I am happy the Dep Finance Minister has thrown enough light on the present hullabaloo. What I suggest to government is for it to take on Barclays for this very irresponsible text messages it sent to its clients. I received one of it and it created a huge consternation in me. Thankfully the Minister has explained issues to the minutest details on Joy FM and other radio networks. But as is won't of these agents of doom, they will refuse to understand and continue to cause confusion in the minds of the populace. What other explanations does Kwesi Pratt want the Minister to give. Indeed knowing very well the need to do some public education and to make the players in the new law work harmoniously, the players had been engaged by government and the implementation date has not been definitely fixed. As to how Barclays went ahead and gave indication of the implementation time, they will be the only chaps to know. As for this Prince Kwesi Addae who thinks that a certain Nana Akufo Addo has the panacea to Ghana's myriad economic problems, let him continue to remain in his foolhardy ignorance. The truth of the matter is that there is no one who can help any Ghanaian except that Ghanaian himself or herself. Politicians always jump on other persons' misfortunes or difficulties to propel themselves I to power for their own selfish gains. If Nana is really what he is being projected to be or to possess, where was he when the NPP was in power. If he really cared for the average Ghanaian, he would have seen to the implementation of some of his so called lofty ideas. Please let us not make ourselves willing and ready preys to these glorified thieves who masquerade as politicians

I believe what the government is trying to do is tax interest income on deposits which is done in the US. Sort of a capital gains tax. What they need to explain to the people is that they don't lose any part of the principal (actual deposits). Only the interest is taxed but nevertheless a loss in total savings. They need to put in a good system to do this though but as desperate as the government is now, I won't be surprised if they have plans to do that. In the US the banks report interest income I believe above $10 to the IRS and also send the customer a form with the amount reported to the IRS. The customer then uses that notification as part of income reported to the IRS during the annual tax filing. Barclays won’t jeopardize its business by sending that text if they did not receive some directive from the government. The bank stands to lose when they lose customers.

First, take my word that I am neither NPP, PPP or what ever political party out there. I am a concerned Ghanaian. As far as I am concern PPP, NDC, NPP etc; are all corupt, selfish and greedy.
But when Kuffuor led this country, the world most economical institutions, namely, IMF and the Wordl Bank nicknamed Ghana as the "gateway of Africa". Do you think it was because these world institutions were NPP supporters? Fool, think again Efo. It was because of competent economical implementations. Did you remember how many new banking institution opened their offices in Ghana during Kuffuo's tenure? When Financial institutions trot to open establishments in a country means the Financial Institutions seen economical prosperity.
Since NDC took over leadership all the promising economical prospects had varnished. The Cedi has plummered down south against foreign currencies. Cedi against the US dollar has fallen over 60%.
And you continue to defend such a terrible government? What's in your brain, pebbles?

If the gov't wants to widen the tax base it should seriously consider these churches who rope in billions of cedis annually yet pay nothing to the gov't. When JJ formed NDC, those who trooped to him are nothing more than lazy and do-nothing Ghanaian who are prepared to suck the nation's blood without toil. Why is NDC taxing Ghanaians? They are taxing just to get enough money for the next presidential election.

We all know that taxation is the primary source of government revenue but this government is taxing for "no reason". Too much tax will rather put a halt on economic growth but the truants do not see that.

Imagine Kufuor imposing such foolish tax on Ghanaians, what will be the response of NDC then in opposition? They will tell Ghanaians that Kufuor has no feeling for Ghanaians so, what about them?

This is done every where in the world except Ghana where a call is being made to the government and Bank of Ghana to explain to the public. Implementation procedures of administrative laws are done through Regulations passed by subsidiary legislation of parliament not by ministers. Scrap this dysfunctional law!

In Ghana we allowed the fallacies of the Danquah-Busia ideologues who sold us on the idea of a society with hand out for free things from government without a price to become an expectation and we have paid dearly for that folly. It is in that silliness that enabled our political and intellectually stupid educated class to create a myriad of tax exempt status for almost anyone who can wear a white shirt and tie not to pay their fair share of taxes even as they collect a paycheck for no work from a broke government. Have you been to a developed nation before? Do their presidents increase their salaries ten folds and backdate them two years? People in Europe and I know Deutschland, German, Norway and UK (from personal experience) pay high taxes but they not complain too much. Because they know their country will assist them whenever they need assistance from the state. They do not have huge civil service and large numbers of MPs. Have you thought of the need to reduce the civil service population and the MPS? Nothing is free? Why don't we withdraw the northern educational subside so that the gov't can save? If you really were Abeeku, you would have known that the boy at Kotokraba and Ap3w)sika in Cape Coast needs state assistance. Why shouldn,t MPs and all politicians pay their own fuel and rent just as the rest of us do, so that the nation saves? Mahama and his Terkpe gang must be dragged to the SC if they do not go through parliament before effecting this meaningless tax on banking. From the deputy minister's explanation one can easily infer they themselves do not know whick banking services are to be taxed. Savings? No. Salaries? No. Deposits? No. Loans? No. Payment with cheques? No. Perhaps on Pensions? Maybe no. Transfers? Maybe. But the banks charge fees already on transfers? So on what is the 17.5 VAT being charged? On the Transfer Fee or on the money the customers transfer? They don't even know. Confused lot led by a clueless leader drowned in corruption!
