eight or ten years politicians will still complain that it's not enough and demand more. What Ghana needs is long term development vision that all political parties buy into, so whether it's NDC or NPP government the development agenda (vision) is the same but the means to achieving the vision are different. That means when a new government takes over they modify the delivery/implementation to suit their political objectives or ideology. This man is a danger to democracy.

We live in a Country where it is a political tradition for incoming president from a different political party, not to continue to complete projects started by his predecessor
to the extent that,on-going projects irrespective of the amount of money already expended on it,and the judgment debts involved.
So,first of all, those who aspires to become leaders in particular and Ghanaians in general needs a revolution in the mind to avert the trend or that practice in the Country.
Devoid of this basic requirements,it's difficult if not impossible to move the Country forward Therefore,no amount( volume ) of development agenda, visions ,plans,or whatever will see any tremendous progress.
Therefore,my understanding of Constitutional Dictatorship; I will call it " Democratic Dictatorship" when we assess our leadership for the past 4 decades (40 years).you come to understand the conclusions of Mr K B Asante as follows:
,1.Chairman Rawlings ,2.Former President Kuffour, 3.Late former President Atta Mills ,
4.Currently President Mahama.
For the purpose of this article, all the 4 of them have "Kleptomanialized" in one way or the other.Even if you have not.personally
taken it,"Woyomizing" is another way.
So,with regard to Taxpayers Fund, they're on the same level. With no exception !
Now Rawlings was a waste in both Dictatorship and Democratic rule. Kuffour laid prudent economic measures economic - empowerment and ushered the Country to a lower middle income status.Late Atta Mills
was worse than Rawlings.Atta Mills could not located the drawing board. He did not complete his term, though.Mahama is also not able to find the drawing board.Though he just start to look for it.
Therefore ,if the better of the 4 was a Constitutional Dictator(Democratic Dictator) imagine the development and progress by now.
That is all what K B Asante wanted to say !
Thank you Mr KB Asante.

Ghana's failure is that, the Country has been very unfortunate to have a lasting or persistent visionary leadership. And, such persistency can't be achieved with a Western-styled Democracy.
Western type of Democracy is premature and too rigid for a developing nation like Ghana which needs policy adjustments through reality and sound judgement.

IT HAS TAKEN MORE THAN 40 ARDUOUS YEARS FOR 'AN OPINION LEADER' TO STICK HIS NECK OUT TO ACKNOWLEDGE OPENLY THAT GHANAIANS WERE WRONG TO GET RID OF FORMER PRESIDENT NKRUMAH AND I AM HAPPY THAT IT IS MR. K.B. ASANTE. ON THAT SCORE, MAY I BE ALLOWED TO STATE THAT I WAS DISGUSTED WHEN I READ THAT NO LESS A PERSON THAN THE SON OF ARCHIE CASELY-HAYFORD,A CABINET MINISTER IN NKRUMAH'S GOVERNMENT WHO MADE THE UNFORTUNATE STATEMENT. I BELIEVE SYDNEY WAS PLAYING TO THE GALLERY.
YES, K.B. IS RIGHT BECAUSE HE HAS LIVED THROUGH ALL THE REGIMES AND WORKED WITH MR. RAWLINGS AND HE KNOWS THE SHORT-COMINGS OF OUR PAST LEADERS. THEY PROBABLY MEANT GOOD EXCEPT THAT THE TASK OF GOVERNMENT WAS FAR BEYOUND THEM.
NKRUMAH, ON THE OTHER HAND, CAME WITH A WELL THOUGHT-OUT PLAN LIKE LEE KWAN U HAD BUT THE U.G.C.C. LEADERS HAD THEIR IDEAS OF LORDING IT TO THE SEMI-LITERATE CITIZENS. IF THEY COULD NOT RUN THE COUNTRY THEIR WAY THEN NKRUMAH HAD TO BE SOLD OUT TO THE WESTERN POWERS.
AS MY LECTURER ONCE SAID, IF HE WAS NOT BRITISH HE WOULD HAVE WORSHIPPED NKRUMAH BECAUSE HE KNEW NKRUMAH WAS CAPABLE OF PROVING THAT GIVEN A FAIR CHANCE, THE BLACKMAN COULD BE SUCCESSFUL. HE SAID IF NKRUMAH HAD BEEN ALLOWED 10 MORE YEARS, HE COULD HAVE EITHER SUCCEEDED OR FAILED FOR ALL TO SEE.
YES, WHEN WE FIND THE RIGHT MAN, WE SHOULD GIVE HIM THE TIME IT TAKES TO ACHIEVE RESULTS. THANKS

