Because of the failures in the 2012 Elections, all the existing Commissioners are tainted and should not be appointed to chair the Commission on the retirement of Dr Afari-Gyan. The real problem is, whether whoever is appointed would be seen as independent and impartial by other political parties since the appointment would be made by President Mahama? At the same time, President Mahama as a rational person would not appoint someone who is hostile to his party. That is I have suggested that the appointment of certain positions in Ghana should be done by an Independent Public Appointment Commission as is done here in the UK. The Commission will recommend two or more candidates after interviews to the President to make the final appointment. The Commission should have experts and representatives from the main political parties.

The question of who succeeds Afari-Gyan requires very broad and wide consultations, judging from what the Commissioner and the commission itself has had to endure, in the conduct of elections in the country, with the 2 major parties, the NPP and the NDC, both accusing the Chairman and the commission of various acts of impropriety which effects culminated in the election petition in which the Chairman of the commission admitted, was fraught with unforgivable irregularities.
The various political parties, the Peace Council, our Traditional authorities, the clergy, labour unions, etc, etc, should have a significant input into who is made the Chairman of the commission, and the individual so selected should be above reproach, of the highest integrity and honesty, and not condone mediocrity, to ensure that, our electoral processes are truly free, fair and transparent. Ghana cannot be pushing the boundaries of the peace of the country based on actions or inactions by the Commissioner, since a point would be reached where issues of electoral irregularities would push the country over the brink. This is the time to make sure that, Ghana makes the best of it's democratic process.

Mr.Asare and Staph I think you both have a point so how about a compromise.An equal number of parliamentarians from each party selected to form a committee which will investigate, vote for and supervise the actions of an independent electoral officer.It is quite clear that our politicians are putting party before country so we can't trust them to do us right.If the suggested process work then we can set it help select other Stakeholders in different fields.AND YES IF IT DOESN'T WORK WE CHANGE IT.We can not be so timid and afraid of change that we force ourselves to tolerate and accept the same broken process in hope that we may be lucky one day and have the president's choice actually work.

All Ghanaians should revere Mr Afari GYan for the role he played in the democratic dispensation of this country, called Ghana. The controversial issues raised after the 2012 elections were not new. We only did not do the right thing by going to determine the winner in court. Worst things have happened before since the inception of our new democracy. We are not that old in the game and there require reviews and amendments as we have been doing. All that happened during the 2012 election should not be swept to the feet of Mr Afari Gyan because any time we voted we all hailed him. So both him and the country supretended over these types of challenges for a long-time. He has done his best and must be acknowledged as such. All we needed to do is to do a serious critical analysis of the issues brought about by the court action. So let's work at them with the understanding that, it still cannot be the end of reforms to our elections in Ghana.
