Rehabilitating the existing system would boost agriculture by providing access to urban markets for remote rural farms. This would bring food prices down and thus lower inflation.

Passenger transport would be boosted, as would the transport of export commodities such as cocoa, timber and mineral produce to our ports. Our nascent oil and gas industry would benefit from the transportation of gas, oil and byproducts to the interior of our country.

Accra is crying for a light railway system. More roads and buses will not solve the traffic problems in our capital, as the car is seen as a status symbol by the Ghanaian middle class. We can begin to address the traffic problems by running a shuttle service on the rehabilitated Accra-Tema railway line.

It is good rehabilitation has started on the Sekondi-Takoradi railway line.

Let us invest in our railways now!

Mahama should say Government will spend money on durable road projects that have the potential to pay back in the long run the money spent to finance those projects. Governments in Ghana waste money to fill potholes and bad roads with laterite and gravels that are later wasted away by rain water because the roads are not tarred to enable the tar to hold together the loose gravel, earth and laterite and help such road projects to last long.

Governments governing parties in Ghana like road project not because of their economic importance BUT because of the 10% kick-backs they bring into party coffers and into their individual private pockets.