Sarpong(aka Catalyst, Cardinal, Houdini,Sam,Teacher,Ghanavi),stop showing your ignorance here.Tunku Abdul Rahman, the Founder and prime minister of Malaysia, passed PREVENTIVE DETENTION LAWS after independence - in order to cut the legs and heads off the Malaysian terrorists(like the NLN/UP),who lost elections and resorted to violence. The British had to send in thousands of troops at one point to defend the government. In all, over 3,000 people died during the bombings, assassinations and consequent civil war. It was after the defeat of the terrorists, that Rahman was able to put Malaysia on the road to success, through infrastructure building, education, healtcare and attracting foreign investments.
Singapore also had its share of terrorism by the opposition(like NLM/UP). Lee Kuan Yew was forced to pass PREVENTIVE DETENTION LAWS to emasculate them and move on with development.Nehru (India) too had to pass detention laws and abolish the Maharaja class,in order to move the country forward.
In fact all three leaders above were members of the Non-Aligned Movement in the '60s - together with Nkrumah ,Nasser, Tito and Sukarno.
It was AFTER terrorism had been defeated in Malaysia and Singapore, that the governments there were able to implement NATION BUILDING policies,(the same policies that Nkrumah was implementing in Ghana before he was overthrown by Sarpong's tribal fathers, and friends.Note: Sarpong as a boy served at Manhyia, the same place where the terrorist NLM was born). He would DO WELL SHIPPING used cars to Ghana ,instead of continuously exposing his ignorance on Ghanaweb.

SARPONG, how does a country "leap forward" without the good economic policies that K.B Asante talked about?
You were too quick to judge wrongly. It is no secret that Malaysia and Singapore at the crucial stage of their economic development lacked democracy but had leaders who "leaped forward" their economies through good economic policies.

Queen Elizabeth of England,Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Folkland and Gibraltar has been the head of state of Great Britain since 1952. This is the reason why the saying that it is only Britain which can have dictatorship, but other countries can not have it falls flat on the face.
Constitutional dictatorship means there is a universal adult suffrage and the people decide that they have a life president.
It is the right of citizens of a country to chose the type of government they desire, and that is done through universal adult suffrage.

Completely out of touch Mr. Asante must rethink again. What has Africa gained from dictatorship regimes. Look at Cameroon, Zimbabwe, Uganda, and all the rest. Instead of addressing the root causes of the problem, he is looking at the symptoms. Weak institutions, inadequate human capacity, very bad and corrupt leadership with no vision at all is our bane and not at all the governance system. This factors even present under the best of dictatorships are bound to plunge a country into an abyss.
I strongly disagree with you Mr. Asante. Even with the kind of so called "flexible" democracy we claim to be practicing, look at how reckless and unaccountable our politicians are becoming to the extent that a sitting president can confidently say he will continue to borrow even if it is leading us nowhere.

Take a cue from UAE, Mubarack era for Egypt,Indonesia, Malaysia , Singapore. It took America hundreds of years to get to the current state of democracy and development. With UAE, a couple of decades to become economic force to recon with. Wealth should be created before it can be shared. When Ghana develops then we can think of democracy. Ghana is practicing mockery democracy and waste of money and resources . Traditionally Africa is ruled by kings and chiefs which makes western type of democracy very difficult to practice. If we have one strong leader and put in place structures to get regions select their leaders, districts select theirs and form a different type of system of governance we can advance faster than the European style democracy. Europe is different and it is about time we look into our strengths and stop patronizing stuff that will not help us.

I thought this man was smart but had no idea he could make such a crass statement.
Why not compare and discuss a system such as federalism and the Ghana chieftancy system so that you can come up with a new improved model? Or even look at what Denmark and Norway have because they are very successful?
I dare you to take one look at any african government that has stayed the course over long periods and achieved anything useful. No military government nor anyone else. And how dare you place Nkrumah into that category? What that man did is par excellence with infrastructures and factories to propel the nation into a powerhouse. No other has had the balls nor mental ability even with all their academia, self importance or wisdom to manage or intensify a nation to do likewise. And Please don't even mention JJ.
Unless I've misread this, do you mean to tell us that people like Bongo, Nguema, Dos Santos, Mugabe, Museveni, Mswati, Compaore, Al-Beshir and Itno propelled their countries into wonderful developed/developing states ?
what we have now is good. Come and try. If you succeed, you get another chance. If not, you can go home. If you really mess up in your first 2 years, then step aside.

