dont believe this statistics, there has to be more deaths than recorded. to see pregnant women toiling for their daily bread, under some of the harshest conditions makes me wonder, if God really exists in Ghana!!!

Getting pregnant and going into labor is a risk! Getting pregnant in Ghana could be a death sentence! Why is nobody talking about FAMILY PLANNING? Free maternal care did not help....as the evidence shows.

These statistics could be believable if they were wholly scientific.Does the writer know that some of the reported cases of new born deaths also include,largely, stolen babies?

This very topic was one of NDC campaign messages in the build up to the 2008 elections. The propagandist committee led by Fiifi Kwetey used this campaign against the NPP for neglecting pregnant women and their newborns when in fact the President had sought the UK help for a free maternal care. Not so many years down the line when NDC is in power, Ghanaian women feared to get pregant because there is no safety net anywhere. I am very sad as a citizen of such a country that is ruled by sycophants, criminals, corrupt persons who can only insult and had nothing better for the beloved country. To me I thought maternal mortality was going to be a thing of the past but has however increased. I cry for my country.

This would inform policy and allow appropriate action to be taken to reduce maternal and newborn mortality.

The massive corruption in the country is affecting every facet of our daily lives.A useless technocrat by name Dr. Ebenezer Appia-Denkyira was ushered through the back door to be the Director General of Ghana Health Service.How can somebody who achieved not a single practical solution to simple problems as a technocrat in the health ministry be successful at Ghana Health Service requiring scientific innovation in problem solving.He was a noticeable failure as regional director of health services in the eastern and upper west region.He is a direct beneficiary of the dirty politics and corruption in the health sector.The name Dr. Appiah-Denkyira is associated with a vindictive troublesome dwarf adept at corruption and thievery.He could only have become a DG in a Mahama Government.The current trail of corruption,confusion and ad hoc administrative procedures was predictable.The result is the litany of negatives such as the high maternal and child deaths.This guy took a weird decision of falsely accusing colleague doctors of a mental illness subsequently sacking them within a month of assuming duties as DG to back superiors maltreating the said doctors in western region.Some of us were not surprised at this singular act of madness by a DG because of some nasty experience working with him in the eastern region.Expect a lot more nagging problems by the time this divisive ,Narcissistic character of a criminal leaves office.

If we are in a country with Ministers,MPs and some heads of institutions stealing the state money, how do you want us to be provided better facilities and equipment. It would worse in the coming years because greater percentage of trainees midwives and nurses would leave Ghana for greener pastures because they are not longer bonded due to the stoppage of allowances.

Bare in mind the position of DG is lobbied for with strong partisan links.The government nominates a preferred candidate to be confirmed by a board largely influenced by government.For your information those deeply involved in politics are people like Appiah-Denkyira.In fact so-called top civil servants like him are involved in dirty form of politics euphemistically termed 'politricks'. They behave like clever amphibians with one limb in water and the other on dry land.These are gamblers who invest wisely in major parties across the political divide to be rewarded with positions like the DG when the said party is in power.For your information covert politics is far more dangerous and sophisticated in civil service than overt conventional politics.Nobody is against his position as a DG.After all in Ghana any character can occupy any key position irrespective of competence.But what you do with that position is what counts.Politicians cannot be isolated and blamed for crust corruption and inefficiency in public institutions like the GHS.Check from records the amount of money that goes to health in government subvention etc excluding donor money from both local and international partners.Is it the fault of the politician that donor money for anti-retrovirals, anti-psychotics etc are diverted?I worked in a hospital where even donated food items meant for HIV/AIDS and TB patients were systematically diverted.Is that the fault of the politician?Are you aware doctors especially female doctors pay bribes at GHS headquarters to refuse transfer particularly to districts?Is that the fault of the politician?Are you aware doctors officially posted to some districts for years never appeared there?Couldn't that have helped significantly reduced maternal and infant mortality? I personally have no problem with him but only shocked a DG could connive and forged mental illness to victimized colleague doctors.The primary duty of a DG is to serve the interest of all doctors irrespective of tribe ,religion or political persuasion.For your information he sacked the doctors without granting them any audience or listening ear with all efforts to meet him frustrated.Let's stop this hypocrisy and double standards.

The increase in the maternal deaths are currently being talked about every where but has any one try to find out whether monies given to vigorously improve maternal and newborn care go to the correct places or district levels. No one can improve the current situation unless the authorities in Accra and the Region release monies to the district and sub districts level where the action is. Donors do their best but the leaders at the national and regional levels tout the efforts of the donors by (choping) the money in Accra. For the Municipal and District Assemblies the least talk about them in this regard the better.
We all will surfer if we refuse to do the right things now. I am very sure sure that more than 70% of us come from villages yet we get to big offices and forget that our sister, brothers and grand fathers are still there and do things as if we have lost our sense of minds.
GHS is becoming one of the most corrupt areas in recent years. Cross check this if you care.

Some pregnant women prefer home to hospital delivery sometimes due to the attitude of some of our health workers.It can be heartbreaking how some fellow nurses & midwives behave towards the laboring women and their relatives, this makes it hard for them to come to us until too late. We should also conduct staff assessment regularly as being done in other parts of the world, to improve on quality service to those who come trusting us with their lives and that of their love ones.
