Limann, though a fine gentleman was used as a stooge to loot Ghana to the extent that, Ghana was recording negative economic growth. I quite remember when there was the state run transportation using 'OSA AND TATA' coaches which both did not stand the test of time due to the lootings under Limann's modest watch.

Yes he was a fine gentleman, but he did not know what he was doing. He personally gave Rawlings the green light to do what he did, thinking that Rawlings would kick out the bad ones in P.N.P. and hand over power to him, not knowing Rawlings was being managed and controlled by Kofi Awonoor, Kojo Tsikata, Tsatsu Tsikata, Brig. Kattah and the other Ewes.

Indeed, we are where we are as a result of Dr. Limann's lack of experience. He was a perfect gentleman but a very poor politician. Was Rawlings not arrested on 25th December 1981 night and ordered to be released by Dr. Limann?

Though not all rural areas have electricity, I think JJ should be applauded for taking Ghana out of the doldrums of economic misfit. Ghana had nothing left when JJ came to power. This is what you guys should note.

In the agricultural sector, JJ's achievement is best to none. We celebrate Farmers Day because of JJ.

In the Industrial sector, he recorded growth of about 19%.

Education, he is now in line for an award from University of Education.

He was noted for his contributions to alleviation of world poverty.

In health, Guinea worm infestation was near near zero or was Zero.

There are more achievements toppled with the stable government and democracy Ghanaians can boast of today.

It was JJ's tenure that media houses have sprang up with freedom communication. There a lot more.