I quite agree with K B Asante. Here in the western world, it happens all the time, and nobody says anything. In Canada here one of the most progressive and rich provinces has had a one party rule forever. That province drives the employment of the whole country. The only thing with Ghana is there are these so-called democrats who will always be listening to the Western World, and be causing a lot of trouble. Constitutional Dictatorship should not mean one man forever whether he/she is good or bad, but changes within the Party will have to keep the ball rolling as the years grind on. Even good opposition members could be invited to hold positions within the government. This democracy that we are adjusting to is very foreign to Africa, and it is about time that we do something about it. After all our local Chiefs, Illiterate/Educated, have held our country together all these years. We can survive an African type rule if we put our mind to it. Long live Africa.

The native americans say"when you talk too much your tongue makes you dumb". K. B.is struggling to legitimize Nkrumah's dictatorship. Perhaps Malaysia, Singapore, India andthe few others are the exception more than the rule. We had Rawlings for about 20 years with absolute power most of the time. We all saw what happened. There's nothing as a perfect democracy. Democracy evolves and it's nurtured like you'd a child. We need to learn from our mistakes. God made us imperfect but He expects us to grow up towards perfection. It's only fools who refuse to learn from their mistakes. I hope KB is not inferring that we are all fools. We must give democracy a chance to survive and flourish for it's our best hope .

The root causes of the problem(s) in Ghana are 1)LACK OF LEADERSHIP.The presidents we have been voting into the castle of flagstaff house are more of managers and ceremonial presidents. They come into office just to enjoy the title and act as managers i.e maintain the status quo instead of vision to come up new new ideas in a framework of continuous improvement. To suggest dictatorship is stupid. 2)SELFISHNESS--These presidents get into office relatively poor but at the end of their tenure, they get filthy rich at the expense of the lowly waged workers. They think they were voted into the office to enrich themselves forgetting that they had been chosen to have the plight of the common worker at heart. These presidents are smart i.e they know their responsibilities and the difference between right or wrong but choose to consider themselves and their households first.Look at how a stupid clause was inserted into the constitution to protect the Ghanaian president and his cabinet from paying taxes. The successive presidents knew that it was wrong but they chose to do nothing about it but to enjoy the advantage but recently.IS THIS FAIR?
3)MARGINAL GROWTH IN THE PRODUCTION AREA.Attempts must be made to shrink the wage bill and create more jobs.If the GDP is 15 billion and the wage bill is 11 billion, tells me there is waste in the system which must be eradicated. Ghana is a beautiful country full of resources. We shouldn't be suffering.

Imagine a clueless, visionless, incompetent, thieving NDC looting brigade led by John Mahama operating under a constitutional dictatorship for life?
In just 6 years of the NDC gov't, Ghana has been buried on the back of thievery, looting, and sheer unbridled incompetence.
It has taken the magnanimity of Ghanaians and their patience and forbearance and the fact that, the constitution provides for a change of gov't in 2016, either than that, this NDC gov't would have kissed the Presidency goodbye a long time ago.
Under no circumstances whatsoever, should those dynamics be changed, not even thought off, if the relative quietness and seeming stability of the country is to prevail.
It was not and is not for anything that, the constitution provides for a 4 year mandate to perform to deliver, emphasis on perform (1), and (2), to deliver.
There will be no constitutional dictatorship in Ghana. The day it rears it's head, it would be overthrown, period.

Why we revisit these debates at all suggests to me that this country is not going anywhere in a very long time. This Asante coot should stop his nonsensical diatribes and should go the way Kpegah has gone:keep quiet. Why can't we have a progressive strong leadership with a crack thinking team that comes in every four years to whip our problems into shape? Why can't we get away from the same old lame ineffective leadership instead of retrogressing to dictatorship. We should be more aspirationally directed rather than falling behind and trudging old tropes out through these idiotic commentators.

Rubbish talk!!! If this theory holds true, then Zimbabawe will be the richest country in Africa, and indeed the World. On the contrary, Mugabe has made that country one of the poorest nation on earth.
