Contract this with the German system. The sort of things Ghanaian parents consider normal would be imprisonable offences in Germany. Yet whose Economy is better. Master John Opoku, are you confused? You are saying that the Ghanaian Culture is 'heavy handed' but you should have known how strict the German system is! The so-called 'Presbyterian Discipline' that we know of in Ghana is from them. You compare the German system with either the British or any other mainland European system and you would have to change your theory. It is the 'permissiveness' that is making the kids 'grow horns' and cannot distinguish between what is right and what is wrong. If this woman had been abusive as you suggest, the system would have taken care of her long ago! You talk of the economy but it is the strict discipline that has made the economy grow strong. It is not because the Germans are permissive. The 'creative spark' does not come form permissiveness but discipline and the Germans are good at that! Please enjoy your cleaning job with discipline and stop insulting your own ancestry. The elders say that: Okwasea na ode nensa benkum kyere Ne Papa ekuraase. Since this might be 'primitive' to you, let me translate it: 'It is only a fool who shows the direction to his father's village with the left hand"!

This killed my creative spirit and a dream to pursue something l loved so much!. The main difference between most European parents and us is that they wait and observe what their children are getting at with what they are doing, we on the other hand would stop the kids going any further from the onset.

Who knows what happened in this family. It could have been a mental illness the boy suffered from or drug addiction but I know for a fact from growing up in Ghana and witnessing it first hand. Ghana is a thoroughly abusive country. You can see from 95% of responses how brainwashed we are. Seriously I could write a book on abuse of power ( especially on kids) in Ghana. Note : there is a difference between intelligent discipline and abusive behavior that kills the speak of creativity, critical analysis, problem solving, personal initiative and confidence. Those with these attributes drive the German economy while in Ghana we have a world of abusers and sycophants.

Note: fact I criticise Ghanaians does not mean I am not a proud black Ghana man. Quite the opposite actually. ;)

I do not know whether you have observed Ghanaian parenting in the diaspora. Contrarily to the abusive picture you are painting , most Ghanaian Parents in western world are often soft on their kids compare to the same parent raising their kids at home. You are extrapolating what you observed in Ghana and assuming the same parenting style in Europe and North America. Most Ghanaian parents in USA and Europe are to busy kayayo-ing to be be abusive to their kids. Beside, because the fear of Children calling Koti and child welfare on them, most Ghanaian do not discipline (intelligently or otherwise). Frankly, I think you have no clue as the way Ghanaians in diaspora raise their kids. Talk on being soft and over-pampered.
Now On this particular case, you are dead wrong to speculate as to the cause of the woman demise. Let me give you a scenario to consider, What if this young man was involved in Gang activities and killing his mom is part of his initiation?? What I am interested in is the cause of the quarrel between the teen-age boy and his mother? The article only says that there were "petty family squabbles", that there was a "misunderstanding between the juvenile and his mother for four months", and that "the boy and the mother were at loggerheads".

Without finding out and telling us about the cause of the squabbles, misunderstings and loggerheads, the journalist has failed to give us anything to learn from the tragedy. The journalist could have found out about the cause of the quarrels from the many sources available to him: the Daily Heritage, the Dusseldorf police, the "family member", and the apartment "neighbours". The core of the article, which the readers are eager to know, is missing because the journalist failed to use the many opportunities at his/her disposal.

Further, if there are 4 siblings in total, where is their father? Is there any "man of the house"?

The fact is that as soon as children report to the social welfare that they have been beaten or they are being maltreated in any way, the state will take them and send them to children home - sometimes forever!

I remember once at the age of 11, I had a squabble with my big sister and to scare her I broke a beer bottle daring her to come near me. Honestly if she has approached me I would have thrown away the bottle and taken to my heels.

But taking caution my mother and sisters ignored me until after 2hrs I got bored with my foolishness threw the bottle away and entered the house.

The house had only two entrances. On entering I suddenly noticed my sister turning the lock on the door and my mother appeared from the other door and also turned the lock. From the bedrooms my two elderly sisters also appeared each having 2 canes giving my mother and other sister a cane each.

I was surrounded on all sides with no way of escape. And my mum said " they were going to teach me a lesson so that from hence when I see I beer bottle I would keep far away from it, thoughtless about breaking it to threaten anyone.

For 30 good minutes these 4 women rained canes on my body like I was been murdered. I went into the kitchen they followed me, I run into the storeroom no escape. I tried to breakdown the doors to escape my hands took a real battering.

I finally found an opening under my dads bed and like an Olympic Swimming Gold medalist I dived under it shouting that " I was with Jesus under the bed". My replied that "no they want to beat the devil out of me". I stayed underneath the bed for 3hrs until I heard my dads voice when I finally pulled out me head with cane warts all over my body.

Since that day till today whenever I see a beer bottle empty or full I stay far far away from it. It always brings back the memory of that severe beating I had at the hands of my mum and sisters never to threaten anybody again.

Some time I wonder how Ghanians can be quick to judge, Akosua Gyasiwaah Brempong, is a happily married woman, she studied in Germany, got married there and had a kids there, contrary to the speculations of people here saying what they don't know. How can you assume a woman is no dad-abroad mother because of this incident.