Former President Jerry Rawlings is reported to have said he is one of Africa’s cleanest leaders to have been head of state. He is quoted to have said to a group of youth forumers “I will dare you to go and line up some of your finest policemen, some of your finest heads of state, some of your finest judges. Make any allegations against me. You included. Whatever questions you want to ask; take me through a chemical interrogation. I will be the one who will pass. I wonder how many of you will pass,” Mr Rawlings is reported to have boasted of this cleanliness in politics at a time when corruption has become the bane of African politics past and present. It is against this background that I am writing this response.
Let me attempt here to define corruption according to some of the dictionaries of life. In philosophical discussions, corruption is moral impurity or deviation from an ideal. Corruption may include many activities including bribery and embezzlement. Government, or 'political', corruption occurs when an office-holder or other governmental employee acts in an official capacity for personal gain.
The word corrupt when used as an adjective literally means "utterly broken". The word was first used by Aristotle and later by Cicero who added the terms bribe and abandonment of good habits. According to Morris, corruption is described as the illegitimate use of public power to benefit a private interest. Senior, however, defines corruption as an action to (a) secretly provide (b) a good or a service to a third party (c) so that he or she can influence certain actions which (d) benefit the corrupt, a third party, or both (e) in which the corrupt agent has authority.(Source: Wikipedia)
Rawlings we all know came to power on two occasions through bloody overthrow of predecessor administrations, the first being a military junta which was preparing to hand over to a constitutional government and the second a just installed constitutional government which had spent only 27 months of its 48-month life.
On both occasions Rawlings used illegitimate means to overthrow public power for the benefit of his AFRC and PNDC cronies. This is his charge of corruption number one. The private beneficiaries of these coup d'états were himself and his immediate family who from September 1979 till today have lived on Ghana government subventions and unlimited pension.
The extra judicial killings that took place during the era of AFRC, the most bloody period in Ghana's history was supervised by Mr Rawlings who now classifies himself as clean whistle. The backyard of the Air force Station guardroom in Burma Camp became a hunt and shoot grounds for persons who were considered undesirable by Chairman Rawlings. Between the waste space of land from 37 Military Hospital and GBC Club House children begged for their lives but were gunned down by soldiers led by his errand boy WO Agyei Boadi who could not even group shots of 5cm at Teshie Shooting Range. If Rawlings does not see this senseless abuse of powers as corruption, then I wonder what kind of person he calls himself. I will break these senseless murders down in my next treatise.
As office holder Rawlings used his position and influence for a number of personal and family financial gains as well as that of his cronies. Let's examine the facts here.
Over sixty (60) of Ghana’s State-owned companies were placed on divestiture by Former President Rawlings and sold between 1989 and 1992 to either himself or his cronies. He did this under the powers of a bent committee-The Divestiture Implementation Committee (DIC), a body set up by the PNDC junta to oversee this process of their large scale corruption of selling state lands, buildings and foreign properties to themselves. The law which gave legal backing to the DIC was not passed until January 5th, 1993 five years after all the acts of current ion started. So in effect, between 1989 to the passage of PNDC Law 326 Emmanuel Agbodo’s DIC was an illegality which was selling Kwame Nkrumah’s industries. However two clear days before the 1992 constitution became operational; the PNDC passed the Divestiture Law (PNDC Law 326) to cover their behind by retroactively taking effect from January 1st, 1988. As criminal and bent as Rawlings is he abusively used retrospective laws to cover his sorry back, like all corrupt leaders do.
In Section 15 of the same law they inserted another indemnity clause: “No action shall be brought and no court shall entertain any proceedings against the State, the committee or any member or officer of the committee in respect of any act or omission arising out of a disposal of any interest made or under consideration under this law.”
The then PNDC Chairman Rawlings hatched a plan to sell off Ghana's hotels to himself under the pretext that they were not making good profit for the nation. He set up GLAHCO (Ghana-Libyan Arab Holding Company) on Plot 32 & 33, 1st Circular Road, Cantonments, Accra as a partnership between himself and Gadhafi with the blood money from the latter's government. GLAHCO was set up to take over Ghanaian hotels, real estate and lands for farming, all under the corrupt pen of Chairman Rawlings. They then got into action by selling Continental Hotel and Kumasi City Hotel now Golden Tulip Hotels Ltd for a knocked down price of $3,578,125. Rawlings Sogakope home is owned by GLAHCO, so that tells you who owns GLAHCO, now that Gadhafi is dead.
GHACEM was sold to SCANCEM of Norway for $3 million after he and members of his administration took a bribe of $4million. This was revealed in 2007 in a Norwegian court. A Norwegian minister was being interviewed by two Ghanaian editors, Asare Otchere-Darko and Kweku Baako, during their visit to Norway to investigate matters involving evidence before a Norwegian court that top people under the National Democratic Congress government received bribes of more than $4 million from Scancem with the purpose of consolidating the then Norwegian-owned firm’s hold in the local cement industry. He said he had followed the court case of the multi-million dollar bribe scandal as published in Dagens Naeringlsiv Magasinet of 21/22 April 2007 specifically between 1993 and 1998 as stated in a Norwegian court by two of Norway's most respected journalists, Geir Imset and Harald Vanvik.(Ghanaweb, Thursday 9 August 2007). The rest of the story is as long as the rope of Rawlings’ litany of corruption.
Rawlings gave GIHOC’s Abosso Glass Factory to the Togolese Opposition Leader, Gilchrist Olympio, a Rawlings crony. West African Mills and GIHOC Electronics were sold to Kofi Kludjeson, another crony. Prestea and Tarkwa Goldfields were each sold for $3 million. He sold Nsawam canary to Caridem and if you lift the veil of incorporation, you will see his wife Nana Konadu as the owner. She cried witch hunt when the NPP government arraigned her in the court for trial. In 1981, when Chairman Rawlings came to power, Ghana’s Shipping Line, the Black Star Line, had 14 vessels. These were ships that belonged to the Republic of Ghana. By the time Rawlings left power he had shut down the Black Star Line which Nkrumah had built, sold all of the 14 vessels, kept the purse and rendered our fellow citizens who worked as seamen jobless!
My litany of Rawlings corruption has just started. It gets juicier. I shall be back.

We must not discount the contributions of Dr Joseph Boakye Danquah, the other members of the big six and others. Danquah's work "Akan laws and customs and the constitution of Akim (Akyem) Abuakwa" convinced the African elite, the British and the world at large that the people of Ghana (Gold Coast) were ready for self government.

As one of the few African members of the legislative assembly he vehemently opposed the British decision to setup only one university for British West Africa in Nigeria. His action led to the decision to setup the University of Ghana - Legon.

All this was before Nkrumah and his successors came to the scene. But we must also not forget the immense contribution Nkrumah made.

Dr Hilla Limann was born and named Babini but he was brought up by his uncle, Heli Limann. He assumed his name on entering primary school.

