As a grass root health professional,I think that Community Health Nurses (CHN) have a genuine case which needs to solved through advocacy and dialogue and not by threats of strike. Most CHNs work in very remote villages without electricity,mobile phone connection, potable water etc in CHPs compounds. The prez Mahama has recognize the importance of CHPs and has declared his support by authorizing the Accountant General to take a % of his salary n those of his minister to fund CHPs in order to stem the tide of maternal n child mortalities. This is a very positive political platform through which CHNs/Ens should take advantage of n engage stakeholders to drum home their needs. Invite the significant others at your AGMs, arrange "call ons' visits to significant others n make presentations on your contribution to MDGs n your role in the post 20015 agenda (SDGs),present pictures n videos to capture attention. In most of the places where this cadre of staff work, it impossible for them to rewrite n pass the WASSCE n its only fair that avenues be created for them to be able to upgrade themselves after serving for some years. Every good organization which realizes the important role of its HR should be able put plans in place for its critical staff development.

I don't undastand why after completion an Enrolled Nurse can not apply with the cert. to institutions like the universities etc... but rather with the WAEC cert. is exasperating, meaning that cert. awarded by the ministery is of no value at all aside the service. That is my mind.

Honestly speaking, the requirement of enrolled and community nurses to have the so-called WASSCE certificates before being allowed into nursing is outdated and cruel. In our time it ws the GCE "O" level requirement. Fortunately for me I travelled outside Ghana, with my Community Nurse Certificate. It was of course nothing in the western world education curriculum however, it was recognised as a basic qualification to gain entry into a six month foundation course into a bachelor of nursing programme. I now hold a post-graduate diploma in advanced nursing, which I aquired in a six year span. It is high time the education system in Ghana is overhauled to create opportunity for even school drop outs to regain entry into higher education to upgrade their lives.