•1975 (June): Returned to Ghana as Head, Europe, the Americans Southeast Asia Desk. When the ban on politics was lifted in 1979, the Nkrumaists grouped under the Peoples National Party (PNP). The most popular figure and the one most had tipped to lead them to elections was Alhaji Imoro Egala. Egala was however disqualified by SMC Two from running for political office. Egala nominated Limann to lead the Party.
Although seen by many as a novice in politics, Limann, perhaps, shocked many by beating the more "popular" Victor Owusu of the Popular Front Party (PFP) in the run-off the 1979 elections. Limann polled 62 per cent of the votes as against 38 per cent by Owusu. In the Parliamentary election the PNP won 71 seats against 42 by the PFP, 13 by the United National Convention, 10 by the Action Congress Party, three by the Social Democratic Front and one by an Independent candidate.
•1979 (September 24): Sworn-in as President of Ghana's Third Republic. One of Limann's first acts was to replenish food stock, which had been depleted by the AFRC's three-month rule.
His government also launched the Gold Endowment Fund as a means of getting investors to Ghana.
•1981 (31 December): Overthrown by Flight-Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, leader of the AFRC who had handed over power to him about tow and-a-half years ago. Limann lived a private life and although he tried to re-enter politics in 1992 he failed in his bid to win the presidential elections of that year as the candidate of the People's National Convention. His last effort in politics was to try and unite the fractured Nkrumaists front and was co-chairman of the Unity Talks aimed at bringing all Nkrumaists under one-fold
•1998 (23 January): Died of natural causes. May his soul be blessed by His creator the Almighty God.

The Rawlings coup against Limann was a treasonous crime and an opportunistic move by Rawlings and his collaborators at self-enrichment at great cost to Ghana. It is also true that Limann was mistreated as a former President by the fascist Rawlings. However, Limann was no hero of any kind but an inept, alcoholic and traitor to the Nkrumahist cause, a complete anti-Nkrumahist mole, who exploited the nepotistic patronage of Imoru Egala and corrupt, self-seeking former CPP bigwigs like Kojo Botsio, to co-opt and sabotage any return to power by Nkrumahist forces.

Limann had worked as an intelligence officer under diplomatic cover for the NLC in the post-Nkrumah years. His task while posted to Togo was to spy on CPP activists who were reorganizing to return Nkrumah to power, leading to the capture of many. (Assensoh, A. B., Kwame Nkrumah: six years in exile, 1966-1972).

As President, Limann had intended to sell off the state-owned enterprises created by Nkrumah. Ironically this move was accomplished by Rawlings, leading to the collapse of Ghana's industrial base and the enrichment of the Rawlingses, their "Consultants" and other collaborators!

In 1980, Ghanaian newspapers widely exposed the Limann administration as having been bribed by the US in order for Ghana to boycott the first Olympic Games in Moscow. The Limann administration could have reversed the illegal seizure of CPP assets but did not. Neither did Limann reverse the naming of Accra International Airport after Kotoka by the NLC! The revisionist attempt to present Limann in a different light will not succeed.

His modesty and selflessness was beyond par; bur even more important was his believe in the rule of law and democracy. He would never resort to violence or short cuts to protect himself, His vision was hing on the long term interest of the nation and that was not necessarily in harmony with some c.p.p activists seeking revenge and retribution. Everything that has happened in Ghana since Limann has been negative and we shall continue to suffer by giving in to the falsehood, hypocrisy and greed we continue to promote after Limann. He was a hero and that makes Rawlings a zero. Mr Gilbert Gyimah has got it right.

I supported Johnny Hanson's party which merged with the PNP. I was then in Legon. When some comrades went to their meeting after the merger, one of them took a look at these students and sneeringly said, this time they were not forming a party for verandah boys! What an insult? The PNP was composed of the right-wing elements associated with the CPP who brought the CPP into disrepute through their corrupt ways. I know for a fact that they won the elections bcos they opportunistically identified themselves with the June 4th Uprising and JJ.

From very reliable sources, vouched for by a friendly foreign intelligence source, Limann warmed his way into the heart of the NLC by divulging the fact that he was spying for the British M5 against Nkrumah while at the Ghana Desk in Paris. Of course, he was part of the Dombo party in the North and even stood for elections in the early 1950s on their ticket. At least he was honest not to lie an claim his ideology was Nkrumahism but "Ghana".

Btw, getting a PhD doesn't make one a scholar? How many articles, not to mention books, did he author?

Did President Rawlings make an error of judgement in overthrowing Dr Limann? May be or may be not! It all depends on which of the fence you were. If you were affluent at the time surely you wouldn't have experienced the hardships at the time and therefore would have thought the Coup was a mistake. However, if you were poor and was struggling at the time you would think otherwise.

The fact of the matter is we are where we are now. And the question is what are we going to do to ensure history doesn't repeat itself. That we do not experience the same level of corruption and disorganisation that would lead to the rise of military interventions that we saw in the seventies and eighties.

My view is we mustn't forget the past but we must strive to work with our present government and politicians by holding them to account. Making them accountable to society. We must re-work our constitution so that poorly performing MPs can be sacked from office in between elections.

Our constitution should allow for incumbent presidents to be impeached if they don't deliver and are rumoured to be involved in corrupt activities.

Until we can make our leaders accountable to us Ghana is not going grow or improve for the poor Ghanaian.
